chapter 8
Inuyasha smirked at the high and mighty priestess standing before him
with spit oozing down her cheek. "I ain't telling you shit."
Fire raged in the depths of her eyes. "That was unwise of you."
=========================
It was four in the afternoon when Kagome, standing at the doorstep,
took in a deep breath. "Okay, Kagome,
whatever happens, happens." She opened the door. All was quiet in the house.
She stopped, listening, but heard nothing.
Avoiding Kikyo again, She went to her room and laid her new
bow and quiver of arrows
on the bed. It was nice of the priestess at the training temple to give
them to her for practice.
After changing into casual clothes, Kagome, again,
readied herself. "Time to face the music."
==============================
Kagome went to the dining room to find Kikyo at the head of the table.
Kikyo greeted her with a smile. "Good evening, Kagome. How was your
first day of training at the temple?"
Trying to hide her nervousness, Kagome sat down at the table.
"I learned much today, cousin. Much about special herbs that help ward off
pest youkai, and we also practiced some archery."
Kikyo gave a nod. "I am glad you are learning. Soon, you will pass level
one. It may take a few years to become a fully trained miko but I am sure
you will do fine."
Kagome smiled at her cousin, silently wondering if she knew about Inuyasha
and what had happened yesterday. Did Kikyo know? And if she did, why wasn't
she saying anything? "The temple priestess gave me a bow to practice with."
"This is good, perhaps I can tutor you on your archery later." Kikyo
offered.
Still a little nervous, Kagome smiled a bit. "Thank you, cousin. I
would greatly appreciate any teaching or advice you will give me."
Nothing else was said throughout dinner except for the occasional
mundane this and that. While eating and chatting with Kikyo, Kagome
thought of Inuyasha. Well, she had been thinking of him all day, wondering
if he was okay...being subjugated and all. And she was the one to do it.
Maybe Kikyo hadn't seen him today. Maybe she was going to check on him
tonight. That meant she still had time to talk to him before Kikyo found
out about the necklace and her blundering stupidity.
========================================
It was seven o'clock, just after dinner, and Kagome was once again walking
in the garden, trying to enjoy the beauty but constantly looking at the
house and the small square vent hole of the basement, knowing Inuyasha
was just behind that hole, and wondering if he was alright and if he
would talk to her again.
Looking around for a moment to see if the coast was clear, Kagome
strolled toward that almost hidden spot until she reached it and knelt down.
For a long time, she listened to make sure Kikyo wasn't in there with him.
Knowing Inuyasha, he would be cussing her out if she was, so Kagome knew
Kikyo wasn't in there.
"...Inuyasha? It's me: Kagome. Are you...are you okay?"
She waited.
"Inuyasha?" She pleaded.
"Yeah?"
Kagome felt a tug in her stomach. It was a feeling close to excitement.
He had spoken to her again.
Then she frowned. Something wasn't right with his voice. "Inuyasha? Are
you okay?"
There was a long silence before he spoke again. "Yeah. I'm okay."
She heard it in his words again: He sounded like someone who was
dying of thirst: dry and cracked.
"Ummm. Did uh...Kikyo see you today?" Kagome asked.
She heard something click and clack together with movement but he
didn't answer her.
Kagome was getting worried again. "Are you thirsty?"
Silence.
"Please, Inuyasha, speak to me."
When all she heard was silence, Kaogme decided to go and see if he
was alright herself.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Knowing that Kikyo was in her study, Kagome snuck down to the basement
door. She felt her insides cringe. The dead bolt was unlatched. So. Kikyo
had been there today.
With a shaky hand, she opened the door.
In the darker room, Kagome blinked for her eyes to adjust as she
stepped around the beads, bones, and teeth on the floor. She gazed into the
slowly deepening darkness. "Inuyasha?" She whispered.
She stopped dead still at the barrier line, finally seeing with adjusted
sight. Just ten feet in front of her was the same boy she had seen
the day before only...
His hair was white!
And he had...ears??? Puppy dog ears??
She would have run over there and touched them but...she suddenly
realized.... "Inuyasha??"
His arms were above his head, beads wrapped around his wrists, hanging him
from a ring of beads attached to the ceiling. His eyes were open but half
closed and he was looking at the floor.
Kagome felt her face heat up horribly for he was bare, no clothes at
all. And his skin....dark patches....??? She paused then stepped over the
line.
She carefully eased closer until she was just inches from him. "Inuyasha?"
He gave no indication of hearing her, just stared, frowning at the floor.
Kagome reached out and he flinched back with a grimace.
Kagome kept her words whisper soft. "What...what did Kikyo do to you?"
The hanyou turned his head to hide his face.
There were deep dark patches all over his skin. They looked like
a mixture of burns and bruises. Had Kikyo done this? And if so? Why?
Then, Kagome suddenly thought of something. "Oh, Inuyasha, I'm so
sorry." She felt her eyes sting and water. "This is all my fault. I
know it is. I, Im so so sorry."
He didn't speak or look at her, still hiding his face.
Kagome, not knowing what to do, slumped to the floor and hid her
face in her hands. She had never caused this kind of pain to anyone, and
now, through her interference, she had hurt this hanyou horribly. He may
be half demon, but he was also half human. She had done this to him. She
had hurt him. "I'm so sorry."
Inuyasha, insides burning while his body raged with pain, tried to
ignore the girl who was crying at his feet. The agony he was feeling would
pass soon for he healed quickly. Only, he never had to heal from a
Miko's attack before and he was finding it was a Hell of a lot harder than
healing from a demon's attack.
He looked at the girl on the floor. She was on her knees with her
face buried in her hands.
In that moment, she looked up.....
....and their gaze locked...
Her eyes...
...her eyes were filled with tears that would not fall...tears
for him.
They were a deep brown...so clear you could fall into them.
Her pink lips parted to a soft whisper. "Inuyasha."
He couldn't think. He couldn't speak. He was trapped by those eyes, those
deep brown eyes.
At that moment, the door opened and Inuyasha shook out of his daze
to see Kikyo walking into the room.
The miko's voice was a dead calm. "Kagome."
Kagome stood, wiping her eyes. "Uh..cousin...I...I..."
Kikyo walked to him and stopped. "Do not shed tears for this hanyou,
Kagome. He is half demon. He is evil that needs to be controlled. If he
cannot be broken, he must be purrified so his soul can go to hell where
it belongs."
Kagome eyes were downcast. "I'm sorry, cousin. Please forgive me. You
told me not to come in here and I did and I..."
Kikyo interrupted. "There is no need for apologies, Kagome. This hanyou
is nothing now but a subjugated half demon." She pointed to the
necklace around his neck and Inuyasha flinched but didn't say anything.
"These beads were spelled to him by someone and I do not know who. Kagome,
did someone visit my home while I was out? Another priestess maybe?"
..................
Kagome stared at her cousin, not believing what she was hearing. Kikyo
didn't think she did it! Kikyo thought someone else did. "I....I didn't
see anyone...I was at the temple all day though." She said, trying to keep
the nervous quiver out of her voice.
Her cousin tapped her bottom lip for a moment. "Hmmmmm... The matter
may need more looking into. I will find out who this Miko is though. It
will just take time."
Kikyo studied Inuyasha and his necklace. Inuyasha kept his eyes averted
away from Kikyo. "I worked with this hanyou today. I think he is ready to
be used." She reached up and touched the beads around his
wrists. They fell apart and dropped
to the floor in a pattering of click clacks.
Inuyasha fell to the floor, his knees hitting hard before his forehead
hit.
"Get up, hanyou!" Kikyo commanded.
Inuyasha slowly rose till he was standing before her again. Kagome
couldn't see his eyes for his bangs.
"I can't do anything more with him, Kagome. He is of no use to me.
I want you to use him in your training."
Kagome's jaw dropped. "Training?"
"Yes, Kagome. I want you to use this hanyou. There are many
projects that training Miko's have to do. I am sure that your teacher
will be glad to give you one involving the use of this hanyou."
Use????
Kagome nodded. "Okay...what..what do I do with him?"
"Whatever you want, cousin. Leave him here for now and use him later if
you wish. Occasionally, I may have him do some things around the house, but
I think he will be of better use to you."
Kikyo left the room and Kagome, stunned, just stood there staring at
the naked hanyou in front of her.
