Sesshomaru landed on a high cliff above the castle. He sat briefly, to contemplate the clouds but he was restless. He paced slowly back and forth along the edge of the cliff. How was he going to be in her company and not do something about it? He knew he wasn't the only one that sensed her heat, but he knew that they wouldn't dare. As long as she stayed with him or in the castle, she was safe, he knew that.
He had to admit to himself that, while the other demons sensed her, he was the only one so bothered by it. As his feet propelled him from one end of the cliff to the other, he realized that he would be doing himself no good if he lied to himself now.
Well, duh. Inner-InuYasha was back. I've been telling you that for a while.
Why are you back?
Because you obviously need my superior advice. His inner voice snorted.
Sesshomaru didn't answer. He wasn't even sure what question to ask. Why are you so afraid of her? InuYasha's voice asked.
He stopped dead and stared, unseeingly into the clouds. I am not afraid of her! She is a human! A mere slip of a girl!
The voice cackled in his head. Then why are you running?
I am not running! I do not run! Sesshomaru growled low in his throat.
Then why are you here instead of down at your castle right now taking Rin to mate? The voice taunted him.
"SHE IS HUMAN!" Sesshomaru shouted out loud to the mountain. His eyes bled red and he paced faster.
Bull shit, it answered him. Are you really still holding on to that?
Yes! Why wouldn't I? Nothing good could come of mating with her. She is human, the children would be hanyou then she would die.
Would she? It spoke quietly this time.
This thought stopped Sesshomaru. Of course she would. She's human, they all die.
So do we. His brother said. Eventually, even we die.
But we live centuries. Millennia. They die in a few years. He wouldn't have recognized the despair in his voice.
Maybe they don't. Do you know any humans mated to demons?
Sesshomaru began pacing again, his eyes back to normal. Only you. But it still doesn't change the fact that they would be hanyou.
The only response to that was a snort. He sat on the top of the mountain for a long while after that, simply contemplating the clouds. A thought began forming and before he realized what he was doing, he was in the air once again.

He watched the play of light and shadows in the window of the hut. He hoped he was far enough away that they couldn't smell him. He did not want to alert him.
It had seemed like a good idea at the time. He would simply ask. She was the only human he knew that was mated to a demon, even if the demon was only half. If there was any truth to the old stories, she would be proof.
Now, as he stared at the hut, he wondered if he really could ask his brother something like this. He never showed weakness. He never showed feeling. The only one he ever showed feeling toward was Rin and that had only happened a few hours ago.
So lost in thought was he, that the voice behind him startled him. "Have you finally decided to try to kill me in my sleep?" The sarcastic question put Sesshomaru's teeth on edge and almost had him flying away without an answer.
He took another few seconds before he answered. "No. I will say this only once. I do not wish to kill you."
InuYasha's mouth fell open and he stared at his brother. Belatedly, he closed it. "Then what do you want?" His question was quietly spoken, with no hint of mockery for once.
"Your…" he paused. "mate." He cleared his throat. "Kagome. She's human."
InuYasha nodded. "Yes. She is."
"Will she…die, like normal humans do?" He closed his eyes. He didn't want to see the derision on his brother's face.
"No." The answer was almost gentle. Sesshomaru opened his eyes and looked at InuYasha, really looked at him, for the first time in a long time.
"How..?" He let a hint of confusion cross his face.
"When we mated the first time, there was a blood exchange. I bit her, she bit me. She gets to live as long as I do. She also has a better sense of smell." He made a face. "That's not always a good thing. I find myself taking a lot more baths now."
The corner of Sesshomaru's mouth tilted up just slightly.
"We can also sense each other more. Like, when I go out to fight and come home, she knows it. She can sense when I'm in danger." He cringed. "I have to be SO careful when I get into fights. If I get too beat up, she tears into me so badly, my ears flatten completely." He laughed.
Sesshomaru stared at his brother another minute. He took a deep breath and tried not to cringe. "Thank you."
InuYasha just nodded once.
Sesshomaru took to the air, still more to think about. But as he flew closer to home, he made his decision.

He landed softly on the balcony outside her room. It was dark inside, but he knew she was there. He paused a moment, to let himself take in her scent again. Silently, he slid the door aside and stepped into the room.
It was dark, but his demon eyes could easily find her form curled up on the bed. She was on her side, curled into a ball like she had when she was little. He sniffed slightly and the scent of salt water came to his nose. She'd been crying.
He realized that the way he'd left her earlier could have been handled better. His only excuse was that he was as surprised as she by the events in the dojo. He traced his eyes over her curves, watching the rising and falling of her shoulders as she breathed. Her hair had fallen partially over her face and fanned out on her pillow.
She hadn't bothered to cover up and he wondered how long she'd been there. It was late, but she was still wearing her fighting clothes. He was uncomfortable with the answers he came up with.
He approached the bed and stood over her, taking in her scent and appearance another minute. He sat down on the edge of the bed and brushed the hair out of her face. Her forehead was crinkled as it did sometimes when she'd been young during her nightmares. He remembered often smoothing it out in sleep.
He did that now, touching it just slightly and watched with a bit of awe as it evened out just as if the years hadn't passed. He ran the back of his fingers down her cheek, then pulled his hand away. He took another breath and touched her shoulder, shaking it a little. "Rin."
Her eyes opened almost immediately. "Oh, Sesshomaru. I thought I was already dreaming, this is a nice dream. I've never dreamed of you here before." She smiled up at him and reached up her hand to touch his face.
He was taken aback. She dreamed of him? Why? His eyes traced her face, took in her smile. "Rin." He said again. "This is not a dream."
He saw the exact moment when she realized that it was real. Her eyes widened and she slapped her hand across her mouth. "I'm so sorry, my lord!" She blushed bright red and looked down to hide her eyes.
"Do not apologize. I woke you up in the middle of the night." He stood up and walked across the room to give her a minute.
"My lord? Was there something you wanted?" Her voice was still contrite, but growing strength.
He didn't say anything at first. He contemplated the small writing desk where she had placed the combs he'd given her. Her flowers were wilting on the other table. He would have to remedy that.
He turned to her and said quietly. "Do you want to be my mate, Rin?"
He saw her shocked face. Her mouth dropped open, her eyes widened again and she couldn't seem to speak. He didn't push her. She was obviously not expecting it.
She closed her mouth and her forehead puckered in confusion. "Why?" She smacked her face again and shook her head. "I mean, of course I do, but why now? And I thought you didn't want hanyou…?"
He looked at her another moment. "There are ways of avoiding pregnancy. And I have noticed that you are…in heat as we demons say. The other demons in the castle sense it and so would others if we were to leave during this time." He watched her face as he spoke and the sadness in it confused him. More emotions played across her face, many of which he could not name until she stopped on one he did.
"No." She said.

It was her turn to watch him stare in shock. It didn't take long for her to make this decision. She loved him so much and wanted nothing more than to be with him forever. But she'd learned a lot of things in her short life.
She wanted a family. She wanted children. And as much as she loved Sesshomaru, she would not be taken to mate to be left barren her entire life. She would rather not be mated at all and simply be part of his company. Or, as much as it would pain her, she could leave altogether and find another life. There was bound to be a human man somewhere out there with whom she could be happy.
She also wanted to be loved. She'd worked hard over the last several years. She'd put a lot of energy and herself into improving herself. And as she'd worked through all of that, she realized she was worth more than that.
"No?" He stared at her for a few more seconds before he turned toward the door.
"Don't leave yet. Let me explain." Her quiet words stopped his movement. "I have read enough and learned enough to know what the nobility is like. I know that it's not much different for demons than humans. What you're asking me to be is little more than one of your concubines." She looked down at her hands, holding them firmly together.
"I do not keep concubines." His voice was so quiet, she wasn't sure she heard him correctly.
"Be that as it may, I would rather follow you around the world and stay separate from you than to mate and only be given a small portion." She took a deep breath. "I want love and children. My answer is no."
She sat perfectly still, waiting to hear what he would have to say. When he didn't speak she looked up at him. "If you would prefer I leave…I will." The thought made her want to curl into a little ball and die. She didn't even notice the tears start to fall.
"I…do not want that." He stood there, another moment, then moved to the door. "We'll talk again in the morning." And with that, he was gone.
