He had his pick of the rarest game this way. While the masses of stupefied animals, and the occasional lower-level demon, stood about unaware of what was going on, Inuyasha had simply to reach out and pluck one from the bunch and have his way with it. It was in those odd handful of times that he found himself thankful for his days spent among humans. Their strange tastes in seasonings and tenderness of meat had rubbed off on him, turning him into quite the rustic chef. Sesshoumaru, he recalled with a mild shudder, was far from the same. As strong as Inuyasha's sensibilities were, when he saw those amber eyes cloud and grow murky red, he had to turn away. If there was ever a reason not to fall into his brother's world, the sight of that... animal feeding would definitely be it.
He stared down at the piece of cooked rabbit meat in his hand and shuddered again. The scent was dissipating now, as was the strong underlying aroma of fresh blood. One swing of Toukijin would have been enough to turn that mess into vapor. He shook his head slowly and waited by the fire for Sesshoumaru to return. The light fluttering of clothing moments later told him his brother had arrived.
Inuyasha stared at the demon reclining against a tree a few feet from him as though he'd been there all along. He tossed the last rabbit bone into the fire and watched the light flicker in Sesshoumaru's emotionless eyes.
"That's why full-blooded demons don't bother to eat for months at a time, huh?" he commented, undaunted as those steely eyes focused on him.
Sesshoumaru remained quiet.
"Can't say I envy you none," he went on, folding his arms. "Makes me more thankful to my mom's weaker blood every day."
"Izayoi... was an accomplished hunter," his brother's voice was low and languid. "When the time called for it."
Inuyasha's eyes widened at the off-handed compliment made in his mother's respects.
It has to be the kill, he argued, watching the glazed golden eyes as they shifted from one inanimate thing to another. It makes him completely submissive... He's almost drunk from it...
"She bested a full-grown water demon, once," Sesshoumaru went on, eyes half-lidded. "Father did little to assist her. Merely carried the thing back to the humans' settlement. A wedding gift of sorts. That old fool... If only he'd known..."
He'd never heard his brother speak so freely before in all the years of knowing him. The words seemed to spill forth, unhindered by the stoic self-fortitude Sesshoumaru was known for. He watched the stony features relax slightly, the clawed right hand moving unconsciously to Tenseiga's hilt, resting there almost fondly.
"Misora would have put her to shame, though, I have to admit," the demon murmured with a wry smile. "What else could be expected of a woman such as she? A hateful beast who would curse her own child with the title of 'Killing Perfection'... Though, having lived within her shadow, he's become quite inured to that ominous name... Isn't that right, Inuyasha?"
"Your... mother?" be breathed in answer, barely able to contain the shock in his voice.
He's out of his mind. He doesn't even know what he's saying!
"Did you know," Sesshoumaru said lowly, his eyes narrowed at the hanyou intently, "that once satiated, an inu-youkai with mixed oni blood has an additional set of senses so powerfully heightened, it is as though even thoughts can be heard from the creatures that surround it?"
Inuyasha stared dazedly at the demon across from him, holding his tongue as Sesshoumaru's gaze lifted to the moon above them. The idea that the man before him could be capable of reading his thought was too strange to even begin to comprehend. Granted, it would shed some light on why, besides those few times he'd been deliriously out of his mind in battle, it had seemed as though his brother was predicting his every move. It would also explain why Sesshoumaru preferred to shun any type of contact with humans and demons alike; why, in their time together, he'd never once seen the demon sleep. He could only imagine how deafening inside one's head must be to someone else.
But if he was to believe this, there being no reason for the demon to lie, then the other half of the unspoken thought would have to be true as well. And this he could deem plausible, by his brother's widely varying array of self-maintained poisons. By the strange and intoxicating waves of youki that bore power beyond any demon's he knew. And by the almost ethereal glow of blood and magic that ran in intricate laces just below the demon's skin, flushed and made infinitely clearer by this recent hunt.
If all this was true, then the two bore more in common now that Inuyasha had thought. Because it would mean that Misora was not an inu-youkai as their father had been. And would also mean that as steadfast in his resentment of Inuyasha as his brother was, Sesshoumaru had confessed himself to be a half-breed as well...

"You'll have to promise to visit soon," Ms.Higurashi smiled, bowing slightly before she was pulled into a warm hug.
"It was good seeing you again, Ms.H," Inuyasha said, releasing her. "We'll gladly come by again soon. Misako's due to deliver in two months. I know she'll be happy for a little time in the country."
They stood next to the car, the mid-afternoon sun dimmed by passing patches of fluffy white clouds. Kagome wiped away a tear, moving out of the way as Kimi walked by, handing Buyo to a slightly blushing Souta.
"Take good care of him till I get back," the little girl commanded in a tone strangely similar to her father's. Turning at the last minute, she planted a kiss on the boy's lips, climbing into the back seat of the car and waving out the window. "Bye, Souta! Bye, Buyo!"
Kagome waved as the girl called out a quick farewell to her and her mother. She nudged her brother playfully, laughing as he buried his heated face in Buyo's furry belly. Amaru glided past, coming to a stop just in front of Inuyasha.
"You are capable of finding your way back, aren't you?" he asked evenly, pulling the car keys from his pocket. "No risk of getting lost in some godforsaken forest, pinned to a tree by the scruff of your miserable neck?"
Inuyasha laughed. "Would you just get in the car? I got us here just fine, didn't I?"
Sesshoumaru nodded slowly, placing the keys in the hanyou's outstretched palm. "Then this is where I bid you farewell, brother."
Inuyasha gawked at the keys to the brand new Mercedes and frowned. "You're joking, right?"
An arched eyebrow and a grim downward look at the boy gave him his answer.
"Right, right," Inuyasha amended. "'This Sesshoumaru neither kids, nor does he enjoy repeating himself.' Well, I'd better get lost before you change your mind. I'm not sayin' thank you, I hope you know. You owe me for that motorcycle you took your jollies out on a few years back."
"I'd think you'd have gotten past such trivial things, Inuyasha," his brother chided in an unfazed tone.
"It was a Suzuki classic!" Inuyasha argued. "And don't tell me it wasn't worth anything 'back then.' I'd be dirt rich if I still had the damn thing, no thanks to you!"
The two parted in a brotherly huff, and Ms.Higurashi put in a final goodbye before Inuyasha started the car and began pulling out of the driveway.
"You wrecked his motorcycle?" Kagome asked in disbelief as the car drove away.
"As far as he knows," Amaru murmured, coming to stand directly behind her as her mother and Souta headed in.
Her brows knitted, arms folded as they turned toward the house. "You can't honestly tell me you stole something like that from your own brother?"
He laughed. "Stole? No. Inuyasha received payment for the bike. And the amount put into repairs was more than sufficient for clearing one's conscience in the bargain."
She rolled her eyes, ignoring the affect his closeness was having on her.
"So how do you plan to get home?"
"Hey there, Kagome!"
She turned her attention to the shock of sandy blond hair headed up her walkway. Yutaka grinned at her, his pace slowing only slightly as he spotted Amaru looming just beyond her shoulder.
"Here," he gushed, pressing something into her palm before shoving his hands into his pockets and staring openly at Amaru.
She looked down at the blue and yellow stubs in her hand. "Tickets?"
"For the fair," Yutaka explained. "One for you, one for Souta, and one for that friend you mentioned. Hey... Don't I know you from somewhere?"
The last question was directed at Amaru, who stood stock still, watching the boy with little interest. Kagome pocketed the tickets, thanking an oblivious Yutaka, who stood scrutinizing the man at her side.
"Hanataka Incorporated, right?" he insisted, the barest hint of recognition in his eyes. "Can't mistake that white hair anywhere. You look just like that guy on tv who took over the Hanataka hotel empire. Kenshin or something?"
"Kiken?" Kagome volunteer breathlessly, her eyes trained on Amaru's impassive face.
"Could be Kiken," Yutaka said with a shrug. "Couldn't be you though, huh? What'd a world-renowned quad-trillionaire be doing out here in the countryside when he could be living it up in one of those awesome hotels?"
"What indeed?" Amaru asked, the barest hint of amusement in his voice.
"Right... Anyway, I just came to give you the tickets, Kags. Hope you can make it."
At that point, he grinned, turning and trotting back the way he came. As he reached the dusty road and made to go on his way, he turned.
"Watch out for the rich, the blond, and the cryptic, Kagome," he called out, laughing uproariously at his own pointless joke before bursting into a catchy whistling chorus as he took off down the street.
"Companion of yours?"
Kagome blushed. "Hardly," she grumbled, turning her face away.
"I would hope not," his voice came, dark and ominous. "I would hate to have to maim the poor fool for overstepping his bounds. Disregarding the 'blond' crack, of course."
She whirled around, eyes wide at the very real, and very menacing threat in Amaru's tone, only to find the walkway behind her empty. Kagome looked about frantically, a blush rising to her cheeks as she realized he had vanished. She hugged herself, despite the warmth of the afternoon, and squelched the goose pimples that broke out along her skin.
"These are the consequences that come with bearing my Lord's attentions..."
She gasped silently, looking about before she realized that the words had come from her own mouth.
What's happening to me? she wondered, lowering herself slowly to the uppermost porch step.
"When you fall, you fall hard, Kagome," she sighed miserably to herself. "And now the craziness starts to set in. You're talking to yourself."
Shaking herself from her state, she gave a frustrated groan before rising, flinging the front door open, and storming inside.
