The Heir and the Spare
The Continent of Japan is in danger; humans and demons are engaged in a deadly war. To avoid calamity Princess Kagome, a human, finds herself betrothed to the heir of the demon-dominated Western Lands, Prince Sesshomaru. Too bad she finds herself falling for her future-husband’s younger brother, Inuyasha.
.xx.
Kagome didn't have time to react; she was whisked away by Sango and the other demonesses-in-waiting as soon as she and Inuyasha arrived at the gates of the castle. She sat, stunned, as her caretakers polished her face with immaculately perfect make up and prepared her light purple kimono.
He's back? She should be excited; her soon-to-be husband would be finally introduced to her and she would meet the demon she would spend the rest of eternity with. But she wasn't. She couldn't be.
How could she? How could she be remotely excited when she spent the last few days getting to know her future brother-in-law? It was an illicit affair that should never have happened...
But it did.
It happened.
And she couldn't rewind the hands of time to erase her feelings for Inuyasha. She wasn't going to lie to herself; she was very attracted to him. He made her feel things that she never possible… things that she, somehow, knew she would never feel with Sesshomaru. Her gut sank lower and lower—why did she even allow herself to get so emotionally attached to Inuyasha? What good did it to?!
Nothing.
No good.
Kagome felt herself being guided off of her seat so that they could undress her and slip her into the kimono. Lifting her hands when instructed, Kagome could only stare off into the distance and try to force her mind, body, and soul to stop thinking about Inuyasha. It was illicit.
It was wrong.
It can’t be wrong… how could it? It felt so…
Kagome swallowed the lump in her throat. She couldn’t rationalize her decisions; she did something wrong and now she would suffer the consequences: marry the brother of the man she was… she was…
I’m in love with…
The realization hurt her more than anything else. It hurt the Princess of the North more than when she learned her fate; to sign her life off as a peace treaty and marry the heir to the Western throne. The knowledge did hurt her, it grated at her nerves and she cursed her ancestors for ever waging battle against legendary demons. The demon clans were all led by the Dog Generals, despite there being various breed-oriented monarchs, and Inutaisho maintained that the Dogs were the most powerful, most influential, and most dangerous breed of demons known to existence.
So Kagome could do nothing but curse her ancestors for choosing to wage war against the Dogs.
But…
She couldn’t hate him. The demons must’ve done something that triggered the humans to stand their ground. And, on a much more selfish note, it was the reason as to why she met Inuyasha. Kagome exhaled loudly and closed her eyes.
But it’s not allowed.
“Ready, Highness?”
Kagome’s eyes fluttered open and she was surprised, hurt, happy, and scared to see Inuyasha. Her emotions, however, were not a secret to him; he was able to sense all the emotions that ran through her. The demon that controlled his blood was demanding release but he kept it at bay. This was his brother’s woman; but he couldn’t—he wasn’t—regretting anything. Inuyasha was positive that the last few days with Kagome, however brief and short-lived, had to be the best few days in his entire century-long life.
And that was a bold declaration.
“You shall be escorting me to the foyer?” Kagome mustered her most diplomatic tone that she could under the given circumstance. The demonesses bowed and took their leave and Sango retired to her room, a smaller dwelling that was much closer to Kagome’s room. Izayoi determined that having Sango close to Kagome would ease her anxiousness and relocated the human lady-in-waiting from the servants’ quarters to a private quarter.
That left only Kagome and Inuyasha in her room; a confrontation that she was hoping to avoid.
Inuyasha nodded the affirmative to her question and held his arm out. “Yes, I shall. Are you prepared to meet your groom, Princess Kagome?”
Her spine stiffened, yet that didn’t stop her from slipping her arm over the arm that he was offering. So he was going to play that game hmm? She could play just as well.
In fact, even better.
“I am more than prepared, Prince Inuyasha.” She responded as they both set off with a rather languid pace. Neither was anxious to see Sesshomaru’s grand entrance into the foyer; apparently he had been back for quite some time but had remained hidden from their parents. His vassal, Jaken, was playing the role of messenger and directed short conversations between Inutaisho and Izayoi, and Sesshomaru.
“In fact,” Kagome didn’t give Inuyasha the opportunity to slip in his two cents, “I feel that you should prepare to refer and call me ‘sister’.” She spared him an idle glance and didn’t miss the tightening of his jaw. His eyes were set dead ahead and the sinew in his neck were tense. He did not like what he heard.
Good. Kagome thought contentedly. To think you could get away with pretending you don’t care. That hurt her too, knowing that he was acting like it didn’t bother him.
Maybe it didn’t?
Maybe he really didn’t care and he was just… fooling around?
Before Kagome could even realize what she thought, she was pushed into a dark corner and enveloped by Inuyasha’s body. His face was buried in her neck; she stood stunned. What’s happening? Inuyasha had his arms wrapped around her tiny waist and he pulled her as close to his body as he could get her.
“Don’t you dare doubt me…” He croaked his voice slightly cracking. “I can smell your apprehension, Highness.” Oh, the way he drawled her title… “What you’re assuming is horsesh—“
“Don’t swear.”
“…shoe. What you’re assuming is horseshoe.” He pulled back. “What the hell, wench?! Here I am acting caring and possessive and you’re worried about my vulgar vocabulary?!”
Kagome cocked an eyebrow. “I cannot allow such language to be spoken around me, Prince Inuyasha,” she tried to withdraw herself from him but he wasn’t having any of it. “Besides, I need to monitor your vocabulary, I do not wish for my children to exercise the same dictionary as their uncle.” Her voice was dull. “It would be quite the—“
“To hell with that, Kagome. You are mine.” Without giving her a chance to react Inuyasha pressed his lips against hers and held her arms above her head, locking them with only one of his hands. Though stunned momentarily, Kagome was quick to recover and sunk into the feel of his warmth with much gratitude; this was what she wanted. Inuyasha used the index finger of his free hand to trace down the side of Kagome’s face, down her temple and over her cheek; down the length of her neck, where he made sure to rub his thumb by the back of her earlobe (a spot where he learned quickly that was quite sensitive for Kagome); and continued his travels to her bosom.
Kagome gasped into the kiss when Inuyasha gently took hold of her left breast. Her arms, all the while, were locked above her head.
“Say it,” he groaned against her lips, moving his ministrations to her neck where he ran his tongue up and down, not leaving any skin unkissed. “Tell me you’re mine.”
Kagome’s mouth was opened but no sound came; as quickly as the urge to moan came it was swallowed when Inuyasha’s lips found another spot that made her skin crawl with ecstasy. This wasn’t right… Sesshomaru was… he was…
He…
“Say it.” His voice was huskier, more of a growl. Kagome’s throat rumbled and she threw her head back. “Highness…” Inuyasha’s lips moved away from her neck and worked their way back to her lips; he didn’t waste a single second to taste her once again.
“N-no…” Kagome was able to stutter out, twisting her wrists so that she could release herself from Inuaysha’s grip. “Pr-Prince Inuyasha…” Kagome’s voice was meek but her determination was growing. Oh, so he could parade around with her, kiss her, make her feel all happy and horseshoey, then turn around and pretend everything’s okay because his brother was back and still kiss the living sh—shoe out of her?!
She didn’t think so.
With much regret, Kagome moved her head away from Inuyasha’s hot lips. “No. Your brother—my groom—is waiting for us in the foyer. I believe that engaging in such forbidden actions is not morally acceptable.”
She missed the flash of red in his eyes, but the colour returned to normal as quick as it changed. Inuyasha’s jaw tightened and he, reluctantly, withdrew from Kagome. “Ah, right, my brother. Amusing how now what we’re engaging in can be considered forbidden, isn’t it, Highness?”
Kagome shot him a glare whilst fixing her kimono. “Pardon me, Prince Inuyasha, but I had never instigated any such actions.”
“Yet you weren’t reluctant in reciprocating, were you?”
It was Kagome’s turn to tighten her jaw. “Need I remind you that I had drowned when you first, supposedly, kissed me back to life.”
For a brief moment the anger in Inuyasha’s eyes subsided. Why did that feel like an eternity ago?
“Yet you did not stop when I continued to further our relationship.”
“What relationship?!”
“This!” Inuyasha grabbed Kagome’s upper arm and pulled her closer to him. “Us. You. Me. Can you tell me that you do not even feel one eighth of how I feel?”
“One eighth? You will not understand how much I’ve come to care about you, but can you tell me if it’ll matter at all?! In a matter of days I will be your sister through marriage and then what’ll you do? Reminisce the past?” Kagome scoffed. “No, Prince, you won’t. We both have to agree that what happened was wrong; we shouldn’t have done what we did and we cannot let it continue.”
Inuyasha crossed his arms yet he didn’t move away from Kagome. “I cannot agree to anything you just said, Kagome.”
As her name rolled off his tongue, her heart skipped a beat. Despite her failing-nonchalant façade, Kagome was sure that she had fallen for him despite how brief their rendezvous were.
“I also refuse to agree that you will be helping me woo other women on the surface of Miyaji River,” Inuyasha adjusted the pins that kept his cape secure. “I cannot accept such things when it was you who I found whilst on the surface of the blasted river.”
Kagome’s world stopped. Everything faded and she zoned in onto that last sentence Inuyasha said, but he was oblivious to her reaction.
“You and I can both conduct a drama and act as if nothing ever happened between us, but you cannot escape the tru—“ He was pleasantly surprised to be interrupted by Kagome’s lips. Her hands cupped his face whilst her lips worked gently around his. Indirectly he had told her his true heart’s feelings.
And she was supposed to marry his brother.
Life’s ironies were sick and twisted.
Stopping rather reluctantly, Kagome’s eyes locked with Inuyasha’s. “We can never let that happen again.” She murmured, her voice breaking. Tears were beginning to gather under her eyelids, threatening to ruin the makeup the demonesses had worked so hard to apply. “Miyaji River or not, we cannot let this continue.”
Inuyasha studied her and his heart sank knowing that what she said made sense.
It made sense the entire time; he was choosing to be irrational.
Rejecting everything that his heart told him, Inuyasha nodded with a sense of dread. He chose not to acknowledge the pain that came with the lack of reciprocation from Kagome; he had practically told her he loved her! She knew about the Legend of the Miyaji River and all she had to say was that they could not continue.
Perhaps she really didn’t care for him as much as he did for her.
Whatever the case may be, Inuyasha had no more time to ponder the situations. His brother would be arrived at the main foyer any moment and he and Kagome had to be present. Ensuring that they were both presentable, he resumed the escort to where their presence was requested. Kagome’s hand trembled slightly and Inuyasha felt it, as it was resting atop his.
Their interaction on the second storey was bittersweet; Inuyasha felt like he lost her… yet she was never his to begin with.
Once again Sesshomaru won.
He won with his bloodline; he was a full breed.
He won with his title; he was firstborn.
And he won with Kagome; he was the heir…
What would be the benefits of Kagome being allowed to be with the spare? Absolutely nothing. Fine, if that was how the cards of destiny were to be dealt, Inuyasha would not object. He didn’t believe in the destiny and fate nonsense, but he knew that there was no way of changing what was going to happen.
Kagome would be Sesshomaru’s, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
The two entered the foyer and he dropped Kagome off with where all the ladies were waiting and manoeuvred his way to where his father and mother were waiting. He nodded at his father and took his place by his side; straight posture and an expressionless face.
He missed his mother looking at him and Kagome.
He missed the knowing look in her eyes.
And he definitely missed it when his mother heard the pleas that his heart was sending.
.xx.
So it’s been a lifetime and a half since I updated but hey, I’m still here! Hope you enjoyed this chapter; I was going to have Sesshomaru debut but I figured, nahhhh! Let’s have a lover’s quarrel instead! The language used in this story and the way I put it together is not like my other stories, I’m trying to be a bit more… ‘poetic’ I guess? I don’t know what word I’m looking for but whatever the word may be, I’m trying to do THAT.
Anyway, stay tuned! Promise you won’t have to wait so long this time!
