Never before could he remember running as fast as he did that day. Only one thing was on his mind - fear. The moment Kagome had collapsed had caused such terror inside his breast he thought he might die from it. The knowledge that his mate very well could perish...
He ran faster than the wind. Inuyasha, carrying Rin on his back, struggled to keep up with his half-brother. They'd both jumped up at the sound of Sesshomaru's bellow, and had only moments to collect their thoughts before he'd come barreling out of the cave entrance with an unconscious Kagome cradled in his arms. Eyes wild and hinting at red, the daiyoukai searched - and found - one who could give them answers. The bull-youkai Kames seemed neither startled nor surprised at the turn of events. He gazed impassively at the heaving inu-youkai before him and his frail mate. Before Sesshomaru could demand answers, Kames had shrugged. "Inuyoko," he said, knowing Sesshomaru would understand. He had, and now that's where they were headed at an uncharted speed. The old hag's cavern wasn't far from the cave, for that he was grateful. He could feel nothing from Kagome's side of the kizuna. It was as if someone had lit a fire to the bundle of emotions in his mind that was her - he was almost blinded by its radiance. It didn't make any sense to him - Kagome was calm, therefore the emotions he received from her were calm like water. Now it was as if there was a tsunami of fire sweeping across his brain in excruciating waves of heat. Inuyoko was waiting for them outside her home, an unusual sight had Sesshomaru taken the time to notice. She'd discarded the old hag disguise, letting her true form show. The closer he came, the daiyoukai couldn't help but see the lines around her eyes had become deeper, her eyes dimmer. Coming to a halt, Sesshomaru glared down at the smaller female. Rin, tapping Inuyasha on the shoulder, whispered into his ear, "Lord Sesshomaru looks angry!" The hanyou scoffed softly. "Doesn't he always?" Vehemently Rin shook her head. "Never like this." "Witch!" bit out Sesshomaru in a rumbling growl. "What have you done to this one's mate?!" Disregarding his rage, Inuyoko came closer, examining the limp Kagome. Her arched brows drew together in concern. "This was not foreseen," she murmured softly, "but it was not unexpected. Very few humans have taken such power into their vessels and survived. It seems the strength of this miko's soul has carried her through. Now the true test begins, whether or not this one was truly meant as your mate." Briskly, she clapped her hands. "Bring her inside!" "Explain yourself, witch!" Sesshomaru refused to move. "What do you mean, true test? If you have deceived this one about his partner..." He let the threat hang. "Rest easy, mi'lord," Inuyoko told him. A fierce gust of wind unexpectedly propelled the daiyoukai forward into the home of the witch. "All will be revealed, but first! If we do not help this human, it is unknown how long she will be able to battle the torrent of power on her own." "Hey, what about me!" Inuyasha set Rin down, stomping over to where his half-brother and the beautiful witch stood. An invisible barrier seemed to keep him from entering the cave. His eyebrow twitched in annoyance. "Oh this is horseshit!" "Inuyasha." Sesshomaru glared at the hanyou menacingly. "Watch Rin while this one is busy." "Send her to the palace! I ain't no one's babysitter!" His brother didn't reply, merely faded into the darkness. Rin tugged at his hand, smiling sweetly. "Inuyasha, will you help Rin make flower crowns?" The two sat by a crackling fire, Kagome laid besides it's warmth. Despite the heat from the flames, her skin felt clammy and moist. Clutched tightly in her hands was the prize she'd won for her efforts. A statue no more than six inches tall, carved from a smooth white stone streaked through with yellow, it depicted an inu neither male nor female, age having erased all signs of its possible sex. It was smooth, the features worn away by time. Tiny hands held a jewel of amber to its chest, now dim and cold. Inuyoko knelt beside her prone form, muttering arcane words under her breath. Sesshomaru sat near them, eyes riveted on the hovering Sun Dog. "She is very weak, Sesshomaru," the female inu-youkai said sadly. "It is uncertain if she will make it." "You lied. You told this Sesshomaru that he would find his breeding partner within the cave. It was barren. There was no life." "I did no such thing! I told you what the bones gave me, no more, no less. If you didn't find your partner in the cave, perhaps you weren't looking hard enough." "There was nothing in the cave but moss, decay and a dead end." Inuyoko motioned a hand towards the miko. "And a most precious jewel." Sesshomaru raised an elegant eyebrow. "One cannot produce heirs with pretty baubles." "But one can create strong pups with another inu." The gentle hand resting on Kagome's hand lifted a still eyelid, revealing a vivid blue eye. The pupil, once round as a pearl, was now slitted like a cat's. Sesshomaru's own eyes widened a bit. "You expect this one to mate with her!" A smile split Inuyoko's features. "You asked me to reveal your mate to you, and this is the mate Fate has chosen." "But this one cannot mate with her! She does not understand what it means to truly be mated to a Moon Dog." "The woman's heart isn't without understanding and compassion. Perhaps, Sesshomaru, you should try understanding the woman's heart." "Hn. Ridiculous. Just make sure this one's mate is strong enough to bear full-blooded inus." Rising gracefully to his feet, the daiyoukai stalked from the cave. Watching him go, Inuyoko glared. Lightly placing her hand on Kagome's forehead, she murmured, "If there is to be any hope for the prophecy, your mate must embrace the true strength of his father." As if from far away, Kagome heard the youkai's words, yet she didn't understand them fully. Father's strength? Sesshomaru was already strong. Dimly, she was aware of the heat from the woman's hand on her skin, the cool earth beneath her, smell the smoke of the fire. Groggily, she opened her eyes. Above her hovered a face so lovely she stared. Inuyoko smiled warmly, helping the young woman to sit up slowly. "What, what happened?" Kagome asked, rubbing her head. Sunlight streamed through the slit in the tent flap, stinging her eyes. Her body felt as if she'd been asleep for a very, very long time. "And so you have, my child. Months, in fact." The kindly hand stroked her hair. "You have a visitor in camp. It's someone you've never seen before, never knew before now. They're most eager to meet you, and they will show you a strength you never dreamed of." She gently pushed the young woman out of the tent into the glaring light. She looked around, gasping. Their tent was in the middle of a desert. Nothing grew, the dunes changed shape with the will of the wind. The sun glared down upon her head, wanting to bake her brain. Turning, she was about to ask the youkai who the visitor was, when the spit dried in her mouth. The tent was gone. She was alone in this alien land. Movement from the corner of her eye caught her attention. Spinning swiftly, nearly losing her footing in the shifting sand, the miko saw no one. Unsure as to what to do, Kagome began to wander the desert, searching for help. She didn't now how long she traveled, but the father she went, an impending sense of doom pervaded her mind. Every once in a while she would turn, expecting to see a massive black cloud hanging behind her. There never was, of course, merely her own shadow. "Kagome..." whispered a deep voice she knew instantly. Sesshomaru! Wildly she spun, searching for him. "...Kagome...." Was it the wind who called her? "Sesshomaru!" she screamed. "When will you return, Kagome?" The voice was fading! "When will you come back to me?" "I'm here, Sesshomaru! I'm here!" Tears of frustration stung her eyes. She could feel his sorrow, his loneliness. He'd been abandoned again! Angry, Kagome fell to her knees, punched the stinging sand. She could feel his need for her, and yet she had no idea where he was! Behind her, she could feel an oppressive presence. A cold shiver, despite the intense heat, raced down her spine at the ominous feeling it gave off. Only able to turn her head, she vaguely caught a glimpse of a figure neither man nor woman, but awesome in power. Frightened blue eyes met those of malicious gold, and a swirling darkness more choking than any sand storm encircled her. She beat against it frantically, yet she could feel her strength dwindling. A soft moan of sorrow escaped her lips before she was swept under.
