Five Years Later

Kagome looked out the window to make sure InuYasha wasn’t near. It was the Twins’ fifth birthday, and he had taken them for a camping trip so she would have time to prepare, and she didn’t want the surprise to be ruined. Sesshomaru and Rin, now a beautiful teenager, had arrived last night shortly after Kagome’s husband and children left. They were hanging up the balloons and streamers Kagome had brought back from her mother’s house. Rin was fascinated by the tissue-paper streamers and ran with them, laughing, to watch them fly behind her.
“Mama! Mama!” she heard the twins call. She glanced at Sesshomaru and Rin, who hid. Kagome had just enough time to sit on the armchair she had made InuYasha bring for her before they burst through the door. Yohmei ran in first. He was mostly human. His black hair was cut just below his ears, which looked human. The only parts of him where his youkai blood showed were his eyes, so like InuYasha’s, and his claws. He was faster than the average boy, stronger too. But other than that, he was an ordinary boy with his father’s temper. Luckily he had enough of Kagome in him to keep it in check. His sister, Sesshomaru’s daughter, Maiko, ran in after him. It was obvious that she had held back so that her slightly younger brother won the race. Her silver hair sparkled in the sunlight. She looked exactly like her father, with one exception: her face had no markings. She had Kagome’s cheery disposition. She saw the streamers and balloons and her face lit up.
“Mama! Oh Mama, you didn’t!” she said.
“Didn’t what?”
“This is for out birthday, isn’t it? You decorated for our birthday!” Yohmei cried gleefully.
“I didn’t decorate,” Kagome said, pretending not to see the streamers and balloons. “And your birthday isn’t for another month.”
“Mama,” Maiko said mock-sternly. “You know it’s our birthday today. Stop being foolish.” She sounded almost exactly like her father when she said it and Kagome could no longer keep a straight face.
“Oh, ok. Sesshomaru and Rin are here for our little party, too, and Miroku, Sango, and Shippo should be here any minute.”
“Father!” the twins shouted. They both called Sesshomaru Father, and InuYasha Papa. Rin was glad to have two siblings, and she ran out of her hiding place to hug them both. Sesshomaru came out behind the girl. He loved both children as if they were his own and had a gift for each of them.
“Sesshomaru,” Kagome said warily. “Don’t you think five is a little too young to give them swords?”
“Nonsense. I’m sure their Papa will teach them how to use them properly. And I used their first shed baby teeth to forge them, so they will grow with the children.”
“Mama, you told us the Tooth Fairy took them,” Yohmei said accusingly.
“Yes, but your Father made a deal with the Tooth Fairy because a youkai-blooded child’s first tooth is very powerful to him,” InuYasha explained.
“Or her?”
“Or her. Now, after our party here, Mama and I will take you to Grandmama’s house for another party, where there will be cake and ice cream.”
AT that moment, Sango and Miroku walked into the little hut. Their five-year-old son, Haku, walked behind them holding his three-year-old brother Yuki’s hand. Miroku held their one-year-old twin sons, Ryu and Hao. Sango, who was very pregnant, waddled in behind him, smiling.
“Kagome, we came straight here from Kaede’s,” she said. “We’re finally going to have a girl!”
Kagome hugged her friend gingerly. “That’s great! What are you going to name her?”
“Suki,” Miroku answered, putting his hand on his wife’s stomach. Sango pulled two cloth-wrapped parcels out of her bag and handed them to Yohmei and Maiko. They were little wooden dogs that Miroku had carved, each with a child’s name carved in its side. The children squealed with glee. Shippo, who had also grown, came in behind them with a wooden top for each child. He looked over at Rin, and they both blushed and looked away.
“Kohaku is sorry he couldn’t make it,” Sango said. “But he’ll be here, with his gifts, when you get back from your grandmother’s.”
“Koga, too,” Shippo chimed.
The party lasted for three hours. Kagome and InuYasha gave their children new clothes, which made them groan. Then, after the guests had left, everyone cleaned up and headed toward the Well.

“InuYasha, I have something to tell you,” Kagome said after tucking the children, tired out from their big day, into the hide-a-bed in the living room. InuYasha nibbled her neck.
“After,” he said. Kagome complied. He took her kimono off slowly and suckled her nipples. It was the night of the full moon, and was human tonight. He nibbled and heard her moan softly. He removed his own clothes and slid into her. She inhaled sharply and raked her fingernails down his back. He moaned, being careful not to wake the sleeping children downstairs. The two made love. When they finished, they lay down next to each other. Kagome reached over and took InuYasha’s hand.
She whispered in his ear: “I’m pregnant.” InuYasha’s eyes widened.
