Warmth. The water was so warm: cradling, relaxing away the tightness.
Rin sunk deeper, letting her face go below the steamy surface, covering
her completely. The plip plops from the faucet became distant and muted.
Weightless, she floated
back up, her nose barely above as the rush of her own breathing filled
her head. Knots of stress faded then quiet thoughts began.
Sesshoumaru.
Rin breathed again, deeper, sucking in the scent of sweet soap and shampoo.
Thoughts of him came: ...the color.....that dark amber....
She mulled over what happened, trying to understand the moment, and the feeling
she had at that moment as she had stood before him in the hallway.
The unreadable look, or a look she had never seen before...in his eyes..
in him. It was almost.....
Sighing, Rin sat up in the full sized tub of deep warmth.
The future was uncertain, but at this very moment, she didn't hurt anywhere.
As of old habit, she began inspecting for damage. The stitches
were gone, replaced by very tiny and almost invisible scars.
There were no bruises that she could see. With familiar sadness, she
felt around her collar bone and shoulder, wondering about the scar there.
She hadn't looked in the mirror since waking up in Sesshoumaru's bedroom.
Here, in the bathroom, she had hurried to the tub without even glancing
at the mirror above the vanity sink. The hot bath had been too important
at the time.
How bad would it be?
Now curious, Rin rose while grabbing the towel she had laid on the floor.
Drying off, she stepped up to the sink and dared to look.
For what seemed like a long time to her, Rin just stared at the bite
mark. It was no longer red....or bruised...just a few small pink round dots.
She studied it, lightly touching the scars with the tips of her fingers. His
mark would always be there. Why? Why had he...?
Before, Rin remembered asking him:...when the dog demon was holding her,
he had said he didn't know. So. If Sesshoumaru had told the
truth, That meant he didn't know why he had marked her, and
he had said that he was......sorry. Now they were bound together,
and he never.....he never wanted her to begin with. No. He never wanted her...
like that....
Her heart began to pound at the confusion of it all. Pushing the thoughts
away, Rin dropped the towel and got dressed.

The lines of words began bleeding together. Aggravated, Sesshoumaru
shut the book in his hand with a loud thud. He couldn't focus for the
incessant interruption of thought, thoughts of...her.
Sitting in his study chair, he stared, frowning, at the brightly sunlit
window on the other side of the study, the one where he had first seen Rin as
she was trying to sneak away across his lawn.
The dirty little wisp of a human girl had dared to sneak onto his property,
dared to fish in his pond, dared to run...from him.
What the hell had happened to him? Why? Why had he...?
"Uh."
Sesshoumaru, a bit startled, turned to see the girl standing in the doorway
dressed in a white, lacy blouse and tan skirt that came to
her knees. Several dark brown strands of hair clung to her pink cheek.
The sweet hint of strawberry shampoo tickled his senses.
Biting her lower lip, she twisted the hem of her
blouse while starring at her sandals.
Mouth drying, he managed to speak. "Yes?"
She glanced at him before looking down again. "I...I'm... Would it be
alright if...if I got something to eat?"
He opened the book again, trying to ignore her. "If you need sustenance
then find it yourself in the kitchen.
You have no need to ask me this again."
She left as silently as she had approached. The girl was good at being
quiet: so quiet even he hadn't heard her till she had spoken.
He tried again to focus on reading only to shut the book and place it
on the wood table by the chair.

Rin opened the fridge and found milk, bread, cheese, lunch meat, and an
orange.
After getting it all out, she began searching for a cup in the cabinets.
She found some glasses on a shelf but they were too high up. Standing on tip
toes, she stretched, reaching, almost touching the bottom of one glass but
just couldn't get it. A hand took the glass and brought it down within
her reach. She stared at the glass and hand for a moment before slowly
taking it.
Not daring to look at the inu youkai standing at her side, Rin held the
glass and didn't move. Inches away, she could feel him: his heat, his
presence.
He moved silently away then left the kitchen without a sound.
Letting out the pent up breath, Rin relaxed.

Sesshoumaru stared out the large window to the front drive. Soon, the
movers would be there to remove the soiled bed and bedding. They would
bring the new one he requested: twice as large, along with a much
softer mattress, and fresh linen for.....
He grimaced at himself for even entertaining the thought of Rin lying
on it. They would never.....
No. They would never...

Rin, sitting at the kitchen table, finished the last of her milk, washing
down the last bite of sandwich. Making sure not to leave any crumbs, she
cleaned up the table with a paper towel then picked up the orange. With a
quick glance to the door leading to the hallway and living room, Rin headed
for the room full of windows. It was a sunroom: bright and giving of warmth.
As quiet as she could, she slipped out and into the back yard.
Following a stoned pathway, she hurried to the sweetest spot she had
ever known. The small pond surrounded by flowers, reflecting sunlit waves
of light on the circle of trees on the other side. Again, relaxing, she sat
on the swing she knew well and began peeling the orange. It sprayed her
face with its orangy mist, making her mouth water. She loved fruit.
Actually, she loved all food. Smiling, she began tearing off slices and
eating, thoroughly enjoying the sweet pulp and juice.
After finishing the wonderful dessert, she sat on the swing and stared
at the rippling water while listening to the sounds of early summer.
It was almost as if she was back again, back to when she had
snuck here so many times before. Again and again, she had visited this
pond and swung, loving the beauty of the hundreds of flowers surrounding
it. The gentle wind swept ripples along with the calming smell from colorful
blossoms would lull her away, making her feel,
at least for the moment, safe.
She frowned while her feet barely touched the ground. What would happen
now? The dog demon didn't want her but he had marked her as his. She belonged
to him so she could never have a boyfriend, or anything like that...ever.
She looked at the blue sky, feeling sad. "No boy would have wanted me
anyway." No, her body was way too messed up....
A long time ago, before her father had started getting so rough, she had
liked a boy at school. He was quiet, with long black hair that hid part of
his face. He was the only one who had ever smiled at her. He had kind
and gentle blue eyes. But at the time, she hadn't dared speak and
kept a good distance for fear of what her father would do to her....or him
if he found out. After a while, he didn't seem to notice her anymore and
started going with someone else.
It was always that way at school. No one ever seemed to notice her or
care and the ones that did notice were the bullies who pushed her around
and catty girls who constantly called her a slutty pathetic retard.
School days were now over and it made her feel better in a small way.
Never again would she have to endure the nasty names, hateful words, and
mean looks from most of the students and some of the teachers.
No more torment. No more.
She sighed with the wind. It was alright. Really. She didn't need to have
a boyfriend. All she needed was right here: The sun, wind, grass, water,
trees, and beautiful flowers. This is what had always made her feel better and
now she would always be able to come out here whenever she wanted without
worry. Tummy full, she rubbed it and slipped from the swing to lay on the
cool shaded grass. Above, sunlight played in the green leaves that fluttered
with the wind. A cricket chirped close by.

After the movers had gone, Sesshoumaru stood in the large bedroom,
inspecting the new bed. Indeed, it was twice as large with tall wooden bedposts on
all four corners. Another thinner, softer feather mattress laid on top
of the regular one. The comforter was a dark caramel and the sheets were white.
All of it was the best and finest...
Sesshoumaru, frowning, blinked away the vision of Rin lying across
the covers.
