Taking
"Inuyasha."
The half breed turned at the sound of his brother's voice. "What?" he growled, rubbing his shoulder. The throbbing pain was taking an amazingly long time to recede. This had prompted an almost panicked mental check of the lunar day, which had in turn left him with an odd feeling of nervousness. It was the middle of the day- the new moon shouldn't be affecting him, even though he had lost track of the time and hadn't even noticed the dreaded night creeping up on him. But he didn't want to even admit to the other possibility- that Baikal was just that strong. Sesshomaru paused a moment to look at him, and, irrationally, Inuyasha's irritation rose. "What?!" he said again, practically spitting the word.
"Jaken," Sesshomaru said without preamble. "You did not have to do that."
"Whatever," Inuyasha mumbled, turning away from him.
Sesshomaru grabbed him by the shoulder and spun him back around, his eyes narrowed. Inuyasha couldn't suppress a wince of pain at the grip on his shoulder; Sesshomaru's hand fell away as soon as he noticed. "Inuyasha," he said softly, and the half breed glared up at his brother. "Thank you," he said simply, and Inuyasha's eyes flew open wide.
"What?" he asked, sure he had misheard. "Did you just say...?"
Sesshomaru smirked and reached up to brush his thumb over Inuyasha's cheek. "He is mine. You sacrificed for him." His expression grew speculative as he repeated, "You did not have to."
"I couldn't let that psycho walk off with him right out from under my nose," Inuyasha grumbled, but he dropped his head, his hair falling about his face. Truthfully, he had acted unconsciously. He and his brother had been exploring the fortress, Sesshomaru showing him around, when they had both sensed the intruder. They had passed through the bedchamber, taking a shortcut to get to the roof, and Sesshomaru had paused a moment to gather the Toukijin which had given Inuyasha a marginal lead on his brother as he burst out to find Jaken confronted with Baikal. He'd expected it to be Chernobog, coming after Ros, but he hadn't hesitated in pulling the annoying little toad out of danger. Protect had been the only thought in his head, no time for fear... Though interestingly enough whatever Chernobog had done to him didn't seem to extend to Baikal.
Sesshomaru took his chin gently and raised his face, scanning his eyes. "What?" Inuyasha asked, far more softly than he had before. Sesshomaru shook his head and released him, looking away.
"It is not so, so there is nothing to say." His grip tightened on Toukijin as he moved to step past Inuyasha, but the half breed put a hand on his brother's chest and stopped him.
Inuyasha looked intently at his brother. "You thought..." He trailed off, and Sesshomaru was silent a moment before responding.
"Just now, your irritability was reminiscent of... I thought perhaps seeing him had... influenced you." He took a deep breath and glanced at Inuyasha. "But you are unaffected." It was a statement, not a question, but there was an inquiring note to the end of it.
"Yeah." Inuyasha grinned suddenly. "You were worried about me." Sesshomaru's head came up and his eyes narrowed, but he did not deny the allegation. "It wasn't that," Inuyasha assured him. "It's not him- just Chernobog. But the sucker really packs a punch." He rolled his shoulder again experimentally. The pain had receded, but the joint still protested his movement and he grimaced.
Sesshomaru was staring at his sword, eyes narrowed intently. "Indeed," he said softly. Inuyasha glanced at him questioningly. "Toukijin did not seem to phase him in the slightest," Sesshomaru confessed. Inuyasha's lip lifted automatically at the mention of the sword, but that was definitely not good news. He might not like it but Toukijin was powerful, and if Baikal had not seemed to be affected by that power... that was not good at all.
"I will seek him out," Sesshomaru said as Inuyasha met his eyes. "He threatened my home. Retribution will not wait."
Inuyasha nodded. A voice in the back of his head whispered that today was not the best day to go chasing after a demon so strong they weren't even sure how strong he was, but he ignored it. He would go with Sesshomaru. He had to. He wasn't even really sure why.
Sesshomaru turned to fix him with a narrowed glare. "Something is wrong," he observed. Inuyasha took a deep breath and shook his head. Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed to slits. "You will remain here."
Inuyasha's head shot up and his eyes blazed. "And where the fuck do you get off telling me what to do?!"
The demon's mouth curled into a predatory grin. "That's better," he said approvingly. "There is no moon tonight, a good night for travel..." And he trailed off as he suddenly fixed his eyes on his brother. Inuyasha could almost see Sesshomaru figuring it out in his mind, remembering, and his chin came up defiantly. It wasn't his fault, and who said he liked being frail and human for a night anyway? But damn it all to hell if he was going to confess weakness to his brother... He waited for Sesshomaru to again order him to remain, or to propose something insultingly ridiculous, like that he ride that dragon thing in order to keep up. But Sesshomaru only turned away and said, "I must speak with Ros." With that, he left.
Inuyasha stared after him. He turned suddenly and punched the wall viciously before stalking down the hall in the opposite direction. He went deep into the mountain, losing himself somewhere in the darkness of back corridors no longer used and breathing in the quiet strength of stone. Some of the rooms were so unused he scented in them what he thought must be his father; a smell almost like Sesshomaru's, only almost completely faded with age and far too gone to determine anything other than that it was not Sesshomaru- just someone who had smelled like him. In his exploring Inuyasha came to dead ends and unfinished hallways, and most of the ways he traveled were unlit as well as unpopulated. That served his purpose just as well; he didn't feel like talking to anyone, and he could feel his way in the darkness just as well.
He paid no attention to the time and when his vision suddenly flickered and dimmed, his hearing became less acute, and the hand he raised to touch to his face no longer bore wicked, curving claws he cursed softly to himself. Well this was just great. He cursed more loudly as he stumbled, trying to find his way back through the maze he had woven down here. His behavior was extremely childish, to become angry and them run away and hide, which just made him all the angrier and with himself.
Eventually he found his way back to the bedchamber. His nose might be dull this night, but he could still smell the sharp tang that was Sesshomaru's scent. His brother was not here, though it had to be almost midnight by this point. Making his way to the narrow door he remembered, Inuyasha followed the staircase up to the balcony where, just this morning, he and Sesshomaru had watched the sunrise. He settled down against the stone wall at the back of the small porch, his face pointed east. He never slept this night. Crazy to think he'd start now. But, he shivered as the wind came up and caught at him, maybe he should have brought a blanket or something. He could go back down and get one... Sesshomaru was probably already gone, departed with Ros. He should have left too- just left and forget about Sesshomaru. He would take care of Chernobog on his own... He shivered.
"Inuyasha."
He looked up sharply to see Sesshomaru standing in the doorway. Conflicting emotions filled him- pleasure fighting with anger. Sesshomaru came toward him and he stood up swiftly, punching his brother in the stomach with all his might. As expected, Sesshomaru shrugged off the blow easily, grunting softly; in the dim starlight Inuyasha saw him raising him arm for a responding blow and the half breed braced himself, willing himself not to flinch. Sesshomaru's hand came down swiftly; Inuyasha fixed his eyes on it stubbornly, expecting the impact. But, inches from his face, it stopped- coming forward softly then to cup his cheek. "Inuyasha," he heard the demon say softly, satisfied. Almost before he realized what had happened, Sesshomaru sat beside him and pulled his unresisting brother against him, wrapping warm arms around him. "Inuyasha," he whispered against the top of the dark-haired head.
Sesshomaru was warm. Inuyasha turned his face against his brother's shoulder, realizing that he was wearing his usual outfit, the silk soft under the skin of his human cheek.
"Father loved you," the demon said softly, suddenly. "I think... that was why I couldn't stand you. I did not wish to share his affection with anyone, particularly not some human who dared presume to take my mother's place, but most especially with her child." He put a hand on Inuyasha's head, stroking through his hair. "He loved you, when you were everything that should not be." Sesshomaru's voice was dark and hard, and Inuyasha shivered against him. The demon's voice softened as he continued. "I was so filled with anger... I could not see what it was that he loved." He inhaled deeply. "I can smell him in you, even on this night."
Inuyasha looked up sharply, trying to search Sesshomaru's face in the dim light. "You're not just saying that?" he asked insistently.
Sesshomaru shook his head. "No," he said.
Inuyasha lay against him, sighing softly. "I don't remember him. Not really. I always used to ask mom where my dad was..." He trailed off, starting again, his voice matter-of-fact, "I figured out pretty early on that even if he had been around, he wasn't like other dads." He looked at his hands, so deceptively human looking tonight. "Mom used to keep me inside on the new moon. She said no one could know. That people would try to hurt me if they knew. She was kinda paranoid about it. She'd probably freak out if she found out how many people have figured it out now. Course, back then, no one really wanted to get close enough to me to figure anything out." His eyelids felt amazingly heavy; Sesshomaru's heart was beating rhythmically under his ear. "Strange..." He yawned. "Strange how now... so many..." He stretched slightly, rubbing his face against Sesshomaru's shoulder as he blinked one last time, losing the battle to sleep as he relaxed completely against the warm body underneath him.
Sesshomaru's arm rested on his brother's shoulder; he raised the other one and draped it loosely around Inuyasha's waist, pulling the human form closer against him as he waited for the sunrise.
--
Several hours later, the sun crept over the horizon seeming to paint Inuyasha's hair pale silver as it touched it. He stirred in his sleep; flicking an ear at a gnat startled him awake to sit up and blink groggily at Sesshomaru who only looked back at him, mild amusement on his face. Inuyasha seemed to remember what the last night had been and glanced at Sesshomaru, even more startled.
"I was asleep," he said in surprise.
"Hmm," Sesshomaru agreed, Inuyasha's absolute amazement at the fact caused a small chuckle to escape from the side of his mouth.
Inuyasha glared at him. "I never sleep on the new moon," he said defiantly. Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at him. "Well, except for..." He didn't want to say anything more about the last time he had seen his brother and what all had happened then. "And that time with the spiders, but I was poisoned, so that doesn't count."
"So," Sesshomaru countered, "You mean to say that you never sleep on the new moon... except when you are drugged senseless- or when you are with me?" He finished the sentence softly.
Inuyasha looked at him. "Yeah. I guess so." He leaned forward, brushing his nose over Sesshomaru's face, sniffing deeply. Everything always smelled better on this morning... He could smell Sesshomaru's amusement, as well as his contentment. Their lips met in a warm soft kiss as they tasted each other.
Pulling away slightly, Inuyasha regarded his brother. "Course that last time doesn't count either, cause I was damned exhausted," he said thoughtfully.
"Hmm? And what about last night?" Sesshomaru raised a hand, brushing the fingers up over Inuyasha's face, tracing the contour of his cheek, up over his eyelid and across his forehead, into his hair.
"Last night..." Inuyasha turned his head and took Sesshomaru's arm between his teeth gently, his eyes flashing mischievously. Sesshomaru's fingers tightened a moment in his brother's hair, but then relaxed, releasing their hold. Inuyasha, in turn, released his grip on Sesshomaru's arm. "Last night I trusted you," he said evenly. He leaned forward, taking Sesshomaru's face between his hands, and stared deeply into his brother's eyes. Their golden color seemed a reflection of his own, so similar were they, and yet he could never have mistaken his brother's gaze for his own reflection- it was far too different.
He shook his head, pushing himself to his feet. "We're wasting time. Is Ros ready to go?"
Sesshomaru's eyes narrowed slightly. "Ros is gone."
Inuyasha looked down at him, alarmed. "Did you talk to her yesterday?"
Sesshomaru shook his head as he rose. "I did not find her. Her scent leads out into the forest in the direction from which we came and no other way."
"She went back to Chernobog." Inuyasha's ears flattened, both in distaste and in apprehension on behalf of Ros. She had defied her brother to come with Sesshomaru... Who know what reception awaited her?
"Get dressed," Sesshomaru said to him, not so much an order as an observation of something that needed to be done, and Inuyasha nodded, heading down to the bedroom. The demon left, not saying where he was going, but Inuyasha could guess. His brother would be checking a few last things before preparing to leave- Jaken, Rin, and a surprise or two for Baikal, should he return while they were away. Inuyasha found his usual clothes folded on a table in the bedchamber. Tetsusaiga lay beside them, and he put the sword in its usual place at his side. Ready, he met Sesshomaru at the front door. The demon glanced at him and nodded sharply. Inuyasha nodded back, and suddenly they were two shadows flitting through the woods, indefinable to the naked eye.
--
Ros moved slowly, easing her way past the guards stationed on the perimeter of the army camp. Technically it was her army as much as it was her brother's, but she wanted to talk to Chernobog before she saw anyone else and army guards were as gossipy as old fishwives; if she stopped to talk to them Baikal would probably hear about it before Chern did and she was hoping to catch her brother without his new "friend."
She slipped inside of Chern's tent and took a deep breath. So far, so good... She turned around and suddenly long, thick fingers wrapped around her throat and she looked up into blazing eyes.
"Br...brother..." she choked out, her hands coming up automatically to pull at his. "Wh...wh...?" She gasped soundlessly, her eyes pleading with him.
"Traitorous bitch." He threw her down roughly. "Tell me you have information on Sesshomaru."
She coughed, rubbing at her throat. "I..." Her eyes narrowed slightly. "What makes you think I have information?"
"You went with him." Chernobog shrugged. "If you do not have information then Baikal was right." Ros' glare intensified at the mention of that name. "And then..." Chernobog trailed off, fixing an eye on her.
"Baikal," she spat. "Everything is not always as he sees it." She had known it would be like this, but she had hoped... She had hoped Chernobog would listen to her.
But her brother's eyes flashed. "You will not speak so of him."
She took a deep breath, lowering her gaze in a non-threatening manner but keeping her voice firm. "Chern, I know you think he's all-powerful. It's because our spells don't affect him, but Chern, that doesn't make him powerful! So he can block magic, and yeah, so he's pretty strong, but Chern..." She looked up at her brother entreatingly. "That's no reason to betray everything Mother believed in. Baikal," she hissed the name, "he destroys everything he touches! You can't let him get a hold on our lands or we'll never recover. Please Chern..."
In retrospect, mentioning Baikal's name had been her mistake; or maybe it had been believing that there was anything left of her brother in the shell Baikal had made of him.
"Traitorous bitch," he growled at her, loosening his sword in its sheath, a mad light in his eyes. "Indeed you have betrayed me just as Baikal predicted. And so it is only fitting that you are repaid with the judgment that he has already laid down for you!"
He raised the sword, and the last thing Ros saw was it coming down upon her.
