Chapter nine: Going out
____________________________________________________________________ _____
Dim, early morning light cleared away night's darkness. Sesshoumaru stood
silent and still, vacantly staring past the window to the white deserted house
across the street. He had not rested since he had found Rin gone and did not
want to now until she could be found. InuYasha, on the other hand, was
snoozing loudly on the sofa. Being too tired from staying up all night,
his half-brother had settled on the couch immediately falling asleep.
Sesshoumaru grimaced in irritation. The idiot was half human. He should
not expect a full demon's endurance from a mutt. At least InuYasha had made
the call to the one youkai who might be able to help them before he passed
out. Fortunately, InuYasha had gotten in touch with the youkai of the void
and she did not live far from him, only an hour's drive from his home. She
would arrive at midday.
For a long time, Sesshoumaru stared absently, his thoughts unconsciously straying.
Thoughts of her:
Standing before him, wringing the hem of her dress.
Naked, splashing in the water, net in hand, smiling at her catch.
Trembling under his shadow.
Reeking of despair.
Struggling, then falling limp in his clawed grip.
Covered in bubbles, bare on his bathroom floor.
Her small form cringing in the corner, terrified,
of him.....
Fear.
Sesshoumaru closed his eyes as a wave of nausea overtook him. He wavered for
a moment, fighting it. After several moments, the vile feeling passed. He
let out a hard choppy breath and opened his eyes. The bastard. He had done
it again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rin shut off the hot water, thankful it had been a short shower. For several
moments she stood, dripping, waiting as her father stepped out of the tub.
While hugging herself and shivering slightly, she looked to the side. Through
the rippled glass of the shower door, she could see his dark form as he moved
around, drying off and picking up his clothes before pausing at the bathroom
door. His voice carried deep with an edge of irritation. "Hurry up, girl.
Get dry and dress. We will be leaving shortly. If you are not ready when I
come back, you will be punished." Then, his dark form faded.
Sniffing quietly, Rin eased out of the tub, wincing at the smarting sting on
the now very tender area between her legs. Frowning, she glanced at the open
shackle on the floor once before searching for something to dry off with.
Finding a towel in the cabinet under the sink, she proceeded to dry off while
heading for her bed. As she walked, Rin noticed how light her leg felt
without the chain weighing it down.
Drying her hair, Rin sifted through the clothes on the bed to see if he had
left a bra for her. She sighed, no such luck. All that her father brought was
a dark blue long sleeve t-shirt, jeans, panties, socks and tennis shoes.
No bra. When she went to school, he always made her wear one, along with
the long sleeves and jeans but, during the summer, he preferred her not to
wear one. Shrugging it off, Rin dressed quickly, sat on the bed, clasped her
hands in her lap to wait.
After only a few moments, he appeared at the door wearing casual jeans and
a button up gray dress shirt. The waves of his black hair hung loosely over
his shoulders and down his back.
He scowled. "Your hair is a mess."
Worried, Rin looked toward her left shoulder. Without thinking, she picked
up the damp hair that had been hanging there before laying it back down and
smoothed it with her fingers. "I...could not find a...brush."
Suddenly, a vice like grip seized her right wrist. Rin yelped then cringed,
closing her eyes.
He growled. "Open those eyes, girl."
Rin opened her eyes to see white knuckles of the hand that was gripping her
wrist most painfully. She swallowed. "I..I'm sorry."
Her father jerked her up, pulling her toward the door leading out of the
bedroom. His sharp words cut through her. "Bitch, might as well leave it
like that. Since you are such a tramp, you should look the part."
Rin pushed that sinking feeling back, burying it, hiding it for later. Now
was not the time. She was going to see what the rest of her new home looked
like. Maybe it was nicer than their last one. Her room certainly was. What
would the rest of the house look like?
They left her new room to descend a flight of stairs. The stairway was closed
in, walls on both sides. While trying to ignore the pain in her wrist as he
dragged her along, Rin glanced around. Soon, they came to the bottom of
the stairway. It opened into what looked to be a den. It seemed cozy: A
fireplace on the far wall, a couple of brown recliners, and a wooden floor
covered by a large, fuzzy, tan rug.
They passed windows on her left while going through the room to another door
on the other side. Through this door was a foyer, ahead, an entryway into a
living room, to her right, a hallway and, to her left, another door. Her
father pulled her to the door at her left before opening it.
Even though it was cloudy, Rin squinted at the light. It was too bright for
her. She stumbled once on the front step but righted herself quickly, hoping
he did not notice. As her eyes adjusted to the brightness, Rin surveyed the
front yard and house while her father locked the door: green grass,prickly
sticker hedges underneath large windows tall trees, dark shade and a very
quiet suburban street.
The lock clicked.
He pulled on her wrist again, though not as tight, leading her down a cement
sidewalk and toward the driveway.
When they halted at what she supposed was her father's new, grey SUV , he
dropped her hand to open the passenger door. "Get in."
Rin scrambled into the front seat, blatantly keeping her eyes downcast to
the floorboard.
She flinched slightly when he slammed the door shut. A second later, he slipped
into the driver's seat, started the engine, and backed out of the driveway.
Rin wanted so much to see the new neighborhood so she dared quick glances out
the window from the corner of her eye, hoping he would not notice. From what
she could tell, they now lived in an upper middle class area, one with many
two-story houses and well kept lawns. No one seemed to be out this morning.
She had hoped to see some children playing but she guessed it was too early
for the little ones to be out.
Rin liked children. The younger ones at school did not tease her, many even
liked her. Since she was in a higher grade, she did not see the elementary
children that often, only at times when their recess coincided with her break
period and she was allowed to go outside. Sometimes, the teachers would scold
her, tell her she was too old to play with the elementary children. Some
teachers even told her to stay away from them but, every once in a while,
she would find a way to play with the little ones. They always smiled and
giggled and welcomed her.
Out of the memory of their laughing smiles, Rin frowned in despair. School.
Was she going back? Had they moved away from Crystal Waters?
Wondering, Rin lifted her gaze from the floorboard and turned her head to
look out the passenger side window, trying to see if the streets were familiar
or not. A sign caught her attention. It read: Angel Valley. A sharp pinch on
her left leg prompted her to drop her gaze back to the floorboard and her
tennis shoes once again. She glanced at the spot on her thigh that throbbed.
That had hurt. She had been careless.
"We are going to the mall, Rin. I want you to be on your best behavior."
Rin began to twist the hem of her shirt with her fingers. "Yes, Father."
That cleared up the wondering. Crystal Waters did not have a mall but
Brookhaven did. She had been to Brookhaven once on a field trip, one her
father did not know about. She had forged his signature on a permission slip
so she could go. It had been a wonderful experience. They had gone to the
museum and afterwards, they had gone to the mall. The mall was such a big
place with two floors and an escalator. It also had a food court and so many
shops. It even had a few small rides that adults could go on with their kids.
The main thing she had liked about the field trip was being free to roam. The
chaperone teacher told them they could go off on their own. While most of her
classmates raced away with groups of their friends, she had gladly gone by
herself. She listened to the latest songs in the music store with headphones,
glanced at books and magazines in the bookstore, hugged a few stuffed
animals in the toy store as well as played the tryout video game there,
and she had also strolled around the food court, smelling the most
delightful aromas of pizza and chocolate chip cookies. She had even
checked out the game room and watched the small kids play skeet ball and
the teenagers play the video games.
Rin smiled a little. Maybe, if she was good enough, he would treat her with
something, a slice of pizza or a cookie or...a book.
A book would be nice. She loved the manga in the bookstore, especially the
romance ones. She distinctly remembered one where this boy found a girl tied
up in the trash. At first, he thought it was a real girl but then he realized
it was a...persacom...a personal computer...which looked a whole lot like a
very beautiful and cute girl. He had taken her home and named her Chi because
that was all she would say. It was a cute story...what was it called again?
Oh yes, Chobits. If her father went to the book store for some reason,
he may let her look and she could find it again.
Rin continued to linger in the daydream and the fond memories of the field
trip. Only when the vehicle stopped did she blink back into reality.
Gripping the hem of her shirt tightly, she began biting her bottom lip, not
knowing what she should do. He had never taken her to a place like this before.
Did he want her to get out of the car herself or was he going to open the door
and pull her out?
Rin waited nervously while her father got out.
A moment later, he opened her door. "Get out."
She slipped out, keeping her eyes downcast to the pavement.
Her father locked the passenger side door. "You can look up and around.
Stay close to me. I will not be holding your hand."
Rin looked up at the large tan building, immediately recognizing it. Yep,
'Brookhaven Mall' it read in great big letters above the large glass double
doors.
A jolt of excitement rushed through her. Falling in behind her father, she
smiled, careful to hide her happiness. They were going into the Mall.
The double glass doors opened automatically so they could step through. The
first thing to hit her was the smells coming from the food court. Spread out
before them were hundreds of tables and chairs. Lined up along the walls on
each side were the fast food restaurants: burgers, pizzas, Chinese food, ice
cream and .....she inhaled deeply..,chocolate chip cookies.
A tight knot spasmed in her stomach. Rin swallowed and took in a deep breath,
not wanting a cramp at this time. She had eaten well last night so her stomach
should not be giving her fits.
Thankfully, the spasm did not turn into a cramp and she relaxed. Wide-eyed,
she greedily observed the food as they passed by the string of fast food places.
She grinned as she watched a mother give her little girl an ice cream cone.
The toddler looked no older than four with long, curly, blond hair tied back
with red bows. The child laughed and clapped her hands together before reaching
for the treat.
Rin's smile fell some as she continued to watch the mother and child. Would
she have children some day?
What if she did?
Consciously, Rin shut that notion away, not wanting to think about it. Instead,
she switched her attention from the uncertain future back to the present.
Her father walked into a clothing store. By the displays, Rin guessed it to be
a shop for juniors and teens like herself.
A sales lady approached her father. "May I help you?"
A very normal smile of politeness slid across his features. "Ah, yes. I need
some clothes for my daughter. I do believe she is a size three in womens and a
size six in juniors."
The young woman gave her a smile. Rin returned the smile shyly then averted her
gaze to the side. She suddenly had a strange feeling this woman would remember
her. She had not come into this store on her field trip and she knew it was
an impossibility, but she could not help that unwarranted spark of fear.
The sales lady spoke cheerily. "Oh yes, I do believe you are correct in that
assumption, sir."
Rin cautiously peered up at the lady who was now turning with a wave of her
hand, her peppy tone asking them to follow. "Come this way, sir. I will show
you to our latest styles in her size."
With a nod toward the lady, her father followed. "Thank you, Miss."
Rin obediently trailed behind. Nervous goose bumps rose up on her skin. What
should she do? Would she have to try on some clothes? Never before had her
father taken her shopping like this. In the past, he had always brought her
clothes home, and they were always close to her size.
Sighing to calm her nerves, Rin shrugged it off. Maybe he was going to ask if
she cared for a particular style. All the girls at school wore the latest
styles. The really pretty girls usually stuck their noses up at her, and on
occasion snickered, pointing at her so called 'dorky' clothes. She didn't see
the difference really. Just because she wore plain blue jeans and dark colored
long sleeve shirts didn't mean they had to laugh at her for it.
When they came upon the small teen section, her father dismissed the sales
lady, politely informing her that they were going to browse.
Smiling, the lady informed them that she would be nearby if they needed her
before turning away to help another customer.
Rin was glad the lady was gone. Being around the cheery woman made her jumpy.
For a while, she silently stood by her father as he flipped through the
hangers, picking out jeans and shirts. She stayed close to him, quietly
peeking around at all the clothes and glancing at other people who were
browsing. Movement near the store's entrance caught her eye as three teenage
boys sauntered in. One was very good looking with shoulder length wavy blond
hair and big blue eyes. The other two were average with dark, short hair and
they favored each other so they were probably brothers. All three were
laughing and cutting up, jibbing each other in the ribs. They stopped in
the middle of the store and began to glance at the clothes while pushing
back hangers on the rack. The two dark haired males broke off from the cute
one, talking and snickering.
Without thinking, Rin gazed at the good looking male.
Bright, blue eyes glanced up from their scanning and locked on her. He smiled
warmly. Instantly, Rin lowered her gaze, mentally scolding herself.
'stupid, stupid, stupid'. She had been staring and had not realized it.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she glanced at her father who was intently
studying a see-through black mesh tank top. Letting out a heavy sigh,
she relaxed. He had not noticed.
A small part of her really wanted to look at the cute boy again. But should
she chance it? Sighing, Rin moved closer to her father and kept her eyes on
the floor. No. He had told her to be good and she did not want to anger him.
Not today. As soon as they left this store, she would look around again but
not now, not when there was a very attractive boy so close by, one that had
caught her attention off guard. The cute boy probably thought she was easy
anyway. That's why he smiled. He knew she was a tramp.
Absently, Rin reached up to touch the strands of hair hanging over her left
shoulder. In the process, her forearm brushed against her chest. Her hand
froze in mid reach as she suddenly realized; she was not wearing a bra,
and she was in public. A faint whimper wedged in her throat as heat spread,
burning in her cheeks. Slowly, she crossed her arms, praying the cute boy
was not staring at her chest.
"Hi."
Rin closed her eyes. 'Oh, please no.'
Terrified, Rin opened her eyes and looked up to find the very cute boy
standing very close and smiling at her.
All the air rushed out of her lungs. Her heart began to pound. With great
effort, she slowly peered over to her father. He was glaring at the teenaged
boy.
She bit back a whimper. Please, please don't get angry.
Rin looked back at the teenage male who had unknowingly earned her a good
beating. "Uh, hello."
He seemed to be ignoring the death glare her father was giving him or either
he did not notice. "What's your name?"
She nearly choked. "I..."
"My daughter does not talk to strange teenage boys." Her father's icy tone
flattened.
At this, the cute boy looked at her father and frowned. "Oh, sorry, sir."
The boy smiled back at her once before walking away.
Rin wavered on her feet, lowering her gaze to the floor, drowning in blackness
while her heart pounded painfully in her ears. He was going to beat her for
this. He might even....
"We are leaving, Rin."
Upon hearing the sharp edge in his tone, Rin forced herself to breathe. Calm.
Stay calm.
Maybe he would forget about it by the time they finished shopping. Maybe he
would only...play some...and not...hurt her.
A small voice in the back of her mind loudly disagreed. It quivered in panic,
telling her the truth of what was really going to happen.
She squashed that small voice, silencing it.
That small voice destroyed hope and right now; hope was all she had.
When her father finished at the check-out counter, they left the store.
They walked for awhile. Rin had climbed out of her fear and pushed the worry
back for later. The mall was bright and alive with smells, sounds and people,
something precious she will never enjoy again.
The chirping of birds grabbed her curiosity. A moment later they came upon a
store with a sign that read 'Brookhaven Pets'. As they passed the window, Rin
saw furry, white puppies in the display. They were bouncing, biting, and
falling over each other. A smile pulled at her lips. They were so cute!
And they looked so soft! She so wished to pet one.
Rin glanced at her father who was walking ahead. To her utter delight, he
entered the pet store. The puppy bin was directly next to the doorway. He
walked past the playful puppies then began studying the items on the wall
next to the puppy bin. Rin stopped behind him. Directly on her right, only
a foot away, the puppies were grunting and gnawing with play. She turned
and began to watch, her fingers itching to touch their soft fur.
Secretly, she glanced at her father again. Seeing his mind was elsewhere, she
leaned over and reached into the bin, her fingers destination; the sweet,
white one with the curly tail and perky ears. The pup did not seem to mind
her reaching hand because it was too busy biting on its siblings ear. Her
fingers smoothed along the fuzzy softness. Out of the corner of her eye,
she saw her father walk toward the checkout counter. Quickly, she
straightened and followed.
Curious, she peeped around her father's arm to see what he was buying. It
puzzled her to see a rolled up length of chain, two thick leather collars,
two large metal hook locks, a big blue box with a lightening bolt across the
front, and a two foot long leather rod the width of her finger. The collars
looked to be for a dog. Were they going to get a pet? Rin looked at the back
of the store at the large kennels. There was a German Shepherd and a very
pretty collie. They never had a pet before. Was their new back yard big enough
for a big dog? Was he going to pick one out here?
After paying for the items, her father asked the sales person if there were
any private family restrooms close by.
The sales person pointed toward the pet store entrance. "There is one in
Briars, the large department store at the end of the main isle."
Rin followed her father down the main mall isle and into a large, very
extravagant department store. There were not many people here. Rin guessed the
reason was because it was a weekday and it was too early for wealthy shoppers
to be out.
They walked deeper into the store along the right side until they came to three
large doors. Obviously bathrooms. One read 'Women', one read 'Men'. And one
on the far left read 'Family'.
Rin followed her father into the bathroom and looked around. It was a large
single bathroom with one toilet, sink and paper hand towels. The door shut.
The lock clicked. The hairs on the back of her neck prickled.
She turned to see him setting the bags on the floor, seeming to ignore her.
Licking her lips nervously, Rin backed up to the far wall and leaned against
it, keeping her attention on the intricate patterns in the floor tile.
His tall dark form stepped closer. Desperately, she tried to calm herself.
He just needed to use the bathroom, that was all.
Suddenly, large, strong hands seized her upper arms, squeezing the wounded
flesh. Rin winced and clenched her jaw shut to hold back a cry of pain.
A shadow passed, blocking out the light. The heat from his body nearly
smothering her. He lowered, whispering a hot snarl close to her ear. "Filthy
tramp. You looked at that boy, didn't you? You wanted to fuck him, I could see
it in your face."
Trembling, Rin barely shook her head. "No...no...Daddy...I swear...I didn't
...I didn't."
A wicked smile crept into his tone. "Is that so? I don't believe you. I think
when we get home, you need to be taught a few more lessons. You need to learn
how to behave."
She let out a small whimper when his fingers ground into the freshly aching
injuries on her upper arms. A tear inched down her right cheek.
His warm, wet tongue slid up the rim of her ear before his voice deepened to a
husky purr. "I might be more lenient with you...later, sweetheart, if you
please me well...right now. Show me how well you can use that pretty little
mouth of yours."
The painful grip on her upper arms loosened. Rin forced her body to stop
shaking with long, even breaths.
Those large hands slid lightly to her shoulders, gripped them and pushed down.
Her knees touched the floor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The wave of nausea was gone but a feeling of disgust lingered. The bastard
hanyou had taken her again. He felt it. Yet, this time, it was...different.
No pain like before. She had not...enjoyed it.
Sesshoumaru grimaced. They needed to be together. They were linked with his
blood, his spirit. He doubted very seriously they would be consummating the
mark any time soon but she needed to be near him. It would help them both.
Ten chimes from the clock in the hall informed him that he still had a while
before the youkai arrived.
InuYasha, who was still snoozing on the couch, snorted in his sleep.
Sesshoumaru resisted the childish urge to roll his eyes. Baka.
Growling softly, Sesshoumaru left the living room in favor of the kitchen.
Maybe he could eat. Maybe.
----------------------------------------------------------------- --
An hour later, the doorbell rang. Sesshoumaru was already walking to the
living room. He sensed the youkai as she pulled up in the driveway.
Passing through the living room, he growled at his half-breed brother.
"InuYasha! Get up!"
His half-brother opened glazed, sleepy eyes while sitting up. "What? Kagome?
Is it time for breakfast?"
Sesshoumaru paused at the door. "Idiot, I am not your bitch. Wake up. The
youkai is here."
Not caring to watch a mutt shake from sleep, Sesshoumaru opened the door to
find a... little girl?
White. She was so...white. For a split moment, he stopped, taken slightly
aback. The young child-like woman was the strangest sight he had ever seen.
Everything about her was white: her clothes, her hair, her skin, even the
flowers in her hair reflected the texture of shiny pearls. Everything on the
youkai was a pale, ghostly white. Everything....except one thing... her eyes.
They were black, the deepest pitch black with the depth of jeweled obsidian.
A dark chasmed abyss with the eternal power to engulf a soul.
Between her hands she held a small mirror which appeared to be set in white
stone. She held it naturally as if it were a part of her.
Sesshoumaru gave a single nod. "Kanna of the void, I presume."
Her vacant, black pools blinked once. "Yes."
Again, he was stirred from within by the gentle sound of her voice. It was a
phantom soft whisper veiling a vastness of demonic power, a despondency of
ancient knowledge disguised by the innocent tone of a child.
He gestured to the small female, stepping to the side while holding the door
open. "Greetings, come in."
Silently, the youkai walked into the living room, her soundless footfalls
giving the impression she glided on air.
Thankfully, InuYasha had wakened and was now standing by the couch. "Hey
Kanna! How's it going? Long time no see!"
The quiet ghost stopped in front of his half-brother and gave a nod in greeting.
Sesshoumaru quirked a brow as he closed the door and walked into the living
room. "You two...know each other?"
His half-brother grinned. "Yep, me and Kanna met in college."
He frowned in flat disbelief. "College. You went to college."
InuYasha grunted. "Feh! Yeah, I went to college...for awhile."
The mutt then shrugged with a jovial grin directed at the ghostly white female.
"Kanna here...kinda helped me with my...math."
If Sesshoumaru did not know better, he could have sworn he saw a hint of pink
rise on the woman-child's cheeks. "I...see."
Not wanting to delve into this particular topic any longer, Sesshoumaru
decided to get right to the point. "Kanna, I require assistance."
The ghost child slowly peered up at him from behind pale white bangs. "Yes,
what do you need?"
Sesshoumaru looked at his brother, giving him a hard glare, a silent unseen
gesture. .
InuYasha seemed to take the hint and backed away from Kanna.
He then stepped in front of the white youkai, taking InuYasha's place.
"Kanna, I need you to find someone...for me, a human girl."
Blackish desolate onyx gazed up at him. "Is she...special...to you?"
Biting back the discomfort at having to reveal such knowledge, he gave a slow
single nod. "Yes...she is special..to me."
The faintest impression of a smile graced her alabaster features. "Then, it
will help us...find her."
The ghostly woman-child looked down at her mirror. "Will she be...alone?"
He stifled a growl, edging out a reply almost under his breath. "No, she will
be with a hanyou."
"I can locate this girl but know this: When my mirror finds her, the hanyou
might sense its presence if he is...touching her."
"I have no other choice. I will take that risk."
She gave a solemn nod while still gazing down at her mirror. "So be it. Her
name?"
"Her name is Rin. Rin Onigumo.".
