AN I went crazy yesterday and busted out four chapters. I was going to post them over the next couple of days, but I couldn’t wait.
If you jumped to the latest chapter, you might have skipped one, or three. : ) Just in case this doesn’t seem where you left off.
THANKS FOR THE REVIEWS!!!!! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!!!
“I am aware of your name, Miko.” He faces and says with complete seriousness, “Whether or not you can be of any use also depends on you and your resolve to see him dead. If I didn’t believe you could be helpful, I wouldn’t have brought you here.”
The day goes on pretty uneventful. Sesshomaru takes off once again, doing god only knows what. I spend the day with Rin, tiding up the hut and preparing the rabbits she caught for diner.
We’ve skin the rabbits and shoved spits through their small bodies, slowly letting them roast on the open flame. Turning them whenever the flesh browns and juices drip, sizzling on the coals below. My stomach growls at the aroma of succulent meat. This will be my first real meal since I came back, I’m so hungry.
Rin and I sit around the fire, watching the sky turn a blazing red, matching the brilliant colors of the dancing flames. The cool air carries with it no hint of danger, just the crisp scent of a nearby stream.
It’s peaceful here. Whoever built this home must have enjoyed a quiet life. I wonder what happened to them, or why Sesshomaru and Rin would use such a small place to stay in. At first I thought this was only a stop for me to recover at, but the more I look around I can tell they having staying here for at least a few weeks. I would have expected Sesshomaru to stay in nothing less then a large castle, this place seems beneath him.
“Rin?” She turns her attention from dinner to me.
“Huh?”
“Doesn’t Sesshomaru have a kingdom or something? Why are you guys staying here?” She smiles bashfully, brushing her long brown hair from her face.
“Well, he used to. Ten years ago, Zenaku charged My Lord’s home while he was away. No one had ever dared attack his home directly before… We thought it was safe. That was when Master Jaken was taken. He never rebuilt it.” She wipes away a single tear running down her cheek. “Sorry, I haven’t spoken of this for so long, but it still hurts. Jaken was family too me.”
“No, I’m sorry. I will try not to ask so…” Sesshomaru lands gracefully across the fire, turning his attention to Rin, then shots me a death glare.
That look is as scary as I remember, and I draw my attention to the extremely interesting dirt under my feet.
“Rin?” He lays a long slender bundle wrapped in tan hides on the ground next to Rin’s feet.
“Lord Sesshomaru.” She stands to meet him, handing him a cup of tea. “Are you hungry today? We have plenty.”
“No.” He takes a sip and hands back the cup. “I will return.”
He walks over to An-Un, grazing in the side yard. He calls for the beast to follow and they both take flight, heading into the thick.
“Where’s he going now?” I ask.
“To watch over Ah-Un as he hunts. Dragons need more then grass, and it’s not safe for him alone.” She pulls a spit from the ground and slides the meat onto a plate, handing to it me without any utensils.
I don’t mind much and dig in like it’s chicken. The juicy meat falls from the bone in my mouth. So good. I can’t remember eating meat this tender before. It taste so amazing that I don’t even care it was a cute little bunny.
“Oh my gosh, Rin. This is great. Thank you so much.” She blushes a little at the complaint and retorts with modesty.
“Don’t thank me, you did most of it. I just instructed.”
“Are you kidding? I would’ve just thrown it on the fire till it got crispy. You did this, not me. Thank you.” She smile and we finish in silence, staring at the lone rabbit keeping warm next to the fire.
“Doesn’t he eat?”
“Sometimes. He doesn’t need to often. I will save it for him. If he doesn’t want it, Ah-Un will get it, after he’s had his fill of hunting. He gets antsy if he’s always being provided for.” She pulls the last rabbit from it’s stick lays it on a plate next to the fire, then turns her attention to the package Sesshomaru dropped off.
“I hope this will do.” She hands it to me.
I untie the stings holding the hides together, exposing a long, beautifully decorated, light wood bow and a quiver of arrows. Much nicer then anything I used in my world or this. This was a bow made by a skill craftsman, not like the basic ones we used to pick up wherever we could find one. Not that it would have done any good to buy such a fine bow back then, I was constantly loosing or breaking them. I will make sure to take better care of this one.
“It’s beautiful. Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me. I didn’t get it for you.”
I run my fingers over the little sakura flowers craved into the front, thinking of Inuyasha, when I notice the sad smile cross Rin’s face.
“What’s wrong, Rin?”
“Hn, nothing really.” She grabs the plates and washes them in a bucket of water, then lays them upside down to dry.
“You should go to sleep. Tomorrow Lord Sesshomaru intends to evaluate your skills. You need to be rested.”
“Yeah, okay.” If she doesn’t want to talk about it, I’m not going to make her. I’ve made her sad enough for one day. “Good night.”
“Good night, Kogame.”
I grab the bow and arrows, carefully making it to the hay bed. I stand the bow next to my bed and lay down, avoiding any pressure and my still healing ribs. They’re the cause of most of remaining pain. That and the cut across my cheek bone. I think that’s never going to heal.
A dreamless sleep comes quickly, giving me a much needed peaceful rest.
**************************
The voices outside, coupled with the light rays pouring through the window, tell me I’ve over slept. Not the impression I wanted to make. I don’t want to feel like the weakest link here, even if it’s obvious I am.
I scramble out of bed, noting how much better my chest feels. My ribs are almost all healed. I pull on my socks and sandals, throw the quiver over my head and shoulder, grab the bow, and head out the door. Today’s the day I am going to prove the I have the skills to be useful.
The voices stop as soon as I reach the door, they already know I’m up. Pushing against the flimsy wood plank, I venture outside. The air is still cool and crisp, fresh as the new day. Can’t be past seven, luckily I haven’t spelt in too long.
Sesshomaru and Rin are sitting around the fire pit, glasses in hand. I join them and Rin pours me a cup of tea, handing to over with a piece of bread.
“Eat. You will be leaving soon with My Lord.” Not a very exciting breakfast, but I eat it gratefully.
After I finish, Rin stands, offering me a hand up. She leads me to Ah-Un while Sesshomaru still sits at the fire’s side.
“Listen Kagome, you are going with Lord Sesshomaru. He wishes to test your skills. Please keep your mouth shut and do as you’re told.” Her brow dips worriedly. Fair enough. I do, sometimes, have a small problem with running my mouth. And maybe being just a little pig headed and uncooperative. But not this time. I can see the bigger picture here. There is no time to fool around.
“While you are out, I will head into town. I need gather some information. I won’t be back until dark. Keep out of trouble okay?”
“Okay. I promise.” She smiles warily, jumps onto Ah-Un’s back and gives me a nervous wave good-bye.
Wow, she really thinks I might says something to get myself killed.
I turn back to Sesshomaru, now standing, watching me. Looking almost angry, or it that just his normal face?
Hmmm, I hope she’s not right.
