"Go after him" a voice made Ailyn jump of scare. "There's still time" Annabelle emerged from the protective fog.
"Eavesdropping on other people's conversations, shame on you!" the blonde twin said while leaning against the tree. "Ugh, I feel so dizzy!" She placed a hand over her forehead and bent down towards the ground.
"You shouldn't have used your powers in here; its source is tormented souls, it's impure. That's why you're feeling unwell." Anna held her shoulders, keeping her upright.
"Oh, is that so?" she said, but accepted the help to remain on her feet.
"I'll take you from this place". The White Rose put the Red's arm around her neck, aiding the sister to walk by her side, going in the opposite direction Bankotsu had gone. "You shouldn't go to the village where I'm staying," she explained. "Or you might feel worse, but I can't go beyond the limits of this barrier either," she continued. "Many Yokai would prey upon me, since I don't have my pendant."
"Because you are a fool." Ailyn complemented her speech. "Do you not understand that with this sort of attitude, whether by borrowing that crystal moon to Naraku, or healing Bankotsu's arm, you are only contributing to more catastrophes happening?"
"I healed his arm for you," Anna said, avoiding mentioning her despair at seeing Naraku in pain.
"And did it not cross your mind the reason behind his arm being in such a state? It is obvious that he was in a clash against your dear little friends, Annabelle. He was fighting with that group of imbeciles who wants to defeat Naraku!" She coughed at the end, her throat choking because of that dense, pure atmosphere.
"I know as well as you do, and yet I can see how you suffer for that man's condition, because you like him." Anna said, decreasing the rhythm of her steps to prevent Ailyn from stumbling.
"I like him?!" The other woman laughed. "Bankotsu is a living-dead! And being Naraku's ally, I doubt he will last much longer."
"And you like him even so." She didn't falter before the affirmation.
"Oh, spare me, Annabelle! I may feel attracted to him, I am not dead after all. But liking him?!" Ailyn chuckled. "He is just a mercenary, with no titles or principles, he lives to cause the chaos! Everything he values is power, his only desire is to become even stronger, because he knows that as a human he will always be vulnerable in this world. Ridiculous! I even pity him!" Between those sharpen words, high laughter sounded, it wasn't clear if she was simply mocking Bankotsu or doing the same with her very self.
"And since when does liking someone depend on titles and power? We don't choose who we fall in love with." Anna spoke without much emotion, as if this idea was the most common thing in the world, but the blonde lass continued to laugh loudly, almost getting breathless. "He likes you, Ailyn," she finished, looking stern.
"Does he?" Blue watery eyes blinked, the woman was still panting after laughing so hard. She felt dizzier than before, sweat dripped from the corner of her forehead. "Nonsense!" A weak chuckle poured from her throat.
"He must really like you to give up on your jewel shard," Belle said, throwing it into the air. "For if he is an ambitious mercenary with no principles as you say, and the partnership between you two has come to an end, what would stop him from attacking you and then robbing the shard? To me, he has feelings for you."
"That is not the point!" Ailyn nagged, lacking patience to sustain that argument any longer.
"Oh, but this is exactly the point, my sister!" The ginger lass subtly stopped, making her twin wave ahead. The Red Rose didn't fall only because her arm was firmly around Anna's neck. "Don't you see? Later on, if you don't make your feelings clear either to him or to yourself, regret will consume your whole being." She turned to face her equal.
"What is the use of it, if I know it will not last?" Although a little smile was curving the red lips, the eyes once so debaucherous now looked sad and resigned. Her voice changed from high to very low, into a melancholy softness. "That arm was the very representation of what he is. His flush, his youth, his warmness... All of this are only an illusion and nothing more."
"And what is our youth if not the same? In a couple of years we'll be nothing but an amount of bones buried in the sand, Lynnie. The biggest certainty in life is the death itself, and it comes for us all, sooner or later." Her fingers slid tenderly over her sister's cheek, making the yellow-haired lass speechless right away. Any collection of words already prepared dissolved like dust into her mind, the phrase uttered ahead was simply an unburdening coming from her core:
"I am afraid..."
"Afraid of what?" Smiling sweetly, Anna asked.
"Of suffering. To love is to lose. First I witnessed what our father went through, then Amelie, then you... I do not want this fate for myself, love is a curse which I am not intending to carry." Her gaze was fixated on their feet.
"Speaking like this, you sound like..." Naraku – she thought, yet didn't dare to say the name. "Well, Amelie I doubt have truly loved somebody." Before the other could find a gap to defend the stepmother, Annabelle went on speaking eloquently: "as for me and for our father, I am sure that both of us didn't regret our experiences. My only repentance is not have lived my love with Kagewaki to the last consequences, Lynnie." Her fingers carefully smoothed Ailyn's fringe and moved away some golden curls from her apathetic face. "What made me miserably sad was that love wasn't consummate, that's the reason why I tell you to take the opportunity and fulfill yours." Belle got Ailyn's arms and stroked them, her gaze never running from her sibling's complexion. "If anything bad comes to happen, you will always have this memory to warm your heart. To live is to suffer, we must endure it so we can change, so we can grow. Love, however, is a relief in the middle of all of this, it's the break life gives us so we can breathe and contemplate it's bright side in fullness. If at the end of your life you haven't known what love feels like, then what your time in the world was worth of?"
Ailyn's lips remained sealed as her eyes kept lowered down. Talking about the brevity of life made her anxiousness grow, mostly because the lass knew what would be her fate in the moment of her last breath. Her soul was promised to the Underworld and she, more than anybody, was aware of how life should be enjoyed while it lasted, for what would come next was only pain and despair, not for a few years, but for the whole eternity. Ailyn has sworn to herself not whining over it, for she knew the price when the commitment was done. There was no looking back, not a single tear descended from her eyes for that or any other reason, although her voice sounded as a shaking whisper:
"It is late, I do not know where he went".
Annabelle, still smiling, took from her neckline some black strands of hair tied by a thin white ribbon and delivered them to the other lass' hand. "It won't be hard to find out..." She blinked an eye.
"You..." her turquoises widened, as her chin almost fell down. "Naughty!"
"I knew you would be proud, send him away, and regret it later. We are sisters after all" Anna laughed.
"It looks like the white little witch has learned a bit of occultism..." Ailyn joked.
"Have you already forgot that I read some pages of that book?" She recalled with no resentments, talking in the same playful way as the other. They laughed together.
"Thank you" Wiping her eyes after laughing so hard, she hid the strands of Bankotsu's bangs into her cleavage. "Belle".
Both smiles faded while they stared at each other. The ginger took the initiative to delicately hold the blondie. Closing eyes, her arms softly evolved Ailyn's body. There was no nagging, nor an urge to move away coming from the Red Rose this time. She just sealed her eyelids as Anna did, and rested hands over her twin's back, under the coppery waved hair.
"Take care." Annabelle mumbled.
"You too." Ailyn responded, touching her chin on the other's shoulder.
At last the women parted. Strangely feeling more willing, the Red Rose achieved to walk by herself, not needing any aid anymore. So, the two lasses proceeded the journey to the Mount Hakurei barrier's limit.
"From here you can follow to wherever he is." Anna said as her sister was passing through the almost invisible protective dome. "And may everything goes well!" She sincerely wished.
"I wish the same to you". Of all the vows she has taken, this sounded like the most truthful one. The red-haired dressed in white smiled on the other side of the fog. Soon, a green circled portal appeared by Ailyn's back, she closed her eyes and uttered some ancient Gaelic words. The few black strands kept next to her chest shone, then she jumped inside the magical gate that would take her to the place she wanted to go.

Well, well... who could tell the two of them would reconcile? A pair of precious rubies were focused on a crescent moon-shaped crystal. Into the vast darkness, only those malicious eyes showed themselves, contrasting with the transparent gemstone which worked like a mirror reflecting every event related to Annabelle. It happened in the past as well, he remembered. When she tried to kill me and failed, her sister came to take her to fulfill a ritual, and this stone remained with me. A dark brown tentacle brought the crystal towards Naraku's floating head. And I could see all she was going through... as I do in this very moment. The crimson pools slowly blinked. It's a shame, Annabelle, yet your sister is right. Bankotsu shall not last much longer. The shards which he and his comrades are carrying must return to their source. Behind the transparent jewel, another one glinted and it's gleam spread like little spots of light around the cave made of flesh – his flesh. Even Ailyn, a woman blinded by envy, absurdly egocentric, had her heart taken by this feeling called love. An acid chuckle echoed. When I finally have my new body, I will be unaffected by this, then I shall rejoice myself on the misery of them all. Everything will be different. Everything... The tentacle holding the pendant untangled it's milky cord, letting the necklace fall upon an amount of strange texturing pieces uniting in one bigger thing.

The orange sun already began to descend the pinkish sky. A part of the coppery sphere was hiding behind that huge monument made of stones, earth, leaves and flowers. The ginger western lass and her little companion were watching the beautiful phenomenons of nature while sitting upon a large treetop.
"Shinrinko, why have you been absent for so long?" Yoru's voice took Annabelle's attention from the sacred mount ahead.
"Oh, I'm sorry, but there were some things I needed to do... did you see that light at the top of Mount Hakurei?" She suddenly pointed.
"No, I didn't see anything..." The little girl shook her head.
"I must have imagined then." Anna scratched her chin, in a pensive mood. I hope it was just my imagination! She corrected herself in thoughts, stroking her chest with one hand, the tiny shard inside discretely grew warm and a sudden feeling of anxiety made her feel sick. However, Annabelle didn't share any of that with the child by her side. She kept her features serene, and sought to concentrate her mind on the wonders a calm landscape could offer, even if an inner voice tried to warn her at all cost that such calmness had it's days numbered.

Bankotsu was walking through the trails of the forest without any rush. Although he was aware his mission was to climb mount above and face Naraku's foes, the lad followed another direction and was moving away. Venomous demon wasps were flying right upon his head though, buzzing insistently into his ears.
"I know, I know!" He scolded, waving one arm to make those irritating bugs take some distance. "I just need a moment and then I'll go there!"
Shit! The mercenary cursed into his thoughts while stopping to look around. Luckily he was far from the purifying barrier and that was why he felt a bit better, well, physically at least. For within his depths, Bankotsu saw himself out of his mind.
Remembering the last minutes shared with a woman of exotic features, he mixed such memory with another from some time ago. Two times he has cornered her against a tree and longed to devour every inch of her skin. In the first, he was assured that she would try to steal his Shikon shards and for that reason he wanted to scare the woman. In the second, however, the lass didn't even try to rob him, and there was opportunity. The mercenary have been preparing himself for that attempt to come, he knew she would be treacherous and do anything to outsmart him, and still, all Ailyn did was to move away and evade from his gaze. If he blinked, she would just run.
Why? Bankotsu wondered, almost going mad, forgetting that the woman possessed a shard of the gem as well and he didn't think of taking it from her. It would be an easy task, for they were surrounded by that forcefield and her powers were limited. If they would measure strength by physical force, of course Bankotsu would be the winner.
I just lost my chance. He regretted, convincing himself that such feeling of loss was because of the shard he didn't get, and so his memories of the foreigner lass pulsed into his head unbearably vivid, from her every strand of golden hair, the shade of blue of her eyes, the curves of her slender body, and the taste of her scarlet lips mixed with bitter whiskey. Bankotsu frowned and resumed to walk, this time his legs hurried up, almost running. Night was falling and the lights of a village caught his view. There was nothing better than a carnage to help him clearing his head. Between the trees, observing a big fancy house beyond some little huts, the man smirked maliciously. What a fine distraction he has found!

He is close. Ailyn felt her heart shaken, one hand laid upon her chest. The black strands of hair tied by a ribbon grew warmer into her neckline. She laughed at herself a bit, mocking her own trembling legs, comparing her behaviour with a dreamer teenager's and then the laughter got spiced by a shade of anger. Annabelle talks about love, about repentance. As if! Her head waved in denial. I am attracted and curious, that's all... A confident smirk adorned her pretty face. We are far too different, the man barely has some culture! And she nodded in agreement with those ideas, sillily trying to ignore the secret admiration she felt for Bankotsu.
To her sister, Ailyn has mentioned the mercenary's ambition for power, even naming his greed as "ridiculous", nevertheless, deep inside she has already compared to himself in some occasions. What made them different were simply and purely their manners, the lass was a bit more sophisticated. To deride Bankotsu was to ridicule her very self and that was exactly what she did when underrating him. Just concluding that made Ailyn feel a headache. It would be better to keep on believing that she would meet the man only to satiate her lust.
In large steps, panting for anticipation, the Red Rose glimpsed a village covered by smoke from the top of a hill.
That scenery looked familiar. When walking alongside the Band of Seven, the lass witnessed many places suffering the same fate, so she knew pretty well who was the troublemaker behind such mess. Her eyes rolled. The few strands of his bangs sparkled into the cleavage of the woman's corset. It would be so simpler if she has chosen to summon one of her portals and just showed up wherever the warrior was, still a part of hers insisted on delaying their encounter as long as she could.
Should he not be climbing that damn mount by now? Ailyn wondered as her body hovered graciously over the ground, then she walked through the tiny houses, passing over dead bodies covered in blood that were just left sinking into the dark sand. The only building still illuminated by lantern lights was a big house beyond, music was sounding from there. Ailyn narrowed her eyes, suspicion filling her core. Her legs hurried to climb the steps of that property, soon she opened the red front doors carefully, then gazed to the sides. Sky-blue pools assimilated the view of many women bodies thrown over the floor, their spilled blood painted the wood under their cold joints, several reddish drops decorated the walls. One more time, the foreigner's eyes rolled up and down, she sighed before releasing a short chuckle. Ailyn couldn't care less about his blood thirst, what worried her the most was the integrity of her dress, so she lifted it's skirt, unveiling her shins. No corpse would spoil the fancy fabric of her garment that night.
Her ears followed the song, from behind a door Ailyn stood to spy and all of sudden her own blood felt like burning into her veins. Bankotsu was almost laying upon a futon, a lustrous smile on his face denounced how much fun he was having. Next to a wall, a frightful girl was trying to. control her shaking limbs to not miss the right notes on an musical instrument the European lass has never seen in her life. By the mercenary's side, another beauty was holding her breath while finishing to untie the ribbon that attached the chest and shoulder plate, last pieces of armor he was still wearing.
