Kagome had regained her strength quickly, though she wasn’t nowhere near 100% yet, she at least was able to move around freely without Kouga’s constant assistance. Kouga had become restless just sitting inside his den with her all day. He was used to coming and going as he pleased and the lack of freedom was making him fidgety. To be honest he had just gotten on her nerves. He was sweet and attentive, but a cooped up ookami Prince was exhausting. She had coaxed him into taking up a few of the daily patrols for Saburo and then that turned into him taking his position back completely. She still had to be under supervision at all times, just in case. She didn’t mind really. Ginta, Hakkaku, and Saburo kept her company sometimes and she enjoyed spending the time with her pack brothers. Most of her days were spend with a female ookami named Natsuki. She was a dark eyed wolf, taller than Kagome and had snowy white hair that hung loosely between her shoulder blades. Her furs were the same russet as all the pack colors and her tail held a nice salt and pepper contrast to them. Her furs bared her midriff and one shoulder, complimenting her athletic figure nicely. She didn’t wear fur on her shins like some of the others, just the normal bandages. Kagome had found out through Hakkaku that she was Ginta’s intended. She had to admit, he’d chosen well.
She had a bubbly personality and was easy to get along with. She and Kagome had become friends almost immediately. She had been the one to fit Kagome with her new furs. They had to make a few adjustments because of Kagome’s mortality and inability to withstand the low temperatures. They had settled on a simple fur wrap to go around her waist that wasn’t too much longer than her old school uniform skirt and a top fur that wrapped around her torso, hiding any vulnerable skin. Her shoulders and arms remained bare, except for the elbow length fur bracers she wore. They had used the regular bandages for her feet, but her leg furs went up to her thighs, stopping a few inches from the bottom of her lower fur wrap. They had made a fur cape, complete with a hood, which she could secure around her neck to keep her hands free. It added additional protection against the harsh winter weather. All in all she had to say that the pack furs were very comfortable and warm. Today she was spending her time under Saburo’s watchful eye. Kouga had been summoned by the Elders again and Natsuki was busy cleaning her fur clothing. “Looks like you polished off that pot.” Saburo said while inspecting the clean cooking pot on the shelf. “I guess it did. It was delicious by the way. Thank you.” “You are most welcome, but I’m going to have to ask you to keep it a secret. Very few know of my affinity for cooking and I would hate to think what the pack would say about their Beta doing something so womanly.” He said with a grin and a wink. She laughed softly. “Don’t worry your secrets safe with me. So, umm…I don’t mean to pry, but how is it Ayame is in the same pack as Kouga. I thought that most of his pack was…well with the Birds of Paradise and then Naraku…” “Much has changed in the years since you last saw him. You know that Ayame was a member of one of the Northern tribes. Her grandfather was the chief, but has moved up in rank to Elder. Kouga petitioned the Elder Counsel to gather the many wolf tribes together, to unite us as one force. I was Alpha of my own Northern Pack, but what he did made sense. We needed to reconnect, like the days of old. We’re stronger that way.” “Oh, so how was it you became Beta, weren’t there a lot of other Alphas.” “Well, that is simple. The Elder’s held a contest to see who would rule this newly united pack. In the end only Kouga and I were standing. We fought a long while, but in the end he ruled victorious and claimed his rightful place. We struck up a friendship and realized we shared a lot of the same goals. He asked me to be Beta not long after and since I had proven my strength to the rest of the pack, no one contested his decision. So here I am.” “Is Ayame going to be okay?” She blurted out suddenly. It had been nagging her for a while. “Kouga was right you are completely selfless. She tried to kill you and you are concerned about her well-being? Astounding.” He said with a smirk and a shake of his head. “Well, yes. It was all a misunderstanding on her part. Kouga told me that Ayame still desires to be his mate and she thought I was doing the same. Of course I was out cold for three months, but Ayame was never one to hold her composure for very long and if there’s one thing she’s passionate about, it’s Kouga. She was hurt emotionally by what happened and I don’t want her to think I hold any ill will towards her.” “In that case, she’s as well as to be expected. You have to understand that under ookami law, one who unjustly attacks their Alpha is to be brought before the Elder Counsel for judgment. Her situation is severe by most standards. She disobeyed a direct order from me, attacked you, attacked Kouga, and then proceeded to attack me in front of the Elders while I gave them a report on her actions.” “Oh my. So what’s going to happen to her? You said her grandfather’s an Elder, so he’s got to be on her side, right?” “Unfortunately, no. Once he accepted the position of Elder, his main priority became the protection of the longtime honored traditions and laws of our ancestors. He is honor bound; regardless of the love he may share for his blood, to uphold those laws. It is difficult to say what will happen to her. She may be exiled or put to death. It depends on what the Elders’ decision is once we bring forth the evidence at the meeting in a few days.” “I see. It must be difficult for them, Ayame and her grandfather I mean, to have to be so divided.” “I suppose you are right. He raised her after her parents were killed, but she knew the consequences of her actions and she knew that her grandfather would act honorably. Tell me, Kagome, what do you think of Kouga?” He asked suddenly. She just looked at him a moment, blinking, clearly taken aback and trying to form an intelligible opinion. “Well, he’s strong, loyal, and my friend.” “Just a friend? I was under the impression that you two were more than that. Especially after what I saw and heard this morning.” He said with a lecherous grin.Flashback to the events of that morning. Saburo came to a stop outside Kouga’s den, listening intently. They were sleeping soundly. He went through the flap to wake Kouga. The fur blankets were pooled around their hips. Kagome was lying on her stomach with Kouga’s arm draped across her and he couldn’t help but notice her bare back. Her fur top had apparently slid down sometime in the night. He took a tentative sniff of the air. They weren’t mated yet; Kagome’s pure scent hadn’t changed. Oh, this was going to be good. “Ahhem.” Kouga sat straight up at the sound of him clearing his throat, hair messed and hanging in his face. He was clearly disoriented and was having a hard time waking completely. That is until Kagome stirred and rolled onto her back revealing a rather perfect set of breasts. Kouga dove on top of her to cover her nudity, giving Saburo an unwanted view of his tail and fur clad ass. “What the hell, Saburo!” Kouga bellowed. “Forgive me, Kouga. How was I supposed to know that you would give into your basic instincts so soon?” He replied with a chuckle. “Nothing happened, besides you know better than to come barging in here. You could have at least given me a damn warning so I could make sure she was decent.” Saburo’s chuckles turned into full blown laughter. “What and miss the alluring display of said lady fair? No, I believe it’s better this way. You, on the other hand, are blocking my view.” “Get the fuck out, Saburo!” Kouga growled. Saburo raised his hands in defeat and reigned in his laughter to a smirk. “The Elders wish to speak with you, again. Don’t worry about lady fair. I will stay to…entertain her in your absence.” “Out!” Saburo laughed again and exited the den. “K-Kouga? W-what’s going on?” Kagome’s sleepy voice flowed from under him. He rose to his knees beside her and watched her stretch and yawn. Her hair was tussled and her skin was covered in a warm blush. She was stunning. The more he got of her the more he wanted. He wanted to cover her small body with his and taste every inch of her skin, but the Elders needed him and he had to leave her. She apparently had no idea that Saburo had gotten an eye full, so he decided it was best not to tell her. “The Elders have summoned me, Kagome. Saburo is going to stay with you until I get back.” He said softly. She looked up at him, then down at her bare chest and back to him. She ‘eeped’ and swatted his chest, a furious blush creeping to the surface of her pale cheeks. He pulled her fur wrap up to hide her nudity. Oh, he really didn’t want to leave. “Did you sleep well?” He asked as he pulled away from her and stood. “I did. I would say better than I have in a long time, but I’ve been in a coma for three months. How about you?” He sat next to her, with his ankle wraps and bandages in hand. “I can honestly say that I slept better than I have in six years, my love.” He said smiling at her. She smiled back, not registering what he had just said and attempted to sit up, but failed and flopped back down into the comfort of the furs. Kouga finished his last tie on his leg and reached over to push her hair behind her ear. “You might want to get dressed for the day before he comes in here.” He said playfully. “You do not need to trouble yourself, sister. It will not offend me.” The raised voice of Saburo said from outside the den. “Oh, Kami.” Kagome exclaimed softly, a hot blush rose across her nose. “Don’t mind him, Kagome. He doesn’t mean you any harm. He just likes to joke. Now, come on let’s find you something to wear.” He rose offering his hand to her, which she took gratefully. He led her over to his chest and crouched, opening it. He rummaged around until he found a couple of his fur wraps and a few ties. They were too big for her, but it was the best that he could do until Natsuki brought her other furs back after their cleaning.
She blushed. I guess it was too much to hope for, but the question had been raised and she was not one to lie. She summoned her will to keep her voice from wavering when she spoke. “Kouga called me his love.” “That he did and that he does, little one, very much, but that goes without saying. He’s very public with his claim of you.” “That’s not surprising. He was always that way, except the part where he took back his claim and I didn’t see him for six years.” She said remorsefully, remembering their last embrace so long ago. “Do not let that fool you. He has refused to take a mate in all the years you two have been apart. He never so much as gave Ayame a second glance and trust me when I say she was tenacious. He missed you terribly and talked about you sometimes. A testament to his devotion to you lies in what has occurred recently. Never once did he leave your side. He refused all who would try to assist him in taking care of you, claiming it was his duty as your mate. He spent many weeks without food or sleep keeping a constant vigil over you. I have never seen him in such a state, but you are awake now and such things have passed. Now, I ask you again, what are your feelings for Kouga?” He said seriously. Kagome didn’t know what to say. She had known that Kouga had taken care of her, but it was hard for her to imagine him as anything but his usual lighthearted, cocky self. She felt terrible that she had put him through that kind of pain. She didn’t fully understand what she felt for Kouga. She had promised to stay the winter with him and he promised to take her home, but there was a tugging at her heart at the thought. Then when she awoke to him on top of her, she hadn’t been apprehensive; just embarrassed. Actually, she found herself missing him a great deal, but what did she feel for him? There was something there, something new, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on. “I agreed to stay the winter here with him, but he said he would bring me home after the first thaw. I have responsibilities to take care of. But as far as me and Kouga, I really don’t know what to say.” Saburo expected as much. This little woman had no idea what kind of power she held over Kouga and it wasn’t his place to tell her. She was smart she’d figure it out. He could see the storm of emotions flicker through her eyes and he knew she felt something for his friend. She didn’t strike him as the type that would just allow anyone to sleep holding her at night. She was also too proud to allow herself to be pampered in the way Kouga did, but somehow he managed it with little to no resistance from her. She was far too innocent for deception or manipulation of any kind and he had yet to sense it on her. Then he had seen them react to one another this morning during her moment of indecency. She was very responsive to Kouga’s affections, but the way the confusion settled over her, he was positive that all of this was new to her. He knew of the hanyou that Kouga had said she loved, but if she truly had loved him then why was she unsure of her feelings for Kouga? Surely she would have explored the relationship with the hanyou if they lived together. “Kagome, may I ask you a personal question?” “Sure.” “The hanyou that you live with, do you love him?” “InuYasha? I love him in the way a sister loves her brother, but it took me a long time to realize that. He’s engaged to be married to a girl named, Aiko. She’s a sweet girl, completely perfect for him.” “So, how do your feelings compare to those you have for Kouga?” “I don’t know. It’s confusing. I was always used to Kouga saying I was ‘his woman’, but we never really got to know one another. I was too busy staring at InuYasha like he was the only man on Earth. I do know that the only people, other than my family, I’ve cried over have been Kouga and my son. Even when Sango and Miroku left I never cried for them because I knew they were happy.” “Your son? Forgive me, but your scent is pure, untouched. How can you have a son?” “Oh, hehe. Shippo’s my adopted kit. His parents were killed in my earlier travels with InuYasha for the jewel shards. He swore revenge, robbed me, and then begged for my help. I just couldn’t leave him on his own, ya know. He’s a good son, but I miss him. He’s training with the Kitsune Elders. I know it’s for the best, I’m only human. I can’t train him in the way he needs to be trained, but it still hurts.” “I’m sorry for your separation from him. It’s remarkable though that a human Miko would adopt a demon kit. I can see that you are one in a million indeed.” She blushed at his words. She was a very kind soul and it made him wonder that if she did choose a life with Kouga if she would be able to withstand their way of life. It was hard and sometimes cruel by any human standards. They were in a constant struggle from one opposing force or another. Their faction was new and therefore considered weak by all surrounding demon Lords. It was a constant battle, which they didn’t mind. The pack would do anything to protect their way of life. Fight or die, it was just that simple. “It’s okay. Umm…so back to your other question. I can’t really say that I feel the same for Kouga as I do InuYasha. I do know that I have thought of Kouga often in the past six years and I’ve told my friends all about him. I know he’s my friend and he would never hurt me or put me in harm’s way.” “I sense a but in there somewhere.” “But, there’s something deep inside, something that I can’t explain. It’s new and unfamiliar. I don’t want to get his hopes up. I never meant to hurt him to begin with and I refuse to do it again. If I could take it all back I would, but Kouga deserves someone strong. Someone the pack will recognize as worthy of their Alpha. The only thing I’ve proven so far is that I can get myself into all kinds of trouble.” He chuckled at this. She was in love with Kouga, he was sure of it. She just needed to realize it and she would in time. “I have a hard time believing that you are weak. I can feel the power radiating from you and no doubt if the cowardly bastard demons hadn’t restrained you, they would be smoldering piles of ash.” “You got that right buddy, but it was my stupidity that let them get the drop on me. Sesshomaru-sama says that it is a blatant weakness to drop your awareness even for a moment because an enemy can strike at any time.” “Lord Sesshomaru is correct, but it seems you have learned the lesson well and I doubt that he would consider you weak because of one mistake. Even seasoned warriors have to be reminded of such things from time to time. You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself, little one.” “Thank you, but it’s easier said than done.” He couldn’t stand the sadness that wound its way into her pleasant scent. She deserved to be happy and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure that she would find it. He had a feeling that despite her fond words and obvious feelings for her friends, she had been sad and alone for a long time. She needed Kouga, like Kouga needed her. She just needed a push in the right direction. “So, my little sister, what would you like to do to pass the time? We could continue to gossip like old women or I could fix you something to eat.” He heard the rumble of her stomach and laughed. “Well, I’m going to take that as a yes. You know it’s nice to have someone who appreciates my cooking. I think you and I are going to get along just fine.”
Kouga stomped back to his den. The Elders were none too pleased that he had disobeyed their orders and took over his normal duties as pack Alpha. It hadn’t even been his idea. Kagome talked him into doing a few patrols. He was perfectly content sitting in the den with her every day. Who was he kidding? He was practically climbing the walls. It wasn’t that he didn’t enjoy spending time with her; he did, more than words could express, but being cooped up indoors was never something he was good at. After he had gotten the taste of responsibly and fresh air, he ordered Saburo to stand down. He enjoyed his normal routine and coming back to Kagome waiting on him every evening was the highlight of his day. She always had something cooked and the den was clean. They would take turns bathing and then they would snuggle under the blankets together. Nothing had happened between them in a romantic way, they were essentially just good friends sharing a living space. He couldn’t say he was that happy about it. He wanted so much more, but with the interference of the Council, it made the whole situation between them more complicated than what it already was. He hadn’t even explained to her what was going to happen during the Council meeting in three days. He was going to have to do that today. He couldn’t put it off anymore. He just hoped she would want to stay a pack member officially. He really hoped she would just stay forever, but he knew that wasn’t going to happen. He thought about his little slip up this morning. He had called her his love, which was true, but he had promised that he wasn’t going to pressure her. She was his world and he mentally slapped himself for making her uncomfortable. He hoped it wouldn’t be awkward when he got back. He wanted her face to light up with her lovely smile when she greeted him. He wanted her to laugh at something silly he had done and he wanted her to slap his arm playfully when he made an inappropriate comment about one of his pack mates. Living with her was so easy and he never wanted her to leave. He couldn’t even remember how he made it so long without her. He stopped by the female den to get Kagome’s clean furs from Natsuki. As much as he enjoyed Kagome wearing his furs, he knew she was more comfortable in her own clothing. He didn’t mind the change; her furs hugged her curves in the most sensuous ways. It teased him more than anything, but he would take that over her not being there any day. Natsuki smiled and walked to him with a pile of folded furs under her arm. The other females were busy doing some indoor crafts to trade in the spring for supplies the pack would need. “I cleaned them all for her and gave her some extra bandages and leather ties.” She said handing the bundle over. “Thanks, Natsuki. I know Kagome appreciates this.” “Psht. It’s no problem. Let her know if she needs anything to send someone to get me. I got to get back to work. See ya, Kouga.” Kouga threw his hand up in farewell and turned to leave. A flash of bright colors in his peripheral vision caught his attention. One of the younger females was sewing delicate glass beads onto silk hair ribbons. His only thought was Kagome. “Hey, kiddo. How much do you sell these for at the market?” He asked, fingering a ruby red creation. “Prince Kouga! I, uh, well, I haven’t been to the markets yet. This will be my first year, so I don’t really know.” She replied in flustered surprise. Kouga sat Kagome’s furs down on a clean part of the table and pulled his coin pouch out. He handed the young girl a few coins and waited for her to display all the finished ribbons. The beadwork on each piece was unique, just like his woman. They were intricate and memorizing, just like his woman. They were beautiful, well not as beautiful as his woman, but close enough. He had to get them. He picked out one of each color, carefully folded them, and tucked them into his armor. “Thanks. You should fetch a good price for such talented work.” The girl just nodded and flushed at his praise. He walked out into the crisp afternoon air and continued on to his own den where Kagome was waiting.
