**********************
InuYasha was restless in the hotel. His newly found nieces and nephews filled his heart with so much adoration he had no idea what to do with it all. Keiko and Eileen liked to brush his hair in the mornings after breakfast, Shikamaru liked to lazily lounge with him in the sun out in the courtyard around a pool, Lua liked to sit and just talk to him; even when he didn’t respond.
The only people to be so accepting of his presence had been his friends. His heart gave a painful twang, he missed them. The lecherous monk, the strong demon slayer and her cat, his young adopted kitsune, and especially Kagome. He figured maybe she was still around, just not here.
His mind wandered on what she had done without him. Probably had a family; a family that was not his family. His eyes burned momentarily and as soon as the sadness settled onto his face, a nephew had found him. “Uncle!”
InuYasha snapped his features back into neutrality, turning his face towards him. “Hn?”
“Are you alright?” Goro stared at him, amber eyes gazing at him with nothing but concern. He was used to thinking anyone who approached had ulterior motives. He wasn’t used to genuine love, and certainly not genuine love from a family member. This all made him bristle with discomfort. His nephew felt it, shifting a little awkwardly away from him.
“I’m perfectly fine, thank you for checking on me,” He awkwardly patted Goro on his upper arm.
Goro looked at him a moment longer, he didn’t believe him. InuYasha knew he didn’t but he didn’t press him further. He gave him a smile after what felt like an eternity under those honeyed, caring eyes. He patted his uncle on his upper arm in return, nodding a little. His short, wavy black hair bounced a little and his hand lingered a moment before he walked away.
How had these children come from his brother? His asshole brother, who could cut you with words as if they were blades. His dickhead brother, who had the emotional range of a melon. His brother, who at the end of their last battle invited him into his home, calling him brother himself.
Things had changed so drastically since he had last been awake. Even his fire rat clothes were incredibly out of place and his family refused to let him put them back on in favor of newer fashions. They kept him in red at least, one of them coming to give him an outfit each morning to wear.
He found his feet carrying him back to his room in thought, bumping full on into a shorter person. There was a yelp from the smaller person, himself giving a grunt as he landed on them. He felt velvet ears against his chin and in complete confusion moved only enough to stare into bright green eyes that were in full shock.
They stared at each other, the smaller demon’s eyes darting around in discomfort. He jumped, realizing he was still laying on top of them and quickly got to his feet. He clumsily offered his hands down, helping the little one up. Zander stared at him, still not sure what had just happened. One second, he had been tending to one of the younger children, delivering some clothing and personal effects and the next he was under the menace from the palace.
“I’m so sorry!” InuYasha squeaked out.
“It’s okay! I’m not hurt!” Zander offered a smile, his cat ears twitching making Inu stare at them in wonder. He didn’t touch, he hated when anyone touched his ears. He saw that tail swishing from the corner of his eye.
They loitered in the hallway a moment, InuYasha transfixed on those fuzzy triangles that made him think so much of his own ears. He knew he wasn’t another half demon, he could feel the full fledged demon’s aura to know better. However, here was someone who visually made him think of himself.
Inky black hair cut off at his shoulders, gently brushing his robes. Large green eyes sat above a buttoned nose and plump pink lips. He was short, his face just in front of InuYasha’s chest. He didn’t radiate strength, but rather gentleness and kindness.
“Lord InuYasha, are you okay?” His voice was so incredibly soft and sugary.
“Lord?” InuYasha’s momentary reverie was broken.
“You are Emperor Sesshomaru’s brother, right?” Zander’s tail twitched again, his arms awkwardly going to his side and gripping the bottom of his uniform shirt.
“Oh, yeah, yeah… I’m fine,” InuYasha nodded, slowly realizing that meant he had garnered some kind of position within this confusing world. Lord seemed strange but he supposed it made sense.
“Can I get you anything?” Zander offered helpfully, more than happy to serve the royal family. He loved his job, honestly truly loved it.
“No, I don’t need anything. You don’t have to worry about me,” InuYasha started moving away from him to escape to his room. He had no idea how to explain his infatuation with those cat ears and he desperately wanted to get away.
“Okay, let me know if you change your mind,” Zander zipped away, his task completed.
‘What the fuck was that?’ InuYasha thought to himself. He watched him leave, the little cat joyfully continuing his way.
He found himself in his room, only able to think about someone like himself. No, not someone like himself, just the only other person he’d met with fuzzy appendages on his head. He now knew what every person who had dared try and touch his head had been feeling, he just wanted to touch them.
InuYasha watched him every time he caught him flitting around the hotel. With the emperor staying with Helaku, he had very little need for his favorite servant. This left Zander open for the whims of the princes and princesses. He knew Sesshomaru trusted him deeply with all his children, in fact he had nannied some of them in their younger years.
Zander knew he followed him with his eyes, and sometimes moved so he could follow him physically. It unnerved him, he’d been the center of attention before with some of the guards. Sesshomaru was always quick to shut it down though, knowing Zander honestly had no interest in most of the men who pursued him.
This was different though, it was like a predator watching its prey. Zander feared what would happen if the hanyou stumbled over him again. He knew he wouldn’t be able to fight him off and his protector wasn’t around the hotel to save him. He only hoped the princes would be as fast as their father to come to his defense if it came down to it. He continued to smile at the new Lord though as he passed him, never losing his pleasantness.
After a few days it finally happened, InuYasha found him alone in the hallway by the laundry as he wandered and just watched. He found himself infatuated with the little cat, trying to back off just enough hopefully he wouldn’t notice. Zander felt the hairs stick out on his neck and he knew, he sighed, hoping the dog wouldn’t come any closer.
He heard him pad closer, his footsteps awkward in shoes. Zander braced himself, he didn’t like being rude but he felt it was about to be needed. The half dog demon slid past him though, and he looked up as a burlier man came closer from the other side. He backed up a little, he’d been so focused on Inu watching him that he hadn’t noticed the other party approaching.
He was coming from the hotel pool, an important man in swimming trunks. He was belligerent as InuYasha approached. The dog had noticed his intentions much faster than Zander had, and he stood between them. He glared him down, the bloated man making his way past them, grumbling about his spoilt plans to grope at the little cat. Inu gave a growl as he walked away, a warning if he were to come back.
Zander looked to him in awe now, maybe the dog watching him wasn’t so bad.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to, I mean,” InuYasha sighed heavily.
“Thanks. I didn’t notice him,” Zander gave the smallest of smiles.
“Feh. Anyone would’ve done it,” InuYasha blushed, rubbing the back of his neck. Oh how he wanted nothing more than to reach out and feel those velvet triangles and he hated himself for it. He hated when people did it to him but was this the struggle they had all had?
“I’m sure they would have, but today you did it, so you deserve thanks,” Zander turned into the laundry room.
“Do you, uh, need any help? I just need something to do,” InuYasha poked his head into the room. Zander was nervous again, having him close.
“Well, if you want to help, Shika asked me to personally wash his blankets because I know how soft he likes them. They’re kinda heavy wet,” He involuntarily pouted. This brought out InuYasha’s dutiful side, the part of him that had strained to keep his ‘pack’ safe so long ago. The part that aimed to please Kagome’s every whim to keep her near him.
Zander opened the washing machine and then stood on his tip toes to open the dryer stacked on top of it. He watched Inu effortlessly move the load of laundry and raised himself back up to shut the door and struggled to reach the buttons. The dog watched just a moment before wordlessly setting his hands on Zander’s hips. The cat froze, his body tensing. He was about to lash out and then mewled helplessly as he was gently lifted to reach the dryer.
He blinked, looking back at him before setting the dryer and starting it. He was lowered back to the ground and the hands moved quickly away from him. There was a blush across Inu’s face and he sat thoughtfully for a second. “Do you want… to help me with my errands?”
InuYasha’s ears perked up, glee lighting up his face. He would absolutely love to help this little man. He nodded, not letting on how eager he was just to spend time with someone who wasn’t one of his adoring family members. Made all the better that it was the little cat demon.
They ran his errands, at the mercy of the kids. Inu admired the way Zander rolled with his day, taking on every new task with a smile. He practically purred with purpose each time he completed a task. At the end of it all, InuYasha felt he had done more work in one day than he would have done in a month.
They sat down in the lobby, Zander waiting for a car to come get him to take him home. It was getting dark outside and InuYasha was watching him again. Zander felt at peace this time, not minding the tawny colored eyes now. “Why do you keep watching me? At first I thought it was arousal or lust maybe but I feel I may have been wrong.”
Inu’s face flushed, “I haven’t been watching you.”
Zander raised a gentle eyebrow, “You have been. I can feel it.”
“Keh, no. You must be mistaken,” Inu argued back.
Zander giggled then, making his face flush. The sound made his ears twitch in wonder, he’d never liked a sound so much. The car pulled up to the doors and Zander got up, walking confidently to the door. “Goodnight, my Lord.”
“Goodnight,” Inu almost pouted. His company was gone. He watched a female cat come out of the car. She looked similar to him and this caught his attention even more. She hugged him, helping him put his bag in the car. He was jealous.
“That’s his sister,” Shika’s voice floated lazily to his ears. He swiveled quickly to see him leaning on the check-in counter. The concierge was getting him something from the back room.
“Hn.” InuYasha was blushing.
“I’m just telling you since you look like you’re pretty interested. He’s an effeminate, more than likely he’ll want a dominant, if he wants anything. I don’t think I’ve ever see him lust after anything,” Shika looked as the small front desk girl brought him extra towels. He took them, winking at her before starting back to his room.
“I don’t know why you’re telling me this,” InuYasha watched the front doors stubbornly.
“Because, you want Zander. You’re not the first, probably won’t be the last, but I’m telling you he hasn’t been interested in anyone that I’ve seen. Also, that was his sister so don’t be jealous when she hugs him, they’re very close,” Shika smiled.
“Keh! I don’t want that cat,” he spit the word unconvincingly.
“Right. Uncle, it’s easier if you just admit what you want. I swing anywhere I’m carried, I like dominants the most but I like submissives and females too. My sisters tell me I’ll fuck anything with a pulse – as much as I tell them I do have standards. I’ve learned to just tell myself honestly what I want or else I’ll be miserable. Ask yourself what you want, and then work towards it,” Shika shrugged.
Inu could admit that even ignoring all the time he’d apparently been sealed to a tree it had been a long time since he’d had a rut. Him and Kagome hadn’t even gone that far, just a few kisses. It had been one of the most sexually frustrating times of his life. There were a lot of nights he had to take care of himself from the safety of a tree. He’d even considered propositioning the pervert monk at one point, thinking a pervert would at least think about it.
He sighed as he looked at Shika, “I don’t see him as a good lay. I just want a companion.”
Shika looked thoughtful for a moment, and he sighed, sitting next to his uncle, “I think that is beautiful. I couldn’t do it, but I’m glad you know what you want.”
“You can’t just have a friend?” InuYasha’s ears laid flat, tilting his head.
“It’s complicated. I don’t trust very well and I like physical contact, so I just… sleep around,” Shika watched Inu from the corner of his eye. He looked so much like his father InuYasha wanted to scoff at him. Those green eyes were the only thing keeping him from calling him an asshole.
“Nothing can be that complicated. You either like someone or you don’t,” InuYasha shrugged.
Shika laughed with derision, so much like his father when he was younger, “I thought I liked someone very much at one point and all that got me was being beaten in the safety of my own home and becoming a single parent when he got caught. Lucky on the last one, I was about 2 hits from a miscarriage. If Helaku hadn’t bust the door down when he did…”
InuYasha looked at his nephew, surprise on his face as he trailed off. The pain in the way his jaw clenched, obviously something he didn’t like to talk about. Inu reached over, gently holding his shoulder in support. Shika looked to him, a hurt he didn’t let out for anybody on his face at talking so freely.
“Uncle, I’m sorry. I’ve spoiled both our evening,” He started to get up. InuYasha’s hand didn’t let him go.
“You’ve ruined nothing, it’s okay. You can’t keep things like that inside. They’ll kill ya, ya know,” Inu got up and took his towels. He walked Shika back to his room.
At his room, Shika walked in quietly. His mind somewhere far away. Two minis came running to him, dancing around his feet. “Mama! Mama!”
A smile graced his lips, and he tossed the towels, grabbing both little boys around their middles and hoisting them up quickly. He kissed their cheeks and their foreheads, laughing as the boys giggled. InuYasha knew he wasn’t feeling better, but he had to have a good face for his boys. “Shikamaru, would you like me to watch them for a bit?”
The two youngest Sesshomaru clones looked to him, excitement lighting up their faces. Shika looked surprised as he froze, the little boys dangling at his sides in his arms. They squirmed free and ran to InuYasha, climbing up his legs and laughing as the man’s eyes got wide in surprise. Shika laughed lightly and shrugged, “I am not opposed if you would like to take the little monsters for a little bit.”
InuYasha nodded, awkwardly grabbing the boys stuck on his waist. He hauled them off to his own room, leaving Shikamaru to sort through his emotions in peace for a little while. It wasn’t long before he was in over his head, two little boys jumping on his bed and asking him for ‘pizza’ and ‘snacks’. He knew they’d had dinner, he knew they didn’t need more food but would Shika be mad if he had someone get them snacks?
He consulted with one of his guardians and the man shrugged. He wasn’t in a position to say what a prince could or couldn’t have. Inu thought a second, “Can you call Zander? I know it’s past his work time.”
Zander was at his room within 30 minutes. The little cat looked at the little princes and scolded them for stressing the poor hanyou, “You know very well you had dinner this evening and you don’t need pizza. I will get you some cheese if you want a snack.”
The little cat stared them down and they pouted. Zander helped Inu watch them until they fell asleep in his bed. He let out a loud sigh and looked at Zander, “Kids today, huh? I thought this would be easy. Teach them to wrestle a little and then they’d relax.”
“Yeah, especially these boys. They want snacks or to play games. You maybe would’ve had Braydon at wrestling, but Benji isn’t so much into that. He’s a gentler boy,” Zander smiled as he stroked their hair lovingly. He loved watching babies, it’s what he’d enjoyed so much when he’d agreed to being a part-time nanny all those years ago.
The two sat quietly, they were comfortable with each other after all the help he’d provided. Zander could now sense his intentions and they were not as other males that had watched him. InuYasha was, dare he say, softer. He was a strong alpha but he didn’t desire his body, he just wanted him to be in his proximity. His tail swished in a relaxed state and they sat and talked until Shika came to retrieve the sleeping pups. He was surprised to see Zander back but he supposed he shouldn’t have been, InuYasha didn’t seem like the pup raising type. He should’ve known when he let his Uncle take his children, but he’d been so thankful for time to himself.
“They were absolute dolls, You’ve done marvelous with them,” Zander smiled as he helped Shika gather the sleeping babes. He left and Zander began collecting this things, readying himself to go see if the hotel had a room he could stay in so he didn’t have to wake his sister.
“Can you, um… stay?” InuYasha looked at him as he walked to the door.
Zander froze, looking back at him. He was starting to think he was wrong but he didn’t sense any amount of arousal from him. He didn’t sense any kind of hostility. His body shook a little and he blushed.
“I’ll sleep in the chair. I don’t really even use the bed. You can have the whole thing I just, don’t want to be alone,” He sighed. He had to know what he wanted, Shika had told him that. That was the only way not to be miserable.
“I don’t think that would be appropriate. Especially for his lord,” Zander’s mouth was dry. He wanted to leave but he also wanted to stay. He felt like he was needed, and that was his whole deal.
InuYasha nodded, relenting easily, “Yeah, you’re probably right. That was stupid. Goodnight, Zander.”
Zander opened the door and looked back at him. He had sat on the chair, leaning his head back and shut his eyes. He walked back in the door, shutting it and sighed. He crawled onto the bed, making Inu look to him incredulously.
“Don’t think because I am small, I am powerless. If you are inappropriate with me, I will cause harm to you,” Zander threatened him.
Inu looked to him, his eyes still wide and nodded in understanding. He couldn’t imagine the little cat causing him much damage but he didn’t want to find out either. They went to bed, InuYasha’s heart beginning to feel a little more at peace.
