Sesshomaru had hoped that she wouldn't smell the lie coming off him but the second her eyes lit up with surprise, he knew that she had. He released his whip from her wrist and stood there waiting.
"You are lying to me Sesshomaru. What I don't understand is why. Why do you need to me to believe so desperately that you hate what I am?" Still he stood there, not so much as a twitch in his features and he wouldn't even meet her eyes. She was getting angry and impatient but she was afraid he would leave her here and now if she pushed too hard so she tried a different approach. "Sesshomaru, please look at me." She spoke softly and moved a few steps closer to him. He finally brought his eyes up to meet hers and though it was very faint, there was great pain behind the stoic mask that he had become such a master of. "Sesshomaru. Not long ago, you asked me to do something that was very difficult for me. Though I am sure it would have happened sooner or later, that spell was the only thing besides my elemental powers protecting me from those that seek to take them from me. I have made myself vunerable, simply for the fact of appeasing your curiosity. I believe that you owe me this."
She was right of course, but he had spent many years controlling his baser emotions, refusing to let them be known and it was very difficult indeed to let them out now. Even Rin very seldom got a glimpse at what was going on inside his heart but he resigned himself to trusting her, much as he had all those years ago. "There is something I need to take care of first, please wait here." And he was off.
He was gone before she could even blink and she wondered if he really would come back. She figured he was going to check on the little human girl that he had placed in this village after they had destroyed Naraku and she decided to wait. Setting down beside the stream she let her thoughts drift. It had been a shock for her to learn what had become of him after she had finally been able convince Mizuki to travel outside of their home. He had become a ruthless demon, killing without reservation or question. It had broken her heart to know that the sweet little puppy she had grown to care for during her time at the Inu no Taisho's home had grown so cold. Then she learned of the little human child that traveled with him and everything changed. The little girl had opened his heart, allowing him to feel compassion for the first time in almost 200 years. She woud have to remember to thank the girl when she got the chance. She felt him approaching and pat the spot next to her for him to sit down. Just like we used to. She thought as he sat down next to her.

Sesshomaru found Kohaku and Rin under the same tree he had been perched in earlier that day sound asleep. The smell of sex clung to the air around them but he had not smelled Rin's blood so he assumed that the boy had taken care of it in other ways. He smirked. The boy respected Rin. Most human males his age would have simply taken what they wanted to slake their lust, whether it was offered or not. It would not be long before Kohaku would ask for his permission to marry Rin as he was the closest thing to a father that she had. He would speak with Rin soon of her felings and if she truly loved him then Sesshomaru would grant the taijia his request. Satisfied that they were in no danger this night, he turned and rushed back to where Sakura waited, prepared to tell her anything she wanted to know.

"Do you remember Sesshomaru? For three years my favorite part of the day was sunset. Just like now, we would be perched in your gardens by the spring telling tales or simply enjoying the silence." She sighed."What happened to that puppy Sesshomaru?"
"He died when you did." He heard her shocked gasp at his revelation and ut of the corner of his eye he saw a single tear run down her cheek. He wanted to reach over and brush it away but he had started this and he needed to finish before he changed his mind. "You were my first failure Sakura. Before you I hadn't ever really cared about anything, even my father. He was always off to some battle and I really spent very little time with him growing up. My mother never showed the slightest interest in me so I never even tried and then one day you snuck into my gardens and everything changed. I was annoyed a first, as I am sure you remember."
"You kept having your guards drag me out." she laughed, making him openly smile.
"You never would go quietly and you just kept coming back, I had gotten so used to you being there that I finally just relented. After a while, annoyance changed to excitement. I couldn't wait until I got home from lessons or training just so I could tell you about it. For the first time in my life, had someone that I could call friend and the thing about it was you were just like me. You were alone and it just felt like our hearts were the same. I was even a bit jealous of that baka bird."
"I felt that when i pulled the memory from you." She said sadly.
"That day was one of the worst in my life. The only thing that was ever precious to me had been destroyed, or so I had thought, and I had been to week to it. As you saw, I vowed to never protect anything else as long as i lived. I trained hard to become the most powerful Inu-Youkai alive even, going so far as to even challenge my father once. It wasn't until I met Rin that my heart started to change."
"So that is her name. Rin. I had heard stories that a young human girl was traveling with you, but i never knew her name. How did she come to cross paths with you?" Sakura couldn't help but ask, her curiosity getting the better of her.
"I had battled InuYasha over our fathers sword the Tessaiga and had underestimated his power. I would have dies had it not been Tenseiga's will to save me. I was recovering in the woods when she found me. Couldn't even feed herself but was trying to care for me."
"Wait, she actually tried to feed you." The humor was evident in her voice and Sesshomaru chuckled.
"She did. She had come to me one day covered in bruises and one of her eyes was swollen shut and when I asked her what had happened to her... The little thing actually smiled. It reminded me of you. It made me so angry because I kept your memory locked tightly away and when it surfaced, so did the pain. So I left Rin alone and was going to continue traveling until..." He paused, the memory still a bit painful for him. The little girl lying dead in the dirt had made him wonder if this had what happened to her, if she had died alone after being ripped away from him.
"Until what?" Sakura urged him on.
"I smelled her blood, a lot of it and tensseiga was calling out to me, asking me to save her. I went back to find that she had been mauled by wolves of a demon tribe. She was the first one I revived with my fathers sword. I knew then that I could not fail again but I gave her the choice to follow if she wished. I was grateful that she had. Though it took a very long time for me to admit it even to myself, she was mine to protect and I did so with everything that I had."
Sakura felt bad for having judged his behavior after losing her so harshly. She hadn't realized until now how much had had truly come to care for her friendship."Thank you for telling me Sesshomaru. I know that you believed that you had failed in protecting me but as you can see..." she motioned to herself. "... I am alive and well."
"Why did you not come back?" He hadn't wanted to ask this of her tonight, knowing it was probably very complicated after learning of her heritage but his heart was in control of his head right now and it desperately wanted the answer.
"It is simple really. Mizuki would not allow it and having no power that I knew of at the time, I wasn't able to escape. If I tried, the barrier around our home would knock me back. Unfortunatly, Mizuki of course knew that my natural element was water and the barrier was infused with an electrical current strong enough to produce lightening if anyone but her tried to leave." She shuddered, remembering the pain that came with said lightening.
Sesshomaru's demon roared to life at her ommission."She did what?" From what he had seen in the vision's, this Mizuki was supposed to be her protector, never allowing any harm to befall her, including a protective barrier. Something felt wrong about the whole situtaion. "Why was she keeping you locked away? What reason did she give?"
Sakura was almost afraid to answer. She didn't realize that he would have such a strong reaction to her pain. "She told me that their were evil beings out there that wanted to absorb my powers, and that she had to keep me safe. I never recieved any more information than that until she died."
"How did she die?"
" I convinced her after a while to travel outside the wards to a village that lay nearby. Whe she was with me, the barrier didn't react so violently and it was more of a twinge than a shock when I went through. One day on our way back, we came across a female demon and a human sorceror. Mizuki told me to run and I did. I had no way of helping her and would only be in her way. It wasn't until I felt the wind enter my body and the memories flood my mind that I knew she was dead." She layed her head against his arm, hoping to calm his demon a bit. "I know her methods were extreme Sesshomaru, but she really was trying to do her best to protect me. The evil that we came across that day was what destroyed my mother and father. They were after me and knowing that she was going to die, she fought them. She stayed alive long enough for me to get far away, knowing that the spell surrounding me would keep them from ever finding me. She died, to save my life."
"How were they able to find you in the first place?"
"They found her. The spell that locked away my demon required the willing sacrifice of its caster. There was only one willing to die to ensure that the power within me was never gained by that evil. Mizuki still retained every trace of what she was and therefore, she was trackable. That was how I came to live in the west in the first place. Mizuki had hoped that your father would be able to keep me hidden and protected. It wasn't until someone betrayed his confidence that they were able to get through the wards of the palace to find me that night. After Mizuki perished, I ended up at Totosai's and he gave me these..."she pointed to her weapons."... and said that I would need them one day and I decided to find you, hoping that maybe you could find it in your heart to help me destroy this evil. Too many people have died for this supposed power that lives within me that I have yet to discover myself. What I do know is that if I lose, this world will become one of darkness and despair. I cannot let that happen."
"WE will not let that happen." Sesshomaru didn't know what dangers they would face but whatever it was, he would not fail her again.
