Sesshomaru had scoured the forest around the Eastern village. He had found a light dusting of her scent concentrated in a small clearing and followed it further east through the forest, to a small meadow near a road. He found her patchwork backpack and her broken bow, along with her quiver and several scattered arrows. It was obvious that she had been attacked. There had been roughly four unfamiliar youkai in the clearing with her and the pungent aroma of holy powers. She had purified one of her attackers, but had been carried off by the other three. The Miko was no push over when it came to a fight. She had flattened him on his back on many occasions. That meant that she wasn’t paying attention and was taken off guard. He had followed the trail only to have it end at a large lake. He searched for several weeks, but didn’t turn up anything.
He had returned to Edo after the first frost and had given the news to his ward. She had cried and made the shrillest noises he had ever heard. His ears throbbed but so did something deep inside his chest. It was foreign and yet mirrored the pain Rin was experiencing. After some consoling from her betrothed the girl calmed enough to speak intelligible sentences, but the tears remained. He was never one for comfort and reassurances. He simply stated things plainly and truthfully, but for the first time in his long life he actually wished to lie. He could not bear to see the girl in such discontent. He figured the Miko to be dead, probably devoured. That was the whole point of her training to begin with, but she broke rule number one and had paid the consequences. He had made the excuse that snow was on the horizon and he could not track something through the snow. He proceeded to tell her that the Miko was resourceful and had probably found shelter in the mountains, which wasn’t entirely impossible, just unlikely. Either way, he would be returning to his fortress in the West and he needed Rin to come with him. She had postponed her union until the Miko was found. He thought her reasoning foolish, but he couldn’t argue with the results. She was still under his care and that pleased him greatly. He would not leave Rin in this village during the frigid winter months to suffer the below freezing temperatures in one of those inadequate huts. It had taken much coaxing from the old Miko and several promises from Kohaku to continue the search with the houshi for Kagome before she finally agreed to leave with him. Jaken was preparing Ah-Un for their departure and Sesshomaru was ready to be rid of the overwhelming odor of humans and return to his lands, but the tajiya went into labor and Rin had insisted on helping the old Miko with the birth of the human pup. His ward hadn’t even waited for his approval before disappearing inside the hut to attend the screaming woman. Several hours later the pain filled shrieks of the slayer gave way to the tiny wails off new life. Rin had emerged from the hut with a goofy grin and a silent nod to him before climbing aboard the double headed dragon. They had been in the West for a few weeks and the restlessness and anxiety that constantly surrounded Rin was beginning to become irritating. She had lost the cheerful carefree attitude she always had and was reduced to a glum lump that moped about. It was most distracting. This behavior could not continue. He had summoned Rin to his study and was waiting patiently for her arrival while he read over his backlogged paperwork. There was much that needed to be done to make up for his unplanned extended absence and it seemed like this was the only room he had laid eyes on since his arrival. Perhaps she missed his company or maybe the tajiya whelp. He hoped it wasn’t the boy. He was allowing Rin to marry him for her happiness, but he drew the line at bringing the boy to his personal sanctuary. There was a knock on the wooden door to his study. He placed the paper he was reading down on the desk when the servant entered. He bowed low and refused to make eye contact. Sesshomaru noticed Rin’s absence. “Milord, Miss Rin refused your invitation.” The young kitsune said with barely contained trepidation. Sesshomaru dismissed the boy with a flick of his wrist and rose from behind his desk. She would not avoid him. He was still her Lord and she knew her place. It was time he reminded her of it. He stalked regally down the family wing and entered Rin’s room without knocking. She was huddled under the blankets of her bed and from the smell surrounding her; he would say she hadn’t left it in several days. She held no scent of illness, only the burning odor of despair and uncleanliness. She never stirred when he sat on the edge of her bed, didn’t even turn her eyes to him. She just stared blankly out the window where the snow fell in steady flurries. “Rin, you will rise from this bed and acknowledge this Sesshomaru.” He said stoically, but his eyes lacked their normal ice. “But I don’t want to get up, Sesshomaru-sama. What’s the point anyway?” Her voice was ragged from the many hours of crying. “This Sesshomaru sees no reason for you to be melancholy.” He replied, slightly irritated with her unsatisfactory response. Rin just ‘humphed’ in response. That was the final straw. He would not be ignored, especially not by a petulant child. He made his way to her wardrobe and picked out a sky blue cotton kimono with a navy blue obi and threw them uncaringly on the sitting chair in front of the window she was emptily staring out. He grabbed the covers that covered her and yanked them into the floor. She focused her red rimmed eyes on him finally, but it was too late. She had her chance. He grabbed her up bridal style off the bed and she gasped in surprise. He had only carried her like this as a small girl and that was only when she was sick or injured. Her eyes widened when he approached her bathing room and she shook her head and began to flail her limbs trying to break his hold. Her struggles were futile. He walked to the edge of the spring and dropped her, night clothes and all, into the steaming water. She screamed in her descent and then surfaced sputtering and gasping. She glared daggers at him, but he ignored it and turned to leave. He stopped in the doorway and turned his head to glance at her over his shoulder. He fought a smile of amusement at her disheveled, sopping wet appearance. Her hair was tangled and plastered across half her face, she had her arms folded across her chest, and the look she was giving him would have sizzled a hole through anyone else. “You will bathe and be in the dinning hall for a proper meal in an hour. There is no discussion on the matter.” He continued on his way out of her room and allowed a small smirk to cross his face when she gave a rather impressive human version of a growl.“What the hell do ya mean ya wanna stop?!” InuYasha yelled. “Kagome’s still out there. We’re waistin’ time standin’ here and talking, Monk!” “InuYasha, my good friend, we simply need to warm up and eat something before we continue. We will be of no help to Lady Kagome frozen dead in the snow.” Miroku replied while clapping the red faced hanyou on the back. Kohaku shivered and nodded his head in agreement. Shippo just sat perched on his shoulder with his arms crossed looking at InuYasha and shaking his head. Sesshomaru had informed Miroku of his findings and the belief that Kagome was dead, but they all refused to believe it. Sesshomaru may have been her sensei, but that didn’t mean he cared about her the way the rest of them did. They would not abandon her in her time of need. Shippo had showed up not long after Sesshomaru and his pack’s departure. They had filled him in on the turn of events and he immediately volunteered to search for his mother. InuYasha never said a word about forming a search party; he just stalked directly out of the village after snatching Kagome’s pack out of the Monk’s hand. They had to scramble to catch up to him and it took almost all they had to pull him back to give them time to gather supplies for the journey. He grumbled and complained, not even Aiko was able to calm him, but InuYasha was always like that when it came to Kagome. Sango stayed behind with the twins and their newborn daughter in Edo. She wasn’t altogether happy about it, but she had just given birth. Miroku’s heart ached to be separated from his family, but it was a necessary evil. He needed to find his sister and bring her home safely. It had always been Kagome that had kept their little group in line and their spirits high, a task that was easy for her considering her sunny disposition, but one that even he was finding a little strenuous. They all had to stay motivated, had to keep the hope alive. He wouldn’t lie, the situation was grave. She had been missing for the better part of three months. Lord Sesshomaru, the Great and Terrible Taiyoukai of the West, couldn’t even find her. Then there was the weather to think about. Even if Lady Kagome had somehow manage to escape her captors, which he was positive she did, then she would have to find a way to survive the winter months with little to no supplies, which he was positive she found a way to do just that. All she had to do was hang on a little longer. InuYasha would never admit it, but Kagome was the only one who had loved him for the dirty half-breed he was. Well, originally anyway. She had brought together the entire rag tag family during the search for the sacred jewel shards and the hunt for Naraku. Then took a back seat to their happiness, letting each of them shine in their own light. She had brought love back into his life in the form of a little human seamstress and he never once thanked her. His guilt was eating at him. He should have been the first to notice her missing, not Lord Asshole’s runt. He had been too engrossed in his relationship with Aiko. How could he have been so stupid? She was his best friend, the one who took care of him, had glued his shattered soul back together and when she needed him the most, he wasn’t there. If anything happened to her, he would never forgive himself. “Feh. We’ll stop long enough for you weak humans, but know that we’re burning daylight.” He plopped down on a snow covered log and fingered the worn straps of Kagome’s pack that he had strapped to his back. Miroku set off to find wood for the fire and Kohaku sorted out the dried meats for a light meal. Shippo perched himself on the log beside InuYasha and sifted his little hands through his bangs. “We’re gonna find Mama, InuYasha, don’t worry.” “I ain’t worried ya little lint ball. Mind your own damn business.” He grumbled, shoving his arms in his sleeves. “Stupid Inuyasha.” He mumbled, but his heart just wasn’t in it. Miroku came back with an arm load of dry wood, smiling as he arranged it on the ground. Shippo hopped down and shot a blast of foxfire at the kindling. They all gathered around the raging fire and ate their rations in silence. Miroku and Kohaku loomed over the fire to get the blood circulating back in their numbed bodies, before they put it out and headed on their way. Shippo had to perch on Kohaku’s shoulder again, because he kept sinking in the snow. It brought to mind all the times Kagome carried him. He missed her so much. The only reason he left her was to train his youki so that he could be strong enough to protect his adopted mother, but she ended up being kidnapped without him around. He couldn’t help, but think that he could have done something to save her if only he had been there. He could have shot his magic top or thrown a blast of foxfire in the face of her enemies. He could have lured them away while she made her escape. He could have, at the very least, been captured with her so she wouldn’t be alone. He knew she wouldn’t hold it against him. She would kiss him on the head; tell him that she was glad he was safe and that she loved him. She had taught him so much and he wouldn’t let her down. He would keep it together and remain strong. They were going to find her and he was never going to leave her side again. He would hold onto that light of hope that she kindled in him so long ago and he would let it shine just for her. Kohaku hadn’t known Lady Kagome as long as the rest, but he knew she meant a lot to everyone, including his Rin. Rin had been on the verge of a breakdown when Lord Sesshomaru left in search of the priestess. She looked at Lady Kagome like a mother and he knew what the pain of losing family was like. He couldn’t allow his future wife to suffer like that. He hoped that Lord Sesshomaru was wrong about Lady Kagome being dead, but he wasn’t so sure. He guessed they would find out soon, especially at their current traveling rate, thanks to InuYasha. He was stealing his nerves to deal with the fallout of either result.
Ayame was the granddaughter of one of the most revered wolves in the tribe. She hadn’t been thrown in a cell like some common criminal, no; they had given her a decent den. She was under guard, of course, and couldn’t leave her chambers without permission, but she was allowed to dine with her Grandfather. They spent their meals in silence and she returned to her den in silence. There was little more than a week left before her arraignment before the pack. She wasn’t stupid, she knew the consequences of her actions, but in her defense, she had only been after the dirty little human bitch. Kouga got in the way when she was only trying to keep him from making a huge mistake. If Kouga would take the time to understand that she was better for him than a whole village of Kagomes, then he would see that she had never meant to harm him. She loved him. They were destined to be together. She could and would be the mate that he always deserved. The only thing she had to do was get the human out of the way. Kagome had been bad news from the beginning, constantly leading him on and using him to fuel her own ego. Everyone thought she was some kind of saint, Ayame knew better. All she had to do was to prove it. “You sent for me, Ayame?” A large white wolf asked from her doorway. “You know the reason I’m here, don’t you, Hiroshi?” She asked sweetly. “It is said you attacked Kouga in his den.” “No, I attacked than human he’s so infatuated with. He tried to stop me. He intends to make her the Princess of the tribe. I know you’ve heard the rumors. I just tried to stop him from bringing such weakness into the folds of the pack. She couldn’t even hold her own against a few of the snakes we’ve been dealing with. How is she supposed to be the Alpha female?” “I have the utmost respect for Prince Kouga. I have heard the rumors, but since I haven’t seen a human Miko anywhere, I disregarded it as a vicious lie. He means to mate this woman, you say?” He asked rubbing his chin in contemplation. “That’s exactly what I said. You understand why I had to do it don’t you? I can’t allow this union. It would be a disgrace to our kind and any offspring produced would be halfling abominations, tainting the blood of our pack.” She spat in reply. “I have to admit, I wasn’t that taken with the idea of the tribes being combined, but Prince Kouga had proved himself by his superior leadership. I cannot, in good conscious, continue to support him if he is going to lead our bloodline into such a distasteful direction. Our full-blooded cubs bring us honor and glory and our Alpha mating a Miko would dishonor our ancestors.” “Exactly, I knew you would understand, Hiroshi.” She said with an innocent smile. “I assume you summoned me here for more than just this pleasant little chat, Ayame. Tell me what you would have of me?” “It’s simple, really. I need you to deliver these letters. Take one to the Western Fortress and you can find the recipient for the other wondering somewhere on our lands. I plan on exposing this discretion to the rest of the pack during the hearing; I just need the proper proof first.” “The pack deserves to know what is going on without their knowledge well before then, Ayame.” Hiroshi said forcefully, while tucking the letters into his armor. “Do what you feel is best for our kin, brother. Just keep in mind that the element of surprise is our leverage and we can’t afford to lose it.” “You have my word that I will be discreet.” “Thank you for this. Now, you should get going before Grandfather gets suspicious.” She said patting his arm. He smiled at her before he bowed and left her chambers. She knew she could count on him. Hiroshi had grown up with in the Northern lands. They had trained together, became friends and held the same pack pride. Kouga had forgotten, but with the help of Hiroshi, she would show him where his loyalties lied. It was all working out perfectly. She couldn’t wait to see Kagome’s face when the Inu brothers showed up during her induction ceremony. She would run back to her beloved hanyou, like she always did, proving to the pack that she was unworthy to be called family. Then there was the matter of her needing the proper permission to leave a former pack to become a member of another. That is where Lord Sesshomaru came into play. He was InuYasha’s elder brother and therefore the Alpha of their motley pack. He was renown to be a hater of humans and the only thing he despised more than humans was his younger brother. He would give Kagome permission to leave his pack and InuYasha would cause a scene, which would end in a fight. Kagome would be shunned and the Counsel would be forced to see the attack on the Miko for what it was. She would be absolved of all her transgressions once they realized that she had been the one protecting their Alpha and the rest of the pack from the dishonorable and traitorous human. Kouga would come to his senses after that and take her as his mate. She flopped down on her pallet and laced her hands behind her head, smiling wickedly at the stone ceiling. She would have everything she deserved. It wouldn’t be long now.
