The room came blearily into focus, it was unfamiliar. In her travels with and without … someone… she didn’t remember a room like this. The moonlight made the pale walls glow. The windows were decorated with shells that clinked in the slight sea smelling breeze. The bed was softer than she was used to, except in … someone’s home. She held a hand to her head. Every time her mind skated over that someone her head hurt, yet she still wanted to remember.
She sat up slowly realizing how weak she felt. How long had she been asleep in this strange place? The view from the window was no help. All she saw were little white houses that looked eerie in the moonlight. She swung her legs over the side of the bed, it was like the one Kagome had, raised off the floor. It made it easier to get up and less of a fall when she dizzied and couldn’t hold her own weight. She cursed internally, not wanting to break the silence. She tried again, steadying herself while the wave of dizziness passed. She noticed she was wearing a thin white kimono she didn’t recognize. Had someone changed her? She could have been sick, though it made her shiver knowing that she had been so vulnerable in this strange place. It also meant she didn’t have all the things stored in the clever pockets of her priestess garb.
She grit her teeth at having to use the wall as support to get to the door. The window was too high up to manage in her current state. There was nothing in the room that she could use to defend herself and nothing to help her walk easier. Though it seemed like someone had been caring for her, she didn’t trust who and what she didn’t know. The door was only a curtain of strung shells. With one hand on the frame, she carefully maneuvered so to not jangle the shells as she passed. The few steps across the outer room without assistance was difficult but she made it. Leaning against the wall next to the door for a for a few seconds, or minutes, she took a fortifying breath and got ready to shamble away as quickly as she could. The main door creaked as she opened it making her cringe, she hoped everyone was soundly asleep. Her hand bumped something on the outer wall almost knocking it into a rack of other similar long-handled objects. It looked like the handle of a broom or garden tool. She raised her eyebrows. That works. Then she was off like a shot of molasses desperately hobbling away to find somewhere to hide.
Before she was more than a few steps past the threshold a voice called out. “Child, wait, where do you go?”
She wasn’t far before the woman tried to grab her arm. She nearly fell to the ground before she was caught by another pair of strong arms. She struggled weakly to get free. “Let me go!” Her voice was a disused rasp.
“I’ll explain everything later, Rin. I won’t let anything happen to you. You must pretend not to know me.” The young man’s whisper in her ear was insistent yet the familiarity of it calmed her.
She looked up into the face of a young man just a little older than herself, he wasn’t looking at her but the house she had come out of. His serious face was highlighted by the moonlight though she knew how it changed when he smiled and laughed. Kohaku.
Louder he called “I’ve got her Grandmother. She seems fine, just out of sorts.”
His voice was growing fuzzy in her ears, she realized he was holding her up more than he was holding her still. “Wh-” What? Why? Dizziness overtook her again, the stars swirled above her as everything fell away. The last thing to lose focus was his eyes looking at her with concern.
His strong fearless Rin collapsed into his arms. He carried her carefully not wanting to let her go, and not wanting to show his concern. He had kept a cautious but distant watch on her since he had gotten to the island. Pretending not to know her while he gathered information and trust, he had befriended the woman that cared for Rin and helped her when he could.
“Bring her in here Haku. That’s right. Oh, the poor dear must have been frightened when she awoke here. I wonder what her past has been for her to react so. She’ll be fine now.” The old woman pulled back the sheets on the bed while Kohaku laid Rin gently onto the bed. “Would you mind getting some water please Haku.”
He didn’t want to leave her but Kohaku had watched the old woman care for Rin for close to a week, so he knew she was safe. As safe as she could be on this island. She was safer asleep than awake from what he had learned. He got the water from the barrel and laid the basin beside the old woman. She seemed about the same age as Kaede from the village Rin normally lived in, maybe slightly younger. The woman cleaned Rin’s feet and hands before pulling the blanket up to the girl’s chin.
Kohaku wanted to stay but didn’t want to raise suspicions. “Do you need anything else Grandmother?”
“No, that’s alright. Are you still having trouble sleeping Haku?” The look in her eyes was kind as she glanced at him. “Would you like some calming tea?”
“Yes, please allow me, grandmother.” Haku reached the shelf with her herbal tea and got started.
She smiled and sat. It had become a bit of a routine with them this last week. “It is not unusual for newcomers here to be restless at first, so many of us come here from… violent pasts…” Her voice darkened with a mix of emotions, a resigned sadness winning out. “But I do hope that you find peace here. Moira wouldn’t have let you come if she had sensed that you had meant harm.”
“Moira?” He hadn’t heard the name yet, though he assumed it was the name of the priestess, holy man, or whoever maintained the barrier on this place. It had been a very invasive feeling to pass through it.
“The giant turtle we live on child.” She said it so matter of factly that it took Kohaku a moment to process.
He paused in his preparations to look at her. Her eyes gleamed with mischief. “Few come to us without any idea.” She could tell she surprised him and he could tell she liked surprising him. “Moira consumes demon energies and, with the help of a priestess, erects the barrier protecting us all as well as prolongs the lives of those on the island. She doesn’t let any enter with ill intent.” She glanced towards the room where Rin slept. “We are glad to have another priestess join us. Especially one so young. Our priestess needs an apprentice to help her with… some of the tasks now. Our lives are prolonged but age does still catch up with one.”
Kohaku sipped his tea calmly thinking over what she had said. She was editing, he knew, but he tried not to show any suspicion of her words or how readily she was telling him what she had. Yes, he was sure she was leaving some aspect out but not what, she also probably wanted something. What exactly did they want with Rin?

“Koga? Are you up here?” A slightly annoyed musical female voice called out.
Koga heard her calling but he didn’t respond. He listened for Ginta and Hokaku to turn her back. They had come and propped him against a tree. It had taken him a very long time to convince them to leave him be and watch from a distance. He was only getting feeling back in his hands now. Damn that Dog. Not only did he take my woman, but to leave me face down in the dirt like that. That pretty boy bastard. He knew things had changed and Kagome was actually safe with Sesshomaru but it didn’t help his mood.
“Koga?” She was closer now.
Where are those two? I do not want Ayame to find me like this. He tried to move his arm. Only a few fingers moved, he could feel his legs now, at least he thought so, but he couldn’t move them at all yet, not even his toes.
“Koga seriously…” She was close now. A few more steps and she would see him. “Why would you use…”
He gritted his teeth and thought it best he say something. Something other than ‘Go away Ayame.’ He’d never hear the end of that one. “I’m here Ayame.”
She came around the corner, one hand delicately holding her nose. Her eyes took in every inch of him, scanning slowly down and up his body.
Ayame seemed to glow in the early dawn light. Her long red hair shone and framing her face. To his wolf eyes, her green eyes glinted with that hidden laugh she used to have when he first realized he loved her. He knew the curve of her mouth as well as the curve of her hip. He knew how well her name suited her, soft and delicate yet strong and resilient. She was always beautiful but there was something about her in this light that made her seem like a goddess from a tale. It seemed one more part of him was awake.
She cocked an eyebrow and smirked. “Well, this is interesting.”
She knelt and leaned slowly into him, bracing her hand on his shoulder, her long hair barely brushing the tip of his erect penis and his chest. Careful not to breath through her nose, she kissed him slowly, deliberately, gradually deepening the kiss until he moaned into her mouth. She pulled away slightly. “If you still feel this way,” she flicked his straining member with a finger causing him to groan “in a few hours, let me know.” Her fingers tightened on a nerve bundle in his shoulder causing him to pass out.
Ginta and Hokaku looked at her with wide eyes when she passed with Koga slumped on her back. “Don’t go any closer than here and don’t let anyone else up there. I’ll be back later, or I will send someone to take care of it. For now, I need to take care of this fool.”
