Chapter Nine.
Natsuko stood on her balcony in the early morning hours - it was four decades after her first battle that she went in with the others. Her handling of the pike had grown to the point where she could tell blindfolded what type of pike she held. Her temper was now under total control, it would take a lot for her to get angry enough to shift to her dog form and nearly slaughter everyone around her. She glanced at the guards who all smiled and waved at her before resuming their patrol of the walls. She was one female that didn�t dally with any of the men. They all began to give her the nickname of the Ice Princess, even though she had no royal title at all. She didn�t want to fall in love with anyone as it would just break her heart when they moved on. Sakuko-san did make mention that if a male did that, no woman would consider him as a male who sniffed around was unworthy of having a bitch as a mate.
She headed back into her room when she noticed that the door was opened and Lady Kannon was standing at the door very heavy with pup. �Lady Kannon, what can I do for you?�
She smiled, as she placed her hands on her belly. �I wanted to see how you were doing. We haven�t been able to sit down and talk anymore.�
�We�ve both been busy,� Natsuko stated. �You with Inu no Taisho and starting your own family, me with training to be the best soldier he has in his ranks.�
Kannon smiled as she stepped into Natsuko�s room to accept the chair that she held for her. �I�ve been keeping tabs on you, Natsuko over the years that you have been here. I need someone like you.�
�Need someone like me?� asked Natsuko. �What do you mean?�
�I would like you to become my bodyguard,� Lady Kannon asked, as she stood up from the chair. �I will give you a day to think it over.�
Natsuko watched her walk away from her. She knew she had a big problem on her hands as an offer from the Lady of the castle was not an offer you wanted to reject without thinking it through. She decided to go visit her squad captain Sakuko for advice on what she should do as she was not really sure what her options would be.

Natsuko watched as the new recruits went through their training session as she waited for them to have a break so she could speak with Sakuko. She knew her squad captain knew she was there as she glanced over in her direction. It was not too long before Sakuko ordered them to continue on with their training as she walked over to Natsuko.
Sakuko smiled as she looked at her. �What brings you out to the training center, Natsuko?�
�I require advice as I have been offered a position and I am unsure what my options would be. I figured talking to you might be the best bet,� Natsuko stated, as she looked at her.
�So tell me this position you have been offered?� Sakuko asked, as she picked up the water jug and started to sip from it.
�Bodyguard duty for the Lady Kannon,�
Sakuko lowered the jug down and looked at her. �She offered you that position?�
�Yes,�
�What did you say?�
�Nothing right now, I have a grace of a day before I give her my response.�
�What are you going to do, Natsuko?� Sakuko asked.
�I�m not sure, that is why I�m here to ask you for your advice,� Natsuko scratched the back of her head.
�You do understand what a bodyguard does, right?� Sakuko looked at her to see her shake her head. �Very well, a bodyguard protects someone like our Lord and Lady. You do see those people that walk with them both, right?�
Natsuko recalled seeing people walk with them. �I always see them walking with others, I thought they were the council members continuing their conversations from the council chambers.�
Sakuko shook her head. �No, they were their bodyguards.�
�But why would the Lady Kannon want me to be her bodyguard?� Natsuko didn�t understand why she would want her. �Surely, there are other soldiers who are more worthy than I.�
�Maybe because she trusts you more than the other soldiers,� Sakuko said, before she turned her attention back over to the recruits. She stood up. �I should return to my recruits, Natsuko. Do think it over before you make up your mind. She doesn�t put her trust in anyone that she doesn�t like.�
Natsuko sat there watching for the rest of the day as the sun started to set for the night, the light of the torch she held in her hand guided her back to the castle. She went to the kitchen to get some food to eat and headed back to her chambers. She sat in her chair looking over the inner courtyard, she wondered if it was easy or hard for a Yokai to be killed as that was one thing that she feared � dying.
One of the guards noticed that she was sitting there, he leapt over which was easy for him to do as he looked at her. �What got you so worried?�
�An offer to be a bodyguard,� Natsuko replied.
�And why is that such a worry?� he asked.
�It isn�t. How easy or is it hard to kill one of us?� She asked, as she glanced over at him.
�Not very easy, Natsuko, as we�re hard to kill.� He looked over at her. �Why do you want to know?�
�I was curious.� Natsuko replied. �But thank you, you have made my decision a lot easier to do now.�
He smiled and leapt back to the wall where the others chastised him for talking with the fabled Ice Princess.
Natsuko walked into her chambers. �I will tell her in the morning.� She whispered to herself, as she quickly got ready for bed.
