Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha, nor make money from this story. |
This part is much more recent, but I've all but eliminated it on the grounds of thematic inconsistency. The "Dust Bowl" has become the "Silent Planet" and it's supposed to be hellish place on which the remnants of Earth's demon population fight for their lives against Naraku and his horde of saimyousho. Therefore, I can't have any of them enjoying themselves and playing games while the rest of their planet goes to hell.

Chapter III: Blue-Eyed Murder
~The Dust Bowl, 2064 Common Era~Deep beyond the spiritual barrier of the Soul Divide, youkai were gathering by the thousands in one single place. Demons of all types: bulls, dogs, cats, snakes, foxes, every single kind - they were flocking in strength to a giant stadium at the bottom of the Dust Bowl.
It was Tournament Day.
To be exact, it was actually day six, but it was a crowd attracter nonetheless.
An elementally hellacious bout had just concluded down on the tournament ring, which was an oxymoronic title, as it was really a tile square. Many tile plates had been cracked beyond practical repair and others had been destroyed completely by the power-filled footwork and movement of the previously warring opponents. Both fighters, one an inu-youkai and the other a ryu hanyou, had lain each other out with their last assault and they lay flat on their back at opposite edges of the ring. Neither one was conscious. The stadium's announcer, a meek raccoon demon by the name of Hachi, scratched the back of his furred neck and cleared his throat before speaking into the wireless microphone he held.
"Demons and demonesses, we have a true rarity on our hands here! If neither fighter stands back up, then we will have witnessed a double knockout!"
Hachi jogged to ringside to take a closer look at the two fighters. Indeed, both were incapacitated and only the silver-haired dog demon appeared conscious. He lifted his head up in an attempt to look over his chest and past his boots at his dragon opponent, but groaned, faltered, and let his head fall back to the ring floor with a dull thud. Certain that neither warrior was going to rise up, Hachi began to knock his paw onto the ring floor in synchronization with his verbal countdown.
"One! Two! Three!"
The dog demon stirred and gritted his teeth, willing all of his remaining strength into his legs.
"Four! Five! Six!"
The inu drew his right arm back and lifted his upper body by bracing on his forearm.
"Seven!"
He rolled onto his left side and drew a knee up underneath him.
"Eight!"
He pushed his body up into a kneel.
"Nine!"
As Hachi began to utter the first sounds of the "ten", the persistent dog demon roared and bolted to his feet, quivering there on his feet for the torturous moments it took for Hachi to end the countdown.
"TEN!"
The dog demon simply stood and wavered in place, his arms slack at his sides, a silly, fanged grin of victory crossing his face as realized that he had won his battle. He looked up the nearly-destroyed tournament ring at his unconscious foe, admiring the handiwork of his fists. He then shifted his half-conscious, amber-eyed gaze to a dark, shadowed balcony several rows up in spectator stands. Weakly, he lifted his right arm up to that balcony's occupant, smiling and extending his thumb skyward as a sign of triumph.
At that moment, he collapsed, falling to his knees and then onto his stomach, retaining his smirk, even while asleep.
For a moment, Hachi forgot that he was supposed to announce the outcome of the bout, and kicked himself mentally for not doing so.
"The battle is over! The winner is the demon lord Shyushu, former ruler of the Japanese Eastern Lands! He advances to the semifinals!"
The crowd roared in approval. Shyushu was the resident crowd favorite, as the stadium was located in the inu-youkai section of the Dust Bowl. The battle concluded, a number of ring attendants emerged from the waiting tunnel that run a circuit underneath the spectator stands, the place where the fighters waited and prepared for their next fight. Two pairs of them carried stretchers, and the ones following them carried wooden crates loaded with ceramic tiles. The medics proceeded to roll the withered warriors onto their carrying stretchers and cart them off the battle ring, while the other went about repairing the damaged tile floor.
Hachi lowered his microphone and walked over to a large dry-erase board on which the tournament match-up diagram was drawn. The recently finished bout signaled the end of the second tier of the tournament. Only four fighters remained. The first was Shyushu, two others were no-name imports from outside the Soul Divide, and the fourth was one of the most well-known figures in the Dust Bowl.
Kouga.
The tall wolf-demon stood at the waiting tunnel's doorway, leaning against the cement wall with bare arms crossed. Even in the 21st century, he wore his hair in high tail with a dark green bandana around his head. However, he no longer wore steel armor or his fur wrap, instead favoring a loose-fitting, dark brown fighting gi, with the silhouette of a howling wolf sown onto the back.
He had been watching Shyushu's fight quite carefully. Sesshoumaru and old mutt-face aside, the Shyushu was one the very strongest demons around, outclassed only King Yamma and the Inu no Taisho himself, his brother. Without the shards of the Shikon jewel in his legs, the ookami youkai predicted real trouble ahead and began to think his chances of a tournament title were less than optimal.
Kouga stepped out of the doorway to make room for the tournament medics, who carried both Shyushu and his dragon enemy through and out the doubled steel doors on the opposite wall. Returning to his standing spot, he observed the changes in the tournament diagram up on the giant-screen TV mounted on the rear wall of the spectator stands. He frowned and raised an eyebrow when he read the name of his next opponent.
Juunanagou.
"Number Seventeen? What the hell kind of name is that?" Kouga wondered.
Evidently, it was a popular one, as the fighter slated to face Shyushu was named Juurokugou - Number Sixteen.
A soft, feminine voice and a tap on the shoulder startled the musing wolf.
"Hey, Kouga, something wrong?" Ayame asked.
Kouga jumped at the surprise, and whirled around to face the opposite direction. He sighed in relief at the sight of his mate.
"Oh....hey, koi. Nah, it's nothing."
"Want a drink before you win?" Ayame asked cheerfully, holding up a bottle of water.
"Yeah, thanks."
Kouga took the bottle out of Ayame's hand, opened it up, and took a healthy swig of water. He then felt his mate throw his free arm over her shoulder and snuggle up to him, laying her red-haired head on his chest.
"Who are you going to fight?" she asked.
"Some joker named after a number; probably a pushover, anyway."
"You could beat him even if he wasn't" Ayame said.
Kouga smiled and layed his head an Ayame's. Even though he had been a jerk to her in the past and convieniently forgetful of his marriage vow to her in the past, she was loyal to him, supportive, and loving at all times. For that, he loved her back. They stood there together, watching the the tournament engineers reassemble the tournament ring.
Two ookami idiots ruined the moment.
They came hurtling around the curved corner of the waiting tunnel, crashing head first into Kouga and Ayame, all four of them landing on the floor. Kouga and Ayame rubbed their heads for a moment, then discovered that it was their underlings Ginta and Hakkau that had mown them down.
"Rule One of Fighting, idiots.......always watch where you're going!" Kouga yelled.
Ginta and Hakkaku immediately picked themselves up and stood bolt upright and at attention. Both wore a fighting gi like Kouga's
