Chapter 9 - Anger and Hope
*Thunderhead* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
Kagome glared darkly at the screen as she scrolled through Sesshoumaru's timeline. There was picture after picture of the taiyoukai with various girls hanging all over him, always with a drink in his hand. He was out there screwing anything with two legs and no self-respect, and posting it all over the Internet! Okay, he wasn't usually the one posting the photos, but he was allowing himself to be tagged in them. If he was going to be a man-whore, the least he could have done was un-friend her first.
She couldn't believe his behavior. He seemed as if he cared about her, like she was more than just a convenient fuck, but that had obviously been an act. He slept with her, ruined her life, turned her entire world upside-down, and then moved on as if she meant nothing. He hadn't even bothered to call to see if she was okay! For all he knew, she was still in a coma. Hell, she could be dead, and it didn't seem like he would mind at all. A storm was brewing inside her as her anger grew, and she knew it would explode soon enough. If only she could take it out on the one that deserved it
Inuyasha sat on Kagome's bed watching her at her computer, growing more and more concerned about her. Ever since she woke up, she seemed different, and the differences were growing more and more apparent each day. The old Kagome would have been balled up in bed, bawling her eyes out if she saw Sesshoumaru's social media feed, but the new Kagome was pissed. The anger and outrage were rolling off of her in waves, and he found himself thinking that Sesshoumaru was lucky she couldn't leave the shrine just yet. She might just have sought him out and purified his dick right off.
The hanyou couldn't figure out what the hell was wrong with his brother. He had a crush on Kagome for years, and Inuyasha was pretty sure the taiyoukai loved her, so why was he out whoring around and drinking himself stupid? Why wasn't he calling to see if she was all right? Why was he showing no concern about the girl he wanted for so long? He just couldn't understand it, and every time he tried to contact Sesshoumaru, the taiyoukai sent him to voicemail, as if he knew he was doing something wrong and didn't want to hear it.
*The Dark Crow Smiles* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
Their father hadn't been able to explain his elder son's actions to the younger's satisfaction either, and so he had nothing to tell Kagome to try and make her feel better. She really needed to stop checking Sesshoumaru's page, but it almost seemed as if she was feeding on her anger, growing stronger by the day. She was getting downright scary, and he had no idea what to do about it. Her mother and grandfather had no explanation, only saying that she needed time to adjust, but something was definitely wrong with her. She just wasn't the Kagome he knew and loved anymore. She was someone completely different, someone he was wary of.
"Kagome, why don't you stop looking at that? You're only upsetting yourself."
The miko turned and shot him an evil smirk. "What I'm doing is none of your business, half-breed," she said in a dark, threatening tone.
The hanyou's eyes widened in shock. She had never called him that before, and had always chastised anyone who did. "Kagome?"
Kagome shook her head before tilting it to the side. She smiled at her only remaining demon friend. "What?" she asked in her usual friendly tone.
"What did you just call me?"
"Hmm?" she said while turning back to the computer and shutting down the web browser. "I don't remember calling you anything."
And just like that, the old Kagome was back. Inuyasha was beginning to wonder if the release of her miko powers had caused mental damage, because she was acting more and more like two different people trapped in one body. The old Kagome and the new were so different; it seemed to be the only explanation. He had to speak to his father. Maybe the old dog would have some thoughts on the matter.
- *If God Has Forsaken Me* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
Sesshoumaru was desperate. He knew he couldn't continue on as he was. He was in a self-destructive spiral, drinking and sleeping with random women, all in an effort to get Kagome out of his mind and heart like his father had suggested he do. Going to Kagura had been rock bottom, and he knew he needed help. His father gave no assistance, only telling him that Kagome had still not awakened and that she might never do so. Again, he reiterated his advice to move on, but the taiyoukai knew that he couldn't.
Kagome was it. She was the only woman he had ever cared for like this. He was in love with her, and he refused to accept that there was no way for them to be together. There had to be something he could do, some way to be in her presence safely without the risk of purification. He knew she would never forgive herself if she inadvertently hurt him, and he would never risk causing her that kind of pain.
Sesshoumaru had no idea that Kagome was awake, let alone aware of his activities. He had refused all of Inuyasha's phone calls, deleting the voicemails without listening to them after the first few. All the hanyou was doing was ranting about him not coming home, all the while blaming him for Kagome's condition. He knew it was his fault. He didn't need to hear it over and over again.
*Lacrimosa* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
With nowhere else to turn, he went to see someone he hadn't visited in a very long time: his mother. She took one look at him and knew that something was seriously wrong. She pulled her estranged son into her arms and held him tightly, surprised when he burst into tears. Yes, something was terribly, terribly wrong for her strong son to cry like a baby. Misaki whispered comforting words to the young demon and ran her fingers lovingly through his hair right there in her doorway until he managed to compose himself. Then, she invited him inside.
"Tell me, my son, what is wrong?" she asked after they had been seated in her living room.
The concern in her voice surprised him almost as much as her reaction to his tears. He wasn’t close to the woman who gave him life. His parents separated when he was very young, and at his father’s insistence he had little contact with his mother since then. He disapproved of the woman in her entirety and kept his son away as much as he could manage.
"My life is a mess," he whispered.
"How?" she asked. She couldn't help him without the whole story.
*Causal Nexus* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
Sesshoumaru started at the beginning, explaining his long-term crush on the miko, their many near misses when one was dating someone and the other was available, and her teasing him until he finally broke. He skimmed over their actual time together and detailed what happened afterwards. He covered how her family had bound her powers, and why they believed they broke free, how they basically accused him of raping her. Then he went on to tell her about his father's advice, and how it wasn't working. He explained how he couldn't move on, how he still loved the miko with all of his heart, and how he wanted no other.
Misaki clicked her tongue in disgust at her mate's actions. He was allowing his own son to suffer, all to save face in the demon community, and she thought it was terrible. She had an idea of what was truly going on, but she had to be sure, and so she set out to ask her son an embarrassing question.
"While you were having sex," she spoke bluntly, seeing no point in dancing around her inquiry, "did she hurt you?"
Sesshoumaru stared at the wall, unable to look at his mother when speaking of something so intimate.
When he didn't answer right away, she sighed. "Sesshoumaru, my son, I believe I can help you, but I must know all the details. I would not ask if it were not important."
*Deal in Blood* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
The taiyoukai sighed and nodded. "She clawed at my back hard enough to draw blood."
"And you enjoyed it, did you not?"
"I did," he replied; hope growing in his heart at the possibility that he might have a chance to be with Kagome after all.
"And she was drawn to your blood?"
"She was." He was surprised his mother knew so much without him saying so. She had to know something important that could fix things!
"I knew something like this was going to happen eventually. You cannot trust your father when it comes to Kagome. Have you spoken with anyone else about her condition? It would not surprise me to learn that he lied to you, and she has woken already. From what you described, it should not have taken this long for her body to become accustomed to her powers."
"You think she's awake?"
"I do. I also suspect that she is very angry with you because she has not heard from you since the incident."
"You said you could help me? What do I need to do?"
Misaki shook her head and sighed. "My son, what will come will be very painful," she started. "A great deal of your blood will be shed. But you will enjoy every second of it."
