Chapter 9:

It was an awkward silence between them. Kagome glanced around, trying
not to look at him while trying to look at him at the same time. "You need
something to wear." She looked for the blanket she had given him. "Uh...
where is the blanket that I gave you?"
"Under the mattress." He said without looking at her.
Kagome went to the torn and dirty matress then looked underneath it.
She pulled it out and held it close. "You..you hid it?" She caught herself.
He had hidden it from Kikyo so she wouldn't have taken it from him...or
known someone had been there...like her.
Allowing a secret smile, she walked to the bare hanyou and held it out to
him. "Put this on for now. We...I'll take you upstairs to my room. I may have
something you can wear."
At first he didn't move then reached out and took it from her with
careful movement. He covered himself with it and waited.
Kagome turned and began walking to the door. "You can follow me upstairs."
She looked around to see he wasn't following. Then she remembered the
barrier. Taking a chance, she went back to him, reached into the blanket,
took his hand, then began pulling. He went but seemed hesitant, pulling
back on her hand as she led him.
"Don't worry. This should work." She said, trying to reasure him.
Kagome neared the line of beads and bones and began to concentrate,
feeling within herself for the power she knew was there.
She crossed the barrier line, then he did too with only a light
crackle around his body.
Kagome looked back at him. "Was that so bad?"
His eyes were downcast, hiding himself from her.
She sighed to herself and led him out the door.

They went into her room.
Kagome pointed to the bed with a smile. "You can sit there while I try to
find you some clothes."
Inuyasha sat down.
She rummaged through the dresser, found some clothes, then turned to see
Inuyasha looking at the pictures on her nightstand.
"That's my family: Momma, sota, grandpa, and buyo the cat." Kagome said
while placing the clothes on the bed
between him and the nightstand. She pointed to the other one. "And that...
that's my boyfriend: Hojo."
His amber eyes studied the pitures, lingering on Hojo's before looking
at the floor again.
Without thinking, Kagome looked at Inuyasha's ears. They were so fuzzy,
so fuzzy and perky it made her want to touch them. Then, she noticed
his long white silvery hair. It was so pretty but so dirty.
Her breath caught when she stumbled on the dark amber eyes staring back
with what seemed to be irritation. "Uh, Oh, sorry. I was staring." She
pointed to the bathroom. "You should...take your clothes in there and freshen
up. Take a shower, or bath, or something."
Still frowning, he looked at the bathroom and picked up his clothes.

Inuyasha didn't feel like talking. He still had much pain running
through him from Kikyo's attack. After picking up the clothes she had
laid out, he went to the bathroom and shut the door.

He looked at the bath tub.
It had been a long time since he had taken a shower or bath, about ten
years or so. After his mother died, he left their home to live in the
wild. No one had known about him. His mother had never told anyone.
She said it was to keep him safe and he understood this. Humans and Youkai
didn't mix. He realized that when his father died....

Pushing old memories away, he placed his clothes on the hamper and
turned on the shower. He let the blanket around him fall to the floor before
stepping into the tub and pulling the pink shower curtain back in place.

The water was hot and it felt really good. Brown water swirled into the
tub and down the drain. He picked up the floral shampoo then sniffed it
before crinkling his nose. "Great. Flowers. I'll smell like flowers."
He thoroughly washed his hair with the shampoo before washing himself
all over with soap.
After turning off the shower, he stepped out of the tub and grabbed the
towel hanging by the sink. He dried off and picked up the clothes. It seemed
to be a pair of gray sweat pants and a large white t-shirt.
He dressed then opened the bathroom door to find Kagome sitting on the
bed. She had changed into a long pink nightgown.
The girl smiled at him as he stepped into the bedroom. He looked away
and stood there, waiting. What was she going to do with him? Could he leave
this place? Just walk out? But...the wolf youkai couldn't leave...and there
had to be a reason for that.
She stood up from the bed. "I don't know what to do. I don't want to
take you back to the basement. Do you sleep?"
Inuyasha shrugged his shoulders. "Sometimes." He really needed it this time
though. He needed to sleep for a day or so just to heal but that might
not happen. The floor would be good enough. He looked at it and waited.
She glanced around with nervous movement before sighing. "Take my bed,
I'll go sleep on the couch." She said, gesturing to the bed.
Stunned, Inuyasha watched her grab one of the pillows, go into the bathroom,
come out with the blanket she had given him then head to the door.
He raised a hand and opened his mouth. "Uh.." She was going to let him
sleep on her bed?
The girl smiled at him before closing the door.
Inuyasha stared at the door, then the bed. He sat down on the softness.
He needed this. He needed it badly. Lying down, he closed his eyes and
let the sweet darkness of sleep take him away.
