It was already nighttime; the only sounds emanating from the depths of the woods were the high-pitched chirping of crickets and the croaking of frogs. The group of friends gathered around a fire pit, each one finding rest lying on their chosen spot, except for Inuyasha who was napping while sitting against a tree. Sango was leaning on Kirara's soft fur, Miroku laid his back across a large root, holding the golden staff in his crossed arms. Kagome and Shippo shared a sleeping bag.
An abrupt change of weather woke the inuhanyo for some seconds, making him open one amber eye. Since he didn't sense any malignant presence, neither an unknown scent, Inuyasha sighed and calmed down, believing the sudden cold was just a common natural phenomenon. After a few minutes, he was already asleep like everyone else, and that was the moment when a sneaky dark smoke silently approached the improvised bed from the 20th century.
The tenebrous mist came closer to the teenager's parted lips, who was breathing heavily, and soon it got inside her not only through the mouth, but also invading her nostrils and ears. So, Kagome's eyes slowly opened, shining in the most bright green shade, expressionless though. Carefully, the girl found a way to sit without disturbing the little fox demon's slumber. Shippo continued to snore, not having a clue that he was left alone in that sleeping bag. No one has noticed Kagome getting up and walking on her tiptoes. Her arms waved to the sides as she sleepwalked, each step leading her to a place far from her trustful friends. That was how the modern miko vanished inside the forest, into such gloomy night.

"Is it about the night I have been with Kagewaki for the last time?"
"What did you say?"
"You're taking revenge on me because you know I have laid with him. I'll have you know that I don't regret it, not even for an instant, and if I had another chance I would lay with him again."
Reddish eyes blinked a few times, as his chest rose and fell in a long sigh. The big globe on his abdomen twirled to the sides frantically, the little ones on the back of his hands closed and opened countless times, as if his every window to the external world was feeling anguished, and indeed they were. Each piece of him revolved as if Naraku would dismount at any moment, even if his new body was stronger than ever and had been molded so carefully. However, there was any little shard of his existence which wasn't doing well at all, and the spider could feel the agony, the fury, the darkness crushing him down. At the same time, he didn't feel the urge to rebel, nor to scream though, his blood did not get warm. He was feeling, and he was not. Would it be the case that his very own mind has been tricking him?
His heart could be far away, almost unreachable, yet his mind remained intact. Every single piece of the maze that composed it was still inside of Naraku, and part of minds' composition are the memories...
Naraku was helpless to control the impulses of his brain, forcing him to remember Annabelle's bitter words. He also was incapable to refrain the images hovering in his thoughts, all suppositions of what could have happened on that damn Samhain night, of things he hasn't seen and preferred to abstain himself to find out.
His pools, red as blood, closed. Slender legs stretched and the hanyo stood up. Naraku was hiding inside a wooden hut very similar to the one where he had Annabelle for the first time, and then that ghost - or whatever it was - of Kagewaki also did.
How that was possible? Resentful, he wondered, frowning. Presuppositions mixed with memoirs of moments shared with the lass, which suddenly seemed to worth less than nothing. Naraku has been but a a solace to her, since she couldn't have what her heart truly desired.
A grin torn his pale complexion, wicked rubies raised, focusing on the landscape beyond the small window. What did it all matter after all? Naraku opened one hand and from the flesh of it's palm the jewel emerged almost black. The weight he has felt when having to do the foreigner suffer suddenly seemed lighter. Ah, yes, without noticing, Annabelle gave to the arachnid a weapon he didn't have before to use against her.
She gave him a reason.

"Shinrinko, it's time for you to eat something!" Motoko softly touched her shrinking shoulder.
"I'm not hungry, thank you." Annabelle was as lethargic as hours ago, her eyes didn't focus on nothing specifically.
It was already morning, the refugees were amounting around the fruits they managed to peak, only the ginger woman kept herself distant, sitting under a tree. From where people gathered, they could hear sounds of waving water. Although Anna believed that melody belonged to sea waves and she loved the ocean so much, not even such hope was enough to cheer her up. Her senses and feelings were rotting, not only because of meeting Naraku, but for the guilty she has been carrying inside in secrecy. To look, to deal with those people hurt, for Anna knew their blood has been close to be spilled, and for her mistake alone.
Besides, she also lost her sister's trust, which was so hard to rebuild. Feeling impotent about the loss her twin just suffered, and for understanding precisely how enduring that was painful, Anna punished herself in thoughts so much that she felt suffocated. Her heart implored her to look for Ailyn, still the lass couldn't let those villagers on their own, she owed them so much!
Annabelle was decided, first she would find a safe place to shelter them, then it would be the time to seek for Ailyn.
As soon as they all finished eating, the western lass rose up and continued to guide the people towards the litoral. Yoru refrained herself to fill the foreigner with questions, but this didn't prevent the child to follow the lass like a little shadow at her back, not being able to conceal the worries into the rounded graffiti gaze. Annabelle didn't find inner force to fake smiles, so she just walked without looking behind.

"Did you have beautiful dreams?" Kagome listened a feminine voice sounding low as her eyes hardly opened.
My head is aching! The girl moaned in pain, then tried to move her arms and legs, but failed. "What is this?!" Something was holding her limbs, it wasn't ropes, neither chains, but a dark energy so heavy that weakened her constitution. The brownish globes, still foggy, narrowed to focus on who was standing ahead. She recognized the person only by it's silhouette. The red dress and the long golden hair were unmistakable. Ailyn never had any pretention of hiding herself. "... you?"
"Yes, me." bored, she snorted, kneeling in front of the teenager while resting her hands on the hilt of the scythe made of Naraku's bones.
"What do you want from me?" Though fearful, Kagome didn't hesitate to stare at the lass.
"Sincerely speaking, there is nothing you can offer me but a fleeting satisfaction. Then, everything will return to be how it was, and I will keep feeling empty inside." She sighed bitterly. With the sight restored, the traveller from the future noticed marks of suffering on the foreigner's features and parted her lips to speak, yet Ailyn gave her no time to say a word. Crimson lips suddenly smirked coldly as she uttered: "And since when did my life or yours have been something more than a senseless void?" One of her hands enclosed Kagome's stiffened face, fingertips rubbed against a warm cheek. "Naraku wants you dead," Ailyn told without commotion. "And I want someone to pay for my suffering," she shrugged.
"Wait! Your suffering?! I did nothing against you!" The girl tried to appeal to the other's conscience.
"But, before I kill you," the Red Rose proceeded her speech, ignoring her victim's appeal, "why not making you suffer to relieve my pain?" A dark chuckle went out those lips painted red.
"No, don't do this!" Kagome started an attempt of convincing the woman, yet soon her reason faded and a scream of agony left her throat. Just by closing a hand into fist, Ailyn made the phantom fog around the girl emit a sort of electrical discharge, provoking an intense pain around all the paralyzed body. Almond eyes sealed firmly, the poor girl grimaced, shaking, feeling like slender, sharpen fingers made of smoke were squeezing, scratching her skin, and Annabelle's twin persisted on that torture, the thirst for vengeance was overflowing from her turquoise globes.
"I shall make you suffer like he must have suffered!" She growled.
"He? Who is he?!" Kagome yelled, achieving to revolve her limbs a bit, still such endeavor was too far of making her break free from the mist. "Inuyasha..." the name came out muttered.
"With some luck he will arrive in time to witness your very last breath." Ailyn spat sarcastically.

"Kagome!" The inuhanyo called her out through the forest, searching for the girl in every corner. His nose, touching the ground, sniffed deeply, trying to find any trace of his companion's scent.
The others were also dedicated on investigate their friend's disappearance. Sango and Miroku rode Kirara, patrolling the region from the heights.
"Inuyasha, you jerk! How couldn't you see she getting up, how didn't you hear she leaving, or worse, being taken by someone else?!" Shippo, on his turn, was unburdening by the hanyo's side. From the corner of the greenish eyes, little drops began to emerge.
"Look who's talking!" The halfbreed smacked the little fox demon's head. "It was you who was sleeping right by her side and didn't notice anything!" Enraged, Inuyasha didn't care for Shippo's complaints after a bump formed on the fox's scalp and just returned to analyze the sleeping bag again. When holding the sheet in his hands, the silver-haired lad saw something discretely contouring it. "Damn it!" He cursed while looking at a thin layer of dark fog dissipating from the fabric. Then his amber eyes focused on the forest ahead and captured the same smoke making a trail.
"What is that?!" Shippo forgot the ache on his head and shivered.
From above, Miroku and Sango also were contemplating the straight line drew by mist, indicating a rout to the Mount Hakurei's debris.
"Houshi-sama, I have a bad feeling about this..." the demon slayer shared her worries. Miroku nodded, feeling exactly the same anxiety.
Inuyasha shook his head, then controlled his breathing to cool his spirit. Finally, he unsheathed Tetsusaiga and began to jump over the trees, as fast as he could, on a journey to the unknown. He also had a hunch of his own, the inuhanyo knew he would find Kagome as soon as his feet reached the end of that foggy path, for the more he followed the clouded darkness, more the girl's scent grew intense.
"Inuyasha, wait!" From behind came Shippo, panting after reaching his pace. Tiny fingers grabbed the red hakama and the little fox held himself on his friend's leg.

"Lord Sesshomaru, is there any problem?" The small verdant vassal wondered while seeing his master ceasing abruptly his elegant steps. The little girl who came bouncing on her tiptoes also stopped all her movements, holding her breath like pretending to be a statue.
The handsome, haughty white yokai graciously spun his body, gazing at the morning sky. The wind softly waved his silvered hair, moving it's locks away from the princely face. His aurum eyes barely shone.
Without previous warning, Sesshomaru impulsed his body and hovered to the clouds, going to anywhere which has caught his attention. Jaken clumsily shook his lifted arms, trying to reach him, yet facing his failure the little yokai whined. Soon, a large shadow covered the sun over his head, and the little one looked above in confusion. It was Arurun taking flight, on his back there was Rin offering a hand to the greenish demon.
"Let's go, lord Jaken!" Smiling, she invited him.

"Shinrinko..." a voice, hoarse by the advanced age, called her serenely. Annabelle remained keeping distance, walking ahead of everybody with her gaze lowered to the ground.
"Yes, lady Keiko?" She murmured, looking at the old woman. Orange locks were falling upon one side of the face painted in white, the lass didn't show any interest on fixing them though.
"Everyone is concerned about you." In slow steps, the elder woman got close and carefully reached the lass' front, stopping there, inevitably making Anna cease her pace as well. The foreigner's lips parted, ready to give any excuse, but Keiko talked first: "I know you will say anything to convince me you are alright, but my child, do you see this wrinkles?" She chuckled, pointing her own face. "They have taught me many things, it is not easy to deceive me."
"I..." Anna sighed and evaded her gaze, every feature of hers stiffened in a vain attempt to not succumb to her emotions.
"I know nothing of your past, yet I can see how it marked you. You find it difficult to open your heart and trust in others."
"True" she confessed, deeply breathing. "But what is the point of talking about this now? We must proceed with our journey..."
"I do not know what is it you are running from, Shinrinko," Keiko gave no importance to Anna's suggestion. "I just know you cannot run forever. If you do not face what is tormenting you, someday it will consume you from inside till not a trace of who you are is left."
"I really don't want to talk about it." That almost sounded like a pleading. Her fingers squeezed the dirty white skirt. At last, blue eyes met the dark small ones, sorrows and doubts poured down the foreigner's gaze. "The farther away I can get, more chances I will have to build a new life!"
"Do you really believe it?" A tiny, wrinkled hand touched the young, slender one. Dark brown eyes, so little and straight, stared at the lass, making her shiver, forming a knot in her throat.
Annabelle had no need to answer with words, the torrid water descending from her turquoises, washing the powder rice away from her cheeks manifested every single frustration and sadness till then concealed. Ashamed of her own vulnerability, filled by the sensation of solitude, she covered her face behind her hands. Anna couldn't stop thinking about the unending circle of broken dreams and significant losses, the grief she have been enduring for people she had loved and also for her very self, for when looking inside her essence, all Annabelle could see were ashes of someone she no longer was, like she had become just a shadow of the person she used to be once.
Her legs weakened, ancient hands held her arms and pulled the lass close. The foreigner's chin found shelter on a friendly shoulder. Gentle fingers stroked her head, brushing some ginger locks. Suddenly, she felt her knees touching the ground and Anna realized her body was almost falling to the side. The old lady accommodated her trembling figure on her lap.
Keiko saw Yoru, Motoko and Himawari getting close and silently shook her head.
"Go back there, delay the rest of the people to reach this place." Himawari understood the elder's gesture and spoke with her sister and friend.
"I think it has something to do with her sister." Motoko whispered in the older lassie's ear.
"Sister?" Himawari raised a brow, forgetting what Annabelle has told them on other day.
"Yes, she came to see Shinrinko not long ago... then Shinrinko left with her, and returned acting strangely." She said as if it was something obvious.
"Right, now take Yoru from here" at last, Himawari recalled the foreigner has mentioned something about having a twin sister and waved her hand, gesturing the way to the other two girls. She stayed though, keeping a respectful distance, watching the old woman solace Annabelle.
"Do you understand now, child?" Keiko asked tenderly. "It is not the place where you live that will bring you any renovation. As long as you cannot get over the past, it will follow you no matter where you are. So stop running, just face it."
Anna slowly raised her body, undoing the sheltering embrace. Her soaked face lifted up, she was still sobbing. Before the lass could wipe the trail of tears from her warm pinkish cheeks, Keiko got up and did if for her.
"There you are..." the old lady moved her coppery locks behind her ears and the Scottish lass showed a humble smile of gratitude.
"Find your sister" another voice, younger and straight, gave the advice.
"Himawari?" Anna looked behind and blinked while staring at the girl.
"Didn't you hear me? Just go." She insisted, pressing the wooden stick inside her impatient fingers.
"But how will I leave you here, in the middle of the woods?"
"Shinrinko, with all due respect, we appreciate your help, but we don't depend on it." The lassie wearing a dark blue demon slayer garment closed her eyes and said calmly. As Keiko chuckled spontaneously, Belle frowned in bewilderment.
"It's not the first time that we clear the forest because we are running from demons or bandits, and we achieved to find that place where we lived by our own efforts, without counting on any special being such as you." Himawari sounded natural, resuming to look at the "entity" her sister held so dear. "So go and solve what you have to solve, and if you want to come back to us when everything is finished, you know where to find us. We'll be close to the litoral."
"Shinrinko, she is right." Keiko said. "You must..."
Annabelle attentively gazed at the women from different generations. They had no supernatural power, and yet both emanated an inner strength capable to inspire the ones around. She also noticed such strength was fed of self-confidence. Those women knew they would be capable of doing the impossible if it was needed, and that was the sort of belief Annabelle yearned to embrace. So, she swallowed her bitterness and tried to send it away for as long as she could. Blaming herself wouldn't solve anything, the lass realized at last.
"Thank you" she said, bowing to them respectfully. Then, her hands slid all over the face and if her crying has already cleaned most of the make up, her fingers undid the rest. Now only her natural features have remained.
"You are welcome, Shinrinko." Keiko smiled.
"Annabelle" she murmured, looking the eldest in the eyes.
"What?" Keiko and Himawari asked at the same time.
"My name" Anna inhaled, then her own smile grew larger, even if she still felt so broken inside. "My real name is Annabelle".
And that was how the lass said a temporary goodbye from them two, revealing her true identity. Then, like a spot made of light, she took flight, vanishing into the vastness of clouds, beginning the search for the blood of her blood, taken by the wish to do the right thing this time.
