If ever there were a time in his life where uncertainty was paramount in his being, this would most certainly be it. As he gazed at the hand outstretched to him he wondered, not for the first time in these few moments shared between them, who exactly this creature was, and how he’d come to be in this situation? Leai claimed to know his mother, but the Lady Izayoi had mentioned once during her time of living that the only demon she had ever known was his father. So, either she lied - a thing the boy could not even fathom, for he fancied his mother a saint - or Leai was trying to deceive him.
"Who are you?" he asked, his skepticism written clearly upon his face. He gazed into the eyes of the handsome man before him, searching for proof of his deceit. Leai was taken aback for a moment by the question. After a short while he collected himself and responded. "InuYasha," he said slowly, trying to calm the suddenly distraught child. "I am a friend. A fellow enemy against the Goddess that has plagued this world over long with her guile. I wish only to rid this world of her and her like, which, unfortunately, also means destroying her son, whom I know that you've grown fond of, even after only a short time spent with him. "But I must warn you, InuYasha, he seems genuine when you first meet, but he is just as false as She is. Once he knows he has gained your affections he will use them against you at every opportunity. He will torture you, InuYasha. He will cause you the greatest agony you will ever know." "I don't-" InuYasha tried to deny. "I just met him. I'm not- how could I possibly-" "It's alright, child," Leai consoled. "I have been where you are now. I know how charming he can be, how desirable he makes himself. It is a game, you see, a game that mother and son revel in. She has told you that you are to be his mate, has she not?" InuYasha could only nod in reply. "She has sent her slave, Death, to take all that you hold dear, all that you love?" Another nod, this time accompanied with a sad look of realization. "And She tormented you at every turn when you refused to conform to her will?" "Yes," InuYasha breathed, the small statement of admittance weighing so heavily upon his being. "And when you tried to make her pay for the torment that she visited upon you, her son just happened to come across you in the moment you chose to rest. I am sorry, InuYasha. I know that you had hoped-" "Stop, just stop!" InuYasha cried, the agony like a hot knife piercing his suddenly tender heart. "I don't understand. WHY do I feel this way? Why does this hurt so much?" "Because She is a goddess, InuYasha," Leai answered, stepping forward to clasp the boy's face in his hands. "She wants you to feel this way for him so that when he is done with you, you will fade into nothing. It is how the game has always been played." InuYasha grasped the hands that gently cupped his face, soothing away the tears he had not known he was shedding. "How could you know this? How could you know these things?" A sorrowful look met his question. "I know, little one, because I was one of the first they tried to play with. Fortunately for me, I was strong enough to survive them, but when I tried to warn others against the strife this farce of a romance would surely cause them, She locked me away in the darkest place imaginable and left me to rot." "How did you escape?" InuYasha asked now stroking the hands of Leai in order to comfort him. "You called to me. When you slew Death, you released me and the strength of your aura called me to you. I knew I had to find you, to shelter you from their darkness. To preserve your innocence, to give you a home, a safe haven from the woes visited upon you, and worry not, love, do these things I shall, whatever the cost. There were no words. There were no words to describe the plethora of emotions surging through him at that very moment; the anger, the hurt, the confusion, betrayal, and relief that settled in him all at once was overwhelming. The uncertainty that accompanied them left him with only discontent as it urged him to still be wary of this creature seeming to promise him all that he had ever wanted following the death of his mother: respite. Respite, and somewhere to belong. Somewhere that he could live in freedom without having to fear the consequences of such freedom for those he would come to love. Still, the lingering disquiet within his mind and heart was frightening. Why should he have reason to distrust the being standing before him, seeming open and honest and well meaning? Why should he have reason to hesitate accepting him, which he was clearly doing, when the other had done nothing to deserve such, but asked only for the trust and acceptance which InuYasha himself yearned to possess? A sinister thought crossed his mind just then. What if this hesitation was not his own? What if this was HER, stealing into his mind, changing his thoughts and feelings in order to make him more agreeable to her cause; so as to make her game more amusing for herself and her son, who had so soundly deceived him? Could he then trust his own heart to guide him in this, or must he be forever plagued with self-doubt and disparity? No, he decided, he had allowed himself to become too soon attached to a man he had only just met. He would not allow himself to become so naively ensnared once again, but that didn't mean he wouldn’t allow Leai to earn the trust he seemed to so desperately ask for. "Perhaps," Leai said, interrupting the hanyou’s thoughts, "we could be friends. If only to make you more comfortable with me, so that you may more readily trust me when the time comes to turn our swords against our common enemy." "Friends," InuYasha agreed pointedly, nodding his head. "Now, tell me more about this game, and how we’ll turn the tables?" Leai grinned. Oh, this poor, naive child. He shook his head when the boy in question turned away from him for a moment, his smile becoming more sinister by the second. This is going to be so much fun. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
