Okay, so now we’re
getting somewhere. Rin and Sesshomaru have been reunited, and it’s obvious that
they are attracted to each other. So, let’s see what happens…
The Resurrection and
the Denial
She looked toward
Sesshomaru, and was surprised to see him staring right back at her, as though
he were deep in concentration.
Uncertain of what the
look meant, she began to walk towards him. When he noticed this, he began to
walk towards her as well. As they got closer to each other, Rin opened her
mouth to speak, but to her surprise, Sesshomaru walked right past her without
saying a word. She turned to follow him, hoping that he would tell her what was
wrong, but he was silent as he made his
way back to the small hut that served as his refuge.
When they reached the
door of his hut, she finally got the nerve to speak. “I guess since you’re
awake, you’re going to leave, right?”
Sesshomaru was quiet
for a moment. “I can’t leave right away. My energy has yet to return to me, and
if I were to go out right now, I would undoubtedly be forced into another
battle, and in my current state, there is no guarantee that I would be able to
leave it unscathed.”
“Oh, okay.” Rin was
quiet for a moment. “So, does that mean that you’re going to stay for a few
more days?”
Sesshomaru looked at
her nonchalantly. “Why, would it make you happy if I were to stay?”
Rin looked away. “I’m
just worried about your health, that’s all. I have spent the last few days
treating you.” She set the bundle of herbs that she had been carrying down by the
door, then walked over to him, laying her hand lightly on his shoulder. She
began to press softly against his wounds, noticing the soft twitch that
happened when she did so.
“What are you doing?”
Sesshomaru asked, frowning.
“I’m checking to see
if your wounds still hurt. And sure enough, they do.” She stepped back,
crossing her arms in front of her chest and placing a hand under her chin.
“You’re still injured, so it’s probably a good idea for you to stay here for a
little while.” When his head whirled around and he looked at her with a puzzled
look on his face, she quickly added, “Or that’s just my opinion. You’ll do what
you think is best, my lord.”
Sesshomaru nodded.
“Of course.” He paused for a moment. “But I agree. You have been doing a good
job so far of tending to my wounds, and I see no reason to stop you from
continuing.” He turned to face her. “So it is decided. I will stay here until
my wounds have completely healed and my energy has fully returned.” He could
see the faint trace of a smile that she was trying to conceal. “I’m glad to
know that makes you happy.”
“Oh!” She blushed and
turned away. “My apologies, Lord Sesshomaru. I didn’t mean to offend you.” She
could feel that familiar feeling in the area below her stomach again. She
clutched her skirt and pulled her knees closer together, doing her best to
ignore it.
He watched her as she
tried to hide her arousal yet again. He was intrigued, curious about what it
was that had the girl so turned on.
“Rin?”
She looked at him.
“Yes, m’lord?”
“Do you plan on
staying here tonight?”
“I thought that would
best. That way I could still tend to you and Master Jaken and Ah-Un.”
Sesshomaru paused,
deep in thought. “I don’t believe that decision would be in our best interests.
You should probably return to the village, spend the night there.”
“But your wounds-“
“I won’t leave during
the night if that is what you’re concerned about. I told you, my strength has
not returned and to leave now would be foolish.”
“O-okay.” She was
still uncertain, but she didn’t dare question Sesshomaru any further. She
turned away from him and began to exit the hut, pausing just for a moment to
looking at Jaken, who was asleep in the corner, the events of the day having
worn him down in his injured state. “I’ll come back in the morning to check on
Master Jaken and Ah-Un.”
“Very well.”
Sesshomaru turned away from her and began to meditate, quietly focusing on
concentrating and controlling his demonic aura.
Rin took this as her
final cue to leave, and turned away, walking slowly toward the village. As she
got closer, she could see some of the villagers gathered together at the end of
the path. They all turned to face her when they saw her approaching.
“Is something wrong?”
Rin asked as she got closer to the group.
One of the women that
she had seen earlier that day approached her quietly. “So, how is that demon
that you’ve been taking care of?”
Rin straightened up.
“He’s doing well. His wounds have healed up nicely and he’s awakened after
being unconscious for the past five days.”
“So he’ll be leaving
the village soon?” A man’s voice cried out.
“In a few days.”
Rin’s stood up straight, fists clenched tight in front of her chest. “His
strength hasn’t fully returned, so-“
“What do we care if
his strength hasn’t returned yet? We want him gone!” Another man’s voice cried
out.
The woman in front of
her spoke up. “We would feel much more comfortable if you were to ask him to
leave.”
“And why would I do
that?”
The woman looked at
Rin with a puzzled look on her face. “Rin, he is a demon. He will do nothing
but being trouble to our village, and with Lady Kagome’s pregnancy, we are
worried that we will be left defenseless, that we will not be able to defend
ourselves should a demon decide to attack.”
“No demon would be
stupid enough to attack our village as long he is here.” Inuyasha’s voice rang
out from behind the mob.
The villagers all
turned around to face the half-demon, who was making his way towards the group,
with Kagome and Kaede following him closely. When they were standing between
Rin and the villagers, Inuyasha turned to face them. “The demon that Rin is
nursing is an inu daiyoukai. He is the Lord of the West, meaning that all of
the lands in the West have been claimed as his territory. That means that
unless they are willing to try and challenge him for that title, no demon in
their right mind would pick a fight with him.”
The young woman
turned her gaze toward Inuyasha. “And how do you know all of this?”
Inuyasha was quiet.
There was a moment of silence, and then Kaede’s voice spoke up. “My daddy knows
because that demon is his brother.”
There was a
collective gasp among the villagers. Inuyasha whirled around on his daughter.
“Kaede!”
Kaede cowered behind
her mother. “I thought you were going to say it first.”
“Is that true?” The
young woman stepped forward. “Is that demon your brother?”
“Half-brother.”
Inuyasha looked at his daughter disappointedly. He continued to look at her as
he said, “He is my half-brother.”
“So that’s why you
let Rin treat his wounds?” said the young woman.
“No, actually, I
didn’t want Rin treating him for the same reasons as you.” Inuyasha gestured
toward his wife. “She convinced me to allow Rin to treat his wounds.”
“But what is this
demon to you?” One of the men turned to Rin, waiting expectantly on an answer
to his question.
Rin bowed her head.
“He-“
“Is nothing to her.”
Inuyasha and the
others turned around as Sesshomaru’s voice spoke up from behind them. The young
woman stepped forward. “Who are you?”
Sesshomaru looked at
her, his face expressionless. “I am the demon that you’re standing here
gossiping about. My name is Sesshomaru.”
The villagers all gasped. Most of the
villagers were still quite young, and for many of them, Inuyasha was the
closest thing that they had seen to a demon in human form.
“You are a demon?”
The young woman looked skeptical.
“I can assure you,
everything that Inuyasha has told you about me is true. I am a daiyoukai, and
the Lord of the Western Lands.” Sesshomaru paused for a moment. “And yes, I am
Inuyasha’s half-brother.” He turned toward Rin. “But this girl has no
connection to me. She is merely a girl that had taken pity on me and wanted to
help me.”
One of the men
stepped forward. “That’s not what Gin says. He says that Rin stared Inuyasha
down and refused to listen to reason. That she said that she would treat his
wounds even if Inuyasha did not approve. It was then that Lady Kagome stepped
in and overruled Inuyasha and gave her permission to treat your wounds.”
Sesshomaru turned
toward Rin. “Is that true?”
Rin turned away.
“So it is true?” The
young woman turned towards Rin. “You were willing to risk the lives of the
people in our village out of some misguided sense of loyalty to this demon?”
Her voice was pitched high with anger.
Sesshomaru watched
Rin as she raised her head, and he couldn’t help but notice the fierce look in
her eyes. He had never seen a look like that from her before, but he had seen
it many times in Jaken’s eyes when he was proclaiming his loyalty to
Sesshomaru. The girl’s voice quavered as she spoke.
“Make no mistake, if
I did anything for Lord Sesshomaru, it was not out of a misguided sense of
loyalty. I did it because this demon has done more for me than any human has or
ever will.”
Sesshomaru was quiet
as she lowered her head, having spoken all she had to say in that one
statement. The villagers were quiet for a moment; as though they were letting
her words sink in. Then one spoke up, “We don’t care what your reasons were. We
want him gone from our village and we want him gone now.”
Sesshomaru lowered
his head. “Very well, then. I will leave in the morning.”
Rin’s head whirled
around. “What? No, you shouldn’t have to-“
Kagome grabbed Rin’s
arm. Rin turned to look at her, and the priestess shook her head.
“But Kagome, you
said-“
“I said you could
treat his wounds, that you could nurse him until he was healed. His wounds are
healed, Rin.”
“But he’s not at his
full strength!” She turned to face Sesshomaru. “Lord Sesshomaru, tell them.
Tell them how you’re not at full strength, that you may become wounded even
worse than before.”
“Rin, stop.”
“But Lord
Sesshomaru-“
“Rin, if you really
value my word, you will be silent from this moment on.”
Rin’s mouth
immediately snapped shut.
“Let me make
something clear. This girl made her own decision. I would’ve been content to
let my wounds heal in the woods. But this girl chose to help me and nurse me
back to health. I am very grateful for all that she has done these past few
days, and I want you all to understand that.
“But I will not stand
here and listen to you ridicule her. While I am sure that her decision to help
me was an unusual one, I am sure that she would not hesitate to do the same for
any of you. I refuse to continue to stand here quietly, however, while you try
to condemn this girl for trying to help someone who has saved her life on
numerous occasions.”
The villagers were
quiet. One elderly woman stepped forward. “I recognize you. I remember seeing
you leave Lady Kaede’s hut many years ago.”
Sesshomaru said
nothing.
“I want you to tell me
something.”
Sesshomaru said
nothing.
“This girl fought
tooth and nail so that she could nurse you back to health. She was ready to
sacrifice everything and anyone so that you would live. The question I have for
you is simple.” The old woman began to walk, albeit slowly, towards the
inuyoukai.
Still, Sesshomaru
said nothing.
The old woman stopped
in front of him and lifted her head slowly. She looked him straight in the eye.
Her voice was so quiet that everyone had to strain to hear it.
“Would you do the
same for her? Would you readily sacrifice everyone and everything that was
important to you for her? Hmmm? Would you?”
Sesshomaru’s voice
was just as quiet as the old woman’s.
“I would never let
things get that far. I would never let anyone in my charge put me in that kind
of situation.”
The old woman watched
his eyes closely. “Your eyes betray you. They say not only have you done just
that, but that you were ready to give your life to ensure her safety.”
When she heard this,
Rin’s head whirled to face Sesshomaru. He looked at her, hoping that his eyes
did not betray him to her as easily as they did to the old woman. He could not
be sure, but it seemed that his secret was safe. His memories of the things
that happened in his mother’s home were still his to keep.
He turned to face the
old woman again. “I told you, I would never let things get that far.”
The old woman was
silent for a moment. Then, she turned around and walked away, saying, “What
happens with this demon and this girl is none of our concern. We should leave
them be.”
There was a cry of
protest from some of the men. “But, old woman-“
“No buts.” The old
woman’s voice was firm as she spoke. “Lady Kagome has placed her trust in Rin
and her abilities. I suggest you all do the same.”
“But what if a demon
attacks the village? What then?” said the young woman.
“Don’t be silly.” The
old woman turned to face Sesshomaru as she finished her thought.
“As long as that girl
is here, he will stay. And as long as he is here, no harm will befall our
village.”

Inuyasha watched the
villagers as they returned to their respective homes, their blood thirst
quenched by the old woman’s words that Sesshomaru would not only cause no harm
to their village, but that as long as Rin was there, no other demon would,
either.
Rin stood next to
Kagome, her mouth open slightly. She was looking at Sesshomaru, resisting the
urge to cry. As she stood there, she could feel that feeling in her groin
again, this time stronger than ever. Once again, she pulled her knees together
and clutched at her skirt.
“Rin? Are you okay?”
Kagome face had donned a worried look.
Inuyasha turned to
look at them and noticed the way Rin was standing. He could also smell the same
scent he’d smelled earlier, when he’d come upon Rin and Sesshomaru on the path.
It was the unmistakable scent of arousal, and she was doing her best to suppress
it. Good luck with that.

Sesshomaru was quiet.
His thoughts were focused on his memory of the events that took place when he
took Rin to his mother’s home, the day he’d found out that Tenseiga
could only revive a soul once. He remembered the feeling of regret, deep regret
that he felt when his mother told him that he could not bring Rin back and
chastised him for believing that he was above the rules of life and death.
He remembered the
feeling of deep sadness he’d felt when he realized that not only was Rin gone
for good, but that it was his fault. If he had never brought her to his mother’s,
she would’ve never…
Then, his mother took
the stone from her neck, making some snide comment about how he was his father’s
son. He remembered the feeling of hope that rose in him as she approached Rin’s
body, and placed her stone upon it, releasing the light that was Rin’s soul and
placing it back into her body. He remembered the feeling after that, the
feeling of pure joy and happiness, as he placed his hand on her face and caressed
her cheek.
He would never forget
that moment, because it was one of the few moments in his life where he had let
his guard down and let his emotions come to the surface. It was also the moment
that he was forced to acknowledge that Rin meant more to him than he wanted to
admit.
She had become like a
daughter to him. Her well-being had become a part of his every thought, and every
decision that he had made from that point on was made with her best interests
in mind. That’s why he’d asked Inuyasha to ask the old priestess to take care
of her. That’s why he’d left her in the village to begin with. He knew that the
longer she traveled with him, the more danger she would be in, and the more of
the world’s horrors she would be exposed to.
And he did not want
that for her. Not at all.

Rin was quiet,
letting her thoughts float through her mind. Her memories of the time she’d spent
traveling with Sesshomaru raced through her mind, and there was one thought in
particular that she couldn’t help but to remember.
It was her memory of
the time that Sesshomaru took her to a strange platform in the sky, a place
where she met someone that she’d never, ever thought she would meet: Lord
Sesshomaru’s mother. She was as beautiful as Sesshomaru was handsome, and
carried herself with the same regal air that Sesshomaru did. Rin felt a feeling
of admiration for her, the same that she felt for Sesshomaru.
But Rin never got the
chance to really get to know Lord Sesshomaru’s mother, because when she took
the stone from her neck and opened a Meidou, a giant
dog jumped out and devoured her and Kohaku. It was
then that everything went black, and Rin’s memory went blank. When she came to,
she was lying on a bench, her heartbeat pulsing in her ears like the sound of a
thousand drums. Her eyes opened slowly, and the first thing she remembered
seeing was Lord Sesshomaru leaning over her, with a look of extreme sadness in
his eyes. His hand slowly made its way to her cheek, caressing it softly. She
wanted to ask him what was wrong, but the look in his eyes unnerved her so much
that she was left speechless. She had never seen a look like that in his eyes
and she knew that she never wanted to see it again.
The memory of that
look in his eyes…she had suppressed it for all of those years, because it was
not a look that she wanted to remember, at least not from her Lord Sesshomaru.
The reason it was coming back after all of those years was because she had just
seen that look in his eyes again, when he’d looked at her after the old woman
had asked him if he would give his life for her.
She had always knew
that Lord Sesshomaru cared for her, but seeing that look in his eyes opened her
up to the possibility that maybe, just maybe, the feelings that she was feeling
for him may just be returned. It was a
long shot, but just maybe…
Rin laughed quietly, clutching
her skirt even tighter.
I need to quit kidding myself. There’s no way in hell that would ever
happen.
