Our early days at Oji-san’s house went as well as could be expected. My personal chambers where quite lavish. Tapestries hung everywhere, and flowers in vases decorated each corner. There was an oaken armoire, and a whole wall of weapon racks. Even my bed was richly colored. Dark blue and white.
I wasn’t prepared for the bodily onslaught I got last night, but even that couldn’t spoil my overall outlook on the situation. It was pretty bad last night. Okie sensei introduced himself and his team and gave me a quick rundown of his duties. He was to instruct me in courtesy. Then his team attacked me. They filed my nails and cut my hair to my shoulders, dipping both in a sappy oak oil. Then they ripped my facial hair away. I’s ashamed to say that a tear escaped my eye when they did my armpits. Then, they poked holes into my lash line and poured some sort of black gunk into them. Then came the needle. It wasn’t as bad as I thought and after I saw the finished product, I actually liked it. The feeling of getting the crescent moon upon my left upper arm wasn’t pleasant, but the actual artwork was pretty cool-looking. And yes, I was quite proud to have my ancestor’s noble crest on my skin.
When I awoke, my neck was cramped from the strange cradle I had my head resting on during the night. The sun was just peaking over the mountains and I decided that now was a good time to get dressed and find Uncle. My long arms stretched out and over my head as I walked towards the large dressing chest. Upon opening it, I found a multitude of different colored clothing. That’s when Okie sensei walked in and ‘tsk’ed. The coyote demon walked over to me and peeked in the cabinet.
“For breakfast, you wear a plain white outfit.”
I selected the appointed garments and dressed quickly while sensei was turned around. The white tabies that I had to wear where alien on my usually naked feet. Thank goodness I wouldn’t have to wear zories, since we were in the house. I don’t know if I would be able to handle things in between my toes.
When I was dressed, my sensei led me towards the corridor I had come from the day before and into the main hall. We went into the opposite hallway that we followed Jaken into yesterday and I was deposited into the dining room ceremoniously. And I do mean that. It seemed that everything we did was symbolic. I had to stand beside the doorway and wait with my hands straight at my sides and my back straight. Ryuumiu and Kuritsuki walked into the room a couple of minutes after my arrival. Well, heavily shuffled is more like it. I did a double-take when I actually looked at her. They had also attacked her. The usually wild curls and waves of her black hair where tamed into a long elegant braid, the one white streak running through it the centerpiece of the palate. They had even taken her hair from the usual left-sided part and ran it straight down the middle. Ryuumiu’s high and pronounced cheekbones where even more noticeable because if her eyes. They were outlined with the same black ink that had been poured into my lids, but her whole eye was done whereas only my top lid was invaded. It made her eyes look very… sexy? Is that okay to say about your sister’s eyes? No matter. Her eyes had always been big and almond-shaped, but the black really brought them out. I’d never noticed how high her outer corner was arched, or that her inner corners came down even lower into a perfect point. The way her eyelashes where separated brought out their length and thickness, and the coloring just added to the fact that she looked like a predatory cat. Her lips where stained a dark red, and it looked really good on her full mouth. If her mouth would have been a longer length, her lips may have looked less swollen. Little sister sent me a scorching glare as her sensei was instructing her. She clasped her tanned hands in front of her groin and looked straight ahead. Her coyote instructor (would all of our instructors be coyotes?) left us alone after uttering her final warning.
“Do not move until Lord Sesshomaru arrives. It is considered extremely disrespectful. Even if he takes hours.”
When the demoness left, Ryuumiu exhaled deeply and turned her eyes in my direction. She was following her sensei’s directions exactly, which had me very baffled.
“Why are you being such a good puppy?”
I teased.
“Because if I’m not, she’ll whip Kuritsuki.”
Wow. That was cruel. I gave the brute a good look. Even he was staying completely still, even seeming to stand straighter. Even stranger was the jewelry he had on.
“Why is your wolf wearing that?”
‘That’ was actually ‘those’. On each ankle he had golden hoops that almost touched the floor, and around his neck was a heavy-looking gold collar that connected to a gold breast plate. The breast plate was connected to a girth that went around his shoulders and back down to his withers. I’d never even seen a human that adorned. Sister shrugged and looked down at the frou-frou wolf.
“I think those witches just wanted to play dress-up.”
Kuritsuki looked up at her. Usually, his face was buried into her outer thigh but he dared not move.
“He looks pretty dashing though.”
She smiled down at him.
I shifted slightly when we stood there for five more minutes. Ryu was getting a little antsy too. Ten more minutes and all three of us where itching to move. We thought we were saved, but it was only Rintsuki that entered. He looked more like his mother than Uncle. Her had the tell-tale golden eyes like mine. But, his skin was a healthy white as opposed to the alabaster skin that I and many of my kin shared. His hair was also a honey-tinged brown like Mui. And unlike most of the men in the family, he was brawny instead of lithe. He stood next to Kuritsuki silently, still as a board. Minutes passed by in silence until he surprisingly broke it,
“You look quite lovely, Ryuumiu-chan.”
He glanced at Ryuumiu and she gave him an uneasy smile,
“Arigato, itoko. You look lovely, too?”
She was struggling a little with formalities, it seemed. Rintsuki gave the smallest of smiles.
“I do not mean to sound rude, only to save you grief. When you smile or laugh, your teeth should not ever show.”
Ryuumiu’s eyebrows drew down,
“Does that only apply to bitches?”
Ah, she was almost catching on.
“We don’t use words such as that. But, yes, that only applies to women.”
Well, that was the most I have ever heard him talk so far in my life. Ryuumiu didn’t seem pleased by the news.
“May I ask what this magnificent creature is called?”
The older boy changed the subject quickly. That perked sister up dramatically. Kuritsuki was a sharp one, and he had narrowly missed a chance to be lectured on the ridiculousness of our culture.
“This is Kuritsuki. Oj… I mean… Lord Kouga?”
He nodded at her to indicate that she was on the right track,
“Gave him to me for my fifth birthday.”
“And have you bred him?”
“Um… No… I thought about it, but I didn’t really want to burden Lord Kouga with another litter of pups. He already has so many wolves to care for.”
“Why don’t you just ask him to provide you with a female to keep, then the litter would be yours?”
“Because mama and papa would shit their britches.”
Rintsuki cocked his eyebrow at her language, and she quickly apologized,
“Warui, I’m not used to filtering my mouth.”
I piped up with a correction before he could, feeling very left out of the conversation.
“Gomen’nasai, imoto.”
I said. Ryuumiu glared at me.
“How about, ‘I’m sorry, this is all very new to me,’ you don’t have to talk to me like I’m a complete moron.”
I didn’t know anymore whether it was her hormones, her moon cycle, or just her brain that made her so snappy towards me.
“I’m only trying to help.”
“Noted.”
We were silent again for another few minutes. Then, the spawn of the dark lord came prancing in. With her perfect white hair, and her flawless alabaster skin, and those demented blue eyes. She stood beside her older brother and made a closed-mouth smile to us.
“Ohayo itoko, ohayo ani.”
We greeted her back accordingly.
“It’s such a lovely day. Perhaps we could have instructions outside.”
She said in her dreamy voice. Dear reader, do not be fooled by first impressions. No matter how lovely she may seem now, you will eventually see the true evil nature of this beast.
“But dear sister, your lovely skin would redden from the sun.”
She looked listlessly out of the window,
“But dear brother, to bask in the great star’s embrace would be worth all of the pain my fair skin could take.”
Kami, they were creepy together. I remember wondering briefly if they wrote haikus together before or after they rutted.
Our aunt Mui entered next, taking her place beside her daughter. Her hair, like her son’s, was a warm chestnut brown with ash blond streaks falling all over. Her eyes where a clear cerulean color.
“Ohayo musuko, musume. Ohayo oi, mei.”
We all greeted her.
“How long does Oj… Oji-sama usually take?”
I could have slapped my sister. He usually took as long as he damn well pleased, because he is the LORD OF THE WESTERN TERRITORY. And we were IN HIS HOUSE.
“Usually after his pre-dawn draw up. He writes a list of things to do for the day regarding the lands, meetings, patrols, and other lordly things. I make a pre-dawn list of things regarding the household such as the cleaning schedule, repairs, lessons, and so on.”
Aunt Mui has always been a very kind demon, and it showed through now as she explained things that where none of Ryuumiu’s business.
“Gomen’nasai.”
Ryuumiu said with a victorious smile. This time, she kept her mouth closed when her lips spread.
We all exchanged small-talk for a few minutes. Finally, after I had been standing there for precisely twenty-eight minutes, uncle showed up. We waited until he stood at the head of the table before the six of us walked to the table. Mui bowed,
“Ohayo Shujin.”
“Ohayo Chichi.”
From the lordling and his sister.
“Ohayo Oji-sama.”
I said, Ryuumiu echoing me.
Sesshomaru gave a much more shallow bow to us.
“Ohayo Kazoku.”
He sat down, and then we sat. Kuritsuki stayed against the wall when Ryuumiu held her hand up to him. I was mindful to grab Ryu’s hand least she sit in the wrong spot. I guided her to aunt Mui’s left side, and I sat in front of Ryu.
“The both of you look presentable this morning. I hope that the marking went well.”
He said it as a statement instead of a question, and Ryu replied before I could. I a rather surprising tone, too.
“Gomen’nasai, oji-sama. I do love it. I was actually hoping to get another, with your permission?”
Wow, she was picking up manners more quickly than I anticipated. Uncle raised an eyebrow,
“Of what?”
“I’m not sure yet, I wanted to get your permission before planning one.”
Well, she was beginning to behave like a real lady. I saw aunt Mui stiffen slightly in the corner of my eye.
“No.”
Sesshomaru said evenly as tea was poured silently for us by a jackal demon. I was almost as shocked by his answer as Ryu was. She had asked so nicely, and that was a rarity for her.
“Why?”
Her voice rose slightly.
“You did not think it through thoroughly. The fact that you want it, but have no explanation of how or why, is proof that you aren’t yet mature enough to receive another besides the one I have given you.”
He seemed to be done with the subject. Ryu surprised me again my glowering at her lap instead of arguing. The coyote demon must have put the fear of kami in her. I changed the subject before things got awkward.
“Oji-sama, do you only have canine demons in your employment?”
I asked, genuinely curious. Uncle looked at his wife, and she explained instead,
“Mostly, but not all. The exceptions are your courtesy senseis. They are coyote demons, and coyotes aren’t actually canine.”
Well, I actually didn’t know that.
“Do canines work more efficiently than the other demon species?”
“No, your oji simply prefers the smell of them to other demons.”
Oh. Of course. Breakfast was brought out to us. Nori and natto where placed before each of us, with what smelled like broiled horse as the main dish. I looked to my sister, who stared in horror at her plate. She looked like she was going to hurl.
“Is there something wrong, Ryuumiu?”
Yukiyuu asked in her whisper-like voice, showing fake sympathy. She was a good actor. Ryuumiu silently looked at our cousin, then back at her plate,
“Um, I don’t eat meat.”
She seemed to be whispering, too. Aunt Mui covered her mouth and giggled,
“That’s preposterous; you have at least some inu demon blood in you. How is it possible that you do not crave meat, child?”
Sesshomaru and Rintsuki stopped eating to stare at my poor sister, awaiting her answer.
“I do crave meat. I just choose not to eat animal flesh.”
Everyone was silent. Ryu looked at me with questioning eyes. Sesshomaru made a ‘hn’ before finally speaking,
“That is imbecilic. You will eat.”
Ryuumiu’s eyes went wide, and she slowly shook her head. Uncle growled low,
“I will not command it again. You will put that meat in your mouth, and you will swallow it.”
Ryuumiu’s voice began rising a little again,
“I can’t. If you have some… human somewhere… I’ll eat that. But, I really can’t eat this.”
Sesshomaru’s spike in scent was threating, and both of the other females gasped in shock.
“How barbaric! Eat a human? That’s disgusting!”
Yukiyuu said with venom.
“That’s cannibalistic!”
Aunt Mui said with a hand over her heart. Sesshomaru’s growling voice was still very even when he said,
“Child, you are not a beast. You will eat this meat, or you will suffer consequences for being both vulgar and disobedient.”
I could feel my sister’s heat rising. Her scent was wild. Her mis-matched eyes where staring into Sesshomaru’s. No, Ryu, don’t do that. She always did that. Either she didn’t know or didn’t care about the totem pole. I felt like she should know by how angry it made her when people wouldn’t break eye contact.
“I. Will. Not. Eat. Animal. Meat.”
She stood up abruptly from the table, the color vanishing from her tanned cheeks.
Rintsuki reached across the table for her hand,
“Cousin, please, I don’t want to see you suffer.”
Now Sesshomaru stood up, towering over her short stature.
“You will train without eating.”
“Father, please.”
The inu lord growled menacingly at his son and the young man looked away, baring his neck.
“Furthermore,”
Ryuumiu was breathing faster now, her fangs bared.
“You will not be training with your usual sensei, but with me. Go stand in the corner and wait until further instructed.”
He pointed a clawed hand to the wall where the gold-plated wolf still stood. He looked very confused. On the one hand, his mother was extremely angry. On the other, the wolf’s would-be target was sending out an aura so powerful that it scared him. His instinct was telling him to run, but to stay. His black hackles where raised and his fangs where bared, but he whined instead of his usual snarl.
My sister picked up the slab of broiled horse and began stomping away to the appointed wall, her strides so long that she tore the long white kimono that bound her legs together so tightly. Instead of standing like uncle had commanded, she threw the door wide open and marched through it, Kuritsuki following cautiously behind her. His teeth clamped down on the juicy steak that she handed him and they were soon out of sight. We ate the rest of our breakfast in silence.
