(A/N: Sorry for the late update, I was abroad for the last 3 weeks. So happy to be home.)
Previously:
She began the strenuous climb out of the well while lugging her tightly packed, yellow backpack. By the time she crested the lip, she was panting hard, out of breath from her trek. She sat on the edge to regain her strength, glancing around for any sign of life.
In the still, quiet of the night, the snapped twig behind her seemed louder than thunder. She turned sharply to try and make out what it was but her human senses could only determine a rough silhouette approximately the size of a man. Her heart pounded in her chest as the unidentified shadow moved closer.
Chap 7:
It had to be Naraku, who else would slink out of the shadows like that? He really had come for her. Her heart fluttered maddeningly in her chest, heightening with every step.
"Oi, wench," barked the familiar, grating voice, "you were supposed to wait for me to come and get you." Kagome visibly deflated as she was finally able to make out the shape of Inuyasha emerging from the trees. "What's got you acting so strange? Well, stranger than usual."
She simply shook her head, "Nothing Inuyasha. Just relieved is all." It was a lie and she knew it, no matter how she tried to spin her words and thoughts around. She had been looking forward to the danger and excitement Naraku could elicit in her. All Inuyasha 'relieved' her of was that anticipation. Oh well, nothing could be done about it now. She followed behind him as he escorted her back to the village.
Kagome had been on the right track with her train of thought. Naraku had been waiting for her. He commanded Kanna to notify him upon the girl's return. Unfortunately for him though, Inuyasha was being observant and protective, for once, and got there first. This new behavior from Kagome's guard dog could be a problem if it continues. Caution, and discreet meetings would be a wiser course of action now than allowing her companions to know of his appearance. The frequency of his visits was causing them to worry for her safety and thus keep her away from him. It was understandable, of course, but that only meant he'd need to put more thought into how to get to her. Her companions were hardly an obstacle.
Inuyasha had already explained how they'd be doing things from now on while Kagome was at home, so when he repeated the orders that Kagome was to be accompanied by at least one of them at all times, no one objected. That wasn't to say Kagome was especially pleased about it though. This became evident the next morning when she left Kaede's hut unannounced. The only one to be roused was Inuyasha, who quickly hurried after her.
"Hey, where do you think you're going?" he barked, aggravated that she'd ignored his orders.
"I just need a minute, Inuyasha. I'll be right back," she turned and continued walking, but heard his footsteps behind her, so she stopped again. "Inuyasha, I said I'll be right back."
"I ain't leaving your side, woman," he looked unperturbed, arms crossed over his chest, golden eyes daring her to object again.
"Oh, is that right?" she challenged with equally calm confidence. He nodded, thinking he'd won. "So, you intend to follow me to the latrine, watch me remove my skirt and panties, and go pee?"
Inuyasha's face fell instantly, growing red with intense embarrassment. "I'll go get Sango," he muttered hurriedly and lept away.
This was only the beginning too. She now had to either announce everything she was planning to do or discreetly motion for Sango to come with her. It was embarrassing and infuriating. And all because they didn't want her to see Naraku. Granted, they had no idea the real reason he kept showing up, but still. It didn't help that she was uncharacteristically moody. She chalked it up to her frustrating situation, but something told her it was more than that.
It had already been several days since her return and there had not been a single sign of Naraku. His absence was inexplicably wearing on Kagome. She couldn't explain it, but she felt as if she needed to see him again. It wasn't love, or even lust that was driving this need, it was something deeper, more necessary. She had no idea what it was though.
Tamari, who had continued to travel with the group, if only to keep an eye on Kagome and wait for Naraku to show again, was the only one who recognized Kagome's strange behavior for what it was. She could only shake her head at the poor girl's predicament. She had warned her, afterall.
Mrs. Higurashi and family returned on Sunday just as the note had said. In its place was instead a note from Kagome saying she'd been back.
"Oh, it looks like we missed Kagome," she said kinda sad.
"Sis, was here?" Sota asked, looking for verification.
"It appears so," she smiled, hiding the anguish she felt on a daily basis with her daughter being away and in danger most of the time. "Let's get you ready for bed, Sota. You have school tomorrow."
Later in the week, after he had left for school and, while grandpa was out back organizing his ancient relics in one of their storage houses, there was a knock on the door.
"Hello, how may I help you gentlemen?" Mrs. Higurashi addressed the formal looking men in her doorway.
"As I'm sure you are aware of, the school performed a mandatory drug test for 'Deep' last week," the man explained. "Whereas Kagome Higurashi's results are not consistent with this recent epidemic, they are unusual. We do not have the authority to do anything about her since it is not 'Deep' that she is on, but we highly suggest that you take her to a doctor who can better direct you." He handed over the paper explaining her test results as he finished his explanation.
"Oh, I'm sure it's just from all the drugs she has to take for her ailments," Mrs. Higurashi shrugged off the men's concerns with a well-hid lie. "I will show this to her doctor to make sure though. Thank you for this information." The men nodded and left. Back in the kitchen, Mrs. Higurashi collapsed at the table and looked over the paper worriedly. "What have you gotten yourself into Kagome?" She was on the verge of breaking down with worry.
She rose from the table and picked up the phone, "Hello, doctor. Yes, this is Mrs. Higurashi. Can I get a consultation..."
"Windscar!" bellowed an over eager half-demon chasing after a Shikon jewel shard. The blast was a direct hit, which in this rare case, was not necessarily a good thing. The reason was because the specific demon that possessed the shard was some kind of nasty slug demon and the windscar made it explode. A shower of the nastiest combination of slime and guts rained down over the combatants. The only ones to not get soaked were Sango and Kirara who were flying at the time.
Already beyond irritated, the shower of grime pushed Kagome over her limit, "Inuyasha!" He froze at the tone of her voice, bracing himself for what he knew was coming. "Sit boy!" She'd been resorting to the enchantment much more frequently, as of late. "Look at what you did! Couldn't you have used a less messy way to slay it?"
She stormed off, the only silver-lining being that they had just passed a hot spring not long ago. A hot spring Inuyasha had refused to stop and let them rest at. Yes they were chasing the 'terribly fast' slug demon, (yes, that's sarcasm,) but sometimes she just needed to relax.
Back in his hole, Inuyasha mumbled near inaudibly into the dirt, "Go after her."
Tamari had caught up to her first, having figured out the human enough by now to know exactly where she was heading and thinking it was a marvelous idea.
"You'll feel better after a nice soak, Kagome," she reassured, earning a genuine smile. Sure, Tamari was a bit jealous, but the more she hung around Kagome, the more she couldn't help but like and sympathize with her.
Suddenly, Kagome got a brilliant idea. Tamari was on friendly terms with Naraku, that much she knew, so if it was Tamari who was 'chaperoning' her, than maybe she'd be able to see him. She'd need to try to get alone with her. Maybe during a bath or something.
At about this time, the rest of the group caught up. "Inuyasha, Tamari and I need to take a bath, since you got us covered in slime, so stop following," Kagome suggested, anger hidden just under the surface, ready to burst free at the slightest reason.
"Keh, fine," he agreed reluctantly, not wanting to be sat again. "But take Sango with you."
"Why?" Kagome turned around. "She didn't get dirty?"
"Because I don't trust that wench," he motioned towards Tamari. "She's in league with Naraku so if he showed up I doubt she'd protect you from him, nor do I think she's strong enough to protect you from even a lesser demon." His tone was scathing, completely pissing off Kagome again. She was mostly angry because he unwittingly foiled her plan.
"Fine!" she said with a glare. "Sango, feel up for a bath?" her tone towards her friend much softer.
"Sure, Kagome," she smiled, but a little wary of Kagome's temper, they all were.
"Oh, and Inuyasha," her sickenly sweet tone scaring him even more than her angry one, "Sit boy!"
She stormed off as he smashed to the ground. Miroku, who had been wisely staying out of all the arguments, stood next to his flattened friend, "You really shouldn't provoke her so much, Inuyasha."
"Mrs. Higurashi," the doctor began, "these results are worrisome. Who's are they again?" She had blacked out the name, insisting on anonymity.
"What do the results indicate, doctor?" she asked, redirecting his attention away from the name.
"Well, it appears that this patient is on a series of drugs that I have never seen," he explained, trying to sound more knowledgable than he was about what he was looking at. "It looks like some combination that would cause sexual excitement, euphoria, minor hallucinogen maybe, such as clouded mind and dizzy... and it appears to be highly addictive."
"Oh my," she exclaimed, a distraught look on her face. "Anything else you can tell me, side effects, how to get... this person, off it?"
"I can't see anything that would indicate side effects, ironically, except for withdrawals. I'd really like to know what this drug is..." he probed, but Mrs. Higurashi gave no ground so he gave up and continued. "Withdrawals would likely be irritability, trembling hands, maybe even headaches or cramps, it's hard to say. Not knowing what this drug is, I couldn't say the best way to get off it."
"Okay, thank you for your assistance doctor," she acknowledged and turned to leave, indicating that she would not give him anymore information.
Black, soulless eyes diligently scanned the abyssal depths of the silver-lined scrying mirror. Kanna had been commanded by her dark master to keep a close watch on Kagome and notify him the second an opening presents itself for him to see her away from her companions. As of yet though, they were relentless in their protective duties. Master would not be pleased with this news.
"Kanna," his deep voice called, drawing her attention. "What have you to tell me?"
"Inuyasha does not allow Kagome to be alone. He insists on either him, the slayer, or monk be with her at all times," her small, lifeless voice answered, eyes showing no fear in the face of Naraku's displeasure.
"And her condition?" he inquired, already figuring he knew the answer.
"Her ire is roused at the slightest stimuli," she responded monotonously.
With his suspicions confirmed, he nodded and left for his chambers to think. His plan had been going so smoothly, with each kiss he delivered, he'd also leave behind a special miasma. Unlike the regular, lethally toxic miasma he used, this type had a much more pleasurable effect. It made its recipient melt to his touch with the added effect of desiring more of it. He had experimented with this miasma on Tamari a decade or so ago, so he was well acquainted with its effects. Kagome was beginning to experience the need for it, since she'd been without for a few days.
It would not take much effort on his part to incapacitate her lone guard, but if she were to see him harm her friends, it would set his plans in reverse. On the other hand, waiting out their paranoia was unacceptable. He could not allow her to overcome her growing addiction.
"Looks like you have a purpose afterall, Tamari," he said to himself.
All of her companions were giving Kagome a wide berth. She had already exploded at the smallest irritants several times. A tree root that tripped her got repeatedly stabbed with a charged arrow, an annoying fly caused her to go into a frenzy, chasing it around camp with 'murderous' intent flashing in her eyes, and when Inuyasha started digging through her bag and complaining that she was out of ramen, he got sat 6 feet deep.
Now she was getting ready to sleep, the only problem was her fingers couldn't stop shaking, making it difficult to zip up her sleeping bag. She growled out loud, voicing her frustration, and grabbed the whole zipper mechanism in a fist instead, ripping it up towards her head. This rough method worked and she laid down, eager to fall asleep and rid herself of the headache she felt coming on.
It was still early, not even fully dark out, but even Inuyasha knew better than to comment on that to Kagome. Sitting by herself, away from the others, Tamari couldn't help but feel sorry for Kagome. She could recall all too vividly just how painful the absence of Naraku could be. Eventually, she had built up enough of a resistance to his substance that the withdrawals only caused a short-lived, dull ache. That did nothing to dull the memories though.
As she stared on, watching the poor girl writhe in her foreign blanket, fitfully trying to fall asleep, the most peculiar butterfly fluttered in front of her face. It was behaving strangely, circling her, landing on her, fluttering away, always in the same direction, then returning. It continued to do this until Tamari rose from the ground. It appeared that the butterfly was trying to lead her away. Giving into curiosity, she wandered off after it.
A fair distance away, the butterfly finally landed and the illusion cloaking it faded, revealing a black and yellow wasp-like insect perched on a branch near its master. He was cloaked in the white pelt of a baboon, but she knew it was him.
"Naraku," she breathed affectionately, "I'd wondered when you'd call for me." She approached him calmly, comfortable in presence. They had long since dropped the formalities. Her hips swayed as she closed the distance but it didn't affect Naraku in the slightest. He had no interest in her body at this time.
"I see you have made yourself comfortable traveling with my enemies," his voice gave no indication if this news was irksome to him or not.
She stopped approaching him a few feet away, unsure as to his mood, slight fear creeping into her, "I... well, they saved me once, and I thought I might run into you sooner if I followed them..." She was nervously trying to explain herself.
"I care not for your reasons," he stated coldly, enjoying how she still feared his temper. "You have put yourself in a position I can use." He grinned mischievously at her. Her fear finally evaporated. He wasn't upset at her after all. She let out a breathe she didn't know she'd been holding.
"You're task is simple..." he began.
(A/N: So now you know, Naraku has been drugging Kagome and getting her addicted to him. Not so OOC now that you know, yeah?
The part I'm kinda stuck on now (a few chapters ahead), is do I have Kagome give herself (under the influence of his drug) to Naraku before she finds out, or after? I don't want to rush that lemon, but I'm having a hard time visualizing Kagome trusting him enough after she finds out.)
