Within an hour, Jakotsu and the sheriff, along with some deputies, were making their way back to the homestead; pulling a cart behind them. A quick glance around after dismounting assured Jakotsu that things were as he left them and Bankotsu was still hiding somewhere safe and sound. "Care to fill me in on what happened?" the sheriff inquired as he too dismounted and looked around at the carnage at his feet.
"The leader is a man that was at the orphanage with me. When I was there, there was an incident that resulted in the death of one of his friends. Apparently he decided to get revenge on me after hearing I was back in town. Far as I can tell, one of his friends saw me when I was in town talking to you yesterday. Sheriff, should I be worried about repercussions from this?" Jakotsu inquired as he began helping the deputies load the bodies into the back of the cart; ignoring the grazing pack animal that had pulled it from town.
"Nah, I wouldn't be worrying about that or nothing. They were trespassing on your land and you had every right to shoot them; whether they shot first or not. Plus they weren't exactly well liked in town. Been causing trouble around these parts for a while now," the sheriff assured him as they placed the last body on the cart and they latched the tailgate back in place.
"We'll bring them into town and deal with the burial. If you have any further problems, don't hesitate to come get me again," the sheriff informed him before tipping his hat and remounting his horse. Nodding goodbye, Jakotsu stood there and watched in silence as the group disappeared on the horizon. Certain they wouldn't be coming back, he turned and headed inside.
"They are gone now, Bankotsu. Coast is clear," Jakotsu assured him as he closed the door and sat down at the kitchen table after righting one of the chairs. As he waited, Bankotsu emerged from behind the dresser and took the seat across from him.
"What do you plan to do now?" Bankotsu questioned as he crossed his arms and placed them on the table in front of him. For a few moments, Jakotsu sat there in silence just staring off into space before finally turning his attention to his companion.
"Well there's not much that I can do right now. It's not like I can settle down here while the ghosts of days passed still haunt me.”
