Kagome's mother peeked into the dark bedroom with a look of concern on her face. Kagome hadn't left her room for a week, with the exception of eating dinner and going to the bathroom. She could tell that her daughter had lost at least five pounds already, her normally bright eyes were dull and lifeless with dark circles under them. The bubbly and happy personality was gone; when she was at the dinner table she never spoke unless she was asking for something across the table that she couldn't reach. Mrs. Higurashi was very concerned with her daughter's behavior. She hadn't been to Rin's house the entire week.
Then it hit her; maybe Kagome and Rin had a falling out. The two had been inseparable for the past three years, even more so lately, so that had to be why Kagome was so depressed.
She took on last glance at her sleeping daughter before closing the door to her bedroom and going to the kitchen for the phone. The familiar number was dialed and she waited for an answer.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Rin! This is Kagome's mother. May I speak to your father please?"
"I don't know if he is awake. He hasn't been feeling very well. I'll take the phone to him."
"Thank you, darling."
There were noises of Rin walking through the house telling someone to shush, someone who Mrs. Higurashi assumed to be her boyfriend, and finally knocking on a door. She barely heard the muffled conversation but snapped back to attention when another voice came through the receiver. "Hello, Mrs. Higurashi. What can I do for you?"
'A lot,' she thought with an evil grin. She pushed the thought away, there were more pressing matters at hand. "Did Rin and Kagome have a falling out?"
"Not that I am aware of. Why do you ask?"
"Kagome has been depressed all week. She barely leaves her room, only eats to keep her sugar levels up, and refuses to speak unless it is necessary." She sighed. "I am really worried about her."
"Maybe she had a falling out with that boyfriend of hers."
"Boyfriend?" She had never really known of Kagome having boyfriends other than Inuyasha. After that there wasn't anyone she was aware of.
"You know, the one she brought to the party that night?"
"Ooh," she said, suddenly realizing who he was speaking of. "That was Miroku, a grandson of one of my father in law's friends. A sweet boy, not really Kagome's type. I asked her to take him in hopes that he would help her get over Inuyasha."
"I see. Maybe she wasn't accepted by one of the schools she applied to. She did have her heart set to go to Tokyo University."
"That is a possibility. I'll have to ask her about it. Thank you for your help, Mr. Kouinu."
"Anytime, Mrs. Higurashi."
"Goodbye."
Her farewell was answered by a clicking followed by a dial tone. She just shook hear head. At least now she had a little bit of insight as to what was going on with her daughter. Placing the phone back onto the cradle she set about the kitchen making oden in hopes that Kagome would eat a little more than she had been.
-----
Sesshoumaru sat back on the bed and ran his fingers through his hair. It was hard not to tell Mrs. Higurashi what was really wrong with Kagome. Now he just wanted to be there with her taking care of her, holding her close and telling her that he was sorry for being such a jackass. Then he would force her to eat something. She had to maintain the curves that he loved to run his hands over when they were together.
After she left the night of the party he finished off the bottle of vodka, thanking whoever was listening that there was only half a bottle left so he didn't wake up with a hangover the next morning. His smoking had increased. Rin was surprised to see the ash trays scattered around the house again.
He stood and went to the mirror over the dresser. He sported the same dark circles that he was sure were marring Kagome's normally perfect complexion. He hadn't neglected to eat though he was tempted to. With his father and step-mother working in the same office with him it was hard. Izayoi had forced food on him during the day more times that week than she ever had before when he stayed with them temporarily after his wife's death. As much as he hated to admit it, he would miss her home cooking after things were smoothed over. He had spoken to his mother more times over the week than he had in the past three years. Everything was explained to her and she didn't reprimand him; she was understanding even though the age difference made her about as uncomfortable as the fact that Kagome was her granddaughter's best friend.
The advice from his parents and friends piled up, ranging everywhere from 'man, get some sleep' to 'go get your woman'.
The cellphone on the bedside table vibrated; he had a text message. He picked up the phone and looked at the message, the same one that he had gotten twice a day since the fight. A simple "I love you". None of the messages ever received responses. He just wasn't ready.
It was killing him inside.
Fingers moving quickly he typed the message and hit send.
-----
The phone vibrating on her bedside table shocked her from her trance. Kagome's dull eyes lit up as she flipped the phone open and hit 'read message'. For the first time in a week a smile graced her face as a message just as simple as the one she sent was on the screen.
"I love you, too."
She lay back in her bed and closed her eyes. Hopefully all of the hurting was close to an end.
-----
Mrs. Higurashi looked up from the stove as dinner time neared to see her daughter coming through the door wearing a simple pair of jeans and a sweater instead of her pajamas. Her eyes finally held a touch of life though the circles wouldn't be such a quick fix.
"Do I smell oden?" Kagome asked, smiling slightly.
"You certainly do, dear! It isn't quite ready though. Why don't you go see Rin? I'm sure after a week she would be thrilled to see you."
Kagome nodded. "I think I will do that. I'll be back in a couple of hours, mama."
"That's fine. Be careful!"
Kagome waved one last time at her mother before she went to the linen closet to get a light coat since it looked like rain.
The walk to the subway station was uneventful as usual, though she met a few of her friends from school on the way. The only one who seemed to take any concern for her was Hojo. Hojo had tried to date her multiple times in school but she would never agree. He was ungodly sweet, always looking out for her health and well being. Being the gentleman that he was he offered to ride the train with Kagome until she got to her stop. For reasons unknown Kagome agreed to his company.
"So what are your plans, Higurashi? I can't believe that we are officially adults now." Hojo smiled brightly.
Kagome shrugged her shoulders. "I've got a few applications out though I haven't heard anything from any of the schools yet. I'm really hoping for Tokyo U. so I can be close to my boyfriend."
Her companion looked down at the mention of a boyfriend. "I didn't know you were seeing anyone."
She nodded. "For the past couple of months, right after Inuyasha cheated on me."
"Inuyasha cheated on you?" he said astonished.
Internally Kagome rolled her eyes. He was so over dramatic sometimes she wondered if he was really gay and just trying to cover himself. "Yeah, but I'm over it. It took that for me to figure out that I wasn't as in love with him as I thought I was."
"Completely understandable."
Her stop came and she got off of the train, waving at Hojo and thanking him for his company even though she was moderately uncomfortable with the entire thing. She still had another ten minute trek to Sesshoumaru's home and it was beginning to rain. Checking her pocket she thanked whoever was listening that she had enough money for cab fare. Finding a cab was a bit of a problem with so many commuters and only limited vehicles but she finally sat in the back seat of the warm car giving the driver the address of where she needed to go.
The cab pulled into the driveway and she paid the fare, giving the driver a few extra yen for a tip. Not even bothering to knock or ring the doorbell she marched into the house like she owned the place, she was a woman on a mission. Her shoes were set next to Sesshoumaru's on the rack, her damp coat next to his in the closet.
She continued to her destination in total tunnel vision, missing Rin and Kohaku on the couch making out like it would be their last time together. The bedroom door came into her sight and got the same treatment as the front door. "Sesshoumaru," she demanded.
Said man looked up from the bed. Kagome's features softened as she took in his tired form. He had the same dead look in his eyes with the same dark circles, hair unkept wearing a wrinkled dress shirt and pants that looked like he had been wearing for at least two days. "Kagome," he replied in the same tone.
Suddenly the ache that she had been feeling for the past week had returned as she was back in the scene of the crime. Without a thought of his feelings on the subject she launched herself at him at a near blinding speed, knocking him backwards onto the bed when her small body hit his larger one. His arms wrapped around her on their own accord holding her tightly against him. Tears ran down both of their faces, kisses planted on whatever skin was reachable by their hungry lips.
"I'm so sorry," he breathed into her hair taking comfort in her scent. "I should have listened."
"It's my fault for not calling you ahead of time," she said nuzzling and biting his neck. "I should have just refused to bring him."
"I've been so miserable without you."
Clothes were shed almost desperately in their rush to feel skin on skin. They both sighed in relief as he slid into her. No more words were spoken; they didn't need them. Their emotions were all conveyed through their longing looks, moans, sighs. For the first time in a long time they didn't feel the need to rush; this time they were going to enjoy each other, the feeling of their bodies moving together.
Sesshoumaru closed his eyes and dropped his head to her neck. He held her so close that there was no room between them. "I'm so sorry," he whispered once again. "I love you."
"Love you too, Sess," Kagome panted.
Their slow lovemaking lasted for what seemed like an eternity for the both of them, though they both knew that eternity would never be enough. He felt her body begin to flutter around him as he rocked into her bringing her to a slow and drawn out release. Happy that she had received as much pleasure as he, he let himself go. After the shudders that took over his body finally subsided he carefully lay over her, trying to avoid putting his full weight on her slight form. He rolled them onto their sides, pulling Kagome close to him and then pulling the comforter over their bodies. All rational thought was gone; the fact that his daughter was home and could easily walk into the unlocked door didn't click in his mind. The fact that she had told her mother she would be home for dinner was completely tossed out of the window.
They were together and all was suddenly right with the world once more.
