The barren lands had somehow regained its peacefulness after everything that had happened during its slumbering hours, but at the moment Inuyasha returned to his comrades this was broken. His voice roared terribly over the treetops, beckoning the treachery of Kikto dto dare return.

Dirt and grass spread in ruined clumps as two figures wrestled by a long-dead campfire, the pair scuffling apparently. Inuyasha had Miroku’s staff jammed partially in his mouth, the monk stifling the halfling’s outraged behavior. In his reward, Miroku’s sleeves were mere ribbons, hanging off his arms with uneven strokes of Inuyasha’s claws. Each were sweaty and disheveled, fighting tooth and nail over whom would be the victor of this little meeting. Nearby, Kirara watched, mildly interested in who would give in first. Of course it was Miroku, being that he was thrown and landed on his rear for the seventh or so time. Stubborn as always, Inuyasha stood and threw back his head, shouting obstiesties at the clouds.

Sango tilted her head slightly to the side, having awoken only shortly before this and being immediately treated to the rough antics of the two. Kirara paced to her, having reverted back into the kitten like form, and cooed with endless affection while lying on the girl’s stomach. Sango smiled weakly, resting a quivering hand on the friend’s back and rubbing the fur with idle eyes still on the paused scuffle.

The sun was dry, the rains having taken a break and moved on south where they had been camping earlier that week. Because of this, it was growing quite warm, and the girl shifted uncomfortably, trying to sit up. She paused suddenly, a stitch in her side giving her a bit of trouble. Mu seu sensed this, and hurriedly made his way over to her. His face was smeared with dirt and mud, and his attire was nearly unfixable, but he glowed all the same when he approached her. There was another romance brewing here…but times were desperate and left no room for such antics. Still, he moved his fingers to a spot of blood where a wound had reopened, and suggested that they all pipe down and let Sango rest. She protested of course, forcing herself to sit completely up.

Dizziness was her enemy, and the world spun before her. Confused, she grasped her temples, unaware that Miroku had her embraced and held securely, adoring her bravery. Inuyasha however was no impressed, focused on the lust for revenge, and looked away from the couple with an irritated snort. Miroku moved Sango into the tent they had pitched (conveniently before breaking the news of Kikyou to Inuyasha) while the half-demon sulked his way to a rock and flung himself upon it. Agitatedly he folded his hands in his lap, peering at the bright sky with a look of sad confusion.

Why Kikyou? Why did you set out to hurt me so? Had I really been that horrible to you? Did I make you so bitter that you desired to destroy everything I’ve come to love?

He was troubled, unable to answer his own empty questions. The rest of the group hung back, aware that he needed his space. A red bird of some sort flocked to him, being attracted by the brilliance of his costume, but even this curious animal could not lighten the burden on his heart. He felt forsaken, as though everything he ever did ended up in failure. There was an assortment of memories here…himself remember each time he crossed Kagome when trying to do something right, and then the periods before that when he had steadily ruined Kikyou’s future. He rationalized that he was indeed a doomed lover, and he shut his eyes tightly, fighting back the mental lashes Kikyou had him wim with when he rejected her sensuality.

“So you would betray me again?” Inuyasha had felt his face growing hot, and he knew he had gone to bite back at her words, but she was quicker than that. Always quicker. “You fool! I do not think you’re capable of being even half demon! Your spine is softer than the mud I tread on!” That comment had hurt…really, truly hurt. Self conscious for a moment, Inuyasha arched his shoulders, burying his face in his h to to dig deeper into the scene. “If you wish to find your Kagome then I only hope she can realize that loving you is a stupid dream. However, I don’t think she’ll have to worry about it…seeing as you cannot seem to make up your mind. No one could ever fall in love with a halfling after all. No one but me at least. And you have shown that you are not worthy of my love, Inuyasha.” Inuyasha opened his eyes at last, each one shimmering openly with fresh tears. She had really said that to him…he had not dreamed it this time. His hands trembled as he began to rock, attempted to calm himself, but it was to no avail. No one could ever fall in love with a halfling after all. He was a sorry creature indeed. He nodded to himself, certain that Kikyou’s words, no matter how spiteful and angry, were true. He recollected how must he had inflicted misery on Kagome by his wild wishes of being forever with Kikyou, and it had taken until this moment to realize just how much he had thrown away. He was confident Kagome would have never been so ill with him…no matter what he did. And now she was gone? He was a fool!

“Kagome!” Inuyasha wept out her name without knowing he had done so, but he blinked wearily and then fell forward with his face in his arms again, loosing all control. “Kagome come back to me!” He was stiff before, but now his back and shoulders heaved with him, Miroku peeking delicately out from the tent’s entrance with a look of unsheltered pity for his friend. He still did not approach though, knowing that this was an internal battle Inuyasha must face alone. No matter how many tears he might cry. Inuyasha refused to move, and his crying reclined a bit, so that he muttered to himself with an agonized whine. “Please come back to me...Kagome.”

The halls were dark…endless almost with their shadows. The floors themselves were dirty and unkempt, grim having sullied nearly all aspect of the once perfected marble. This was the dungeon. And it was most definitely not empty.

Kagome lifted her head, her eyes irritated from the stirring dust when she twisted in her shackles. It was a moment of déjà vu, only this time there was no royalty in the room she was in at Sesshomaru’s castle. This was a place of seething evil, the smells making her gag and tightly hold her mouth closed. Her gaze spotted something to her left, and then another to her righut nut nothing made a sound of moved besides her. Taking advantage of this, she shook against her binds, leaning forward with a straining groan.

It was a lot to handle. First she had been rudely hit by reality on discovering how Inuyasha felt toward Kikyou, she was captured and raped by Sesshomaru, she was promptly treated by Sesshomaru, she was kidnapped by Naraku in the gardens, and now she was -here-. Faintly, Kagome felt a small piece of her break…falling away. This infected her with a startled cry, as she realized that she was near the point where the line between sanity and insanity was thinner than it once was. Things that never made sense before now started to become a part of her life, and it scared it. It scared her terribly.

She was busy making quite a ruckus when a thin voice commanded her to stop. She did so, shocked that she was not alone after all, and she looked to her right where she had suspected earlier something had been dwelling. A small form shifted, and she could tell it too was bound, but she squinted all the same, trying to pry further into the silhouette that had spoken to her.

“Don’t try to fight it. It only invites him to come back.” The voice was feminine, delicate with youth but still tired. Kagome tilted her head, puzzled as to what this warning meant, but she shrugged and remained quiet just to appease the stranger.o aro are you?” she asked, trying to whisper. Her throat was dry and felt asugh ugh it had been robbed of all its volume, but Kagome lifted her eyes, hoping that she had been heard.

“I’m Rin. Who are you?” Kagome fought a cry of relief, now knowing that she was holding precious information. She had found Sesshomaru’s dearest! Her debt was nearly paid! Kagome resisted the urge to wriggle with glee, as it was a custom reflex to dance about when she felt she had preformed some worthy cause, and she swallowed mightily to reply. “I’m Kagome,” said, aid, smiling brightly despite her predicament, “and I am going to save you!”

This news was not accepted with happiness as Kagome thought it might be. In fact, Rin laughed under her breath, throwing her gaze down to the ground with a sullen heave of her shoulders. “No one escapes you idiot. Don’t try to fill me with empty hope.” For a child, Rin was certainly mature at heart, her words stinging Kagome and hampering the moon considerably. Kagome nodded however, sorry that she had even said anything of such nature. Rin had been here so long that of course such news would fall with blunt optimism. It could not be helped that Rin was no longer a blossoming young woman, being that this place was her home for these weeks. She was without sunshine…stripped of everything she loved and denied to replace the empty holes in her soul with anything else. She was draped messily in rags; her flesh scarred anisteisted with horrible wounds that were most likely inflicted in a fit of animal frenzy. Kagome could not see this with the lack of light, but Rin’s face was hollow…thin. Her entire body was a mess of bones, having been taunted into behaving by the promise of nourishment. But near being broken, Rin was lost in depression, and found that she no longer wanted the food she was being bribed with. All she wanted to do was die.

Kagome frowned, disturbed by the aura of the little form. “Rin?”

“What?” The reply was dull and had no curiosity in it at all…just a lifeless tone.

“What has been done to you?”

“The question is not what I have don> to> to her, but what there is left to do.” Naraku had unknowingly trailed his way down the steps leading to his prisoners, his face contorted with ghastly content. Rin said nothing to this, but she shrank back a bit, her eyes squeezed tightly shut. Kagome, still unable to see anything at all, looked about in wild confusion, trying to determine just who was ing ing and where they were. She trembled, yanking on her shackles with all the strength she had left, and fell back against them once she could strain no more. “I think we need some light in here.” Naraku’s voice was thick, heavy with wine, and he clapped his hands with a terse flick of his wrists, bidding them all with a bath of warmth from the flames that sprang obediently in their torches.

Kagome, who was normally guilty of such, had a rather comical reaction. She had been at first looking in Rin’s direction just before the fire was born, and her brown eyes flickered dramatically at the shape the girl was in, her concern quite evident. The other girl only looked down at the floor again, pouting her chapped lips with a soft sigh, and said nothing to ease Kagome’s mind. Then next Kagome’s eyes wandered to her left, where she had made the mental note that another person was there, and her face paled, expressionless at her surprise.

Kikyou’s hands were bound, but differently that the other prisoner’s, with the fingers draping down at her sides. A wicked splash of blood decorated her chest, her head rolled and fastened awkwardly to the side in order to expose the twin marks on her neck, which was the source of her blood loss. Shackles were more populous on heat Kat Kagome and Rin, pinning everything from her head to her feet, which were flatly supporting her on the marble floor. She was indeed in worse shape, her lips pale and parted slightly as she took shallow gasps of air. She was unconscious…barely clinging to any life she had stolen. Kagome whispered something under her breath, tears wetting her cheeks, before she lunged forward, spitting hard words at Naraku as he sauntered nearer.

She had hardly spoken a full sentence when Naraku hit her, his hand rapping on her face. She rocked back, eyes wide and filled with sparking pain. Her chains rattled, causing Rin to look up and bit her tongue to avoid crying out to the possible rescuer, but as Kagome fell forward again, she did not seem to be sorry of anything she had said. Naraku’s brow raised with interest at this thought, and he struck her again, his smile mocking the victim. When the body stopped shaking from the two blows, he reached up and drew his fingers along the tender line of the breasts, crimson springing under the talons as they worked. He was malicious, grinning as a child might when rewarded with a bit of chocolate after a hard day. It was a few minutes later, but finally he made his final mark, having carved his name over the entire area of Kagome’s chest, the words barely read under the bright scarlet that fled from the lines. Rin made a whimpering sound deep in her throat as she watched, but Kagome only gurgled up a mouthful of spit before defiantly ejecting it on Naraku’s unsuspecting face. He drew his hand back and hit her with it, at last letting it be known that she got to him, a thick frown replacing the previous grinfragfragile trail of blood dribbled from Kagome’s lip, and she flushed bright red with her unspoken anguish, but she stubbornly turned her nose up at the man, refusing to let him defeat her.

    This was a stupid mistake.

[Writer] I feel so bad when I write Inuyasha being treated this way -weeps- Is everything started to make more sense now? -nods- I thought it might. But there shall be more revealing of secrey thy the next chapter! I'm guessing we'll have...about 8 more chapters by the time I'm done. But I shall work hard to make it good! I shall I shall!
