A/N: The wait is over! A new chapter as promised. I want to thank you all for your patience with me during this epic wait and for all of your support over the years. In case you don’t follow all of my stories, I currently have a GoFundMe campaign set up to help me pay for my much needed sinus surgery later this month. It can be found in my profile and I appreciate any help that can be given so that I don’t have to postpone.
I can’t promise super regular updates to this story at this time, due to my sinus issues. The headaches, pressure, and dizziness tend to wear me out, but 81 is already six pages in. Do not expect epically long chapters like the late 70s. They will be, on average, 10 pages long. No more 20 pages, as that’s what burned me out on the story before.Chapter 80 – The Heart of the MatterKagome sighed and rested her head on the cool table, trying to ignore the roar of the students gathered in the cafeteria. The math exam had been brutal, and her brain felt like an overripe banana that someone was giving a tight squeeze. She intended to look over her notes for the coming health exam, but she just couldn't focus. She knew she bombed her math final, and she couldn't help but worry that the score would be so low that she wouldn't get credit for the class at all, despite all the assignments she managed to make up. She felt it really didn't matter anymore, because if the choice were left to her, she would not be staying in her birth era and attending college once everything was said and done. She did still feel she owed it to her family not to fail, and didn't think she was doing the best job of it at the moment, but she'd tried and that was all her mother really expected of her.She ignored the sound of someone slipping into the seat next to her, but a warm, gentle voice caught her attention."You okay, Higurashi? You don't look so good."The miko lifted her head to study the male sitting on her right. He looked familiar and, after a moment of thought, she remembered. This was the boy who complimented her skimpy outfit and 'tattoos' at the mall, the one Sesshoumaru had wanted to disembowel for daring to look at her, let alone commenting. What had her friends said his name was?"Kyo?" she asked quietly, not entirely sure that she was recalling it correctly. He couldn't help but smirk. At least she remembered his name this time. When she hadn't had a clue who he was on Sunday, it left his pride smarting something fierce. He was the most popular boy in school! He didn't think it was possible for anyone to not know who he was, but then, she wasn't actually at school all that often. He could forgive the lapse of memory. He wanted her far too badly to give up just because she didn't recognize him at first. Once he was done with her, she would never forget him. He would make sure of that."You not eating lunch?" he asked in a concerned tone. It wasn't even fake, not really. He'd been interested in Kagome for far too long to not care about her at all. Yes, he wanted more than anything to find his way between her thighs, but she was something special, something unique, and he doubted that once with her would be enough. No, he wanted to hang onto the beauty before him for a while. He wouldn't be able to do so without being in some kind of relationship with her. He had known that all along, and so he allowed her to wiggle her way into his heart, which was why he was so damned upset when he saw her with another male. He hadn't expected it to hurt quite as much as it did."No," she replied weakly, not really in the mood for a conversation. "I'm just tired. Not feeling up to standing in line."Again, a smirk graced his lips. "I'll be right back."Kagome raised a brow in confusion as he rose and disappeared into the crowded cafeteria. After a moment, she shrugged and tried once more to skim over her notes. She was surprised when he set a tray down in front of her, piled high with food. He even remembered drinks, as she spotted both a soda and a small carton of chocolate milk."Kyo?" she asked, stunned."You're health is far too delicate for you to be missing meals because you're too tired to stand in line." When she looked as if she was going to protest, instantly thinking that this was such a Hojo thing to do, he shook his head. "I already got the food. It's right here in front of you. Don't let it go to waste. You need a good meal before the next exam."Again, the miko looked confused. Since when did this guy care about anything other than how she looked in a rather embarrassingly skimpy outfit? And how in the hell had he made it through the line so fast? After a moment, she decided she didn't care. She really was hungry, having missed breakfast because of the morning news and the discovery that her blood on Hojo’s knife had been tested and found to be dog’s blood. She needed to eat and who was she to pass up free food?In reality, he simply shoved his way to the front of the line, using his popularity as a weapon, as he knew no one would dare complain about his actions. It never dawned on him that the sweet creature that Kagome was wouldn't approve of such behavior. He didn't know her nearly as well as he thought he did, but then, neither did anyone else, not anymore. Not since she had been dragged to the Feudal Era for the first time."Umm, thanks," she said softly, sitting up completely and pulling the tray closer to look over her options. She slid her notes to the side, out of the way, and noticed as his eyes flitted over the words on the page."No problem. So, your health exam is next, huh? It sure was an interesting quarter, wasn't it? A hell of a lot more interesting than studying the skeletal system and memorizing the names of all those bones."Realizing just what he was referring to as interesting, the miko's cheeks flushed pink. "I guess," she replied, unsure of how to talk to this guy, who was virtually a stranger to her, about Sex-Ed. She could barely talk to Sesshoumaru about anything intimate. She spent the entire time she studied for the exam with her friends fighting down her embarrassment, and they were her best friends in this era. No, she didn't know how to talk to Kyo, and she really didn't care to, either. She wasn't interested. Of course, he didn't see things quite that way.Oh, the desire to stand and announce his victory to the entire student body was nearly overwhelming. The way she blushed at just the slightest reference to something sexual assured him that she was still innocent. That 'boyfriend' of hers, and he used the term loosely, hadn't managed to worm his way into her panties yet. Yes, she allowed him to kiss her, and he even grabbed her ass, but she hadn't given herself to him.He always wanted to be her first. Sure, she wouldn't be his, but that didn't matter. The girls he had been with in the past hadn't meant a thing to him, but Kagome... He had been fantasizing about taking her virginity for years now, ever since she started developing that gorgeous rack of hers. No, his experiences with other females meant nothing but exactly that: experience. He knew what he was doing, and he fully intended to rock her world. The fact that her man, the guy that all the girls in school were still talking about dreamily, hadn't succeeded in popping that cherry meant that, at the very least, she wasn't in love with him. He was worried she might be too attached to her silver-haired freak to be drawn away, but if she hadn't spread her legs for him, he definitely still had a chance. He also had a bit of a leg up in the competition her boyfriend didn't even know he was in with him. The tattoo-faced male couldn't be with her during school hours since he wasn't a student. He had the opportunity to draw her attention, at the very least, during their lunch period every day from now through Friday, and he was going to use every possible moment to his advantage. By the time the party rolled around Friday night, she would already be leaning his direction. When Momoko's plan to break them up came to fruition, Kagome would fall into his arms easily, as she would already trust him. Yes, this weekend was going to be the best of his life so far.So caught up in his own thoughts was Kyo that he didn't realize just how much time he was wasting. Kagome had watched him for a few moments, wondering just where his head was, before she decided she didn't care and focused on enjoying the free lunch. While biting into a hamburger, the thought that she wished the meat were rarer flitted through her mind, which surprised her. She never liked her meat rare. Cutting into something on her dinner plate and watching it bleed creeped her the hell out, though, maybe that had changed. Really, something had to have changed for her interest in Sesshoumaru's blood the previous afternoon to happen at all, let alone be so strong. It seemed like everything was changing in her life and it was all happening so fast! From the moment the taiyoukai had landed in her path and asked for her help in saving his sons, her world had been turned entirely upside-down. She couldn't bring herself to mind, however. Her soul was whole again. Her relationship with Inuyasha was finally untwisted, clearly identified, and understood. She learned that she wasn't such a screw up after all; that everything she had done in the Feudal Era had occurred just the way it was supposed to. She now knew her father was alive and awaiting her arrival. She picked up eight children that loved her, and Shippo finally knew for sure just how much she loved him in return. She was suddenly mother to all of them. The best part, however, was Sesshoumaru. He was her Sakimitama, she was certain, but that wasn't all. She had begun to believe that he was her reward, her gift from the gods in thanks for all of her suffering, all the pain and struggles she survived and would continue to face thanks to their will, their plans. He was everything she ever dreamt of and more; even though she never in a million years would have guessed that she would end up with the Aristocratic Assassin. Just as she had a gift to give to each of the four parts of her heart, fate had given her one, as well. The shrill sound of the bell ringing snapped both Kagome and Kyo out of their individual thoughts. The miko winced at the volume and mentally cursed. She hadn't gotten in a moment of actual studying, but at least she managed to fill her stomach. The miko rose to her feet and gathered her things, pausing for just a moment to thank the male who supplied her meal once more, before slipping away. The sooner she started her health final exam, the sooner it would be over, and she would be back in Sesshoumaru's arms again.~ SWtPF~Kagura was certain she had never flown so fast before in her rather short life. Though she hoped the severe and quite intimate injury she gave Naraku would keep him from giving chase, she still feared that he was on her tail. She went further and further while flying higher and higher until she was certain he could no longer follow if he was, indeed, coming after her, and neither could the Saimyosho, before slowing to catch her breath.Where should she go? Where could she hide? Whom could she trust? It wasn't as if she had any allies. She never had a friend, never someone she could trust.'Kohaku.'The boy's name whispered through her mind and guilt filled her. She hadn't intended to do what she did. It wasn't planned. She just couldn't take it any longer and, when an opportunity presented itself, she took it. Now, however, Kohaku was alone in the very den of evil with that monster. What would Naraku do now that she was gone? She had served as his errand girl for so long. She was the one that carried Kohaku where he was needed to complete the tasks assigned to him. Now the dark hanyou would have to do it himself. If he wanted to taunt Inuyasha's pack, he could no longer simply send her out with messages. If he wanted the mountain witch to make him another tainted shard, he would have to go to collect her and then gather all the necessary ingredients on his own.Yes, he had a few hanyou servants in the dilapidated castle he claimed as his home base, but none of them were very strong or very skilled. Certainly none of them could fly as she could. They couldn't control the wind, nor could they reanimate the dead. They probably wouldn't even make it from the castle to Inuyasha's Forest alive if he did try to send them to complete some mission of his. No, Naraku would no longer be able to pass the day-to-day tasks of being a villain off on someone else.Even if he did manage to locate the panthers on his own, it was very unlikely that they would agree to take her place and follow his instructions blindly. No, they wouldn't be bossed around, temporary alliance or not, and she doubted that her former master would dare to try. He needed them for whatever plan he devised, and he wouldn't be so stupid as to sour the relationship before they completed the task for which he had initially enlisted them.He couldn't even send out his puppets without a great deal more effort. He could no longer sit in the dark and stare into his chunk of the Shikon jewel. He would actually have to do things. He would have to summon the hoards of lesser demons that so often fought his battles for him on his own. He would have to be a great deal closer to wherever he intended to parade around or find someone willing to transport the little wooden doll that he used in his puppetry. He would have to get off his ass and work if he wanted anything to happen. It was a delightfully amusing thought, and Kagura couldn't keep the smile off her face.Sure, he could always make a new incarnation, and she supposed that he might do just that now that he found himself almost completely on his own. He never had been one to get his hands dirty. It was easier to create pawns from his own flesh, or enslave the weak-minded, and force them to do his bidding. The spoiled spider-hanyou would not be happy when it all occurred to him as it had to her. Once the pain faded and the anger cooled, he would figure out that he needed her much more than he thought.Kagura chuckled darkly. "Should have been nicer to me, you sick fuck," she said aloud, thrilled to be able to speak her mind without fear of being overheard. Even if her words happened to make their way back to that dark place, he no longer had the means to punish her for it.The wind witch sighed as she floated in her boat-like feather, high above the clouds, considering her options. She wished she could go back for Kohaku, but she would never make it alone. Besides, he was still able to absorb information about the hanyou's plans, as they intended for him to do. They would just have to figure out a way for him to pass on that important intel.Thoughts of how she might contact the boy without being caught slowly led to another realization, and she cursed under her breath. The scroll! The scroll she had stolen from the mountain witch's lair that spoke of the destruction of the great evil was still hidden away somewhere in Kohaku's room. Now she wouldn't be able to figure out all that it said. She wouldn't be able to take it to the miko as an offering of peace in the hopes of gaining her trust. She still needed to speak with the panthers and find out what Naraku had enlisted them to do, as well as if they intended to actually do so. She could not allow them to attack Inuyasha's pack, if that was the plan, not only because she knew that Kagome and Sesshoumaru would be the ones to finally kill the twisted monster she no longer served, but because the panthers had been kind to her, and she didn't want to see them slaughtered if it was avoidable. Yes, the five youkai were strong and stealthy, but the taiyoukai of the West was stronger and had a great deal to fight for, to protect. They would never survive if they attempted to attack that particular group. She also needed to see what they intended to do with the shards Naraku had given them. Something had to be done. Somehow, the genuine but tainted sliver had to be separated from the poisoned imposters and the sick spell dealt with. Only Kagome could do so, she was sure of it. Only the Shikon miko would be able to tell the difference. Only she would be able to purify away the darkness and foul intent it had been imbued with. She needed to go to the panthers, but not yet. She had time still, before their task was to be completed, and she was wary of returning so close to the spider's hiding place so soon after her attack on him. But where to hide until then? How she wished she could join the miko's pack. They would keep her safe. They would keep her alive. Too bad they didn't trust her. After a great deal of thought, Kagura decided to head deep into the Western Lands. If there was anyone Naraku feared, it was Sesshoumaru, and so she figured she couldn't find a safer place than where he believed the Killing Perfection was. The spider hanyou wouldn't dare wander around the West in search of her, and the Western army and palace guards were more than capable of taking out any flying spies he sent into the area. Yes, she would be safe there, so long as she could find a place to hide.~ SWtPF~The girl sighed and slung her purse over her shoulder, making her way out the double doors and down a few steps towards the sidewalk. Yesterday afternoon she was so caught up with her plan, along with her outrage that Kagome dared pull her hair, that Momoko had forgotten all about her need to go to the clinic until nearly dinnertime. Kyo's short and upsetting visit certainly hadn't helped her recollection, but she still couldn't believe that she had forgotten something so important. She had rushed there only to learn that they closed even earlier than she thought. She had to take a bus to get there, which had taken forever, and she knew she would have to try something else if she ever wanted to get that blood test and be sure if she was really pregnant or not.It was the kind of place where you showed up, signed in, and then had to wait indefinitely to be seen. The earlier she got there, the earlier she would know, and so she checked the bus schedule carefully, discovering that if she left school just ten minutes early and hurried to the bus stop, she could make it to the clinic with time to spare. She would just skip school entirely and go first thing in the morning, but even she couldn't skip final exams. No amount of flirting with the teachers while flashing her cleavage would make up for such a huge loss of points. She wasn't the best student, not even a decent one really, but she managed to keep her grades above failing. Her mother was far too busy to have to deal with her disappointment of a daughter failing classes and having to repeat a grade, and Momoko really didn't want to give her another reason to be disappointed. What she was dealing with at the moment would be bad enough. She walked swiftly towards the bus stop, and her future, only to slow as she noticed silver hair in the distance. She quickly realized that it was Kagome's hunk of a boyfriend, on his way to pick the obnoxious girl up from school. Momoko continued on her way, heading towards the male she had every intention of stealing away for her own, glad the bus stop was in the same direction. She was aching to see him, to talk to him again. She needed time alone with the silver-haired Adonis, time to let him know that she was available, ready, and waiting. There was no way Kagome was keeping him satisfied in bed, no way in hell. The girl was too much of a goodie-goodie to handle someone like him. No, he needed a girl with experience, a girl willing to give it her all, to try new things, to give him whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted it. She wanted to be that girl. She was convinced that it would be easy to take him from the girl she hated with every fiber of her being. If she could get inside his head now, plant the idea that he could have her, then by Friday night, he would be hers. The distance between them was shrinking quickly, and she could finally see him clearly. He had that sexy, confident swagger that absolutely made her melt, and she felt her body heating up at just the sight of him. Forgetting all about the clinic, she started thinking of just how to word her invitation to the party between her thighs. She noticed that she wasn't the only one watching him and jealousy bubbled up inside her. No one else could have him! He would be hers and hers alone! She froze mid-step as she saw another woman approach the sexy beast whose name she still didn't know, and watched as she handed him a small piece of paper. When he slipped it in his pocket and kept walking, she could have cried with joy. It was perfect! Just fucking perfect! He didn't tell that stranger that he had a girlfriend or that he wasn't interested. Instead, he accepted her number and kept it! Oh, Kagome would be devastated by this information, and she wanted to be there to see it. She really wanted to be the bearer of bad news.Momoko slipped behind a shop door, waiting until he passed before following a short distance behind. She would wait with him, though of course he wouldn't know that she was there, until Kagome showed up. Then she was going to break the little bitch's heart. She wouldn't even be able to deny it, because the evidence was right there in his pocket! This was going to be absolutely epic, and she found herself wishing that someone was around to record it. She really wanted to be able to watch, over and over again, as Kagome's heart shattered in her eyes.~ SWtPF~Sesshoumaru fought down the desire to sigh as yet another woman approached him and gave him a paper with numbers on it. He forgot all about them yesterday and hadn't gotten to ask Kagome what they were or what they meant. Who could blame him, with the catfight, the mysteriously appearing claws and fangs, and Kagome's interest in his blood? It wasn't a surprise that it had slipped his mind.He stuffed the scrap in his pocket and walked away, ignoring the female's whisper of 'Call me'. He had no idea what she wanted him to call her, or how, but he wasn't interested. If he was going to call her anything, it would have been a whore, approaching an unknown male and flirting as she had. He didn't know what was wrong with these human females, but it didn't matter much to him. His little human female was the only one that mattered and, in just a few minutes, he would have his miko in his arms again. The taiyoukai leaned against the low wall surrounding the school grounds, hoping that today he could collect her without incident. Not that he hadn't enjoyed watching Kagome defend her claim; it had been incredibly sexy, but it worried him all the same. Something strange was happening to her that actually frightened him.More than once now, he had seen her lose control until he wasn't even sure if she was his Kagome anymore. There was the incident in her room when she referred to herself as a bitch and his beast had slipped free, dominating her. She fell unconscious that time, and the time after, when Hojo had his arm wrapped around her, dragging her down the hallway. Her eyes then, and the viciousness of her growls, made him question if she didn't have inu blood in her after all, besides his own, of course. Then yesterday, he was certain that if he hadn't stopped her, that whore that had dared touch him would have received some serious claw-inflicted wounds. He calmed her just as if she were an inu female. But what did it all mean? How he wished her mother would explain things, but the elder Higurashi female was locked up tight. She wasn't giving a thing away before it was time, and apparently, it wasn't time, so he was going to have to figure this thing out on his own.The sound of the bell ringing drew him from his thoughts, and he turned his attention towards the doors he knew his sweet miko would be exiting. They had only been apart for a few hours, but it felt like ages, and he ached to lay eyes on her, was dying for a nose full of her scent, and the desire to wrap his arms around her was like nothing he ever experienced before. Oh yes, this girl was definitely it. She was his, made for him, and he knew that he would fight like hell to keep her safely by his side. No one would come between them. No one would tear them apart. He had no idea that a few yards away, someone was waiting to do just that.~ SWtPF~Kagome hummed to herself on her way outside, her bag a great deal lighter than it had been that morning. She would never have to see those textbooks again, and that was something worth celebrating. Sure, she had probably bombed the math exam, but she knew she didn't stand a chance in hell of doing well. Math was something you had to learn gradually, not something you could just cram in your head over a few hours and then forget it all once the test was over. Math was her enemy and it had royally whooped her ass, but she was pretty sure she aced her health exam. It had seemed almost ridiculously easy and the correct answers just jumped right off the page at her. One out of two wasn't too bad considering just how little school she actually attended. She was thinking about just how she might celebrate that partial victory with her sexy taiyoukai as she spotted him across the courtyard. Thankfully, the school slut was nowhere in sight. If she caught her hanging on her man again, blood would have been spilled. She wanted to break that bitch's nose, badly, and while in the past the thought of being so violent might have bothered her, today it sounded like a damn good idea. She watched a smile spread across his face as their eyes met, giving her even more pep in her step. He was strikingly beautiful when he smiled. She was practically skipping now as she approached, knowing that as soon as she was in range, she would be swept into strong, loving arms, and she was right. She sighed happily as he held her close, feeling as he pressed a kiss to her temple. She squeezed him back before looking up, more than ready for the kiss she had been waiting hours for. He leaned down, closing the distance, and when their lips met, the world disappeared. At least it did for a few moments, before a very annoying voice caught her attention."Oh, isn't that so sweet?" Momoko practically snarled. "It looks like he missed you!"Kagome turned in his arms so she could see the bitch fouling up her air. "Uh-huh, and? At least I know that he isn't pretending to be interested in me just to get between my legs. How many 'boyfriends' have you had this week, Momoko?" the miko asked, using dramatic air quotes.Their confrontation was quickly drawing attention, just as it had the day before, and students gathered around them, hoping to witness the fight that Kagome’s boyfriend had denied them when he restrained her from beating Momoko's ass the day before."Are you sure he's not pretending?" the whore asked in a saccharine sweet voice."In fact, I am," the miko replied with a smirk. "I know you've probably never experienced it, so of course you can't recognize it, but what we have is what's referred to as a 'relationship'. That's what guys and girls that genuinely like each other do. Maybe if you didn't spread your legs so fast, you might have been in one by now. Why the hell should they bother taking you out or romancing you when you're giving it away for free? You know what that tells me? That you know that you're not worth the effort.""You bitch," Momoko hissed.Kagome couldn't help but laugh. The crowd around them was clearly on her side, agreeing with everything she said. No one even thought to defend the school slut, because everyone knew Kagome was speaking the absolute truth."And?" the miko asked with a smirk. "I'd rather be a bitch than a whore. Wait, I take that back. You're not a whore, Momoko." She paused, her smirk widening as their spectators fell silent, just waiting for it. They knew it was coming, and they were not disappointed. "See, at least a whore gets paid for it. If you were asking for money to screw all the guys, you'd have been with a hell of a lot less of them. You're not worth the change in my pocket."Sesshoumaru was surprised at the venom in his sweet little miko's voice. She wasn't mean like this. She didn't go out of her way to hurt someone else, even if this girl deserved it. She was being absolutely vicious, and he didn't know what to think about it. His beast loved it, hanging on her every word, proud of her strength. She was going to need that bite when she became his mate and the Lady of the West, because not everyone was going to approve. Demon bitches wouldn't hesitate to tear into her, and it was exciting to see that she would be able to give it right back.Kagome's words brought Momoko's mind back around to the reason she was there, and she tried to ignore the sting of the insult, only made worse by the sounds of agreement coming from their classmates."Speaking of pockets," she started darkly. "Maybe you should check his."The miko raised an eyebrow in question, wondering just where she was going with this. "Oh? And what am I going to find?"Momoko laughed for a few moments before reeling in her absolute glee at what was about to happen. "Phone numbers, you little twit. Other women's phone numbers. How much could he possibly care about you if he's out there already looking for the next girl?" She was rather surprised that the male in question showed no concern or worry that she’d caught him in the act, but she moved past that to watch Kagome's face instead. The miko looked up at her taiyoukai, amusement in her eyes. 'Phone numbers?' she asked silently through their connection.‘When I was out alone yesterday and today, women handed me scraps of paper with numbers on them,’ he replied. ‘Is that what she’s referring to?’Everyone was completely silent, watching and waiting to see just how Kagome was going to react. They could see how the couple seemed to communicate with just their eyes, only to be surprised when the supposedly betrayed girl began to laugh."What are you expecting me to do, Momoko? Cry? Scream? Beg him to tell me it isn't true?" A short bark of a laugh escaped as she returned her focus to Sesshoumaru. "Let's see 'em. Any hotties today?"The taiyoukai obediently reached into his pocket, retrieving four little bits of paper, and Kagome claimed them, checking them over one by one while silently explaining to him what Momoko was insinuating. Once he finally understood, a smirk pulled at his lips."None nearly as beautiful as you, love," he said while drawing her body closer to his. He kissed her forehead softly before turning his focus to the nasty little female that still sought to ruin their relationship, likely in the hopes of claiming him for her own. She looked shocked that her plan had failed, and he chuckled."It is far easier to simply accept the numbers and throw them away than to reject them all. It quickly becomes tedious, telling woman after woman that I have no interest in anything that they might have to offer, that I am taken, mind, body, and soul, by an angel walking the earth. I want no other, and that isn't going to change. Love as deep and all encompassing as ours endures. I will hold Kagome in my arms until the end of time. She is worth holding on to.""Unlike you," Kagome added with a wicked grin, "who gets tossed away like a used tissue. Fuck off, Momoko. You lose... again."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
