Understandings

Sesshomaru entered the Lord's chamber unannounced. Each demon bristled at the sight of the other. Gamamaru was still a bit woozy from the poison but he stood from his futon, "Where is Jaken? I must see him!"

"Jaken is safe. This Sesshomaru would like to know what you have done to Jaken," He used his coldest and most bitter voice. He had never sounded so angry, even when dealing with his annoying half brother when he still hated the whelp there was never this venom in his voice.

Gamamaru retorted in harsh heated tones, "What goes on between and Alpha and his mate is none of your concern."

"This one did not see a mark of mating upon Jaken's flesh. He is not mated to anyone,": Sesshomaru could not help but add yet in his mind, and it bothered him. He knew somehow that his vassal would end up leaving him one day. With an abusive male? He could not allow it. He may have been hard on the kappa but the thought of him being raped, assaulted, man handled was overwhelming.

Sesshomaru in no way desired his servant in a physical sense, but he had grown accustomed to Jaken's grating voice. His almost mindless devotion. His funny quirks, and haughty attitude. It was amusing how superior the little creature would act toward others, but toward him Jaken held an adoration bordering on worship.

"I could not complete mating," Gamamaru seemed to calm a bit. Concern flashed his eyes, "It is dangerous for many reasons to begin mating right before the dominant partner must leave. The first few months are crucial to creating a bond. If I had claimed Jaken back in the swamp he would have had to stay behind."

"This one is aware of the dangers of a pregnant kappa being away from home."

"It is not just that, frogs, and toad demons do not have a traditional concept of life mates. When a mate is vulnerable and the bond is new another male or even a dominant female can break the bond. They do this by forcing another mating ritual and raping the submissive. I truly never intended to force Jaken," Gamamaru's tone was anguished.

Sesshomaru held a red silk ribbon, "Then explain this." He tossed the collar and leash to the floor at Gamamaru's feet.

The toad reached for it, "This is because the kappa tried to run from our company but I feared he might run into trouble. The plain fact is I was so surprised he had made it all the way through my lands without being forced into submission by some other dominant. "I was worried over his safety. If he were to run while still in my territories he might have been captured and either sold as a slave to the highest bidder or raped and claimed."

"Just as you were about to when this one interfered," Sesshomaru added.

Gamamaru had the decency to look ashamed, "Hai, it is unfortunate that our inner demons take over. It was all I could do to not kill him in a demonic rage. My demon saw Jaken begging you for rescue as disobedience and felt he needed to be corrected."

"Rape is a common punishment?"

"I had not planned that. It was your presence that spurred that on, no offence meant Lord Sesshomaru, but another dominant so close; even if you may not want Jaken the way I do you were a threat to our bond. The leash was also meant to act as a temporary mark to show you and any else whom might be a threat that Jaken was bound to me."

"Hm," Sesshomaru let out a deep hum. He needed to know more about the situation. It seems that he had made a grave error in more then one thing. He was not counting Gamamaru as innocent. Not by a long shot. Jaken was the true injured party in this and Sesshomaru would wait for him to wake up, "This Sesshomaru must have Jaken's story before a decision is made. In the end. Jaken is free to make his choices. He is bound to this one because he chose to follow. Perhaps your bond is still safe. If this Sesshomaru senses even the slighted thing underhanded about your words or actions One will behead you without prejudice. Let war come if your people are unhappy. I will not have those under my care to suffer an abuser's presence."

He turned and left before Gamamaru had even the chance to process what he had said...

"Jaken did not wake that night. The Summit of Demon Lords was to start in a few short hours and Sesshomaru had been in to check on his servant's condition but once the previous night. When Rin awoke and found her lord she once again asked about Master Jaken.

"Jaken is home Rin," Sesshomaru spoke carefully.

"Yeah! Where is he Sire! I want to give him my gift!" Rin produced a wilted flower wreath. She grinned widely closing her eyes from the sheer bigness of her smile.

Sesshomaru placed a hand on her head gently, "Calm yourself Rin, Jaken is exhausted from his journey let him rest for now and later I will take you to see him." Sesshomaru felt a pang of guilt in his chest he had never mislead Rin before, but this morning he was certain that his retainer would not be in the mood to deal with Rin. Later the happy child could torment him with her gifts of flowers, happy chatter, and affection; for now Sesshomaru would allow Jaken his peace.

"Rin, today This Sesshomaru has an important meeting after Rin and this One take our morning meal. This one would like you to stay in your rooms because there will be a number of strange demons here today. Stay with your guard, and One will fetch you when it is over."

"Yes, Lord Sesshomaru!" Rin bowed in respect.

"Come Rin," Sesshomaru turned away, "It is time to eat." Sesshomaru lead the girl to the informal dining room to take her morning meal.
