Yay, another chapter done way before schedule. hope you guys enjoy it. Chapter 8: Demon of my Youth “Hey,” Sesshoumaru jerked out of his stupor as a twig collided with his face. “Have you a death wish, hanyou?” “You’ve been ignoring me for ten minutes. I understand you need your beauty rest, but don’t you think we should get moving now?” Sesshoumaru rose to his feet. He crushed the twig in his fingers, then leveled his eyes on Inuyasha. “Throw something at me again Hanyou, and it will be you I crush.” He threw the pulverized twig onto the ground, and walked past Inuyasha. Inuyasha rolled his eyes and followed him. “We both know that if you were going to kill me, you would have. So, you can stop with the pointless threats.” “What makes you think they are threats?” Sesshoumaru said icily as he stared back at Inuyasha, “Keep testing my patience, hanyou. I don’t have to kill you to cause you anguish.” “Listen asshole,” he said, “You’re the one who’s dragging me with you. It’s not like I want to be anywhere near you. ” “The feeling is mutual,” Sesshoumaru said as he walked through the trees. Inuyasha growled, “Do you even know where you’re going?” “Quiet, hanyou,” Sesshoumaru said angrily, “How am I to concentrate when you keep pestering me?” Sesshoumaru lifted his head into the air, his nose twitching slightly. “We’re close.” He broke into a run with Inuyasha following closely behind him. “Close to what,” mumbled irritatingly as he struggled to keep up with Sesshoumaru. Sesshoumaru darted past trees, giving little care to the hanyou that followed him. Inuyasha growled angrily as he dodged another tree limb. “Oof,” he exclaimed as a branch collided with his stomach painfully. He ripped the limb from the tree angrily. “Wait up, ya asshole,” he groused as he ran faster. Sesshoumaru finally glanced backwards. “We’ve no time to waste, hanyou.” Sesshoumaru said, “I realize it may be impossible, but try to keep up. I would think that your hanyou body should, at least, be adept at running.” “Shut up, you jerk, “Inuyasha panted angrily. They had just broken past the trees into a clearing. Sesshoumaru ran into the middle of the clearing, his feet skidded to a halt. Inuyasha caught off-guard collided with his back. “Why’d you stop so suddenly,” he asked as he rubbed his nose which he bruised on Sesshoumaru’s armor. Sesshoumaru didn’t answer; instead his eyes were staring off into the trees as if he could see something that Inuyasha couldn’t. “What’s…?” “I thought I smelled someone familiar.” A woman, with periwinkle hair that reached her waist in thick waves, walked into the clearing. She wore a soft smile on her pale, even toned face. Her eyes held a sort of mystery and mischievousness in their olivine depths. She wore a rose colored silk yukata that rested slightly above her knees. Gold and Azure butterfly were delicately sown into the fabric. Inuyasha stared at them mesmerized before letting his eyes glide over her slightly pointed ears, and the sliver crescent moon that adorned her forehead. She walked slowly, her hips swaying gently. “I wandered when you’d come see me again,” she said with laughter in her voice. She stood before Sesshoumaru, her arms crossed. It was then that Inuyasha noticed the wakizashi at her waist. The onyx handled short sword had a crimson rope around its hand guard, and a navy colored sheath. “I haven’t come to exchange pleasantries. Were it not a necessity, I would never see your face again, Maeko.” Maeko pulled her small pink lips into a pout, “Is that anyway to talk after you haven’t seen me in almost a hundred years?” Sesshoumaru glared at her, but said nothing. She smiled at the angry gleam in his eyes and laughed. “Sesshoumaru, will you never change?” She stared at Inuyasha and surprise flitted across her eyes. “Who have you brought me, Sesshoumaru?” She moved to stand in front of Inuyasha, her eyes boring into his. Inuyasha’s face grew hot at the intensity of her gaze. “Have you a name, child?” “Inuyasha,” he said quietly as he turned his face away from her gaze. “I thought at much.” she said absentmindedly with a hint of surprise in her voice, “Why do you travel with the boy you professed to hate, Sesshoumaru?” “I need your skill, Maeko.” “Yes, I gathered that already, nephew, but why do you need my skill?” Sesshoumaru stared somewhere at her feet, his eyes unfocused. She sighed, “Follow me. I suppose you would like to rest awhile, but do not think our conversation has ended, nephew. I still expect an answer.” “Nephew,” Inuyasha said before she could walk away. “Yes,” she said staring at him curiously, “I am Ariadne’s sister, Maeko.” “Ariadne, who…” “My mother, hanyou,” Sesshoumaru said icily. Inuyasha’s eyes glinted angrily his hands clenched into fists. He opened his mouth to retort, but Maeko stopped him. “Save your bickering for later,” she said turning. Inuyasha clamped his mouth shut sullenly and mumbled as he walked behind the two. The walk was deathly silent. Sesshoumaru was introspective, as if he wasn’t really there. Maeko stared back at him, every so often, wondering what could have done this to him. To the outside observer it would seem he was as he had always been, but she knew different. Something had shaken the great lord Sesshoumaru’s cold resolve. Whatever it was, she knew that it was weighing on him heavily. She wondered if the tenuous grip on his ‘self’ had slowly begun to unravel. The further they walked, the denser the wood became. Inuyasha couldn’t help feeling small as they walked past oak trees that towered over his frame. This forest was old. He could almost feel the history whistling through the trees. Inuyasha could see a small fire burning in the distance. He could make out a roughly constructed hut with a thatched roof. Maeko threw another log into the fire as Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha sat on the grass near the fire, but away from each other. Maeko stared at them for a moment, a disapproving look on her face. “Sesshoumaru,” she said, “Get me more firewood.” She threw the last log into the fire, and glared into his eyes as if daring him to go against her. Sesshoumaru cracked his knuckles menacingly as he stood. Maeko watched in satisfaction as he disappeared through the trees. “Inuyasha,” he tore his eyes away from the fire to stare at her, “Did Sesshoumaru tell you why you’re here?” Inuyasha shook his head. “He didn’t tell me anything. The asshole just dragged me along.” “I see,” she remarked sitting next to him, “how courteous of him. He’s grown to be her twin.” “Whose twin?” “Ariadne,” She answered, “my sister is every bit as cold, if not colder, than he is. Have you ever met her?” Inuyasha shook his head. A look of anger past across Maeko’s face, “It should not have been this way. As a member of the Inu clan, you should not have been left to fend for yourself. I am sorry.” Inuyasha shrugged, “I’m stronger because of it.” She stared at him sorrowfully, sensing the pain he had endured. “I suppose this is the reason why you didn’t know about Ariadne and me. Sesshoumaru has not told you about your lineage?” “No, Myoga did tell me some things, but I wasn’t really interested at the time. He didn’t tell me about Sesshoumaru’s mother.” “I suspect he wouldn’t.” she explained, “He was probably afraid you might look for Ariadne. You would surely die if you did so. My sister has always born open animosity toward you and your mother. This she passed onto Sesshoumaru.” “Is she still alive?” Maeko scoffed, “As if anything could kill her. I almost believe she could slay death.” Inuyasha smirked, “She sounds about the same level as Sesshoumaru.” “He wasn’t always this way, you know. Something changed in him.” “What changed,” Inuyasha asked earnestly. Maeko got to her feet and brushed her fingers across her yukata. “It is not my place to say. Perhaps, Sesshoumaru will tell you.” Inuyasha laughed, “Yeah, then I’ll ask him to lend me tessaiga.” Maeko grinned, “It may be that he’ll surprise you.” Inuyasha jerked to his feet as he heard rustling and Sesshoumaru emerged from the trees. He dropped the wood next to the fire. He met Inuyasha’s gaze for an instant, then turned away. “Are there any more degrading act with which you wish me to perform, aunt?” Maeko rested a finger on her chin, pretending to think, “I think that’s enough hard labor for the great demon lord. I suppose I’ll make us something to eat. I expect you’re both hungry. That will give you a chance to explain exactly what this is all about, Sesshoumaru.” And I’m ending there. Thanks so much for the reviews. They are much appreciated, so thank you. Oh, show of hands, how many of you were surprised Maeko is his aunt:)
