"Well done, Shinrinko!" Himawari praised her at the end of a clash between two wooden sticks. Months of training had some effect, and the foreigner lass' reflexes improved a lot. She could go up and down, she could jump with dexterity and spin the long weapon gracefully in the air, defending herself and attacking the opponent when it was necessary.
"Thank you, I thought I would never make it!" Smiling, Anna wiped the sweat on her forehead and stuck the stick in the grass. Right beside them, Motoko and Yoru were applauding the performance. "Now I am ready to defend everyone..." She said, then took the improvised weapon and swirled with it again.
"As if you needed this to protect us!" Yoru's older sister giggled and came closer. "But those afternoon trainings has been fun." She poked Belle with an elbow.
"Yes..." The red-haired apprentice sighed, looking glad, even if her eyes sometimes seemed to be lost in a far away place.
"Come now, miss Shinrinko, you promised me!" Yoru pulled her sleeve.
"I haven't forgotten, little Yoru." She slid a hand on the top of the child's head, then took her hand. After a brief nod to the other friends, Annabelle walked along the girl into the woods. Together they sat in front of a stream which descended from the Mount Hakurei and crossed those lands. "Close your eyes," the lass asked and was obeyed. Graffiti rounded pools sealed as Yoru's tiny hands rested over her own legs. "Now take a deep breath and concentrate yourself," there came another guidance that was immediately followed.
It has been a while since Anna started to spend some hours of the day teaching the girl some important things about that powers she has born with. Although Yoru skills had a distinct origin, their auras were similar in purity. Sometimes, when the pupil found herself already relaxed, a tenuous clear light evolved her forms and she used to listen every peculiarity of nature's sounds, her ears could capture detailedly even her own inner noises. In a few days, Yoru has achieved to overcome expectations and was able to heal wounded animals, she managed to fix even an injury on Motoko's knee. There were times that the kid got to create a barrier in partnership with Annabelle. They discovered a way to share their energies while uniting each other's palms, repeating a pray Yoru has never heard, both managed to raise a dome around themselves. The bluish bubble would slowly grow and cover their surroundings, then it was time to Belle move away and let her follower handle it herself. Bit by bit, Yoru became able to sustain the forcefield longer than before.
"You will be an amazing priestess in the future." The Scottish lass stated without showing a glimpse of doubt.
"Thanks to your help, miss Shinrinko." Her cheeks blushed and she smiled tenderly.
"I just showed you some ways, the best person to guide you would be an acquaintance of mine..." Anna touched her shoulder and thought: Kikyo, I'm so grateful for you to show me the map of this place, for making me meet this people. She breathed in deeply. Even if I am to depart someday, everything I lived with them is very precious to me.
"You're so strong, miss..." The kid said, startled, regaining her attention.
"I wish I was, little Yoru." She shook her head, serenely smiling.
"You are, I watch you every day. I see you with my sister, with Motoko, with mistress Keiko, with the other villagers, you deliver yourself completely, even if you still feel sadness inside your heart."
"Sadness? Why would I feel sad being here with you all?" Annabelle passed an arm around the child's neck, sitting by her side. "Don't say that, little one. I'm quite alright."
"I know we're not the cause of your sorrow, but this sadness is accompanying you since before your arrival in here. I think it is because of that man who has taken your moon away." While speaking, she settled her head on Anna's lap and stroked one blue embroidery on the woman's skirt. "I think you like him."
"You're mistaken, I have forgot about him already." Her voice sounded discretely deep, even if her affable hand was caressing the girl's straight raven locks. "We should go, it's getting late."
"If Shinrinko doesn't want to talk about it, I respect that. But, Shinrinko, never forget that Yoru will always be by your side for better or worse." As they walked side by side, Yoru said friendly. Annabelle took her in the arms and carried the child on her back till they get home.
One more day passed, night fell as quiet as every past ones, to sleep was a burden though. The White Rose sought to remember recent experiences, she thought of those people whose were sheltering her, her mind focused on the pink flowers which surrounded the huts, the majestic mount beyond the fog. Therefore, she could get herself distracted from the melancholy past and convince her depths to enjoy the present. Still, when she was appeased by sleepiness, dreams came uncontrolled to remind her that time of her life which could not be easily erased. Even so, the ginger outsider would already wake with a smile drew on her lips, for Annabelle has made a vow to herself that, no matter what, she would never evolve the noble neighbors into her dramas.
Routine followed normally, in the sun she used to harvest fruits and vegetables, train with Himawari, wander around with Yoru, then teach the kid to deal with her powers and start healing diseases from the old. With twilight coming, the foreigner would play the lyre Motoko carved in wood for her. The children loved to hear her sing and watch her dancing. Anna even began to teach them her native tongue and those little ones were so smart that they were already completing sentences in Gaelic. At last, when the sky was dark, she usually had dinner with the elder Keiko, who received the lass in her humble home and liked to share ancient stories full of local folklore, in that way Anna learned a lot about yokai, native people and mostly she acknowledged the tales of a sanctified monk called Hakushin.
Again she would sleep, and in such calm and sheltering flow days became months. Peace was lightly disturbed only when her sister appeared, and even so, such meeting has been fruitful. Then, the cycle resumed to be fulfilled like it has been going, till in one afternoon which looked like any other at the first glance, Annabelle was sitting with Yoru on the highest treetop of the wood, contemplating the mount when a strange sort of pulsation came from there.
"Shinrinko, is there something wrong?" The girl saw her splaying a hand on her own chest and noted a lilac light gleaming on that spot.
"We have to leave this place! Right now!" The lass held the child, her white light contoured them both and they flew together to the village. As soon as Anna's feet touched the ground, the sky above bursted in rays and the transparent dome which evolved all the region began to shatter in particles like glass.
"The barrier!" Keiko shouted from her hovel.
"It's impossible!" An old man got desperate, his dread spread to the others like a giant wave.
The sky once so colorful and clear didn't take long to dim and assume a color far known to Annabelle. The most dark, intense shade of purple. The whitish mist that surrounded the woods gradually faded, being replaced by dark poisonous fog. The huge mount was no more adorned by beautiful vegetation, all that remained were it's rocks and the dark brown earth. Annabelle's heart was beating so fast by then that her whole body trembled, from head to toes. Yoru called her a plenty of times, the lass' hearing delayed to capture the little one's voice. Gasping, the woman looked to the sides, she could hear the roars from creatures who were leaving the top of the mount to approach the unprotected village. While passing a hand around her neck, Annabelle understood that the horde of monsters was coming for her sake, because her aura emanated unrestrained, without any accessory to conceal it. So she had an idea - the only one possible.
"This place isn't safe anymore." Anna announced to everyone. "Go away from here, now!"
"But Shinrinko, what about you?" Yoru embraced her legs desperately.
"Listen to me, little one!" She knelt down in front of the girl and held her hands. "Remember what I taught you?"
"Huh?" Terrified, Yoru couldn't immediately identify the matter Annabelle was referring to.
"You will hide with everyone and keep them safe inside a forcefield while I distract those yokai, understood?" The lass looked her directly in the eyes while cupping her face.
"You can't face then alone!" Almost yelling, the girl grabbed Anna's arms.
"I do!" Although the panting breathe, she smiled. "Trust me! Now, run away from here!"
"No!" Thick tears began to pour from the greyish globes.
"Himawari..." Annabelle could make herself clear with just one gaze. Yoru's older sister nodded and then pulled the child firmly, taking her away from the foreigner friend. Screaming and shouting, the kid pointed her hands into Anna's direction, who has stood on her feet.
"You're demon slayers, cannot leave her alone in there!" Yoru continued to whine as being carried by her sibling. The other villagers were coming right behind.
"You need to have more trust in Shinrinko!" Running by Himawari's side, Motoko said wholeheartedly. "We may have some skill to fight and even to defeat yokai with medium powers, but we're no match for so many. As for Shinrinko, her power is so marvelous and unknown that I'm sure she can handle them all!"
"And if any yokai come near to the villagers, we will be there to defend them!" Himawari complemented.
While the group ran dawn ravines, going to a cave to hide from danger, Annabelle stood on her feet, at the same place, just waiting for the monsters which were enclosing, starving for her benignant aura and for the Shikon shard into her chest. Their speed was so intense that the colorful horde looked like they were one. However, in the moment they got a few inches from the woman covered by alabaster lumen, the yokai stopped and just kept floating ahead of her, staring at the little human in silence.
Her eyes shone bright like two indigo lanterns, her complexion looked so serene that almost provoked somnolence in them. The yokai were mesmerized. At last, keeping her calmness, Belle took a few steps closer to the biggest of those beasts - an enormous serpent as silver as the moonlight, with eyes as red as blood. Her hand reached it's head, her eyes closed and she murmured enchanted words. When her turquoises reopened and her fingers descended from the scaled forehead, the crowd of demonic creatures simply turned their back and went away.
"Interesting" Anna heard a male voice which she knew far well saying so.
"Where you here the whole time?" She asked, with her back still turned to the mysterious being. Trying to conceal the surprising sensation, the lass made another question: "How are Rin and Jaken?" She breathed in then, relaxing her shoulders.
"I sensed your scent blended with Naraku's yokai horde." In such an unexpressive tone, the daiyokai told, ignoring the second part of that conversation.
"Then you're also chasing him down." Her body spun slowly, her gaze absorbing that austere figure's features without rush. The valuable aurum eyes fell upon her forms, analyzing every knew aspect Annabelle had, since her exotic clothes to the rice powder on her face. "Do you know where he is?" She asked carefully, wanting to demonstrate unpretentiousness.
"Where he has been." He corrected, pointing his index finger to the place that once was a mount. During the confusion, the western lass barely had the time to watch it collapse. Sky-blue globes widened as she covered her mouth with one hand.
"All this time?!" Anna inquired, passing her fingers under some coppery waved locks upon her ears.
"He was hiding behind a forcefield." Sesshomaru revealed without any commotion. "Such effort to get rid of so little hindrance..." It was possible to identify a discrete mockery in his tone.
Hidden behind a forcefield, and with my pendant's help! Still horrified, she embraced herself. After listening the words uttered by the yokai who has already turned his back and began to walk away, the lass asked: "what hindrance?"
"Ask him yourself when the opportunity comes, but do not forget..." He stopped, one golden eye over his pelt locked on her figure. "You could be the next." Sesshomaru warned, his voice as deep as a mysterious abyss. Then he vanished into the dark mist.
Filled by questions without answers, Annabelle wandered around the vast nothing that landscape became. Her feet sunk into the black earth, with no flowers, nor even a strand of grass. Nearly suffocating, she ran through the forest turned into desert. She needed to find him, no matter how. That exotic clear outfit she has been wearing had it's sleeves and corset teared by dry branches in the way, it's bright color became grimy with dirt.
The water from the stream Anna used to bathe, play with Yoru and even train the girl has changed into liquid miasma. The nature Anna loved so much was dead, decayed by his venomous touch.
"It's my fault..." Her fingers pressed hard the cheeks painted in white, then they hid the blue eyes. She felt ashamed of her choices, and fearful for what would become of the people who sheltered her this whole time. "It's all my fault!"
"Do not give yourself so much credit." At last, a voice she longed to hear for months and which now provoked such dread sounded near. Annabelle looked around, almost losing balance she held onto a dry tree trunk.
Clouds moved away, giving passage to a big bubble contoured by a dark miasma hurricane. When the sphere touched the ground, it seemed to burn the earth for the black color it has assumed. The smoke around the purple bubble faded, Annabelle rested her back against the tree and watched as a creature was regenerating it's body inside the circle. His joints were remade, piece by piece, then new clothes adorned him, and finally a strange kind of armor, apparently made of his own flesh, formed around some parts of his constitution. A big red eye opened in his abdomen and it's yellowish iris twirled to the sides. Green tentacles were waving at his back.
"Naraku..." the lass whispered weakly, like her strength has been drained out, not a muscle could move. It was him, she knew. However, he looked like a complete stranger. Into his eyes everything Belle could see was an uncontrollable thirst for the others' blood and suffering. The grin formed on the hanyo's lips caused chills all over her spine. A strong arm lifted straight forward, the hand till then closed just opened and finally a silky white ribbon unwinded from his fingers, a crystal moon waved like a pendulum, reflecting the astonished woman's face on it's glassy shapes.
What have you done? She wanted to ask, yet her voice couldn't sound.
"Take it, I don't need it anymore." Naraku shook the pendant as it was a rattle.
Her trembling legs moved clumsily, one foot stumbled over a rock almost making Annabelle fall while walking towards him. The lass resumed to step ahead only when finding some balance again, so she walked slowly, fearfully onto the spider's direction, not knowing how to describe the sensations flowing within her core. As the woman was getting close, his scarlet gaze narrowed and his grin reduced till his lips were straight.
They have finally met again.
To be continued...

I chose to name this chapter as the Synthesis' vesion of the Evanescence's song because it's title is coherent to the feeling of rupture. Finally reality hits Anna with it's full strength... and NARAKU IS BACK! Are you ready?
