Annabelle delayed their proximity for as long as she could. Naraku remained where he was, still offering her moon pendant. When the lass could almost touch the object, the hanyo brought it back to his palm and chuckled.
She inevitably remembered the last time they have met and her heart vacillated. On such occasion, the spider has been so vulnerable and his sayings had moved her so much... Yet, who was the person standing in front of her right now? There was an obscure intention behind those small rubies, it was discreet, but insistently hovered there.
His cold, vile fingers proceeded inviting hers. Anna was certain she was being tested and wouldn't allow the fear to continue paralyzing her joints, even if she felt like the pair of crimson eyes would suck her in, so direct they were. Her hand touched his, covering the crystal, then his fingers closed upon hers, holding them firmly. Anna almost jumped.
"I killed her." In a low deep tone he revealed while gazing at her intensely.
Annabelle's lips parted to ask "who?", then her eyes subtly widened. Sesshomaru's words echoed into her mind.

"Such effort to get rid of so little hindrance..." It was possible to identify a discrete mockery in his tone.
"What hindrance?"
"Ask him yourself when the opportunity comes, but do not forget..." He stopped, one golden eye over his pelt locked on her figure. "You could be the next." Sesshomaru warned, his voice as deep as a mysterious abyss. Then he vanished into the dark mist.

"Kikyo..." Tremulous, she murmured while feeling an icy cold running within. Naraku released a deep chuckle and gradually let go of her hand. Belle pulled her body away from the demon, blue watery eyes rolled over his entire figure as she pressed the crystalized moon against her desperate chest, holding her breath to avoid surrendering to hysteria. She felt rage, disbelief and an unmeasurable pain inside. Definitely, that wasn't the same Naraku who came for her when he was shattered in pieces.
"Did you like my new body?" Her tormentor arched a thin black eyebrow, sounding almost seductive. "Sesshomaru has damaged it a bit, but I already fixed the mess he made." At last there was an explanation for the reason he had been rebuilding his parts in the instant of his appearance. Nevertheless, all that mattered for Annabelle was his ultimate deed.
"How could you?" The indignant question came in a whisper.
He began to close the distance between them two, heavy steps leaded him to her, his shadow covered her fragile silhouette. Still, Annabelle raised her face and stared at the hanyo, with every emotion overflowing from her eyes. The villain looked taller than she remembered, the hand coming near to her cheek also seemed bigger. The lass tried to evade, there was no space for her to run though. She was cornered between the Spider and the leafless tree behind. So, after clearing her throat, the foreigner inquired:
"So now you're here to kill me, is that why you came?"
"It depends," without alterations, the arachnid said as his fingertips rubbed against her cheek, sliding to her chin. "Will you stay in my way?"
The Shikon shard inside Anna pulsed and warmed her chest, proving that Naraku still had the same effect on her, and it was crystal clear for him as well. Although in that moment, the spider demon wasn't smirking, Annabelle was certain that he must be having some fun at her cost.
"I just want to get away from you!" Her voice managed to go out in a shout.
"I see..." Red eyes narrowed wickedly, he could smell the scent of her sensations after all.
"What have you done to her?!" She was decided to resist though. The rage for what he has done had to be stronger than any reminiscent feeling she could still have for the monster.
"Kikyo's body is being dragged by the flow of this miasma river by now." Naraku, satisfied, told while catching Annabelle's hand and lowering if from her chest. The hanyo took the necklace from it so he could put the fair adornment around her neck himself, repeating the gesture of the red-haired lass on a night she wrongly has chosen to borrow him the jewel.
Belle turned her face and closed the turquoises tightly, not standing to meet his gaze for a second longer. To imagine the priestess in such conditions he has mentioned was torture. She couldn't believe the bastard has finally achieved to murder Kikyo. Then, the lass felt the soft touch of a hand over her bosom and her eyelids parted. Anna resumed to face him, the spider looked concentrated, a white light was leaving her skin and passing through that hostile hand, clearing the red orb on it's back. Naraku closed his eyes a bit, an embittered grin stained his features for a moment, then he looked at her once again.
"It's not the time yet," the demon said mysteriously, finally stepping behind and getting some distance.
Static at the same place, Belle just watched him disappear into a purplish mist raising to the skies, getting lost between the clouds. Then, each part of her body shuddered and a crushing sensation went from her stomach up to her head. It was fury. Instead of throwing herself on knees over the ground and cry for the misfortunes, the Scottish lass' light evolved her brightly and she rushed to look for the villagers who has sheltered her during the last months, needing to know if they were safe. In a few instants a bluish lumen reflected on her sight, it was lightening the entrance of a cave hidden between bushes, in a place far enough from the conflict, where the woods have survived and the air was still pure. Annabelle landed right in front of there and soon heard a childish voice calling:
"Shinrinko!" The blue light faded and Yoru came running from inside.
"You did it!" Anna leaned down and held her tight. "I'm so proud of you!" She stroked the girl's head.
"Your moon..." the little one noticed as soon as their embrace was undone, "he gave it back!"
Annabelle's teeth gritted under sealed lips. The descendant of the fairies breathed in deeply to contain the rage still burning into her core, then her gaze met the villagers hidden in the depths of the cave covered by moss. Everyone looked visibly shocked by the terrors they have endured in the past hours. Anna's heart ached just by witnessing them in such conditions, for she had no one to blame other than herself. Her weakness has leaded all of them to suffering. Her hands turned into fists under the long white sleeves.
"Didn't I tell you she would come back?" Motoko gave little jumps coming closer, then she touched Yoru's head, messing with her black hair. Himawari looked at them from the rocky entrance, sighing in relief.
"Yoru, Motoko," Annabelle started to talk, looking stern. "I need you to hold it together a little while longer, alright?" She touched one shoulder of each girls.
"What will you do?" Motoko questioned.
"I came to know that something terrible happened to a friend of mine, I need to find her as quickly as I can." Anna explained, containing her breath to not show how worried she was.
"Go then, hurry!" Yoru said, smiling widely even if she felt tired "I think I can still maintain a barrier, and if anything happens we have Himawari, she is pretty good with the stick."
"Thank you" Belle caressed the younger one's cheek and held her one more time, then she hugged Motoko as well.

Far away from every one of his foes, in a dark and cold locus, Naraku was floating into his own forcefield, the green tentacles on his back were softly waving in consonance with his vast raven hair. In one hand he had the darkened Shikon no Tama sparkling almost complete.
A few shards are missing, one which I still have to find the whereabouts, then Kohaku's, Koga's, Ailyn's and... Annabelle's. Red eyes blinked slowly, recalling when his hand touched her chest and what he has felt – an inner burning which wasn't caused by lust.
If you absorb that shard as it is now, you might be purified at the same instant. The voices inside the cursed pearl said. Since when he hid in the mount, that choir became even more uncontrollable. However, what felt unbearable in the beginning turned out into a profitable thing. Following those voices' advices was an efficient way to evade from everything he considered as a bump on his plans – his human origins most of all.
At last, his heart laid into his chest no more, and that void within seemed to comfort him most of the time, yet when Naraku saw himself in front of Annabelle, something inside caused a huge ache. Facing her melancholy and enraged gestures brought him no pleasure, and while touching that face, cold of deception, he almost felt icy as well. Embittered, the spider realized he didn't achieve to get completely rid of his humanity, at least the part connected to the foreigner lass.
Why did you not kill her? The voices persisted. Would it not be easier?
"I do not want to kill her." An irritated sigh came out. "I have no need to do so, Annabelle will not interfere with my plans." Naraku remade the sentence, as if it would make he look a bit more indifferent towards the woman.
Then you must find a way to defile that shard so you can take it from her. You know what it means, right?
"I do..." He slid a hand over his forehead, under the black curled bangs. I'll have to make her suffer.
Do you think you are capable, Naraku? The souls inside the stone challenged him. The hanyo laughed, even if he found no amusement on that at all.
Kanna entered the gloomy chamber, her whiteness glowed into such darkness. Naraku looked at his incarnation sideways, the little girl was holding the spherical mirror in hands, in the glass' reflection was Ailyn, the twin of that creature who has been tormenting Naraku's reason. The blondie lass stumbled while wandering over the ruins of Mount Hakurei, her hands were pulling rocks and throwing them away as if she was looking for something underneath the debris.
Looking for something? Oh no...
Looking for someone.
Naraku hummed, then a disdainful grin showed his bright white teeth.
An idea was painted inside his mind. A very mischievous one.

She must be somewhere around here! Annabelle hovered over each branching from that purple river, and couldn't find not even a sign of the miko. Noticing she was already wasting the last sighs of her stamina, Anna had no choice but stop flying and just run through the desert lands, seeking for the demised woman in all ways she could. And even feeling so tired, with a last glimpse of hope twinkling inside of her heart, she knelt over the earth, splayed hands on the soil and with closed eyes the lass profoundly concentrated herself on everything the underground had to offer. She could sense roots, worms, organic remains, rocks and a thin trail which began to be drew into her head, till she could perceive something unusual not too far from there. The lass ran again, following her intuition.
Her steps ceased abruptly, feet sunk into dark sand. Where the river turned into a cascade, over rocks and waving along the poisoned water flow was Kikyo's body floating with it's front turned down, the long dark locks were loosened, spread by the sides, moving at the same rhythm as the purple deadly liquid.
Although Annabelle felt exhausted, she found strength to summon her powers again. Contoured by the white light, the lass didn't think twice before grabbing the priestess by the arms and taking her from the stream. She turned the woman's body and met the dark eyes half-opened, along with a tiny smile on her pale lips.
"You're still alive!" Anna accommodated Kikyo on her lap and squeezed her face, moving away some wet strands of hair stuck on it's corners. "Thank goddess, you're alive!" Teardrops formed on coppery eyelashes. Paying more attention to Kikyo's condition, she noticed a large open cut starting on the miko's shoulder and going down her chest. "I can't believe he did this to you!" Anna held her in the arms.
"... how did you know?" The lethargic priestess asked.
"The bastard came to tell me in person!" She hissed her resentment.
"And he did not try anything against you?" Her voice sounded low as a weak breeze, yet her dark eyes were direct as always, locked with the foreigner's.
"No..." Confused, Belle looked to the distance, not focusing in any specific spot of the demised surroundings. A new ache consumed her heart. Oh, but she didn't want to dedicate one single thought for him anymore! The lass shook her head and turned every effort to the inert miko in her hands. She touched Kikyo's wound, blue eyes closed and whiteness contoured her fingers. "I will heal you," Anna announced decidedly and went on with the ritual. Her body leaned down so their faces could be closer. If Kikyo wasn't so shattered, maybe she would feel embarrassed by the proximity. Annabelle was so focused that she didn't even realize it, her mouth opened and from it's depths the illuminated white thread descended to get in the priestess' throat.
Kikyo also sealed her blurred pools when feeling a warm peaceful sensation within. However, Annabelle's light didn't seem to be enough to disperse all that miasma concentrated in her core, nor to close that huge crack on the body carved in clay. The foreigner lass persisted on trying though, even if her limbs were already trembling, yet nothing happened.
"It will not work," the miko's voice was lower than before, her gaze met Anna's when their faces were already away. "Naraku's poison is more powerful than ever."
"But I have the gift to heal any living thing! That's impossible!" She squeezed the frail inert arms of the moribund woman.
"No, it is not." The priestess chuckled briefly, as if an elucidation has been unlocked into her mind. "For I am not a living thing, and my body is not made of flesh." She coughed in the end.
Without knowing what to say, yet finally aware of what was happening, the Scottish lass bit her lower lip and touched a hand on her own cheek, the air got stuck into her burning nostrils, it has been a hard labour to hold the breath to prevent a tempestuous cry to descend.
"You know what is more ironic?" Kikyo said, though speaking seemed to approach her incomplete soul to it's end. "He has sent me to the same mount I oriented you to go, and I did not notice it. I have never payed attention on the map I gave you. I just knew that sort of place existed," she gasped. "Naraku put a moribund bandit on my way knowing I would pity the man and then fulfill his last wish, to bury a lock of his hair on Mount Hakurei. That was how he attracted me to the place where would be my grave, so he said."
"Kikyo, it's my fault!" Belle wiped her own eyes harshly, forbidding any tear to fall. "Months ago, Naraku came to me nearly defeated and I, pitying him, have borrowed my pendant!" She pointed the jewel adorning her neck. "This stone has the power to conceal the aura of it's owner, and I just borrowed it to him! So, all this time he was right under my nose and I couldn't see it!" Anna blamed herself, feeling sad and outrageous at the same time, barely able to face the priestess in the eye, for it would be even more painful having to deal with the disappointment on her semblance.
A cold hand softly touched her left cheek, surprising the White Rose.
"Your heart is kind, you did what you thought it was right."Almost inaudible, Kikyo spoke in such a tender tone that it didn't look like herself. The austerity that once used to mold her behavior didn't show it's nuances this time. Annabelle resumed to glance at her, and found the miko with a tranquil smile on her milky lips. "If you want to help me, then take me to a place where my soul collectors can feed me," she asked.
"Yes, of course!" Anna immediately put one of Kikyo's arm around her neck and helped the woman to stand up, carrying her frail clay body on one side. "Just lead me the way".

"Bankotsu, where the hell are you?!" Ailyn was already hoarse of screaming out loud repeatedly. She has been wandering on Mount Hakurei's ruins and the lands around for hours by then. "Bankotsu!" The lass spun, looking at every side, cleaning the dirt in her face and dress, already panting, still she didn't give up. "Bankotsu!" Her lonely shout echoed across the decayed vastness.
"You will not see him again." A deep, wicked voice came in response. Naraku emerged behind the woman, stealing a scared scream from her throat.
The twin of the lass he used to lay together twirled and jumped away from the hanyo. She gasped while her eyes widened, beholding his dreadful new looks. Naraku just chuckled in response. It would be fun to see the last piece of Ailyn Rose's sanity shatter after all.
To be continued...

Every action has a consequence, and Annabelle may learn this lesson in the worst possible way...
