‘There is a terrible rumor from the other side of the forest.’
Tenata, who was a farmer, frowned deeply. He did not like gossip, especially this close to the end of the season. If word got out that it was dangerous, no one would by his crop.
‘Quiet, fools.’ He snapped
‘But this sounds very odd. They say that there is a beast devouring maidens. It steals them away. They said in Itigawa that everyone between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five simply vanished from their beds.
Tenata shifted uncomfortably. He had a daughter at home, and he did not like such strange lies, ‘This village is protected by a powerful god. No one would dare to do such a thing. It is hogwash. You should get back to work.’
But stilll…
Tenata chose to go home that night instead of sleeping in the fields with the rest of the men.
He wanted to check in on his daughter, telling himself that he was being a fool.
He was not prepared for the site before him.
Streets, strewn with torn limbs…corpses of his neighbors.
‘Sakura!’ he howled, searching every home, finding nothing…
And he looked around at the bodies, stopping suddenly.
None of the dead were young women.
There were elderly women…but every woman of child bearing age…had vanished.
