Chapter 8
Finaru…or Kikyou’s Last Stand
Watching me, wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you... loving you
I won't let you pull me down
Silhouetted by the setting sun, Kikyou made her stealthy way to the rendezvous between InuYasha and Naraku. Her mind was cool and calculating, and she kept a vise-like grip on her steaming heart. There was no time to dwell on InuYasha’s interference having foiled her plan. Failure was not an option. She darted behind trees and small buildings, her eyes straining against the oncoming darkness. Concentrating on making herself a mere wisp of unnoticed shadow, she approached the Shisei Kaikan from behind. Sliding around a corner, she squinted into the darkness. The sound of voices made her quickly flatten herself to the wall. As she listened, she slowly started to load her shiruken with darts, trying not to lose her patience as her coat sleeve kept getting in her way.
“I know better than to trust you,” InuYasha said. “Before we start negotiations, Oyabun, you and your men throw down your guns where I can see them.”
A shiver went down Kikyou’s spine and she closed her eyes as she heard Naraku chuckle, a dark sound that reminded her of nails grating on sandpaper. She stilled the memories connected with that sound before they could unsettle her concentration. InuYasha was being stupid! Even if Naraku let InuYasha and Kagome leave Japan, his tentacles reached everywhere – he would find them eventually and kill them. Kikyou frowned, thinking that maybe Inuyasha was not really looking for a way out. It could be another ruse…
The sound of soft thuds brought Kikyou’s attention back to the scene being played out before her. She squinted into the twilight, and made out where Naraku stood amongst his kobun. His height and long hair made him distinct even in the murky, dying light. Gripping her wrist with the loaded shiruken with her other hand, she calculated what her next move would be.

On the other side of the Shisei Kaikan, a lithe, shadow slipped with cat-like grace against the wall. Kagura’s heart was racing, as she made out Naraku and his men facing InuYasha and Kagome. Lips slightly parted, her mouth felt dry as her eyes darted about searching in the gloom for Kikyou. That woman must be here somewhere! Carefully, she slid her hand inside her coat and closed it over the handle of her gun. Her nerves were so taut she nearly jumped out of her skin when a hand landed on her shoulder. Eyes wide in fear, she glanced up…into the golden gaze and stern face of Sesshomaru.
“What are you doing here?” Kagura hissed. “I thought you weren’t going to help me! How did you track me anyway?”
“Quiet, woman,” Sesshomaru whispered back. “I owe you no explanations. Just stay back and do as I tell you.”
His words made Kagura bristle inside. But secretly, she was relieved that Sesshomaru was there. Could he really care about her safety after all? She relaxed her hold on her gun, and let him gently push her behind him. He drew his gun, put his back to the wall and squinted, waiting for his chance. Kagura flattened herself on the wall beside him, unable to see the action anymore. She still felt anxious, and her hand twitched for the comfort of her gun. She began to settle down slowly. Taking a long breath, she leaned her head back against the cool stone of the building. She had faith in Sesshomaru…

While InuYasha and Naraku snarled their negotiations back and forth, Kagome stood in InuYasha’s grip with her heart thudding loudly in her chest. InuYasha had a vise-like grip on her arm, and it was hurting her. She was too nervous to complain, and knew that he did not mean to hurt her. At any moment, things could erupt in gunfire. She tried to keep a staunch demeanor, as befitted the steely cool of the woman she was portraying. With all her heart, she believed in InuYasha and his ability to protect her. Next she believed in herself, and her commitment to being her boyfriend’s partner and equal. She swallowed and blinked behind her dark glasses, forcing herself to hear what was going on despite her heart beating loudly in her ears.
“Give me Kikyou first, cur,” Naraku drawled, holding out his hand. “No more negotiations - you return her to her master.”
“Like I believe you will even negotiate after I give her to you, you son-of-a-bitch,” InuYasha retorted. “I know she is more important to you than the damn jewel.”
Kikyou watched and listened, and clenching her jaw, decided it was time to act. Naraku was laughing in that horrid way again, so confident and so…evil. He still held out his hand and she saw his teeth glint in the rays of the setting sun. Poised and ready, Kikyou sprinted from her hiding spot and ran full tilt at him.

The tension in Inuyasha’s body felt like someone was stretching him on one of those medieval torture racks. Beads of sweat formed on his brow under his heavy bangs, and he narrowed his eyes to make out Naraku in the encroaching darkness. Very soon, he would make Naraku feel like he had won…then it would be time for action. Kagome stood silent and still in front of him, but he could smell her fear and stress. Still, he was very proud of her for keeping her composure. He had always tried to shield her from the business he was in and the dangerous business associates he had. Yet she showed only bravery and devotion when he finally decided he needed her help. He was the luckiest man in the world…
Naraku was laughing, his hand held out as he demanded his possession, the supposed Lady Kikyou. Out of the corner of his eye, InuYasha suddenly caught a movement. Pulling Kagome to the side, his eyes opened wide in horror as Kikyou came running out of the darkness towards Naraku. He did not have much time to react…he pushed Kagome to the ground and reached for his hidden gun.

“What is happening?” Kagura hissed at Sesshomaru.
Kagura desperately wanted to look around the tall form of her boyfriend, but he kept pushing her back firmly against the wall. She was torn, chafing to know what was going on, but wanting to cling to Sesshomaru’s protection.
Suddenly, after she heard the macabre laughter of her twisted former Oyabun, Sesshomaru moved. Swiftly he pointed his weapon, crouching down to get an aim. That was when she saw Kikyou charging Naraku…

Kikyou knew she had to react fast. There would only be a matter of seconds before Naraku’s men went for their weapons. She had to use the element of surprise to her full advantage. There were gasps, and Naraku saw her. Swallowing the last of her fear and revulsion, she ran up to him.
“Let them go, it’s me you want!” Kikyou said. “I am the real Kikyou!”
The heat of Naraku’s stare could be felt, if not seen, in the darkness. He dropped his outstretched hand. As she raised her left hand as if to lovingly caress his face, he grabbed it roughly and pulled her hand down painfully. This was distraction enough, as she moved her right wrist up and flicked it, sending a barrage of darts into his chest.
“Kikyou, no!”
Kikyou heard InuYasha’s anguished cry just as the first bullets hit her…

Kagura heard the eruption of gunfire, and then Sesshomaru was firing as well. She pressed her head back against the wall and gulped. This was all insane!
“Now!” Sesshomaru called out.
Agents sprung out from behind trees and bushes and began to take down Naraku’s men. As Naraku collapsed, the limp body of Kikyou came down with him. InuYasha made sure Kagome was flat to the ground, and sprinted over to the fallen woman. Carefully, he disentangled Kikyou from the monster, oblivious to the yells, screams and shouts of the chaos around him.
InuYasha took Kikyou’s blood-soaked body gently in his arms. He cradled her in his lap, and brushed the hair out of her face - her dark eyes shone up at him with an unearthly light. She smiled softly.
“Kikyou…why?” InuYasha said brokenly.
“It was the only way,” Kikyou whispered. “Don’t be sad, InuYasha. Be happy for me. I am finally free...”
With a sigh, Kikyou breathed her last breath. Bowing his head, InuYasha felt a tear run down his cheek. His heart clenched with guilt that he had not been able to save her, his partner and best friend. But in his mind, he knew she was right.
As things quieted down behind him, InuYasha sat and silently mourned. He felt the small, soft and comforting hand of Kagome on his shoulder. Small gasps escaped her as she cried.
“We may mourn her, but in the end, we must respect her,” InuYasha whispered. “She chose this…Kikyou found her way out.”
Kneeling down behind him, Kagome put her arms around InuYasha and bowed her tear-stained face to his shoulder. And that is how Kagura and Sesshomaru found them…
