Chapter 5
Kagura awoke only able to breathe through one nostril, sniffing hard to try to clear the one that seemed blocked to no avail. Five times the sun had risen since Sesshoumaru returned, Kagura quickly losing count of the days now that he was near. She sat up with a groan at the unpleasantness settling throughout her nerves, a sharp pain going like a knife through her head, the heel of a hand pressing one eye as the ache within it burrowed from her temples down into her teeth. There would be no moving today, no matter how much Sesshoumaru had his mind set on it.
Speaking of, where was he?
"Sesshoumaru?" her voice cracked.
Rin sat nearby, warming at the fire, apparently far enough away for the wind user's voice to fail to reach her. Jaken stood by Ah-Un on the opposite edge of camp, checking the dragon's front left leg. He had been badly injured in his encounter with Naraku but seemed to be getting better, having had some rest.
"Where's Sesshoumaru?" She attempted again, Rin looking up, brows knit with concern.
"Something the matter, Lady Kagura?"
"It's nothing." She cleared her throat, hand flattening across her breast. "Just a little congestion. Is our lord out canvassing the perimeter?"
"Yes." The child nodded. "Said he wanted to be sure we wouldn't run into any surprises."
Kagura shook her head, her voice stuck in her throat a moment. "I'm afraid we won't be leaving today. There's just no way I can travel any significant distance this way."
"Lord Sesshoumaru will not take kindly to this," Jaken grumbled, coming nearer.
Crimson eyes fixed on him, narrowed fiercely. "Lord Sesshoumaru is more concerned with my well-being than moving camp, I assure you that."
"Hmph." The imp turned in a huff, beginning to walk away when he was squashed beneath a familiar black boot.
"Concerned with your well-being, why?" The youkai lord took his foot from his vassal, approaching the fire.
"Lady Kagura is not feeling well," Rin answered for her.
The former wind sorceress huddled near the fire, hugging herself against the morning chill. Sesshoumaru knelt beside her, his hand capturing her gaze on her shoulder. "I seem to have my first mortal illness," she told him, eyes lifting hesitantly to his. "It's nothing, I'm sure. Just don't feel much like travelling, that's all." She felt his hand tighten on her shoulder, before lifting with a pat.
"Rin." He turned to the little girl. "Have you prepared the morning meal yet?"
"No, my lord. I was just about to take Jaken fishing, was waiting until he was finished checking on Ah-Un. We still have some roots left over from the other day."
"Save them. I have an errand for you once you have finished eating."
"What is it?" the child beamed expectantly.
"You are take Ah-Un to the herb garden where you obtained the remedy for Jaken, when he fell ill from the saimyoushou's poison. Explain the lady's symptoms to its keepers and her condition. I am sure they are skilled enough to know what to do. As soon as you acquire the necessary materials, you will come straight back, you understand?"
"Yes, my lord." She nodded emphatically, her smile a slice of sun on this overcast day.
"Good. Now, go ahead. Catch your fish."
"Shall I go with her, Lord Sesshoumaru?" Jaken asked almost pleadingly. "To the herb garden?"
"No." He glared at the imp. "You will stay here in the event I need to leave camp for any reason."
"Yes, milord." His vassal bowed begrudgingly, following Rin into the forest.
Kagura smiled sheepishly as he returned his attention to her, what little sun showed through the clouds caught in little flashes across his pauldron. His skin so fair in the gray light, strands of his silver hair tossed behind him on the breeze, she was briefly dumbfounded by the sight—stricken, as if by lightning, by his beauty. "This is more trouble than it's worth." She absently scratched the increasingly itchy spot on her chest. "Just a bit of a cough, really."
"Not while you carry my child, it isn't." She was a little startled by the hand gently sliding across her stomach, this gesture of affection quite unexpected from the once cold youkai lord. "Anything you require, you only need ask."
She covered it with her own where it lay, nodding in reluctant agreement. "How about a kiss?" She smiled close. "I don't believe it's catching."
A tiny smirk of his own tugged at his tight lips as he pressed them to hers, the moment all too fleeting when he pulled away. "You must be thirsty." He reached beside him for the jug kept especially for boiling the river's impurities away, unstopping the top in order to offer her a drink of the fresh clean water within. She took it from him, struggling as she tipped it against her lips, a helpful hand falling beneath it to assist her with its weight. Refreshed, the wind user let out a sigh, the jug replaced by the fire, crimson eyes caught once again in Sesshoumaru's gaze. "Rest now." His thumb brushed her cheek, palm firmly cupping it, more in emphasis of his point than a gesture of affection this time. "We must leave and soon. I do not care for the atmosphere of this place."
"Still taste Naraku on the air, do you?"
He raised his eyes to the forest, finding himself staring in the direction from whence he came when Naraku invaded his camp, his hand dropped to his lap. "His filth, now much more bitter and foul, does tend to linger on the palate."
"I certainly hope it no longer taints me in such a way."
His eyes found hers again, brow furrowing above them. "Not for a very long time."

There was a bite in the air, the kind of wind that made him feel alive… apart from the being that used to personify it—the woman sleeping by the fire.
He silently cursed Naraku for binding her powers so, leaving her so vulnerable—feeling helpless without his protection. Little like the woman he knew before in many ways, mere fragments remaining of the fire and spunk she once embodied, so much robbed from her. Yet it was still there, somewhere beneath her mortal weaknesses; the tears and the turmoil.
It would be a while before Rin returned with the appropriate herbs from Jinenji's garden. No amount of staring at the moon would bring her back any faster. He turned and looked again at the former wind sorceress. How fragile she was in this state, and her being so heavy with child did not help matters. He let his eyes wander about the camp. Jaken slept propped up against a tree, snoring with his usual huge snot bubble growing and contracting with every whistling breath. Ah-Un had escorted Rin on her errand. Did it matter anyway? If anyone saw? He didn't suppose it did at this point.
He had made his affections for Kagura quite clear. After all, everyone in his little cadre knew she was carrying his child.
Sesshoumaru removed his armor and settled in close behind her, draping his arm around her crumpled figure. His hand came to rest on her swollen belly and she stirred briefly, coughing. The sound her lungs made sent a twinge of… well, he wasn't really sure what it was. He didn't recognize this feeling, but it put strange thoughts in his head when it hit, visions of their time together, curiosity as to which of their careless escapades resulted in the life growing within her.
Was this what worry felt like?
It was just a cough. A little congestion due to the change of the weather… of course, her fall into the cold water of the river didn't help matters there either. But knowing that did not quell the concern, didn't take away the… fear their time was short, that the last time they made love—atop the hill at the edge of camp, where he calmed her fears with his touch—might be their last. Surely he was overreacting… if that was even possible for him… right?
The black river of her ponytail flowed beside him, fanning out into dark, snakelike streams. Her beauty seemed to grow as his heir did, the child that now moved beneath his hand. How real it all suddenly became the moment this sensation sparked his nerves. The gentle pressure against his hand that filled him with such feelings no language could expound or reply, except for this. Lying beside her with this electricity, this motion beneath his fingers felt like… home. There was no other word to describe it. This unlikely family of imp vassal, little girl, youkai lord and mortal woman gave him a place to belong, a feeling of belonging he never knew he craved.
It all started with a simple truth. She wanted him, loved him and fought her understandable fear to say so. His world simplified and complicated all at the same time with one embrace, the little laugh against his chest; a daring kiss. Before he knew or could even think to stop it, he was on the ground, divested of his armor as he was now—his hard covering, the wall he'd built around himself broken down—her sitting astride his hips, pretty layers pooling in his lap. Her lips brushed his skin and his own facade soon fell away—all barriers between them broken now, left with nothing but their nakedness—like dying blossoms from an autumn-stricken flower.
Had he changed? Or, like the ever-shifting seasons, was it just time for his icy veneer to melt away and expose what was always within him? It was present in his father and brother, the capacity to love someone weaker, to want to protect them. He had found that with Rin and now, it seemed, Kagura.
His thoughts wound through memories, delight replacing doubt and fear. The way the sunlight played over her pale curves as he laid her back by the river, the sadness for his leaving in search of Naraku drifting from her eyes with every kiss he planted. The way her skin tasted always lingered on his tongue. Her scent had changed much from that of the man they both despised now that she possessed a human heart—an identity of her own, once she finally found it—even more so with her hormones in high gear. He breathed her in, arching his upper lip to allow her sweet perfume passage over his sensitive palate. Ah, to be intoxicated by a breath.
And now he was drifting. The comfort he never sought in this embrace too soon engulfed him, unwanted and yet so needed. Sleep pulled at him like little velvet fingers. Despite his place as watchman and protector, he would have to succumb; it was all just too… right.
Lazy red lids drooped, gold eyes searching the figure in front of them one last time before relinquishing their sight to relentless slumber. Rarely smiling lips curved and parted, breath lost between them. A promise made in the heat of passion echoed true in sharp ears.
I will protect you, he whispered. Both of you.

Kagura awoke with a hack, feeling on the verge of coughing up a lung as it seemed her affliction spread to them. The realization soon struck her, as her need to expel phlegm calmed, she was not alone, the owner of the arm wrapped around her—billowing white sleeve and claw-tipped hand unmistakable—stirring at the signs of her respiratory distress. "Sesshoumaru?" she choked, shaking her head as she finished clearing her throat. "I didn't ask—you didn't have to-"
"This night is cold." He squeezed her gently, head tipped against her shoulder, eyes lifting to hers from where his hand lay on her stomach. "I felt it," he said, uncharacteristically halting. "It moved. Did you…?"
She smiled tenderly, her hand sneaking over his. "I have. Though, I have to admit, I was asleep. But I've felt it before."
He nodded slowly, gaze drifting south, where she now laced her fingers with his… and he let her, welcomed it, in fact. "It must be strange to feel something moving inside you."
"It was, at first. But now it's like second nature." She drew a little gasp as the faint fluttering of movement within her flickered against their fingers, her eyes faraway a moment, before shifting back to Sesshoumaru, noticing a similar flicker of movement in his face. "I actually start to worry when I don't feel it for a while, like I do now."
He felt it too, among other things, it was clear, though nothing decipherable to her. Not as of yet.
"Funny," she laughed gently, material heard moving in her chest, "how it starts out as barely more than an idea. Until you feel…" She detangled her fingers from his, pressing his hand softly to her stomach. "This."
He met eyes with her, staring for a long time before letting his hand slide to her side. "Sleep. You are getting worse."
Kagura resisted the urge to roll her eyes, settling back in the fluff surrounding her with a scratch to the bothersome spot on her chest. "Do you think Rin is all right? She's been gone a long time."
"They probably kept her for the night. Even with Ah-Un, night travel is not safe for someone so young as she."
"How quickly I forget." She turned to cough into her sleeve, a bitter taste left on her tongue. "Even if there were cause for worry, you don't."
Sesshoumaru shifted where he sat, a chord somewhere within him apparently stricken.
It didn't matter; it wasn't as though she could tell what he was thinking anyhow, the youkai lord's inner workings still too heavily guarded. "Would you stay by me? Just a while longer?"
"Under one condition," he said firmly, draping her in the mokomoko as he eased down beside her.
"And that is?"
"Stop that incessant scratching. I smell blood."
Kagura smiled, dropping her hand to her side. "Yes, milord." She rolled over, tucking her hands beneath her head, too tired to acknowledge the dark stain on her sleeve. Sesshoumaru settled close behind her, his arm circling her, hand sneaking over her stomach beneath the fluff blanketing her.
