The dining room was set in its usual opulence, Sesshoumaru, in flowing white robes stood near the large hearth. Youko and Kagome were in the corner debating which herbs made better poultices. Inuyasha stood near the window pondering his brother’s words. As much as he would have liked to point out faults with the selection of Makai, he really couldn’t. It was a risky move but he understood the reasoning behind it. Besides, it might not even come to that. If Delno could be found and stopped quickly, there would be no reason to take her into the demon realm. He didn’t envy his brother for being one of the champions; he had yet to give his final decision to the Alliance on joining that number. A rare thing for a hanyou. Kagome had urged him to accept the revered position, but he’d been hesitant. Countless lifetimes of rebuke and prejudice had left it’s mark on him. Making him distrustful and overprotective. The centuries had done much to change the nature of his relationship with his older sibling. In that time, he had learned a great many things about Sesshoumaru, and he knew that his brother had grieved for the human child he kept locked away in his ice covered heart to this very day. -- Lilian looked down at herself, how the hell was she expected to go downstairs dressed like this? The robes were long and elegant, a pale lavender shot with silver. The high mandarin collar framed her neck nicely, creating sleek, smooth lines to the long sleeves that gathered at her wrist. She felt like something out of some science fiction or fantasy book at home on her shelves. She pulled her hair into a high tail and sighed, “No hope for it now”. Then she pulled the door open and looked down at Jaken. He bowed, “Follow me Miss Lilian” he squawked and tottered down the hall to the stairs onward. Lilian took the time to observe her surroundings, taking in the sculptures, the weaponry and the large portraits arrayed on the walls. She paused as they passed one which held a most familiar subject. J aken noticed her lack of movement and turned to find her staring up at Lord Sesshoumaru’s portrait. Her brow was furrowed as though pondering some great mystery, “He is most unusual isn’t he?” she asked softly. Jaken puffed up proudly, “My lord is beyond rival and compare”. She turned her eyes back to the toad, “Lucky me. I’m ready now Jaken”. Her heart began to race as they neared the tall doors leading to the dining room. Jaken rapped loudly on the door and she started at the sound. Then the doors swung open and she was bathed in the warm light from beyond. “Miss Lilian, my lord” Jaken announced. He backed away to leave her in the doorway alone. Youko let his golden eyes move over her appreciatively, he much preferred her in youkai attire. The simple lines and rich fabrics accentuating those things attractive in the wearer. He watched as Sesshoumaru moved away from the hearth, walking towards his new ward. The fox contained his knowing smile. Lilian watched the tall demon approach her, his expression unreadable, as passive as ever. Didn’t he ever show any kind of emotion or feeling? He held his clawed hand out to her and she looked at it, her gaze flickering back to his face. “By demon custom, a ward should bow to her protector and lord” he said. She sighed and bowed slightly, he nodded and placed her hand in the crook of his arm, leading her into the vast room. All eyes trained on them. The tall and pale demon lord and the fragile looking woman beside him. This was the Mekharat? She seemed uncertain and afraid, not the legendary warrior. On his arm, he felt the tiny tremor run through her. “No one here shall harm you” he told her, his tone pitched so low that she was certain only she could hear him. “Allow me to present the miko Kagome and her mate Inuyasha”. She nodded at them politely, “Hello”, her eyes were drawn at once to the white triangles atop his head. His eyes narrowed as she smiled, “What is it with women anyway?” he groused. Kagome laughed lightly, “Don’t mind him, most people who meet him look at the ears and then want to touch them. He doesn’t dislike it nearly as much as he lets on”. Inuyasha gave a sharp ‘Keh’ and folded his arms but said nothing else. “You’ve probably gotten it out of your system by now with Youko here” she went on. Lilian blushed and glanced to the silent fox, catching his leering grin. “Ummm, no. I haven’t felt the burning desire to touch any part of him” she said flatly. Inuyasha chuckled at her comment, “She has a good head on her shoulders, I like her” he remarked. She smiled at him, at least he had a sense of humor. She suddenly looked between he and Sesshoumaru, “You are related aren’t you?” she asked. Kagome nodded, “They are brothers” she offered. “Half” they said in unison. She let her vibrant eyes slide over Inuyasha slowly and then tipped her head back to look up at Sesshoumaru, “Brothers just the same” she murmured. Inuyasha watched his brother closely, the distance between him and the Mekharat, the way his eyes moved over her pale face. Was it possible? Was Sesshoumaru feeling something for his ward? He shook his head dismissively, he was imagining it. He had to be. Sesshoumaru turned and led her to the long mahogany table. The others filed over to take their places. Lilian at Sesshoumaru’s left and Youko beside her. As if driven by some unspoken command, the servants appeared, bearing the delicacies fit to grace the lord’s table. They moved quickly, quietly, smoothly. Plates were filled and glasses likewise. Then, like a subdued parade, they left. Sesshoumaru lifted his glass and took a single sip, silently signaling that those gathered at his table could begin eating. Lilian noticed this action and wondered at it. “As lord, I must be the first” he told her. She flinched slightly when he addressed her unspoken question. Youko noticed this and smiled, ‘He does that quite often’. She blinked and looked over at him. She nodded, and lifted her fork slowly. “Try thinking of waves” Sesshoumaru murmured to her, “If you can hold an image in your mind, then often your thoughts are unreadable”. She tried. ‘I should mention that it will not work between us’ he mentally added. She set her fork down with small snap of her wrist. Shooting glares at the two demons, ‘I’m not used to this and I can’t really say that I am liking it this far. Can you please try to stay out of my head?’. They merely shrugged, but she took the resulting silence as an agreement. It was unnerving having two very good looking men, human or not, poking around in her head. Focused as she was on her plate, she failed to see the two smirks that lit their faces. Youko noticed that she moved slowly, carefully. “Are you feeling your training?” he asked her. She nodded, “Oh yeah. I thought I was going to have to ask Jaken to help me get dressed. I think I reached muscle failure climbing out of the tub” she replied. Youko chuckled, “I will see that you have some ointment later, it will ease the soreness and the stiffness”. She smiled at him, “Thank you, that’s very kind. I appreciate it” she said sweetly. “Your body will adjust” Sesshoumaru said then, “And you will not ask such help of Jaken”. His tone was hard. Lilian blinked, “Kidding there mister personality” she huffed. Youko hid his smile behind the rim of his glass. ‘She doesn’t understand’ he told his friend, ‘She believes that you are angry with her now’. Sesshoumaru looked out across the table, ‘She too, will adjust’. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The evening seemed far too long for Lilian, worn out as she was. Kagome had drawn her into conversation eagerly and she couldn’t help but like the woman. Despite the fact that she could be called caustically sweet and one might go into sugar shock if they remained in her presence for any length of time. However, with Inuyasha’s gruff nature, it balanced well. She got the distinct feeling that things had not always been friendly between Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha and that perhaps Kagome had something to do with how they were now. She wanted to ask, but didn’t think she could. Not yet at any rate. Maybe when she wasn’t so new here. “So” she asked, “When can I go home?”. Youko shook his head, “Lilian, this is your home now. Until Delno is stopped” he told her once more. She sighed, “I can’t even go and get a few things of my own?” she pressed. Sesshoumaru turned to face her, “All of your needs will be provided for here” he replied. She frowned, “All of my needs?” she asked. He nodded. She smiled then, and Inuyasha was certain he had seen an evil glimmer in her eye. He leaned forward eagerly. “So if I needed or wanted something…you’d get it for me?” she asked. Sesshoumaru tapped his claws against his glass, “Woman do not make this Sesshoumaru repeat himself. I have said it will be seen to and so it shall”. She nodded, “I need something” she told him. Patience wearing thin, Sesshoumaru turned to her, “What is it?”. She shyly motioned him closer and he blinked before leaning towards her. She tipped her head up to whisper in his pointed ear, “I want some girl things. I want romance novels” she said breathily. Sesshoumaru stiffened, not only from her request but the sensation of warm breath caressing his ear. He pulled back and met her gaze, seeing her budding mirth. He was not about to let her have her fun, not now. “You’ll not have time for them Mekharat” he stated blandly. Youko and Inuyasha both chuckled and she turned to glare, red faced at them. Inuyasha tapped his ear, “Demonic ears” he reminded her, “You could say it in your room and we’d still here it”. She groaned, cradling her brow in her palm. “I can’t win” she muttered. Sesshoumaru leaned back in his seat, “No, you can’t” he agreed. Youko took some small measure of pity on her, “Demon custom” he began and Lilian turned her attention to him, “Is vastly different from human tradition. As the Mekharat you move in both spheres and so must know both”. She nodded her understanding. “There are many formal occasions of the Alliance, which you will be expected to attend” he went on, “There are guidelines for female behavior”. She frowned, “Female behavior?” she asked, her tone testy. Youko ignored it, warming to his subject, and secretly delighting in it. “Yes. Females who are not bound to any males are usually closeted away unless intended”. Lilian put her palms on the table and rose to her feet, ‘Closeted? Intended?”, her voice was an angry shiver, “That sounds so …so….so sexist”. Kagome nodded, “Oh it’s all very archaic. They are like cavemen” she added. All males glared at her to which she seemed unaffected. Inuyasha gaped, “Kagaome!” he blustered. She winked at him and patted his arm. Youko met Lilian’s stare head on, “It may seem that way, especially to you. However I assure you that it is for the best. Demons are very territorial…of everything. If another male were to make any overtures towards a female who belonged to another, battle might ensue”. She blinked, “What kind of overtures?” she wanted to know. Inuyasha answered her, “If another male were to look at or speak to Kagome without my permission, I would have every right to kill him”. She gaped, “That’s…..barbaric”. Sesshoumaru grunted, “Youkai are not human, we do not react to various stimuli as humans would. It would be like placing a lamb in a lion’s cage and expecting it to not get eaten. Some things are not done” he stressed. Lilian sighed, “I don’t get any of this, but fine whatever. What does it have to do with me?” Sesshoumaru leaned back in his seat once more. “You must not look at or speak to any males outside of this room without permission” he told her. She sputtered, “What the hell is that? I am not attached to anyone so to speak”. Kagome lifted her finger, “But you are Lilian” she said in a calm voice, “You are bound to Sesshoumaru and Youko, the champions”. Sesshoumaru suddenly didn’t like the direction of this conversation. Still, if things were out in the open…. Lilian shrugged, “Yeah, they train me, but what does that mean?”. Kagome gave her a sympathetic look, “Lilian, because you are bound to them….well……..you belong to them”. Silence reigned for a few golden moments. Moments in which Kagome would reflect and wish she hadn’t said anything at all. Inuyasha clamped his ears down, anticipating the shrieks that would follow. But it wasn’t shrieks that met his ears. It was laughter. Wild, almost maniacal laughter. Lilian seemed to find this new revelation quite amusing and he was beginning to think that she had completely lost it. He was fairly certain that this was the condition which his wife had dubbed “basket case”. Lilian couldn’t believe what she had just been told. These people were too much. Holding out a shaking hand, she lifted teary eyes to Sesshoumaru, “S…so let me get this straight” she said in between snickers, “I belong to you? And you?”. Her finger swung to Youko. The fox regarded her carefully, “More or less, that’s the way it works yes”. She shook her head. Seeming to sober from her mirth, “Oh no” she said then, “I belong to me. Just me. Period. Story over. Excuse me”. She rose on unsteady feet, her strength sapped for today. There was only so much she could deal with, and now, she just wanted to escape. No one stopped her as she made her way to the heavy door and fought one open. She slipped through it, and let the wooden panel close behind her. She bit back a sob that seemed to come from nowhere at all. Pressing her hand to her mouth, she headed down the hall and to the stairs. Sesshoumaru, calm and composed as ever rose to his feet. Inuyasha glowered at him, “I hope you have something in mind to say to her, because when a woman walks out and doesn’t yell, you got a serious problem on your hands”. Kagome took exception to that, “Hey!”. He looked at her and shrugged. Sesshoumaru was already out of the door and Youko’s ear swiveled after him. The Taiyoukai saw her near the stairs, preparing to climb them. His arms lashed out and caught her wrist, holding her fast. She gasped in surprise, turning those wide violet orbs to him, tears clinging to the lashes like gems. He leaned close, so close that she felt his warm breath fan across her cheeks. He smelled of snowy air and pines, and spice, the spice that was male, that was him and she hated herself for noticing it. His golden eyes, like molten ore burned into her, making her feel weak and dizzy. Her scent blossomed in the air around him and he growled softly at it, suppressing the urge to touch. “Wrong Mekharat. You are bound to us and so belong”. She looked back up at him, a sudden ache settling in her chest, “I don’t. No” she told him with quiet firmness. He turned to walk from her, and she felt the chill of the night rush in to replace the heat he now denied her. “Deny it as you wish woman, deny it to the stars above if they will listen, but you will not dare to deny me” Hours later found him in his gardens, perched in the heavy limbs of an old oak. On the air he caught the scent of rain and fox. Youko’s youki was closing on him. He didn’t bother to glance down as the fox paused beneath his tree. “You feel it don’t you?” he asked instead. Youko glared upwards at him, “Same as you Sesshoumaru, you want her. Your beast whispers to you, why won’t you listen?”. Sesshoumaru leapt lightly to the ground, “Because we have a purpose here Youko. She must be trained, she must be awakened, we alone may not be enough to protect her from what is coming. What would you have me do?” his voice was low and cold. Youko met his gaze fully, “I’d have you feel Sesshoumaru” he replied and turned on his heel and stalked away from the dog lord. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
