The Heir and the Spare
The Continent of Japan is in danger; humans and demons are engaged in a deadly war. To avoid calamity Princess Kagome, a human, finds herself betrothed to the heir of the demon-dominated Western Lands, Prince Sesshomaru. Too bad she finds herself falling for her future-husband's younger brother, Inuyasha.
.xx.
Kagome's heart stilled as a world never before seen unravelled before her. In an ovular setting was a ginormous waterfall, glistening as it careened off of overlooking cliffs. Trees, of all shapes and sizes, bordered a small cobblestone path that led towards the waterfall—Cistern Waterfall. Inuyasha guided Monsoon through the forest and, within moments, the bed of water that the falls fell into became visible. Kagome saw a small Buddha statue resting on a floating lotus leaf; mysterious green balls of light were floating around the statue.
"What's that?"
Inuyasha slowed Monsoon's pace. "Nobody knows." His response came as a husky breath against her ear. "Members of the Royal Family have always seen it; it doesn't hurt us, neither does it comfort us. I've been told that the light has been here since the beginning of time."
Without waiting for Kagome's response, Inuyasha dismounted Monsoon.
Without waiting for Kagome's consent, Inuyasha put his arms around her waist and hoisted her off of the stallion.
Without waiting for Kagome's approval, Inuyasha swept forward and enveloped her lips.
Slowly becoming used to feel of his body against hers, Kagome was not hesitant in wrapping her arms around his head and combing her fingers through his hair. Inuyasha released a throaty growl that only meant he wanted to feel more of the woman tangled in his arms. Around them, unnoticed by both individuals, were the mysterious green balls that normally orbited around the Buddha statue. The balls of light left their place beside the statue and began orbiting Inuyasha and Kagome instead.
They broke from the kiss in need of air but as soon as they refilled their lungs, they resumed where they left off. Inuyasha's left hand wrapped tightly around Kagome's waist and her fingers never stopped their ministrations. Subconsciously, Kagome began rubbing the base of Inuyasha's fuzzy triangular appendage.
That elicited an ethereal moan from the demon.
Monsoon neighed loudly and trotted off to lap his tongue in water but, just like everything else, that went unnoticed by Inuyasha and Kagome. A lone hawk, an animal that guarded the Cistern Temple, screeched as it flew overhead.
But the sound didn't faze them either.
Inuyasha felt the heat between their bodies as his lips coaxed Kagome's. She arched her back, pressing her chest closer to his, in need of feeling more of him. Their tongues danced to a silent tempo and their auras merged in unity. The balls of light began glowing brighter; the green casting over their skins.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they broke apart panting.
It was then that Inuyasha noticed the green lights. Still holding onto Kagome, he examined their surroundings.
"They've never hovered away from the statue before." He pointed out. Kagome tore her gaze away from the demon holding her and watched the glowing balls of light. They were an equal distance from each other as well as an equal distance from Inuyasha and Kagome. Their orbit was a slow pace; comforting, almost.
"We could speculate as to why they've left the statue." Kagome offered and Inuyasha's gaze snapped to her. Biting her bottom lip, Kagome smiled and said: "Or we could resume from where we left off?"
"Highness," Inuyasha breathed, pressing his forehead against hers, "you're a woman after my own heart." As soon as the whispers escaped his lips, they resumed where they had left off.
.xx.
Inuyasha and Kagome were sitting near the banks of the water; their feet dipped in what Kagome coined 'comfortably cool.' Inuyasha was leaning against his arms and Kagome was drawing her finger in the dirt beside her. The green orbs of light were still circling the couple.
"When your brother returns," Kagome broke the silence, "you and I won't be able to spend much time together anymore, will we?"
Inuyasha inhaled deeply and didn't look at Kagome. That thought plagued him since the moment he realized that he had irreversible feelings for his future sister-in-law; illegitimate feelings. He was almost positive that his father was able to decipher his scent intermingling with hers, but, his father could also assume that his scent was so integrated with hers was because they spend countless hours together, exploring the lands.
When Sesshomaru returned, none of that would be possible. Yes, he ran away because he did not want to wed a human and yes, when he returned he would act cold and indifferent to the warm and caring Kagome… but did that make a difference? Should it make a difference?
Inuyasha should never have made a move on Kagome, and now that he did he was unsure on whether he would be able to stop.
And Sesshomaru wasn't born just last century. He would know Inuyasha's scent on Kagome was more than just 'spending time' together… it was because they were doing more than just 'spending time' together.
Inuyasha dug his grave with that one.
But Kagome was simply irresistible and Inuyasha was thoroughly annoyed that Sesshomaru – the demon who didn't even want her—got her.
All while Inuyasha was available, standing idly by, potentially falling in love with the same, aforementioned Kagome.
He paused.
Falling in love? It surprised him that the realization didn't surprise him. And then he was going to spend the rest of eternity watching Sesshomaru mate, bed, and sire pips with Kagome.
He must've done something very horrible in his past life for God to punish him the way He was.
"Inuyasha?" Kagome's soft voice broke him out of his reverie. Smiling, and masking all of the ill-conceived thoughts behind a falsity, Inuyasha reached over and covered her hand with his.
"How about we cross that bridge when we get there?"
Kagome knew what that meant: no. They would not be able to spend any time together.
Inuyasha smelt the heightened scent of emptiness that spurred from Kagome. He knew deep inside that she was feeling what he was and that made his heart clench in pain. He didn't want her to hurt, but it was inevitable.
They had come so far deep that pain was inexorable.
"I suppose we will." Kagome whispered, wrenched her hand away from his touch. Inuyasha's blood began to heat—she couldn't just pull away from his touch like that! Inuyasha tried to keep his demon cool; she wasn't his woman. His demon was safely kept at bay but Inuyasha was fully aware that any wrong move and the youkai that slept within his blood would awaken to unleash an unfathomable rage.
And his brother, unfortunately, would be the first to feel the wrath.
"Come," Inuyasha finally said as he stood up and dusted his pants, "let's explore the area, shall we?"
Kagome looked up at his outstretched arm and decided that it was for the better. Who knew? It was probably the last time she got to spend with Inuyasha anyway.
Oh the ironies of life.
.xx.
"I'm going to wring that boy's neck when I get a hold of him." Inutaisho muttered as he strolled through the gardens with his mate. "What the hell possessed him to run off like a tiny chicken demon at the first mention of marriage?"
"Doesn't that sound oddly like you?" Izayoi playfully nudged him. Inutaisho wrapped an arm around Izayoi's shoulders and grunted—he presumed it sounded manly.
"Darling, if I didn't run away from Inukimi at the first mention of marriage, I wouldn't be here with you, now would I?"
Izayoi rolled her eyes. "Yes, sure, turn the tables why don't you?"
Inutaisho chuckled and leaned over to kiss his mate's cheek. "Aren't you glad that we have Inuyasha to show Kagome around in lieu of Sesshomaru?"
Izayoi frowned and gave her mate a deadpanned look. He wasn't being serious, was he? Izayoi wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or if he really wasn't able to tell what was going on between their younger son and their older son's bride. Shrugging her mate off of her shoulders, Izayoi took a step away from him.
"You haven't seen it, have you?"
"Seen what?"
In an exasperated fashion Izayoi planted her hands on her hips. "Inuyasha." She said curtly. "Kagome. Together. Time. Spending. Together."
Inutaisho frowned. "Darling, I don't follow…"
Of course he doesn't follow. Not only is a man but he's a demon man. Intelligence doesn't run in his kind. Izayoi thought sarcastically. "Your younger son and Sesshomaru's bride evidently care for each other." Izayoi paused and decided to add "a lot" as an afterthought. Inutaisho furrowed his eyebrows, as if to entertain what his wife just told him.
"Inuyasha and Kagome? Darling, that's preposterous."
"And you honestly think a giant breast-plate eating sea monster was out to eat them on their trip to the Miyaji river?" Izayoi asked in an obvious tone. "Face it, love," she snaked her arm around his, "true love is found on the surface of the Miyaji River." She looked up at him and smiled. "Isn't that where we met?"
Inutaisho bit his lower lip. "Yes but… Inuyasha and Kagome can't like each other."
"They can't, but they do. More than like, might I add."
Inutaisho sighed heavily. "This poses as a problem…"
"How?" Izayoi cut him off. "All we need is one of our sons – both of whom are princes to our lands—to marry the Princess of the North. Inuyasha, last I checked, is a prince."
"But he isn't the heir."
"To hell with the heir." Izayoi pulled away from Inutaisho. "Our beloved and courageous heir has run off into battle because he's more afraid of facing his future bride. Your spare, as you like to refer to Inuyasha, is here to ensure that our future daughter-in-law doesn't die of boredom and isn't intimidated by your kind."
Inutaisho scowled and turned to face his wife. "Then I will forbid Inuyasha from spending further time with Kagome."
"And have her go crazy?!" Izayoi screeched. Inutaisho really was being difficult. "What's the problem with changing the union from Sesshomaru and Kagome to Inuyasha and Kagome?"
"Her father didn't hand her to us saying 'Lord Inutaisho, please pawn my daughter off to whichever of your son that fancies her' now did he?!"
"And you're going to be completely content with living the rest of eternity watching your son and your other son's wife admiring each other from afar? Sesshomaru will be unhappy because he doesn't want to be with Kagome, Inuyasha and Kagome will be unhappy because they want to be with each other. This way, all of our children are happy!" Izayoi was certainly getting riled up and Inutaisho wasn't able to ascertain why. He didn't like fighting with his wife that was for sure. Trying to bring his temper down, Inutaisho spoke with a certain calmness that unnerved Izayoi.
"Darling," he reached for Izayoi but she took a step back. "We can't change the terms of union. Kagome marrying Inuyasha leads to nothing; the war will continue—"
Izyaoi cut him off, again: "What makes you so certain that her marrying Sesshomaru will end the war?"
"He's the next in line to ascend the throne."
"So is Inuyasha."
"He's the younger son."
"And what if Sesshomaru forfeits the throne?"
"He would never do such a thing!"
"Hypothetically."
"Izayoi, I refuse to entertain thoughts that will never happen."
Huffing, Izayoi turned around and began to storm back to the castle. Stopping halfway, she looked over her shoulder and shot: "I refuse to entertain you when you're perfectly content with seeing both our sons unhappy."
Inutaisho blinked. Did this just really happen?
.xx.
Inuyasha and Kagome were mounted on Monsoon and headed out of the Cistern Waterfall. Kagome mentioned, in passing, that she was slightly famished and Inuyasha was making it a point to make a stop at the Village of Demons to grab a bite to eat. Kagome was riding side-saddle in front of Inuyasha and his arms were wrapped snugly around her waist—they both noticed, again, how perfectly his body molded to hers.
As if it was meant to be.
"Did you enjoy your time, Highness?" Inuyasha's breath blew into Kagome's ear, making her senses go wild and hair stand on end. Trying to maintain her composure (though Inuyasha was able to aptly sense her lack of control), Kagome nodded slowly.
"I did." She answered as short and curt as possible.
"How much?" Again his breath blew into her ear.
Twisting her neck over, she silenced him with a kiss. Smirking against her lips, Inuyasha deepened it ever so slightly and pulled back, wanting more but knowing he was unable to take it.
The Village of Demons was just a few strides ahead.
"That much, hmm?"
Kagome blushed and chose not to answer. She looked away from Inuyasha and felt his chest rumble in amusement. Her heart was racing and she wasn't going to trust herself to open her mouth—she might splutter out something that did not make any sense.
She could hardly make sense of her thoughts.
They had an amazing time at the Waterfall: they explored the forest, kissed a bit more, Inuyasha took her onto his back and scaled the tallest tree to give her a rooftop view of the Cistern Waterfall. Kagome didn't want it to end but Inuyasha informed her that they had to be back at the castle in time for dinner. He intended on giving her a light snack, though, seeing as she was hungrier than usual.
"Have you ever tried pickled goat?" Inuyasha asked as they entered the Village. Kagome looked over at him and raised an eyebrow.
"That exists?"
Chuckling, Inuyasha squeezed her waist gently. It was his method of kissing her when physically doing so was out of the question.
"Yes, Highness, it does. And it's rather tasty."
"Is it raw?"
Inuyasha snorted and burst into laughter. "Raw?! Keh, we're demons, not animals!"
Kagome rolled her eyes and looked at the pathway that Monsoon was walking. "Sorry for not differentiating." She murmured under her breath which made Inuyasha succumbed to another bout of laughter. The Princess of the North never ceased to amuse him… which was a good thing.
"You'll learn soon," leaning forward, he added "wench" affectionately into her ear. Kagome's eyes widened and before she had time to react, they were bombarded with the same demons that saw them off earlier that day. Inuyasha managed to wave them off expertly and instructed a bird-esque demon that he wanted two skewers of pickled goat.
"Are you sure it's edible?" Kagome asked meekly and Inuyasha smirked, showing off his canine fangs.
"I'm positive."
.xx.
"Admit it."
"I admit to nothing." Kagome had her arms crossed in front of her as Monsoon guided them back to the castle. Inuyasha was trying to get her to admit that the goat did taste good but, as he knew she would, Kagome was resisting the truth.
"Admit it."
"No."
"Highness…" His voice had a warning tone.
"I refuse to admit to something that I do not believe to be true."
"So you don't find me the most utterly attractive man you've ever laid eyes on."
"I do but the goa—wait a second!" Kagome thwapped Inuyasha's shoulder but he was oblivious to it. Inuyasha was too busy laughing at Kagome's slip up and was slowly losing the ability to breathe. Oh, he would never let her live that one down for as long as they both shall live.
Kagome couldn't help it, though. His laughter was contagious and before she knew it they both were laughing till their sides hurt. It was a good day, Kagome thought. They spent quality time together, she got to see a beautiful waterfall, and Inuyasha was opening up more than he was when she first arrived in the West.
Actually, she was opening up a lot as well.
Their laughter, unfortunately, was cut short when one of the castle guards sprinted their way. "Prince Inuyasha!"
Both of their heads turned.
"Saitou," Inuyasha greeted him. "What is it?"
Saitou came to a halt in front of the horse. "He's back!"
"Who?"
What Kagome heard next caused her blood to run cold.
"Prince Sesshomaru! He just arrived at the castle."
