Chapter Nine: Sunrises are for
the Happy Seeking
“Hey Kagome!” Ayumi called out as
she caught up with her plodding friend. “Hello? Anyone there?” She waved a hand
in front of Kagome’s eyes but there was no response. Walking beside the silent
girl she had known for so long, Ayumi once again tried to understand the change
that had come over Kagome.
In both elementary and middle
school, Kagome had been cheerful, happy and polite. Then as soon as high school
started, Kagome’s personality completely altered. She became more outspoken,
sarcastic and bold; it seemed like the old Kagome had gotten utterly devoured
by whatever had caused the new one to emerge. And I bet, Ayumi thought
with a heartfelt sigh, that the one to cause that change was the same guy
who sauntered through our class the other day. “What a bastard,” Ayumi
mumbled as Kagome’s vacant expression cleared.
“Who is?” the awakened girl asked
her friend.
Ayumi stumbled for an answer,
finally settling on a generic “men.”
Kagome agreed with a nod and a
sigh. “They are, aren’t they?”
Gathering her courage, Ayumi
pretended to come up with a spontaneous idea. “Hey! You wanna go eat out at a
restaurant? We just had that big test and we both did really well so let’s go
out!”
Kagome stared at her exuberant
friend and shook her head slowly. “Nah, someone might be coming over and I have
to be home just in case,” she replied as her thoughts drifted to Inuyasha.
“That boyfriend of yours?” Ayumi asked,
her voice just a bit angry.
Returning more and more to the
present as her best friend’s tone penetrated, Kagome gave Ayumi a questioning
look. “Is something wrong?” she asked finally.
The curly haired girl tightened her
grip on the black knapsack she carried and answered bitingly, “Yeah but you
don’t seem to care.”
Okay, what’s going on?
Kagome wondered as Ayumi stormed off into a local park. Did something
terrible happen and I don’t know about it? “Hey!” she called out as she
jogged to catch up. “Ayumi! Calm down! What’s wrong?”
“You are!” the usually
cheerful girl spat out as she whirled around furiously. The words bursting from
her as if released from behind a dam. “Ever since this boyfriend of yours came
into the picture, you’ve become someone different!” Ayumi’s brown eyes narrowed
and she shook a condemning finger in Kagome’s shocked face. “It’s always about
this guy! Your entire damn life revolves around his schedule! It makes me sick!
You have no time for anyone else but him, you’re almost failing school because
of that ass and now, whenever I try to talk to you, you’re totally distracted
because he’s upset at you!”
“But he’s-”
“Guess what? I’m upset at you!!” Ayumi
shouted angrily. “What are you going to do about it?? I’m your best friend
Kagome. I’ve been your best friend for years and you brush me off whenever he
snaps his fingers!”
”That’s not true,” Kagome protested weakly.
Ayumi scoffed. “Go on telling
yourself that.” Curly strands of black hair fell were brushed over her shoulder
as Ayumi prepared to leave. “I just want to tell you that in case you haven’t
noticed, you’ve lost all your independence. It used to be that you were the
bravest girl I knew and now….now you’ve become this subservient bitch to this
guy. It’s pathetic,” Ayumi spat out. “You’re pathetic. You let some guy run
your life. Where has your pride gone?”
“I have pride!” Kagome shouted. “I
also happen to be in love! When you fall in love, you’ll also-”
Ayumi shook her head in disgust.
“Not that you’ve noticed Kagome but I have a boyfriend!” she replied
witheringly.
Kagome felt her mouth drop open.
“What? Since when?”
“About four months ago and yeah,”
she said bitingly, holding up a hand to forestall any comments Kagome began to
make, “I tried to call and talk to you about it but you were too busy. Couldn’t
come to the phone for about three weeks. Eventually I just gave up.”
The time traveler shifted
uncomfortably. Attempting to apologize would be useless and stupid but the
effort had to be made. “I was…busy,” she said lamely.
“Doing what?” Ayumi said
sarcastically. “Getting laid? Not studying? Lying to your mother?” The
exasperated girl leaned against a tree and sighed heavily. “You aren’t going to
get into college at this rate.”
Kagome blinked. “C, college? Of
course I’m getting into college!”
With those odd, insightful eyes, Ayumi
gazed sadly at her friend. “Really? Have you been studying on the sly?”
“Well, no,” Kagome admitted
grudgingly. “But I’m not trying to get into Tokyo U or something. I just want a
decent college, nothing exceptional.”
“Kagome, you are not going to get
into any college,” Ayumi said bluntly. “You have terrible grades and,
what’s worse, no drive to improve. What will you do when your future is decided
for you, all because you couldn’t be bothered?” Kagome’s mouth was open and Ayumi
went in for the kill. “What is your mother going to say when you can’t get a
job and live at home for the rest of your life?”
“My mother doesn’t care!” Kagome
said defensively. “She just wants me to be happy!"
“Oh please,” Ayumi said
rudely with a snort. “Your mommy doesn’t own the world. What she wants or is
okay with is not what the real world is okay with.”
From a shallow place inside her,
Kagome snapped back, “I make my world for myself and in my world, with the
people I love, I’m doing just fine.”
Her shoulders slumping, Ayumi
turned away. “Never mind. Go back to your silly boyfriend. I don’t even know
why I bothered.”
“Come on,” Kagome sighed. “Don’t be
so melodramatic.”
“Grow up,” Ayumi said softly. “Just
stop living in this little fantasy world of yours and fucking grow up. You are
throwing your life away for some useless shit-ass man. Besides, you as much
admitted that he doesn’t love you.”
Kagome glared, not being in the
mood of discussing the failings of her relationship. “We’re fine and he does
love me.”
“Your song had new lyrics since two
days ago,” the curly haired girl observed cynically. “Which is the real song?”
Kagome opened her mouth and closed
it. “It’s really complicated,” she finally said.
“I’m not the one failing high
school here,” Ayumi said with a raised eyebrow. “If anyone can handle the complicated
stuff, it’d be me, not you.”
Glaring, Kagome muttered a soft
“bitch” at her former best friend but inclined her head to a park bench.
The pair settled and Kagome
fidgeted with her skirt, gathering her words.
“It’s not that he doesn’t love me.
He does. It’s just that he’s had issues for a very long time- personal,
emotional stumbling blocks- that have stopped him from fully committing.”
Ayumi’s brown eyes narrowed.
“Bullshit. You have been having sex with some guy who only loves you partway?
That’s messed up Kagome,” the girl said as she folded her arms belligerently. “Messed
up.”
“It’s not like that,” Kagome softly
said. “Anything he can give, he has. He can’t give me anymore then he already
does. He just doesn’t have room for me beyond the space that I already have…”
“Why?” Ayumi asked, her
incomprehension obvious.
Thoughts on Inuyasha’s complicated
past, emotional issues and his strong self preservation instincts all warred in
Kagome’s mind and battled to be said. In the end, she merely summarized.
“I guess you could say he has a
prior engagement.”
``````````````````````````````
Inuyasha settled into the modern
era with the same familiarity one feels with an old wound, aching but
manageable. The usual putrid smells bombarded his nose and the raucous noises
assaulted his sensitive hearing. Inhaling deeply, he drew in Kagome’s
refreshing scent and used it as a balm on his bruised conscious and abused
senses. Following the trail of a particular human’s sweat and skin, Inuyasha
leapt into Kagome’s frilly bedroom. Balanced on the windowsill, he paused for a
moment and stared at her sleeping face.
She looks happy, he thought
with a sad smile. She always looked most at peace when she’s asleep.
Creeping forward, using all the stealth in his possession, the half demon moved
to her bedside. Brushing hair away from her closed eyes, Inuyasha wondered if
it would be best if he just left her alone. Kagome sighed and shifted away from
his lightly touching fingers, the tickle they produced disturbing her rest.
Inuyasha stared pensively at her. I
can’t let go. I need her.
A small voice in his mind asked
what Kagome needed but Inuyasha ignored it. What Kagome needed was him. All
we need is each other. Without her, I’d be nothing and without me, she’d
probably be dead. Her cheeks were shaded pink with natural color and her
chest rose and fell with her deep breathing. Maybe it’s the other way
around? Maybe
I’d be dead without her and
she’d be, well, not nothing but less then she was now.
Inuyasha lifted the blanket and
smiled when he saw Kagome in a simple matching white set of bra and panties.
For a moment, he considered waking her up with a few well placed kisses and
licks. About to suckle on her sensitive ear lobes, he stopped as the dark
circles underneath her eyes registered. He was torn between caring and lust for
only a moment.
Tucking the covers back around her,
Inuyasha gently rested his head next to hers, grateful to just be near her.
Comforted by the smell and sounds of the one person who loved him, he drifted
off with one hand tangled in Kagome’s black hair and the other clutching
Tetsusaiga.
```````````````````````````
For a moment, Kagome was unsure of
why she couldn’t move. Attempting it merely caused a sharp pain at her scalp.
Shifting minutely she spied a familiar red and sighed soundlessly. Lifting her
hands to her head, Kagome gently unraveled herself from his sharp claws and
rose up onto her elbows. Looking down at him, all her hurt came flooding back.
Closing her eyes, she barricaded herself against the pain of seeing his back as
he snapped impatiently “I got what I came for.”
Wincing to herself, Kagome bit her
lip and tried to resign herself to her lover’s moods and rudeness. After all,
she chided herself, didn’t Kikyou say it best? “I would not have him suffer
simply so I could be happy.” That’s what I should be thinking like! Not whining
about how he says mean things. I know he doesn’t mean them.
Rubbing a piece of smooth, almost
silver hair in between her fingertips, Kagome wondered what her life would be
like without the argumentative and passionate hanyou. Boring, she
decided facetiously. Nodding to herself, she muttered aloud, “Definitely
boring.”
“You’re talking to yourself again.”
Surprised, Kagome stared into an awake
Inuyasha’s golden eyes. His pupils were contracted against the morning light
but never wavered from her face.
“Good morning,” Kagome said, her
voice cool and distant. “Can I help you?”
Moving off her bed with
unconsciously sensual movements, she moved to put on a t-shirt.
Inuyasha rubbed his tired eyes with
one hand. He knew precisely why she was so furious. “Don’t be like that,” he
said quietly. “It…it just popped out. You know I can barely control what I say
when I’m upset.”
Kagome switched her top, throwing
the unused one to the floor. “You use that excuse a lot,” she informed him, her
tone not a bit warmer.
“I know,” Inuyasha admitted, all
but stating an outright apology.
“What pissed you off?” Kagome
asked, changing again with sharp movements. “I didn’t do anything to deserve
that.”
Inuyasha sat up quickly, his eyes
wide and horrified. “Of course not! It was me! Not you,” he whispered. Moving
off the bed, he touched Kagome’s shoulder tenderly. “It’s never you…” Sighing
as the girl refused to comment, he nuzzled her neck with his nose, silently
begging for forgiveness.
Swallowing, Kagome tried to remain
angry but it was so hard. It was so difficult to keep the clarity of mind that
came when she was raging against his stupidity when he was acting so
apologetic. His scent was all around her and his fingers were stroking her into
a complacent arousal. Forcing her eyes to remain open, she stepped away before
she fell completely under his spell.
“It was mean.”
“I know. It was a horrible thing to
say.”
“I want an apology,” Kagome said.
Inuyasha’s eyes narrowed a tiny
bit. “What do you call all that I’ve been doing and saying?”
Kagome stared at him, her chin
lifting proudly. “Cowardice maybe?” Ignoring his growl of angry protest, she
continued. “Perhaps it’s an apology. But I want a real one,” she demanded, her
eyes sharp and cold. “I want to hear you say it.”
“Fine,” hissed Inuyasha. “I’m
sorry. Are you satisfied now?” he snarled.
Kagome’s eyes softened and became
troubled. “No,” she sighed softly. “Before you meant it. Now you don’t.”
“Damn right,” Inuyasha replied
harshly. “I’m not a trained puppy.”
“I know,” Kagome said, her
shoulders slumping. “I…I don’t know what I want.”
Inuyasha, dying as her scent
saddened, gathered her close to his chest. She snuggled into him gratefully,
feeling her equilibrium realigning itself.
“You know what?” she whispered
after a moment.
“What?” Inuyasha replied in the
same hushed tone.
“I want to see the sunrise,” Kagome
said, taking his hand in hers. “I want to watch the sun rise with you…”
Inuyasha smiled one of his rare,
gentle smiles and swept her up into his arms. Without a word, he leapt out of
her bedroom window and gracefully landed on the roof of the shrine.
While below them Tokyo woke up for
a new day, Kagome sat in her underwear, held tightly against the man she loved
despite her better judgment. Inuyasha settled his head on top of Kagome’s and
she happily relaxed against him.
“This is happiness, isn’t it?”
Inuyasha asked as glorious reds and oranges broke on the horizon.
“Yeah,” Kagome answered. “I think
so…”
