Kagome took a bite from one of the candies; it was pure bliss. Kouga wasn't aware of Kagome's sweet tooth, but learned quickly while watching the satisfied
look on her face. "Take some Kouga.....mmm...they are SO good!"
He chuckled and popped one in his mouth. She was right, the delicatnfecnfections were fantastic!
He noticed that she kept glancing at the other bags. He held out a tiny silk envelope, no bigger than his palm to her, "what is it?" Kagome asked.
"Look inside and find out."
She opened the flap and pulled out a small card that read "I Love You" and a bracelet made of Jade beeds and white pearls. The sunlight form the air holes in
the ceiling made them glisten. "Does this have a subduing spell too?"
Kouga laughed and shook his head, "No, I promise, no more subduing spells! I just thought this would look good on you." He circled the bracelet around her
wrist and fastened the clasp. Kagome was at a loss for words 'How should I feel about him now? Life was so much easier when he was being a jerk, but now
he's trying so hard to win my approval....'
"I have more gifts for you..." he started to unwrap the bag when her petite hand touched his wrist, "Wait Kouga.... you don't have to do this. It's very nice of
you to want to apologize but all the gifts in the world can't make a woman love you."
"I know....... but you will need these as the cold weather gets here. I bought you four kimonos, eight wraps (AN: light weight "under" kimonos made of cotton
for added warmth. I'm not sure what the actual name for them is.), wool socks and a cloak." Kouga held up two of the kimonos, "What do you think?"
"Um... they look fine Kouga." Kagome wasn't used to wearing this type of garment and secretly dreaded it!
"I wasn't sure about the colors. I took the darker ones so they wouldn't get as many stains on them." he didn't know what to do next "How would you like to
help me make dinner? I'd like to prove to you that I can cook, since you don't see as a potential mate yet."
"Don't females usually prove their domestic skills to males, not the other way around?"
"Actually love, since you are not the typical female, I am willing to stray from tradition and alter our courting a little. How did you know about that anyway?"
Kouga was curious and wondered what else she knew.
She watched Kouga fill the cooking pot with water and stir in spices, "Aika told me."
"Oh..... so.... what else did you two talk about?"he asked.
"Just girl things ............. and about her pup. I can't wait to see if she has a boy or a girl. Who will be with Aika when she gives birth?"
Kouga handed her a knife and some carrots to chop, "Chuugi will be by her side and maybe some of her friends from the pack, along with a midwife. I spoke to
her mate today, he's beside himself with fear and anticipation. We have all heard females scream during birth, it's a sound of extreme pain, but the sounds of a
pups first cries are heart warming and unforgettable."
Kagome could see all the love in his eyes as he turned to her "There is nothing that can compare to the smell and softness of a new born pup, or the way their
tiny hands and fingers reach out to grasp onto you for security. A pup is unconditional love and the beginning of a new generation." His voice trailed off.
He seemed to be lost in his thoughts, "Do you really want to be a father Kouga?" Kagome almost whispered the question, not knowing why it mattered, she
just had to know.
This wasn't the Kouga she was used to talking to. His arrogant facade was melting away to reveal a softness she never thought possible. He slowly brought
himself out of the memories of past births in his pack.
Lust and love shined in his eyes as he tenderly wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead. Kagome's question didn't require any deliberation on
his part, "I want puppies as much as I want you to be my mate Kagome."
After dinner they went outside to sit with the other wolves and pack members. They watched the sunset and talked about events, both past and present.
Kagome watched as parents carried their young ones inside for bedtime.
As the sun dipped behind the hills and her last rays of light passed over the land, Kagome yawned and stretched. Kouga smiled at her and excused them.
Once inside the cave, Kouga handed Kagome her pajamas and went to change his clothes. In that short span of time, she fell asleep.
Kouga sat next to her and admired the strong beauty before him. 'I wonder if you'll ever love me the way that I love you?' Kouga leaned over and kissed her
cheek and whispered in her ear, "I promise to respect you, love you and always take care of you Kagome, just don't leave me. If you ever go away, my world
would come to an end. I would wish for death and hope to be reborn as someone you hold dear."
The wolf prince crawled under the covers beside her. He pulled his pillow so close to hers that their noses almost touched. Kouga took a deep breath, inhaling
her scent and reveling in the pureness of it. The smell of wild berries and lavender surrounded them. All he wanted to do was stay awake and watch her sleep,
but as the night wore on, his eyes grew heavy and eventually he drifted of to sleep.

Sango sat outside looking at the stars with a sleeping Kirara in her lap. She took off the bandage and inspected the cat demons injured paw.
Earlier that week Kaede had sent Sango to gather herbs near a briar patch. Sango warned Kirara not to go in there, but curiosity won and she climbed through
the tangled branches and vines to explore this unmarked area.
Sango heard a shrill cry as Kirara came limping out with a long thorn protruding from her paw. When the thorn was taken out, Sango noticed that cat's paw
was swelling and her body felt warmer than usual.
Kaeda explained that cat demons were less resistant to this particular type of poisonous thorn than other youkai. So with a swollen paw and a high fever,
Kirara was restricted from shard hunting until she made a full recovery.
Her fingers worked trough the cats short fur as she stared up at the sky.
"Why aren't you asleep?" A manly voice asked from behind her.
Sango's head whipped around to see who had snuck up on her, "Houshi-sama, don't scare me like that!" She held the front of her robes, half to make sure they
didn't fall open and half to clutch at her racing heart. "I can't sleep. I'm worried about Kagome and Inuyasha. We haven't seen him for a few days."
"Inuyasha is an adult. If he chooses to stay in the forest instead of here, then that's his decision. He can take care of himself, but why are you worried about
Kagome?" Miroku looked at her hoping to make eye contact.
"I'm worried because something just isn't right Houshi. Call it woman's intuition if you want, but I can sense that she needs us. I wish we could go through the
well and check on her." Sango continued to look at the sky.
"Your concern is admirable but uncalled for. Kagome is home, safe, with her family and by this time next week she will return with those strange male bashing
mah-ga-zhines that you two enjoy reading so much."
His eyes were narrowed with annoyance as he remembered some of the articles written about men and and their bad habits. "I personally see nothing wrong
with a mans need to scratch himself. If a woman has an itch she scratches it, so why can't a man?"
"That's different! Women don't walk around all day scratching their butts, or worse, their private areas! Eewww!" Sango continued to rub Kirara's fur as she
cast Miroku a disgusted side ways glance.
A gentle breeze blew her long coal colored hair away from her face to display soft features. Miroku felt the heat of desire course through his blood. It was as
though nature itself was trying to tempt him with this woman. He knew that his feelings for Sango went far beyond grouping and the flirtatious passes he made
at her. She was that special someone that he wanted to share his life with.
"So why are you out here houshi?" Sango looked him straight in the eye, time itself froze around them and she lost the ability to look away.
Miroku's dark blue eyes held hers in place, "My mind cannot rest and will not grant me sleep. I keep thinking about the future and what will happen when the
jewel is fully restored."
Miroku reached for her hand and held it between his own, caressing her slightly calloused skin. Sango has the hands of a fighter, of a woman who has not had
an easy life. That roughness would drive most men away, but some people shine so bright from within, that their beauty cannot be ignored. The demon slayer
was one of these people.
The monk shifted to his knees, making the distance between him and the demon slayer grow dangerously close. In this position he sat much taller than her,
forcing her to look up.
"Do you plan on returning to your old home Sango?" the monk gazed at her, almost dreading her response.
Sango gulped, her throat felt tight and she didn't know what to say, "I'm... not sure...yet."
He placed her hand over his heart, "Have you considered staying with me?"
She was taken back by his question and tried to pull her hand free. The movement woke Kirara who jumped off Sango's lap and lazily walked back toward
Kaede's home.
Miroku refused to let go, "Don't reject me Sango, not this time. I need .... we need to discuss our feelings for each other. I am tired of trying to figure out if
you like me or hate me."
Sango cut him short, "You don't make that easy monk. How should I know what to feel about a man who gropes and asks every woman he sees to bear his
child? Honestly, I haven't given you or the future much thought. Who knows if we will even survive the final battle with Naraku."
Miroku sighed, still holding her hand, "Stay positive Sango. Naraku's heart is filled with darkness and despair, don't let your heart resemble his in any way." he
cu her her chin and used his thumb to trace her bottom lip, "I'm sorry for my behavior. I didn't mean to push you away by pawing at those other women. If I
promised to stop, would you consider marrying me when all of this is over."
Sango felt the air slam out of her lungs. He proposed to her the way most people would ask if you wanted to take a walk or go swimming.... or some other
casual activity. His expression was serious and she knew he was waiting for an answer.
Uncertainty took hold of her mind, causing any coherent thoughts to jumble and words become inaccessible, "I....... we........ maybe if ....... um......"
Tears of frustration and doubt gathered in her eyes. Sango stood in one swift motion, nearly knocking Miroku over and freeing her hand at the same time. At
the last moment, just before she was out of reach, he grabbed her arm am forcefully pulled her to the ground.
The falling sensation made her dizzy. A strong arm looped across demontersters back before it could hit the ground, as weight heavier than her own pressed
her body to the earth.
Once her eyes focused, she found a pair of dark blue orbs peering down at her. Miroku looked hurt by her lack of response and attempt to run, "I asked you
not to reject me Sango. Should I assume that your reaction to my request for marriage is a flat out 'NO' or do you need time to think about it?"
"You don't love me Miroku. Just because you promise to change doesn't mean you will be able to control your urges. I have accepted that being a lech comes
natural to you, but if we were to marry and you broke our vows, I couldn't live with that."
She could see the mixture of sadness and determination roll across his face, "I understand your fears, but I won't take no for an answer Sango. Out of all the
women I have approached in the past have I ever asked any of them to marry me or even spend more than an evening with me? Have I ever done this.." His
lips pressed against hers in a forceful, passion filled kiss that caused an unfamiliar heat to pulse throughout her body.
'Fight your desire, you know he'll only hurt you!' Sango's mind screamed for her to pull away. Using all her strength, she flipped him over her body. His back
impacted the ground with an audible thump. Groaning and a little disoriented, Miroku managed to tilt his head back to see an upside down Sango standing
over him.
A lecherous grin crept over his face, "Enchanting, resourceful and ferocious! What a woman!"
"WHAT?! Are you insane or have all those "attitude adjusters" a.k.a. slaps finally knocked your brain loose?" Through those angry words, her pain showed.
"That was no ordinary kiss, it was the kiss of true love. I saved it for the only woman that has ever held my heart"
'I can't let him see I how feel....' "I'm so sure monk. How many other woman have you told that line to?"
"Don't take my words lightly . It is true that I have kissed my fare share of pretty females in the past, but I have never loved any of them. I'll never give up on
you Sango. I see you for the woman you are and I love your inner fire. One day, you will be my wife."
Sango kept her back straight, shoulders squared and face with a firm expression, "What you really mean to say is 'you will be my wife until someone better
comes along, then you will be forgotten'. I'm no fool houshi, I know how men are. All my life they have looked past me for some helpless, delicate flower!"
anger and hurt churned behind her brown orbs, "I was always the one standing alone when my village had dances; the men wouldn't dance with me! They saidwas was more of a man than a woman and would never be a wife! How was I supposed to know what to wear and do girl things like apply face powder?! There
was no one to teach me such things! Even the other girls avoided me, it was like I had the damn plague or something!" her shoulders shook with pent up
emotions as she continued to rant, "When my mother died, I wanted nothing more than to bring my family honor and please my father, hoping to make him
proud of me! That is why I became a demon slayer and because I was smart and strong willed, I was shunned."
The animosity she now directed toward him was very uncomfortable as her past wounds resurfaced, " I have seen the type of women you approach, they are
the same as the woman in my village; the perfect little beauties in their silky kimonos who giggle and blush when a man approaches them. So please do not
speak such loving words to me when I know they can't be true! In time, you will forget me and marry another, I will be a thing of the past." Sango's chin tilted
toward her chest in an attempt to hide the rising tears. In a hushed tone she made one request, "Please houshi, we can be friends, but don't speak to me of love
or marriage ever again."
Her feet pounded hard against the ground as she ran from him. The display of weakness that the monk witnessed brought her shame. 'I will never be able to
look him in the eye after this..... he must think I am such a fool.'
Miroku watched as she fled back to Kaede's hut. Her words echoed in his mind. 'Such pain. I never knew Sango suffered so much.'
His next words, although spoken out loud, were only heard by the night sky and surrounding forest, "I promise to heal your wounds Sango. From this
moment, until the day you die, you will know nothing but love."
******************************************************************************
Unknown to Sango, her return to Kaede's home was witnessed by a curious little youkai who was very good at turning himself into hedges.
It was easy for his nose to pick up the salty smell of her tears, no mater how hard she tried to hide them. With a POP he was transformed back to his original self.
He wondered what upset her so much and was tempted to ask, when the monk made his entrance, 'Hmph.... I should have known........ Maybe one day I'll use
an illusion spell that will make him think his dick felf!' f!' Shippo gripped his sides laughing. To watch the lecherous monk in a total panic while trying to find
his precious manhood would be a priceless site! ' That would be too funny!'
Shippo knew about Sango's worries and what happened days ago disturbed his young mind. The combination of multiple scents, strong magic and something
else ............. it was that something the he just couldn't quite place. That's what disturbed him the most.
It almost smelled like Kagome .... but, not quite, no, this was something else, another scent that mixed with hers. 'I should have told Sango and Miroku more,
but I didn't want to worry them. What if I am wrong? If Kagome did go through the well then I would have caused everyone a lot of concern over nothing. It's
not impossible that other smells would be around the well, after all, it's in the forest. People and animals go past there all the time.'
The little youkai decided to walk to the well and investigate further. 'I'll check to see if any traces of those scents are still in the area. I'm guessing that since
the ground has dried some from the last time I was here, I might be able to find out more. Perhaps that will put my mind at ease.' Shippo scampered off, 'pe
pe
I find some answers this time. All this stress and worry is gonna make me old before my time!'
His destination was now visible in the small clearing ahead. The well looked just as dilapidated as always. Vines grew up and crisscrossed it aged surface. The
essence of an ancient magic and damp earth encompassed the area like always.
This scent comforted the kitsune as his memories brought images of Kagome climbing out with her large bag that held tasty goodies and surprises. She always
hugged him first, just like his mom used to.
'Mom and Dad. I miss you both so much." Shippo sniffled as he climbed onto the rim of the well, staring down in the void, 'Kagome is the closest thing I have
to a mom.'
He used his little claws to wipe his eyes. 'I have to be strong. If Kagome were here she would tell me to believe in myself and try my best, and that's exactly
what I am gonna do.'
With a new found determination, Shippo jumped down and started to sniff the ground. The first scent he found was Kagome's, directly in front of the well. 'Is
that salt I smell? It's kinda like how Sango smelled when she came back to Kaede's. Hmm.... Inuyasha has been here too... that's no surprise'
From all the damp autumn weather and odor from the falling leaves, the scents were very difficult to decipher, but he kept trying. Shippo parted the leaves and
circled the well heading toward the edge of the forest. His nose bumped a small rock about the size of his fist, ' What's that smell.... (sniff, sniff)....Inuyasha?
But... that doesn't tell me much... He did walk her here, I wonder if Miroku was right about them arguing before she left? That would explain the salty smell.'
He followed a path into the forest that lined up with the rock, but there was nothing else.
Shippo kicked the leaves with fox feet and continued looking around the land that surrounded the well. There wasn't much besides the usual markings of
wildlife and lower youkai.
While he was walking toward the farthest edge of the clearing, the kitsune noticed some tall weeds and underbrush that was nearly flattened out. It appeared
that something wide and heavy moved walked through this spot and into the forest.
'Why didn't we see this before?' Shippo wondered. Most people would have payed no attention to this, but to someone who was used to tracking other
creatures, it was similar to a red warning light.
Being a kitsune meant learning to hunt at an early age. Shippo's father started to teach his son many valuable lessons to insure his survival. His death by the
hands of the Thunder Brothers ended his teachings, but Shippo remembered enough to keep himself alive before finding Kagome and Inuyasha.
Shippo approached the area in question cautiously, so to not disturb any evidence. His sensitive kitsune nose inhaled every possible marker that could provide
him information. He climbed the tree trunks with the grace of a cat as he smelled the bark and surrounding leaves.
The aroma of lavender was so faded, he could hardly detect it. "Kagome!!" Shippo cried out loud, "That smells like Kagome's shampoo!"
In one swift movement Shippo jumped from the side of the tree and propelled himself deeper into the forest, frantically searching for any other traces of her.
As he searched the ground and surrounding vegetation for any other signs, he found something unexpected and frightening.
Shippo's eyes went wide and all movement ceased. Realization was a slap in the face for the young kitsune. "No..... it can't be ....." The new scent that
teasingly intertwined with Kagome's, lingering just on the edge of the lavender and sunshine that identified her, was none other than..... Kouga.
