Annabelle was dancing hand in hand with some children in the village's yard, their voices tuned a folk song in unison, which the foreigner lass already knew the lyrics by heart:
Pure has become impure,
impure has now become pure
Good now has become bad,
bad has become good...
And then, all of sudden, she stopped. A brief chill ran down her spine.
"Miss Shinrinko, are you quite alright?" Yoru's little fingers squeezed hers.
"Ah, yes... It's nothing." Anna breathed in and released the child's hand. After recovering the air, she smiled as nothing odd has ever happened. "Wait for me in here, I'll be back soon." With the last word, her feet began to step away fastly, giving no chance to Yoru utter her a response.
"What is going on with her?" Motoko, the girl who took Annabelle to the village along with the youngest one, whispered the question.
"I don't know..." the little black-haired child, Annabelle's faithful companion said. However, deep inside she had an idea of the reason behind her friend's unexpected escape. For being able to feel pure and evil auras, Yoru has noted a certain strange, chaotic energy getting close.

Anna walked into the woods, ceasing steps only when she came across the woman who was almost her own reflection, except by the brighter, golden curls not as long as her flaming waves. Ailyn was elegantly standing next to a calm stream, her hands entwined over her belly. The black velvet cloak falling over her back made the redness of her dress look even more fancy, her hair popping over the lowered hood shone preciously in the sun and she smiled. The softness on the curve of her lips showed a different, but natural gesture.
"So this is the place where you are living now." The blond twin looked around. "This fog makes me feel nauseated. How can you bear it?"
"The mist is a purifying barrier, people with evil thoughts and feelings are repelled by the sacred Mount's forcefield." She explained, keeping some distance, studying the other woman in bewilderment while restraining the will to smile tenderly.
"Lucky you, if it was not for the fog, the yokai horde I found in the way would be here, seeking for your flesh and for your jewel shard." She chuckled and crossed arms, watching Annabelle clear her throat, visibly worried. "Such a picturesque look you chose to wear..." The mocking commentary was about Anna's clothes and makeup. Ailyn looked at her from head to toe, grimacing at every unusual detail, till her turquoise pools got stuck on the red-haired's bare neck. "Where is your pendant? I could sense your aura from afar, and now being so close it nearly rings bells into my ears. Those creatures in the forest must feel the same, you know?". She said as sitting upon a large rock.
"I..." Anna sighed before finishing the sentence, "borrowed it". The melancholy gaze falling over her own boots made everything clear instantly.
Ailyn's laughter echoed between the trees around. "To him?!" She inquired while laughing loudly.
Annabelle answered with another brief sigh, she didn't wish to speak about the matter, neither she wanted to tell how the borrowing has happened.
"Why?" Yet, her sister was insistent, and was staring at her with genuine curiosity.
"Does it matter? Since then, I have never seen him again." One hand of hers touched a tree and softly caressed the wooden trunk. "Maybe it's better this way, I'm happy here anyway."
"Liar." The Red Rose spat the accusation, bewildering the ginger twin. "How was that night with your deceased love?" Since she wouldn't be able to make Annabelle reveal the reason behind giving her crystal moon away, Ailyn changed the subject and mentioned the spiritual meeting with Kagewaki Hitomi.
"Very different from what I expected." Why the hell Ailyn was forcing her to remember so painful events? "All of this is in the past though. Now I'm fine, feeling at peace." Her nails rubbed against a piece of moss, distracting her mind the little it could.
"I doubt it!" Giggling, Lynnie narrowed her eyes in mockery.
"What are you doing here, Ailyn?" Finally, Anna asked, with eyes locked on her equal's visage. "Since when have you left your hidden spot? It's too risky! If Naraku may find you..."
"He already has, that is the very reason I am wandering around right now." She shrugged.
"What? What do you mean?" Annabelle felt frightful and came closer to her familiar at last.
"Let us spare the details, since I do not even know if I am allowed to share them with you." Ailyn kept talking and acting as if the whole mess she has been living was nothing at all. "We can say that, for free and spontaneous pressure, I resumed to cooperate with the said person."
"He blackmailed you..." Anna massaged her own forehead. "Why do I still get surprised?"
"Easy, you know that does not matter how bad a situation is, I can always find something to take advantage of." Her fingers slid on the golden hair, arranging some locks to the side.
"Are you sure you're fine?" Sky-blue orbs fell over the blondie, twinkling fear.
"Holy hell, I am!" Although Ailyn was laughing, her voice sounded impatient. "Stop acting like a crazy mother, what a pain in the ass!" She barely realized her choice of words until they just poured from her mouth, and then such informal expression came, reminding her of a certain shorty mercenary.
"Pain... in the ass?" Annabelle narrowed eyes and grimaced. She knew her twin far too well to understand that language didn't belong to the Red Rose.
The other Scottish lass tapped her mouth, muffling a chuckle. Anna could not help but laugh in bewilderment.
"Oh, living together..." Ailyn sighed, "it really does mysterious things."
"Living together with who?" More direct than her sister, she sat at the other side of the large rock, resting hands over her own knees.
"No one special" The light-blue pools almost sealed, looking serene as they hardly used to be, and the smile in her scarlet lips was almost harmless, without the usual dark trace of malice.
"Ailyn..." Annabelle blinked the eyes sometimes, reading the other's features. "Don't tell me that you..."
"Do not even start it!" She raised up and arranged the long skirt "I am only having some fun, I have to take something good from the situation I am facing. Dealing with a bunch of rude, violent, imbecile grown men is not easy at all!" With hands on the waist, the Red Rose lifted her nose.
"Who are those?" Anna stood up as well, feeling more confused than ever.
"I already spoke too much!" The blond twin turned to the other side, hiding the discrete blush on her cheeks.
"Ailyn, did Naraku send you here?" Steps slowly enclosed the Red Rose, fingertips lingered a few inches of her black cloak. Anna didn't know what to think of all that fuss, but if her sister was there while resuming to work for the hanyo, maybe she could have a message from him or something alike.
"No." The brief response cut her expectations' off.
"Then why are you here?" The White Rose found courage and landed the palm of her hand over the stiffened shoulder covered by the dark velvet shroud.
Amelie's disciple spun around. However, her answer was the silence itself. Ailyn stared at the features of her benevolent, red-haired living mirror and the air felt constricted into her throat. Jakotsu's words echoed inside her ears and she was almost surrendering to them. Still so, her heart was very proud and forgiveness has always been like hard labour to the lass, she didn't even believe in it's existence to begin with. Stern, Ailyn insisted on looking at Annabelle directly, analyzing every little detail on her pale complexion that could show any trace of falseness, but the lass with flaming hair looked as clear as water, the fact she didn't feel the weight of that purifying mist over her body wasn't a surprise in the end.
She would never be like Annabelle, Naraku was right. Nevertheless, the idea of not being comparable to her sister didn't torment her like before. Ailyn wasn't able to describe her present feelings, there was a longing to trade confidences, to even ask for advices. There was also fear, for as locking eyes with her equal, marks of a tragical love became evident in every single gesture of her sibling. That wasn't what the Red Rose wished for herself, ever!
"I do not want to be like you." The thought fled from her lips.
"And you don't have to." Annabelle smiled softly. "You must be yourself."
"You still suffer a great deal, do you not? You may try to conceal it in many ways, and even so I will always be able to see it through your soul." She touched the hand that was smoothing her shoulder.
"No one can avoid the suffering forever. Not only our conquers made us who we are, but also our defeats. Indeed, I believe that our defeats are what really give us strength, because if we are capable to overcome them, we can survive anything." Anna said in such a peaceful tone that her voice almost sounded monotone.
"Did you overcome your defeats?" For "defeat" Ailyn was taking Naraku as a synonym. Her eyes got stuck on her only family with profound seriousness.
"Each day has been a different kind of overcoming." She stroked her bosom "Even with this burden."
"Give it to me then." The other tried to persuade her, lifting one open hand. "If you do not want the Shikon shard, I do."
"You never change, Ailyn..." Annabelle chuckled, shaking her head.
All of sudden, a silhouette got close, crossing the fog.
"Oh, and now what?!" The woman with golden curled hair rolled eyes while complaining.
"Kohaku?" Annabelle's turquoises widened, facing the unexpected presence.
"Master Naraku has sent me to fetch you. You must wait to meet Bankotsu." The boy said, kneeling in front of the Red Rose. He clearly was avoiding to look into Annabelle's direction and she noted it, as she also realized how his features were more vivid in the present. His brownish eyes gleamed translucency, without any trace of the morbid opacity of someone who used to serve as a mere puppet in a villain's hands.
Maybe he is conscientious! Belle kept that hope to herself, a discreet smile adorned her face.
"Sending a child to escort me?!" Ailyn ragged. "Just what I needed..." then she chuckled bitterly.
"So his name is Bankotsu." Annabelle teased.
"What of it?!" Annoyance was clearly present in her voice.
"The one who taught you to call others a pain in the ass." It was irresistible to mock her a little more.
"The one who is always calling me a pain in the ass!" Ailyn mumbled, crossing arms under her chest. "Come on little brat, take me to where I have to go!" She went to Sango's brother and slapped his shoulder, making his body lose a bit of balance as they walked alongside.
"Ailyn!" Anna called from the distance and received a sideways gaze from the other. "It was good to see you," she told.
"It was good to see you too," and Ailyn smiled a bit, showing a sort of tranquility. That said, Kohaku and the witch disappeared together into the mist. Annabelle walked ahead, attempting to catch their step to say something more, but the duo was already lost of sight and any word the ginger lass could say stood only inside her own imagination.

There was an insistent thought pounding into Ailyn's head. Why did her sister gave away the pendant that protected her, and worse, to leave it into the hands of a monster like Naraku? And when has it happened? For she didn't feel the crystal presence when meeting the bastard a while ago. But, oh, he must be facing tough times to be in need of such artefact, and his despair might be grand enough for him to seek the Band of Seven's allegiance. And what was her role on such mess? A part of Ailyn felt like Naraku was having fun at her cost, and putting her to the mercy of those zombies was a way of showing himself powerful and dominant, yet the truth must be all this grandiosity was nothing but a façade. Naraku should be miserable.
The howling winds and the heavy weight of the pure energy surrounding the lass made she lose concentration. During the long walk, the landscape got even more blurred into the whitish mist, so it was almost impossible to see the trail ahead, nor anything around. While thinking of ways to harm the hanyo, or of how she could find him, Ailyn suddenly began to feel so dizzy that her body waved, losing balance.
"It's the barrier" Kohaku explained, however he didn't seem to be affected by the sacred energy.
"And why do you look so well?" She leaned on the stony walls, her trembling legs stumbled aside. Finally, when one foot of hers stepped on nothing, Ailyn realized they were climbing a steep ramp of earth, and on their side there was nothing but a deep precipice. Terrified, she threw her body behind and fell, laying on the dark sand, panting as pondering of how she almost plummeted cliff below.
"Miss, please calm down and take a deep breath. You need to walk, I can't carry your weight..." Kohaku said timidly.
"Are you saying I'm fat?" Ailyn nagged and stood up with some difficulty, touching the rocky wall where she leaned before, holding tight at the rocks and the clay.
"No, I didn't mean that!" He blushed and resumed walking in front of her. "The way is long, so I need you to walk."
"And now what?" The Red Rose breathed in, the air felt rarefied. "Then at least give me your arm. Come on, be useful!"
A bit clumsy, Sango's little brother did as she demanded, and together they went on climbing that path, not knowing if it was day or if it was night already, nor how many time they would spend to get wherever they must.

At last, after long hours, at least as Ailyn could count, they arrived in a place that seemed to be a temple on the mountain. As soon as she reached the wooden floor, Ailyn got rid of her boots and sat down, massaging her feet filled of bubbles, ignoring what was right behind her back. She snapped her tired toes and stretched her legs, then looked around and finally realized that, behind her, there was a mummified man sitting on an altar.
"Disgusting!" As fast as a beam, Ailyn lifted from the floor and cleaned her clothes with her hands. "What a poor taste leaving such thing in there!"
"Careful with your words" a soft, girlish voice reverberated. The absence of emotion made the tone sound phantasmagorical. Even being used to supernatural events, Ailyn felt goosebumps running through her body while watching the white silhouette cross the fog. Then, when it's shapes became clear and the blue eyes recognized the little one, all fear vanished away. "This man was a very respected monk, and died as a saint." Kanna told. "The barrier protecting the mount is his doing."
"Will my sister be sanctified and mummified when she dies?" The lass touched an index finger on her chin, her eyes blinked a plenty of times and she bursted into laughter. To imagine Annabelle in such context have been amusing, she had to admit.
Then, Ailyn's eyes began to feel heavy and her sight clouded, a deep sudden slumber consumed her whole being and her body fell asleep over the wooden floor.
"What happened to her?" Kohaku asked.
"The barrier is too powerful, it made her lose strength " Kanna said.
"Besides," the figure of a dried monk spoke, startling the boy. "Naraku gave me orders to wake her only when the leader of the Shichinintai arrives."
"The monk is alive?!" Kohaku quickly moved away from the embalmed corpse.
Kanna ignored the question and just walked away as calm as she came.
To be continued...
