Chapter 7: A Mother’s Tale
“Inuyasha, Inuyasha,” the voice drifted up from the darkness invading his peace, a dulcet, sweet sounding human voice. He knew it at an instant. “Izayoi,” he thought with a pang of anger. A women with raven colored hair stepped into a garden filled with hydrangeas, azaleas, and plum trees. She sighed as the morning sun warmed her olive toned skin. She let her gray eyes fall to the low shrubs and delicate petals of the plum tree. She rubbed a finger across one of the delicate petals of the plum tree. A calm sense of strength emanated from her very being. Her gold embroidered, light blue kimono ruffled in the wind.“Inuyasha,” she called, “Now, where is my little boy hiding?”She walked slowly passed a purple hydrangea bush. She smiled as she spotted a crimson kimono sleeve poking out from under the hydrangea.“Could he be, here,” she said as she suddenly scooped him out from underneath the delicate flowers.Inuyasha pouted as he looked up at her, “How come you always find me?”“I’m your mother, Inuyasha.” She said with a smile as she ticked his stomach. His laughter was light and airy as he squirmed in her arms.“Okaa-san, tell me the story again,” he said eagerly.Izyoi smiled, “I’ve told you this story so many times, Inuyasha. Are you sure you don’t want to hear a different one?”Inuyasha shook his head and gave her a pleading look.Izyoi sighed, “Alright, I met your father when I was just nineteen and living in the palace in the west. I was not unlike you when I was younger,” she smiled at him, “I was a naturally curious child, always ready for an adventure. I barely ever listened to my parents. When I was forbidden to enter a forest rumored to have demons in it, naturally, I had to enter it. I did not believe the rumors of demons inhabiting the forest. I had walked for quite a while through the dense trees, and my spirit gave way to the tediousness of the place. I had discovered nothing interesting and decided to turn back. It was at this instant, I noticed something.”Inuyasha smiled up at her as he sat up and stared intently at her face. “What did you see?” he asked even though he knew the answer.“I saw a beast with shining greenish eyes and scaly body. His face was so hideous that I froze in terror,” she mimic the face of the demon which made Inuyasha laugh, “He growled at me, and stalked forward. I screamed as he lunged for me. My eyes slid shut instinctively as I cowered. I heard a yelp and a gurgling noise. I opened my eyes slowly, fearing what I would see. I'm sure I looked quite silly as I stared stupefied at the man who saved my life. His silver hair glittered in the sunlight. I must have looked like a bemused child staring up at him, but I was shocked that anything could look that beautiful.”She ran her fingers through Inuyasha's hair. He leaned into her hand, a contented look crossing his face. “His hair looked just like yours, Inuyasha. His eyes were the same color, but they held an intensity and strength that captivated me completely. He had azure markings on either side of his face, and towered over me as I stood in awe. 'Human,' he growled, 'leave this forest.' I grabbed onto the sleeve of his white kimono, begging to stay with him, but he only growled that I had no place beside him, and took me out of the forest. I was far too stubborn to let his taunts deter me. I returned to the forest and every time he dragged me out, I simply walked back in again. Soon my stubbornness won out and he grew to love me.”She kissed Inuyasha's forehead, “He loved you so much Inuyasha. He would be so proud of how much you've grown.”Inuyasha smiled up at her, but his eyes looked saddened. “What does my brother look like?” he asked his voice small.Izyoi smiled at him pityingly. “Sesshoumaru is very beautiful. He looks a lot like you. He has alabaster skin with long silver hair. He has magenta markings on his face and a violet crescent shape on his forehead.”“When am I going to meet him, Okaa-san?”“I don’t know, Inuyasha. Sesshoumaru is very busy taking over for his father. It may be quite some time, but I know he probably wants to see you just as much as you want to see him.”"Really, okaa-san,"he said excitedly,” Then, why don't we go see him? Don't you think he would like us to?"Izayoi rubbed a hand across his cheek, a sad look in her eyes. "Sesshoumaru is very busy. He had to take over for your father. It would be wrong of us to disturb him. I have told you, Inuyasha, not all are as kind as your brother, and they would want to hurt us for being human. It is better that we stay here.""Sesshoumaru will protect us, Okaa-san.""Tut, tut, Inuyasha. Have you grown so tired of me already?""No, Okaa-san," he said quickly a worried look flashing across his features,” I just think that Sesshoumaru might be sad. He's all alone. Don't you think he's lonely?"Izayoi smiled at her thoughtful son, and hugged him closer to her.” You will see him soon, sweeting. For now, I want you all to myself."Sesshoumaru woke with a feeling he couldn’t quite place. He rested his arms on his knees as he let his eyes drift to Inuyasha. While his mind was still occupied on the innocent, happy face of the child in his dream. It was hard for him to believe that the same boy would grow to be the foul mouthed, disgraced bane of his existence. The hanyou groaned then shifted into a more comfortable position. He felt a twinge of pity for the boy as he remembered the look of love that was ever-present on the boy's face as he stared at his mother, and he also felt confused by it. He could not imagine such a look gracing his features as he stared at his mother. He shook his head trying to dislodge those thoughts. He didn't like to dwell on emotions as useless as love. Sesshoumaru let his eyes sink wearily into the bark of the tree Inuyasha rested in. He couldn’t shake the dream, it kept replaying in his mind. He didn’t understand why such a simple dream disturbed him. He had seen much worse, but the dream made him angry and off balance. He clenched his hands into fists as Izyoi’s voice sounded in his head, “not all are as kind as your brother; they would want to hurt us for being human.” He’d hated her, so why did he feel so strange? He felt pity for her lies. He’d never normally allow himself to feel this way. He felt so weak and almost human. It disgusted, and frustrated him. He had not told her to lie in his behalf. He didn’t need such lies, they were empty and frivolous. He never understood his father’s frantic need for weak emotions. Why would such an innocuous emotion hold so much power over him? It was that day; he finally understood how fickle and unreliable love was. That day taught him to despise the poison of love.
Sesshoumaru looked up as the shoji was roughly jerked aside. His mother burst into the room. Her hands were clenched into fists, her body rigid. Her eyes held an emotion he couldn’t quite identify.
“You think walking away from me is really going to stop this from happening.” His father’s voice sounded from the hall before the shoji opened. She turned to stare at him, a growl on her lips.” I will not acknowledge your idiocy.” Inutaishu laughed. Sesshoumaru felt his heart grow cold at the sound. It was a mocking, eerie laugh he was unused to hearing from his father. “If I no longer find our union useful, I can end it.”Ariadne fisted her fingers in Sesshoumaru’s hair and wrenched him to his feet. She bared his neck to Inutaisho. “Will you end him, as well?” Inutaisho stared at him in disgust. “Would it be such a waste? I barely recognize him as my own. Why should I pity something that makes no use out of its existence?”“Do so, then,” she cried jerking his head back further. Sesshoumaru grimaced in pain. “Believe me when I say that human whore will gain nothing whilst your heir still lives.” “You may hide behind him if you wish.” He said,” I hold the decision as to who will be my heir. If you think he can survive without my protection than, by all means, stay here. Perhaps he will be strong enough to outlast my enemies, but will he be strong enough to best me. I am going to strip him of his title of prince. He will be like every other court official fighting for his place in the pack. I will allow no one to aid him. Do you think him capable, Ariadne?”Ariadne stared at him in surprise.” You have to ask such a question. He is my son, and he will surpass you.”
