A/N: Ok, so I have officially decided to write another fairy tale Inuyasha fanfic based on another story from my book. (my that’s a mouthful) Maybe I’ll even make a whole fairy tale collection *dreams big*….. Hmmm… I think I’ll just take it one step at a time, though, and see how the next one goes first. : ) I’ve already started working on it, but it’s going to take a little time to complete (I think I’ll get that one all written out before I start posting, or at least get a couple chapters down on computer ;p) because for this story I really stripped it to it’s very basic story line and will be writing everything over again to fit that story line, instead of just taking it almost entirely as it is given to me. Although I did make some changes in this story. But it was still not quite as stripped as this next one is going to be. I invite all you guys that enjoyed this one to read it and let me know what you think : )
And lastly, to kookookitty - I’m not telling. It could be either. You just never know in these stories what weird thing is gonna happen next ;p
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Once more the group settled into the room for the night, vowing again to stay awake and this time make sure Naraku never was even able to get the princess from their grasp. Another rescue would not be needed.
~*~
As the first light of dawn peaked through the windows of the castle, the sounds of snoring could be heard clearly throughout it’s many floors.
Their plan to stay awake had once again failed. And when Inuyasha awoke the princess was once more no where to be found.
He quickly woke his sleeping companions and made them aware of her absence.
“Miroku, can you see her?” Inuyasha asked even before Miroku had time to remove his blinkers and look out the window.
“Yes, I see her. Two hundred miles away there is a mountain. In the mountain there is a rock and in the rock there is a precious jewel. That jewel is the princess. Sango will take me there as before, and we shall be back before you can turn yourself round three times.”
As he spoke, Sango had grown to enormous heights and soon the two were off.
She went easily twenty miles at a stride and when they arrived at the mountain, Miroku once more removed his blinkers and fixed his deadly stare on the mountain before them.
There was a tremendous ‘crack’ as mountain and rock turned to dust. Sango reached into the rubbish that was once a mighty mountain and removed the single pink jewel.
They returned quickly to Inuyasha and he barely threw the jewel to the floor when the door burst open, revealing a once more grinning Naraku.
His fury and rage was such, however, upon his realisation that they had once more retrieved the princess, that it was as though a foul wind blew through the room. His face screwed up with hatred, his eyes bleeding red as his hair seemed to stand on end around him. A second iron band burst from his waist and clattered to the floor.
He wasted no time after that. Grabbing Kagome, he fled from the room, leaving the four somewhat shaken companions behind.
They had survived the second night, but only just barely, and they paled at the knowledge that the last night would most assuredly be the most gruesome and challenging of all.
~*~
And so they immediately began plotting. Plotting ways to stay awake, despite the obvious spell that had enchanted them to sleep twice, as well as other ways to assure the presence of the princess in the room at all times.
It was agreed that they would start off by sleeping in shifts. On top of that, Sango and Shippo would stretch and grow themselves out to the rooms capacity, without hurting anyone. Inuyasha swore he would stay standing the entire time. Certainly one could not fall asleep while standing up! And each of them would hold onto the princess (It was agreed that Shippo would have to have incredibly long arms to be included in this, so he was graciously relieved of that duty.).
Their plans were set, and they spent what was left of the day in and out of a tense silence, everyone only too aware that if they screwed up tonight they would join the others that had come before as statues adorning Naraku’s courtyard till assuredly the end of time.
~*~
Night came and Naraku brought the princess.
They got into their positions with the agreement that Shippo would be the first to sleep, and Sango would take the next shift. It did not take Shippo long, however to drift into and easy slumber yet again.
Sango and Miroku were asleep next.
Inuyasha stayed awake the longest. He paced back and forth in what little space there was as he held desperately to the princess as though afraid she were but a puff of smoke and would vanish on a breeze.
And he was right to be so concerned for that was the very thing that seemed to happen, for the minute the spell took hold of Inuyasha, causing him to slump to the floor in a dead sleep, the princess disappeared from the room.
~*~
Dawn came and so did the sickening realisation that they had once more lost the princess.
This time it took longer for Miroku to locate her, and when he did, his voice was sober as he relayed what he had seen.
“Inuyasha, I am afraid she is very far away. Four hundred miles from here there is a deep black sea. In the middle of the sea, at the very bottom there is a little shell. In the shell is a gold ring. That is the princess. We will do our best, but I fear that this time we will need Shippo’s assistance as well, and that will double Sango’s burden. She will not travel as fast. I do not know if we shall make it on time!”
“Then hurry! Leave, before it is to late!”
And so they did, Sango taking amazing pains to carry both Shippo and Miroku, one on each shoulder as she walked the great distance.
When they reached the sea, Sango reached her arm as deeply into it as she possibly could go, but found she could not reach bottom.
“Shippo!” She cried desperately. “Suck up as much of the water as you can! Quickly now!
Shippo immediately began to expand himself. He grew and grew and grew until it seemed that there was not hardly room for him in the world. When he was finished he bent to the water and began to drink it up in great gulping drinks.
He drank for two minutes, until finally Sango could reach her arm into the water deep enough to retrieve the shell and remove the ring. She grasped it carefully in her hand and as soon as Shippo had returned the water to the sea and was once again a manageable weight Sango hoisted them both onto her shoulders and began her return to the castle.
But they were too late.
TBC….
Ok, no, just kidding. No evil cliffie here ;p
~*~
At the castle Naraku strode confidently into the room and was greeted with a most delightful sight. Inuyasha. Alone. In the room. No princess. He had finally won!
He laughed manically and raised his hands to turn the prince to stone.
But Miroku could see this from his great distance away and he immediately implored Sango to throw the ring with as much strength as she could possibly muster.
She did. And she threw it with such incredible aim and accuracy that it hit it’s mark exactly, and just as Naraku’s spell was about to be cast, the ring burst into the room, shattering the window and landing on the floor between Naraku and Inuyasha.
The ring burst. And there stood the princess, as beautiful and sad as ever.
Naraku’s eyes widened. The same horrible screeching sound coming from his throat as the thick purple miasma began to fill the room, seeming to leak from his very pores.
The third and last band around his waist burst into pieces and fell tinkling to the ground.
As it did, Naraku suddenly vanished from the room. What remained was an enormous, mottled spider.
Inuyasha immediately drew his sword from it’s sheath and lunged at the beast.
The battle that ensued was bloody, but Inuyasha had the advantage, and he quickly smote the spider, stabbing it through and ugly bald patch on it’s massive back.
All that remained of Naraku was the miasma, lingering in the room until it finally dissipated.
Naraku was at last defeated.
End
A/N: Well, there you have it. I hope you all enjoyed it. And I hope that that chapter wasn’t too rushed. I realise that it ended very quickly and I’m a little concerned that it ended too quickly. I also hope I didn’t disappoint anyone with the lack of a battle scene - there wasn’t one in the story even remotely (It wasn’t a spider, it was a crow and the prince didn’t even bother to attempt to try to kill it.) but it would have been my first battle scene, and I wasn’t overly confidant about my abilities. Plus it really wasn’t an addition to the story I was looking for. But I hope that the lack of one didn’t disappoint anyone who was looking for one. I know I am going to get so many posts telling me not to worry - that its my story and if some people don’t like it’s their problem- or whatever wonderfully nice supportive things you guys say, and I know, but I still don’t like to disappoint you guys when you have been so good to me. So sorry, once again, if I did.
And for those wondering about loose ends - don’t worry, there’s still an epilogue coming : ). I guess that makes the rushed ending a little better? Anyway, I just wanted to thank all my readers and reviewers for their wonderful support! And hope you enjoy the epilogue (when it comes) Thank you!
