Had he been any less the stoic aristocrat he'd been known to be, Sesshoumaru may have rolled his eyes at the annoying little hanyou. As it was, he could do little more than growl to himself as the infuriating hanyou's running footsteps drew closer. He sighed inwardly at his own misfortune, wishing for the hundredth time that season that he had left the half-breed dead.
"Dammit, Sesshoumaru!" Inuyasha bellowed, crashing unceremoniously onto the riverbank, sword brandished and gravel flying. "Answer me, you sadistic freak of nature! If you're gonna keep tryin' to slice me to bits with the damn thing, you might as well tell me where you got it from!"
He turned from his reflection on the water's still surface to stare blankly at the boy who panted breathlessly a few feet from him. He eyed the hanyou openly, shaking his head slowly as he allowed himself to give in.
Just this once, he vowed. And if he begins to annoy me, I'll simply kill him... again.
Inuyasha stepped backward , his eyes narrowed.
"What are you smiling about all of a sudden?" he demanded, trying to shake the eerie feeling that crept up his spine.
"You have my attention... little brother," Sesshoumaru said in an overly bored tone as he looked about for a place to sit. "Isn't that what you hoped to achieve? Crashing about and waving your sword as if to welcome all manner of scrutiny?"
He settled for a slightly raised rock formation at the base of a shady tree and retired there, his back to the rough bark. He crossed his arms and stared at the boy expectantly.
"I am waiting," he sighed.
Inuyasha lowered his sword, staring at the demon who sat so calmly before him.
"What are you doing?" he ground out another demand, staring as is dumbfounded.
Sesshoumaru sighed again. "I am quite capable of having a civilized conversation, Inuyasha," he spat, flexing the fingers of his left hand. "It is the patience to deal with brash, vulgar, riotous miscreants that I lack."
He nearly chuckled at the affronted look on the boy's face.
"Well are you gonna tell me where you got it from or not?" Inuyasha growled, plopping down on the ground where he stood and resting Tetsusaiga at his side..
"That is none of your concern," the elder youkai grunted, turning his head toward the sound of a rushing waterfall a fair distance to his left.
His brow furrowed, an ear twitching as he felt something cold and sharp jab at his lower left arm. He glared at the hanyou, who returned the heated stare, the barest point of Tetsusaiga's blade still embedded in the arm.
"I would ask that you remove that offensive piece of scrap," he growled lowly, eyes narrowing.
"Yea? Why don'tcha make me?" Inuyasha muttered from the corner of his mouth, giving the arm another good poke.
Sesshoumaru snarled, eyes glazed as he bared viciously sharp fangs at the stubborn hanyou.
"Ah, spoilsport," Inuyasha relented, shoving the sword back into its sheath and rolling his eyes. "I had more fun tryin' to tear you apart. This truce thing is starting to backfire."
He glowered at the boy a little longer before turning his attention back to the soothing lull of his natural surroundings. It was growing more and more taxing on his nerves, maintaining this makeshift peace treaty. As the years went by, he found himself giving up more of his dignity and self-respect, and falling further from grace, the longer he remained in the company of this bumbling dolt. His steadfast resolve, to remain indifferent to the familial bond fabled to exist between brothers, had begun to wane.
She'd contributed to it... The years spent with her at his side. Her caring and giving nature. Her willingness to forgive the world all its misdeeds and welcome it back with open arms. Her endless patience and unconditional love... That had affected him most of all.
Sesshoumaru sighed inwardly, a habit he had developed only recently, balking at the unexpected changes within himself. Who would have thought such a small, fragile creature could do such tragically irreparable damage to his so-called impenetrable wall of indifference...
"A gift, as you once proclaimed," he supplied finally, closing his eyes to the boy's confused expression. "A reward of sorts from an old friend of our great Father's."
There was a moment of silence, then a rustling of garments, then came the unnerving wave of discomfiture as he felt the boy settle directly at his side. He opened one weary eye.
"What do you think you're doing?"
Inuyasha gave no reply, simply turning his head, ears lowered and eyes half-lidded, looking off into the distance.
"What'd you have to do to get it?"
The question lacked the usual traces of mocking the boy was so good at carrying out, and he felt somehow more compelled to answer in earnest.
"Torohima enlisted my aid in procuring the heart of Ryokotsusei," he replied, the barest hint of venom in his voice as he uttered the hated name. "Not an entirely difficult task for one such as myself. But Torohima's intentions are never what they seem."
Inuyasha thought for a moment. "So... what he really wanted to see was Tenseiga in action..."
The were both silent.
"I wonder why?" Inuyasha inquired out loud an instant later.
"I can hardly bring myself to care what the old man hoped to discover," Sesshoumaru grunted, standing in one fluid motion. "Demons of his tremendous age have little else to do other than to amuse themselves at others' expenses."
An image of Bokuseno came to mind, and he shook his head derisively.
"I guess you'd know," the boy laughed, sidestepping the glare pointed in his direction. "How old are you anyway?! I bet you'd be one dried up old prune about now, if you were human. Maybe I should stop calling you 'Sesshoumaru' and start calling you 'Grandpa.'"
He caught himself as his steps faltered. The bastard half-breed was laughing raucously a good distance away. It would seem that he would end up having to kill the unsightly cretin after all. And here he had been, so caught up in this strangely familiar exchange of words, he'd nearly forgotten how much he detested the little runt.
*~~~
"You like him, don't you?"
Kagome gawked at Inuyasha over the rim of her teacup. Sunlight filtered into the quaint little dining area through the small, square window behind the hanyou's right shoulder, illuminating his short spiky hair in an angelic halo. The expression on his face was calm and lucid, the perfect mask for the reeling insanity she was sure must have been creeping under the surface.
"What are you talking about, Inuyasha?" she asked slowly, lowering the cup and casting him a weird look.
He stared. "Idiot. I meant Sesshoumaru. I saw how you were looking at him last night. My nose may be dull, but my eyes sure aren't."
Why, that sneaky little peeping tom!
She blushed furiously, raising the cup to her lips to cover the color in her cheeks. She thought she had hidden her feelings well. She'd avoided him as much as was humanly possible in that little house. From sticking to her mother till the woman shooed her out from underfoot, to taking the kids to her room to play, she'd done what she could to keep them from being along together. And there was no longer any doubt that he did want to be alone with her. The way he kept watching her... and that kiss...
"Stop daydreaming and listen to me!" Inuyasha hollered, successfully scaring her half to death. "Do you understand what you're getting yourself into? Five centuries isn't enough to change the fact that he is who is he. You can't just expect him to make a fresh new space in his heart for you. He doesn't fall in love, Kagome. Even if he got with a human, it'd be for the sex. That's all! You can't fall for somebody like that! Just tell me you won't get attached, ok? Kagome?"
She was silent, body tensed as she glared down into her cup.
"Can't you even answer me?!"
"I would if you were making any sense!" she flared back in denial, slamming the cup down, its contents sloshing over the rim.
She winced as the hot tea lapped at her fingers and wrist, pulling the appendage back quickly. Her vision swam with indignant tears, and she drew back from his grasp as he sought to help.
"Whatever you think is going on," she yelled, wiping at her face with her uninjured hand, "you're completely wrong! There's no way in a hundred years I'd be interested in someone like that!"
"What about five hundred, Kagome?" he asked lowly, eyes narrowed and brow furrowed. "Is five hundred enough to get you interested?"
She shook her head in disbelief. " You moved on, Inuyasha. You did. Not me. I won't hold it against you, but don't you ever question where my feelings belong. Even if there was some small part of me that believes he could feel something... anything for me, I know there's no way he could ever look at me that way... Not after..."
"Making a nuisance of yourself as usual, Inuyasha?" the silky smooth voice came from the back doorway. "Why am I not surprised?"
Kagome's face burned hotter than the reddened skin of her hand. she clenched her mouth shut, glaring at the hanyou sitting across from her at the table. Her pointed stare promised worlds of pain for him, daring him to say a single word.
"I'm just tryin' to figure out what's goin' on with you two," Inuyasha grunted, ignoring her wide-eyed stare.
DIE DIE DIIIEEE!!!!! she screeched at him in her mind, wishing the ground would open up and swallow him up for a change.
She could feel her face begin to twitch as a large, warm body lowered itself into the seat next to hers.
"I haven't a clue what you mean," Amaru breathed noncommittally, his gaze slipping from the splatter of tea on the table, to the angry red welts that now adorned Kagome's pale skin. "What have you done to yourself?"
The lightly murmured question caught her off guard, her mind taking a moment to focus in on what was happening to her. He'd taken her hand into his, his big strong palm swallowing hers whole. The long white fingers caressed her skin gently, sending tremors along her arm.
"See?!?" Inuyasha exploded, pointing a finger and scowling. " That's what I'm talking about! Get your grubby paws off of her, goddammit!"
Kagome barely heard the hanyou's outburst, her attention fully captured by the demon before her. Amaru's hands were intoxicatingly gentle. He smiled ever so slightly as he traced the curves of her fingers with his thumb, his head bent above their clasped palms. She was blissfully unaware of his intentions, her lips barely parted as his mouth touched her skin. She vaguely noted that his hair was much lighter than she remembered it to be, the tendrils feathering over her wrist, now free from the confines of the baseball cap. But as his tongue flicked over the sensitized area, an alarm inside her began to sound.
"W-what...?"
The words were stammered, and she shook her head violently to clear it, tugging at the hand that was captured by his own.
"Get the fuck off!" Inuyasha interjected, chucking his empty cup across the table directly at Amaru's head.
The elder demon caught the thing easily, lowering it to the table top and raising unperturbed eyes to Inuyasha as he slowly released Kagome's hand. She scurried to her feet, the electricity in the air as tangible as swamp water. Without words and without actions, she knew the two were at odds, and looked around desperately for something to distract them before they tore her mother's kitchen apart.
"Daddy," a sullen little voice came from behind her.
Saved again!
Kimi padded into the dining nook, going straight to her father and climbing onto his lap. Inuyasha embraced the girl, his earlier anger completely forgotten as he patted the little silvery head that rested on his chest.
"Didn't know you were awake, munchkin," the hanyou murmured lovingly.
Kagome looked away, twisting her hand unconsciously as she stared out the window.
"You love him still."
She jumped, looking up at Amaru as he stood near her right elbow. The strange mix of emotions in his eyes was too much to bear, and she looked away from him as well.
"You'll have me regretting the decision to bring him here," he murmured, his eyes following the delicate curve of her neck down to milky white shoulders.
"They're leaving soon, anyway," she sighed frowning as she stared down at her hands. "It doesn't matter... That's all in the past. Right where it belongs."
His head tilted to the side as he studied her, his right hands reaching for hers. Their eyes met, unspoken words passing between them. His gaze drifted to her lips and she blushed.
He smiled, leaning down until his lips were close to her ear. "Soon enough, you will have a... sizable diversion to wean you from this silly infatuation. I may not have been able to sway you with displays of his weaknesses before, but I can promise that this time... my triumph is inevitable."
Her eyes widened at the sinfully suggestive words as he turned and slipped out into the living room. Little threat could be held in the sultry promise, but a shiver ran up her spine nonetheless. Sesshoumaru had been known to make good on his threats... and it would seem that Amaru would be known for no less...
