Chapter 8

Kagome could hear voices, but she couldn’t make out what they were saying. She slowly drifted into consciousness and wished she hadn’t. Her whole body hurt like hell, she felt like she had been run over by a semi numerous times. She moaned in pain and started to open her eyes. What had happened? She looked around confused for a moment and then it all came rushing back. She had been attacked by Kouga, Sesshomaru had saved her and brought her home. She must be in his room. She looked around confused for a minute before she heard the kind elderly voice break through her thoughts.

“Ah, so ye are awake child.”

An elderly woman stepped into her field of vision. Kagome looked at her for a moment and then looked over her shoulder at Sesshomaru with a questioning look.

“Kagome, this is Kaeda, she is an old family friend. She came over to check over your wounds,” he said calmly sensing her unease.

“Ye are very lucky child. Just bruises and scrapes mostly, but you will be sore for a few days. When you get up you might want to soak in a hot bath, it will help with some of the stiffness and pain. I have left some herbs for you with Sesshomaru to help with pain and swelling.”

It took her a moment to process all of this information but when she did she gave the woman a weak smile, “thank you,” she said her voice hoarse from screaming.

The woman just smiled at her and turned to leave the room. “Well, Sesshomaru I will take my leave now. If you have any questions just call, oh and Inuyasha should be here any minute with the little ones.”

He nodded, “thank you for all of your help I really appreciate it.”

After Kaeda left Sesshomaru made his way to the bed with the mug of tea. “Here it will help with the pain.”

Kagome smiled and tried to sit up, all she managed to do was cry out and fall back to the bed though. Pain licked at her every nerve ending. Sesshomaru was by her side in a flash. He put the mug down on the night stand and started to help her sit up. He gently lifted her and propped pillows behind her so she was sitting up. He handed her the tea which she took with shaking hands.

“Thank you. I guess I should really get to my room, I don’t want the kids to see me like this,” she said looking up at him as she took a sip of the tea.

“That will not be necessary. You will stay in here so I can help you. Kaeda left you in my charge.”

“Oh, I couldn’t take your room. I’ll be fine really,” she said shifting slightly and immediately hissing in pain.

“Hn. I can tell,” he said with a smirk, “Just let me take care of you.”

She opened her mouth to protest but quickly shut it figuring it was pointless. She took another sip of the tea just as she heard a car pull up outside.

“That would be Inuyasha and the children. Finish your tea while I go talk to him,” he said getting up.

“The children, they can’t see me like this!” Kagome said feeling panic rise in her.

“Don’t worry, I will have a talk with them,” he said as he went out the door closing it behind him.

Inuyasha walked in with the children. He had one in each arm and they were almost completely asleep. Sesshomaru was with him in a few seconds.

“Damn, wish I was that fast,” Inuyasha mumbled kicking the door closed.

Sesshomaru smirked and took Rin from him, “Let’s put the children to bed and then we will talk in my study.”

Inuyasha followed him up the stairs and went to Shippo’s room to get him settled. After he had him tucked in he made his way to Sesshomaru’s study anxious to get answers on what was going on. Sesshomaru was already waiting and had a beer out for each of them. Inuyasha took his beer and went to sit down in one of the chairs by the fireplace.

“Alright, so tell me what is going on? What the hell happened? Where’s Kagome?” he asked as his brother took the seat facing him.

“That mangy wolf attacked her. He must have been waiting out by the parking lot for her to come out.”

“What? Oh shit, what did he do?”

Sesshomaru told him what had happened and Inuyasha sat there in shock. Kouga had really gone off the deep end. Then he started to feel guilty. He should have kept an eye on Kouga. He thought he left and he should have known better, especially after what Kouga had pulled last night. He should have stuck with him to make sure he didn’t try anything.

“It wasn’t your fault Inuyasha, you thought he left,” Sesshomaru said looking toward the fireplace.

“I should have made sure he left, or went with him. Especially after what you told me he did. I just never thought he would go that far. I figured he was just pissed his plan to get you to kick her out didn’t work.”

“You figured out what he had planned too, did you? I’m impressed.”

“Come on, I’m not a complete idiot.”

“I know little brother. I never did give you enough credit.”

Inuyasha was shocked for a moment, but quickly shook it away, “So what happened to Kouga?”

“I poisoned him. He will suffer and die slowly, unless he somehow manages to survive the poison.”

Inuyasha nodded and looked away. He would keep tabs on Kouga just in case he survived. That way they could make sure there would be no more trouble, “I’ll call the detective tomorrow and have him start keeping an eye on Kouga. That way if he does survive we will know.”

“That is an excellent idea little brother. By the way you will be in charge at the office for a few days, I will be staying here to help Kagome.”

“How bad did he hurt her?”

“Luckily she had no broken bones, but she was bruised pretty bad over quite a bit of her body. She is hurting pretty bad and can barely move. Kaeda gave her some tea to help with the pain. We have to figure out something to tell the children.”

“The bruises are bad enough she can’t cover them up?”

“I do not know if she could, but there’s still swelling on part of her face and both her wrists. I thought her wrists were broken when I first looked her over. Then there is also the fact that she is hurting too bad to be able to hide it.”

“Well, maybe the tea will be enough to cover that and we can just tell the kids she’s a little sick,” Inuyasha suggested.

“That might work, but if they jump on her or cling to her like they usually do they could hurt her.”

“We’ll just tell them that she has body aches from being sick and not to do anything like that.”

“You know that the children cannot restrain themselves sometimes.”

“Yeah, but you said you would be here to help her out,” Inuyasha replied.

“Yes I did, I suppose that will work then. I will talk with Kagome and see what she thinks.”

“I am a little surprised that you are taking care of her yourself. Usually you would just hire somebody.”

“Little brother I know you have already figured out that I have feelings for Kagome. So you can drop the act.”

“And here I thought you thought I was a complete idiot.”

“You may act like an idiot at times little brother but I know you are perceptive. Now why don’t we go talk to Kagome about your idea.”

Inuyasha smiled and they both stood. He followed Sesshomaru upstairs and was only mildly surprised when Sesshomaru went to his room instead of Kagome’s. They walked in and Inuyasha couldn’t stop the gasp at the sight of Kagome. He instantly felt anger build up inside him. It was a good thing Sesshomaru had taken care of Kouga because if he hadn’t Inuyasha would hunt him down right now and tear him limb from limb. Kagome looked up and the second she saw him she looked down in shame. Inuyasha felt a pang in his heart that he had made her feel ashamed. He hadn’t meant to stare, he was just upset at what Kouga had done. He walked over to the bed and gently hugged her.

“I’m sorry Kagome, I should have kept an eye on Kouga. I didn’t think he would go this far,” he said trying to comfort her.

“It’s not your fault. I should have found a guard to escort me out to my car. I assumed he was gone just like you did,” she said smiling weakly at him. “What happened to kouga anyway?”

Inuyasha and Sesshomaru both noticed her shiver at the mention of the wolf.

“He shouldn’t bother you anymore. Inuyasha is going to call a detective tomorrow to keep an eye on him,” Sesshomaru replied kneeling down to gently take her hand in his. “Inuyasha has an idea on what we can tell the kids.”

She raised her eyebrows and looked at Inuyasha, “Oh?”

Inuyasha explained his idea about her covering the bruises and telling the kids she was sick.

“That sounds like a good plan, it should work. I’m sure I can figure out how to cover the bruises,” she said frowning.

“Well you have a while to figure it out since you won’t see the kids until about 3 tomorrow,” Inuyasha said giving her a smile, “Well I’m going to head to bed. Good night you two.”

After Inuyasha left Sesshomaru turned to Kagome, “How are you feeling?”

“I still hurt but it’s a little better,” she said yawning.

Sesshomaru smiled at her, “Why don’t you go ahead and get some rest. You must be tired. Do you want me to call Miroku and tell him what happened and that you can’t come to work for a while?”

“If you would I would appreciate it,” she replied as he helped her to lay back down and rearranged the pillows.

He noticed her wince as she lay down but relaxed after a minute. Almost as soon as she relaxed her breathing evened out and she fell asleep. Sesshomaru stood there watching her for a while, she looked so peaceful. Finally he decided that it was time to call Miroku, even though he was reluctant to leave her side. He stepped out of the bedroom and quietly closed the door. He walked back down to his study grabbing another beer on the way. He took a swig of the beer and then picked up the phone to call Miroku at the club. After a few rings Miroku picked up.

“Hello?”

“Miroku, it’s Sesshomaru.”

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Well I was calling for Kagome, she will be unable to come to work for a while.”

“Is she ok?”

Sesshomaru could hear the worry in his voice and took another drink of his beer before telling him what happened. Miroku was silent the whole time Sesshomaru explained and when he was finished he would have thought that he hung up except for the background noise from the club.

“Miroku?”

“Sorry, I’m still here. I’m just shocked and upset. Kagome is a friend of mine I can’t believe this happened. I’m going to have to have a talk with the guards I hired to escort her to her car,” Sesshomaru could hear the guilt and pain in Miroku’s voice.

They were both silent for a while thinking of the events of the night. Both feeling pain and sadness over what had happened.

“Miroku, I have been thinking about offering her a job at Taisho Incorporated. I know she is your best dancer, but she deserves more than that.”

“I think that is a good idea. You’re right, she does deserve more. She’s such a sweet and kind person.”

“So you would not be mad to lose your best dancer?”

“No, I would be happy for her. I have always felt bad that she had to do this, but I couldn’t help her any other way. She is a friend first and an employee second and I always thought she deserved more than life has given her. She deserves to be happy. In fact, if you did give her a job I would appreciate it. I know she never did like having to do this.”

“You’re right she does deserve more. You’re a good friend Miroku, most people in your position would be upset to lose their best dancer.”

“She’s like a sister and Sango loves her like a sister too. Sango will be ecstatic to hear that Kagome finally has a better job.”

“Well, don’t say anything yet. I still have to talk to her about it. I don’t think she would be willing to work for me if she thought I was just doing it because I felt sorry for her.”

“Well, isn’t that why you are doing it?”

“No. I actually was thinking about it before I found out she was a dancer there. She is very intelligent. She found an accounting error in my files by just glancing at them. She figured out that one of my employees is embezzling after just a minute of looking at the files.”

“Really? Wow, I always knew she was intelligent but that is amazing. Maybe I can have her look at my records, I’ve been having problems figuring some things out. Anyway, can I ask you a question?”

“You just did, but yes,” Sesshomaru said smirking.

“Do you have a thing for Kagome?”

“That obvious?”

“Oh yeah.”

“I should have guessed everyone has figured it out. Yes, I do care about her, in fact, I think I love her.”

“Well, good for you. You couldn’t find a better person than her. FYI she likes you too.”

“How do you know that?”

“I heard her talking to Sango. Take care of her Sess, if you don’t you will have to deal with not only me, but Sango as well.”

Sesshomaru couldn’t help but smile, “I would never hurt her so you don’t have to worry.”

“Ok. I’ll tell Sango what happened, so you can probably expect her over there tomorrow.”

“Ok. Talk to you later Miroku.”

“Bye.”

Sesshomaru hung up the phone and finished his beer. He thought he might end up arguing with Miroku. He thought Miroku would be mad at the thought of losing his best dancer but he was actually happy at the thought. Kagome really had some good friends, they were willing to lose money just for her to be happy. They even went so far as to threaten him if he hurt her. Most would consider that insane for them to threaten him when he could kill them with a flick of his wrist, but he thought it was endearing. It was good that Kagome had such good friends.

His thoughts were cut off when he heard Kagome whimper upstairs. In a flash he was by her side talking soothingly to her. She was still asleep but she calmed when he talked to her. He got up and got one of the chairs from the desk in the room to put by the bed. He quickly grabbed a pair of white pajama bottoms and went to the bathroom to change. When he was done he settled down in the chair to watch over her. He knew she would probably have nightmares after what happened and he wasn’t about to leave her side. He turned one of the lamps on to dim and sat watching her. Eventually, he fell asleep, dreaming of the girl in his bed.

Kagome woke up to the cool feel of silk sheets against her skin. She was momentarily disoriented, where was she? It all came back to her after a minute and she looked around. There was a dim light on, she was in a huge room with a fireplace and some chairs around it. There were old paintings on the walls of the feudal era and a magnificent dog demon. There was a bookcase and a desk against the far wall. She turned her head to look at the nightstand, the clock said it was three o’ clock in the morning. Then she saw Sesshomaru, he was asleep in a chair by the bed.

She was mesmerized for a moment. All he was wearing was a pair of pajama bottoms showing off his perfectly sculpted chest and abdomen. She blushed a little and looked up at his face. He looked to peaceful, in sleep his mask was gone and his features softened. He looked so beautiful, his markings standing out against his milky skin. She looked at him for a moment longer and then slowly reached out to him. She put her hand on his knee and gently shook it. He was immediately awake and alert.

“Are you ok?” he asked sitting up a bit.

“I’m ok. You just didn’t look very comfortable sleeping in that chair.”

“I’m fine, go ahead and go back to sleep,” he said taking her hand in his.

Kagome blushed for a second before she decided just to ask him what she was thinking.

“Why don’t you sleep in the bed with me,” she looked down, “I mean it’s definitely big enough for both of us and you would be more comfortable.”

Sesshomaru froze for a second. Was she actually saying she wouldn’t mind sharing the bed with him?

“Are you sure that you would be comfortable with that?” he asked feeling a little uneasy.

“Yeah, I trust you,” she said looking up at him and biting her lower lip.

She was a little nervous, but she did trust him. After what seemed like an eternity Sesshomaru nodded and got up. Kagome let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. Sesshomaru walked around to the other side of the bed and Kagome couldn’t help but admire the grace with which he moved. He pulled the covers back and climbed into the bed, he had to admit that it had been uncomfortable sleeping in that chair and it felt good to lay in his bed. He didn’t want to spook her so he stayed toward his side of the bed. He could smell her sweet scent all over the bed and tried to relax.

Kagome lay there for a moment thinking. When she felt him relax she decided that she slowly moved toward him and put her head on his chest, hoping she wasn’t being to forward. She didn’t want to make him mad. When she felt him tense she started to move, but he put his arm around her and gently pulled her back. She relaxed against him and put her arm over his stomach. She didn’t know why, but she felt so safe in his arms. Slowly his other arm came around and wrapped around her. She sighed and cuddled into his chest. Within minutes she could feel herself drifting off to sleep again. Feeling content and happy she drifted off.

Sesshomaru had been surprised when she had cuddled up to him and felt himself tense. When he felt her start to move he had put his arm around her to pull her back. He wanted her back, it had surprised him, but he had felt so content at the same time. After she relaxed and lay her head back down on his chest he couldn’t help but take a deep breath of her scent, it was so calming. He gently wrapped his other arm around her after feeling her arm rest across his midsection. He felt like he could lay like that forever, she felt so right in his arms. He nuzzled her hair and felt himself begin to drift, feeling a warmth in his chest that he had never experienced before. A smile crept upon his lips as he let sleep take him once again, cuddled up against the small woman that had managed to capture his heart.
