A Christmas Family Vacation
by Nikkie23534
Marshall cabin...
The master bedroom...
InuYasha turned off the overhead spray, and stepped out of the shower. He toweled himself off before wrapping it around his waist. Grabbing his hair brush, he walked out of the bath into the bedroom. He stopped dead in his tracks when he came upon a rather delectable sight.
Sesshomaru, dressed in nothing but a towel himself, was looking through the wardrobe for something to wear. He watched in fascination, as droplets of water slowly trailed down his broad back. His muscles flexing like heated iron and a sinful ass dimpled beneath that damnable terry cloth
Sensing his young husband behind him, Sesshomaru looked over his shoulder, and smirked at the heated look of hunger flashing in his beloved's eyes. A little trickle of drool slipping from the corner of his mouth. "See something you like, 'baby' brother?" He asked with a smile, using his thumb to wipe away the spit. "Because we can see about taking care of that before you soak the floor.”
InuYasha jumped back shaking his head to clear it. Feeling little embarrassed, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "B- baka. Shut up," he snapped, his face turning every shade of red. "I think I got enough of you to last awhile now." He waving his brush in front of his mate's smirking face, "besides, we need to get a move on or else our little hime will be beating down our door." He said as he began rummaging through the drawers, pulling out underwear for himself and his mate. Sitting on the edge of the bed, he began running the brush through his hair. Cursing as he hit a couple of tangles. "Stupid damned hair. Shit always gets all tangled up every time." He was in mid stroke when the brush was taken out of his hand. Looking up he saw Sesshomaru standing next to him.
"Allow me", he said using his fingers to separate a section of his hair. "If you would run the comb through your hair while it's still wet, instead of waiting around like you did, then maybe you could avoid the tangles." Sesshomaru remarked, as he gently ran the brush down Inu's hair.
InuYasha smiled, closing his eye in pleasure as his mate carefully groomed his thick locks. "Hmmm... and, miss having you act as my own personal stylist? Not on your long life, 'big' brother." He joked, just before Sesshomaru hit an unruly snag in his long locks. "Owww..." he winced, a hand flying to the abused spot. Sesshomaru chuckled softly, then bent down and kissed the spot.
Whispering a soft, 'gomen, my love'. Once that task was done, the 2 dressed and left the room heading downstairs. On the way, they were met in the hall by Shoji coming out of the room he shared with his siblings his. The boy was carrying the old well used sketch book his To- San had gifted him with sometime ago.
Seeing his parents the teen stopped and nodded. "Chichi- ue. To- san. Are we gonna be going soon?"
Sesshomaru nodded back to his second son. "Hai, Shoji, we will be soon. Where is everyone?"
"W- well, I- Ichi is trying to teach Obaa- Sama how to play gin rummy, and Sumi is cheering whoever wins." Sesshomaru nods again.
InuYasha, standing back watching the little exchange, stares at the two. 'Good grief, you would think this would get easier over the years.' He mused to himself, shaking his head at the little father son 'report' as it were. 'Kami! Sho looks like a low level grunt reporting to the general!' Sighing to himself, he reached out and gently tousled the unruly silver mane that was so much like his own. Earning a half groan of embarrassment and concealed joy from his youngest son.
The boy winced and swatted half heartedly at his birthing father's hand, trying to dislodge it from his head. "Geez, To- San! I wish you would stop doing that!" Using his claws to put it back the way it was. "Man, Ichi already gives me enough grief as it is over how I look." Once satisfied with his hair, he then turned back to his fathers.
Inu grinned at the pout on the boy's face. "Oh lighten up a little, you'll live longer!" He teased the boy, as his mate watched stonily. Looking down at the sketch book in his son's hand, Sesshomaru's curiosity was peaked. "Are you planning on drawing something before we leave, musuko?"
Silently pleased by his Chichi's interest, the boy fixed his awe filled gaze to his father. "O- oh no, Chichi- ue." the boy replied, "Obaa- Sama wanted to see my drawings. She said she wanted to see what I'd been workin' on." He said with a small smile of pride. It wasn't everyday that his Chichi- ue actually took much interest in his artwork or asked what he's done. He received a slew of praise from his art teachers, his siblings, and especially his To- San. But, Chichi- ue always seemed way to busy to look at his drawings. When he did, Shoji had a feeling it was mostly due to his To- San's urgings.
The corners of Sesshomaru's mouth lifted sightly as he saw the look on his son's face. He had seen the drawings in Shoji's book, and was taken back by the awesome raw talent the boy displayed. Sesshomaru was proud of his son's achievement. He could see where Shoji had clearly inherited his mate's eye and skill with a simple brush stroke. Sesshomaru shared InuYasha's view that with little more time and training, the boy would reach extraordinary heights. "Hn. Well let's not keep them all waiting. There is the matter of a tree to procure." He started down the stairway, when he was discreetly jabbed in the back by his frowning mate. "Pray tell, my beloved. What is it that I have done to deserve being assaulted?"
InuYasha stood with his arms crossed over his chest. With a slight jerk of his head, InuYasha gestured towards their son. The boy stood behind them with his head down, a look of dejection clearly etched on the youth's face. "Would it kill you to say something to the boy?"
"What, exactly do you mean?" He asked, looking at his youngest son. He noticed that the boy's demeanor and aura had changed. He could sense the child's disappointment, but couldn't figure out why the boy felt that way. Looking to his mate, he asked, "Why is my son so disheartened? What is disturbing him so?"
"Has it ever occurred to you that your son might be waiting for you to say something?"
One thin brow raised in curiosity. "About?"
InuYasha dragged his hand over his face, wondering to himself if his mate was truly that clueless! 'The man can make decisions that affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people on a daily basis. Brokering multi billion dollar deals, and can't manage a regular conversation with his own children! Sighing heavily, InuYasha placed his hand on his husband's shoulder. "Sesshomaru, Look at the boy. He hopin' for some sort sign that you approve of him. Shoji's lookin' for his Chichi- ue to place his hand on his head and say 'good job son'. Look at him Sessho! He's just dying for you to say anything positive to him. Outside of 'study a little harder or take a note from your aniki, and try a little harder'.
It was then that Sesshomaru turned to take a good look at his youngest son. As if realizing for the first time the truth of InuYasha's words. It was never his intention to ignore or overlook any of his children's achievements. He knew that he was stern when it came to their studying and their lessons on their culture. Those things are very important to their kind, and Sesshomaru wanted his pups to be proud of their heritage. But, he didn't realize that he was ignoring or making his son feel unappreciated. Looking back towards his son, who was now walking past them towards the stairway. "What is it that I should do?" He questioned absent- mindedly, not realizing that the link to his mate was still open.
"First off, you need to pull your head out of your ass and say something to our son. This IS what you wanted, isn't it? You wanted to spend this time connecting with the pups, now's your chance. So, go over there and talk to the boy." InuYasha turned towards the stairs, but before he walked away he turned to his mate and added, "If you don't, it'll be your ass, sleepin' in that damn box in the damn garage!"
Sesshomaru's mouth dropped as he stared at InuYasha's retreating back. "You can't be serious?!"
"Try my babe!" InuYasha fired back at his bewildered mate, as he walked down the stairs.
With a heavy sigh, Sesshomaru followed his mate downstairs. Leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest, he watched his family. Nestled on the large sofa, was his mother surrounded by his pups. The twins flanked her on either side with Masumi snuggled in her lap. They're eyes all glued to the opened sketch book in Sho's hands. The corners of his mouth curled upwards, as his ears picked up the words of awe and praise reached his ears.
"Oh, Shoji dear, I had no idea that you were this talented." Chihoshi remarked as she turned a page. "Now, I can see why InuYasha's praises your work so highly. You have a wonderful eye, magomusuko*."
"Arigato, Obaa- Sama", answered the teen. His face flushed with delight at his regal grandmother's praise. "I hope one day to showcase my work in To- San's gallery." He turned a couple of pages to one particular drawing. It was a particular sketch. "I transferred this one to canvas. It got the merit award at school during the last art festival!" The boy gushed proudly!
Chihoshi looked down at her second grandson, a frown marring her perfect features. "Merit? Why is that?" She asked, turning back to look at the drawing again. "From the detail of this sketch, the painting must have extraordinary! Why did it only get a merit award?"
When Shoji hunched his shoulders, and turned the page. Shoichi looked up at their Obaa Sama. "Obaa Sama, it was a state wide competition, and he was placed in the high school category. But, I felt that it was demeaning of his talent. His work deserved better than that, so I entered it into the college category instead. Foolish judges tried to disqualify it, but To- San intervened. And, they ended up giving Sho the a stupid Merit award instead." Shoichi explained, giving his little brother a good natured jab on the arm. "Just wait until next year. Shoji will take first place like he deserves!" Chihoshi nodded, giving her youngest grandson a pat on his cheek.
As Sesshomaru took in the scene before him, little Sumi squealed in delight. The girl jumped off her Obaa Sama's lap, and ran to her sire. Plastering herself to his leg. "Yay! To- San, To- San! To- San is up, now we can go and get our twee!"
Running a clawed hand through her hair, Sesshomaru gave her a gentle scratch behind one perfect little downy ear. "Hai, musume. And, it's may we go, not can we go." He corrected, untangling her arms from his leg.
Just then InuYasha came out of the kitchen with 2 thermoses in his hands. "Okay you guys! We are leaving. Go get coats, hats, gloves, etc, and let's get this party on the road!" At his orders, the pups made a beeline for the entrance way where all their outer wear was stored. Their Obaa Sama following them at a more graceful pace.
Sesshomaru turned to follow them, when his eyes landed on Sho's sketch book laying abandoned on the sofa. Curiosity, driving him forward he picked up the book. Just as he was about to open it, Shoji hurried back into the room. "Chichi -ue", the boy called out, walking back into the great room. "Chichi- ue, To- San says that you need to get a move on..." The boy froze in mid sentence his head tilted to the side, when he catches sight of his art book in his father's powerful hands. "Chichi- ue?"
Sesshomaru looked at his son for a moment, then turned to sit down on the couch. He flipped the book open and began going through the sketches. "Hn?"
The boy nervously licked his lips, as he watched his sire looking at his work. It always made him a little nervous being in the same room as with his powerful. All his life he'd idolize Sesshomaru. Contrary to what everyone thought, he actually did listen when to the stories the elders told. Shoji was not 'spacing out' as his To- San would put it. He would often be envisioning what they were saying. In his mind, he could almost see the battles his parents where engaged in. Skies dark and cloudy with smoke. Weapons and bodies of the fallen, liter the blood soaked earth. And, in the midst of the silenced chaos stood the mighty figure of his father.
Lost in his our musings, he missed his father calling out to him. He jumped as his father's voice finally penetrated his thoughts. "O- oh... G- gomen, Chichi- ue. I... did you say something, sir?"
Seeing his son's tense state, Sesshomaru wanted to set the boy at ease. 'What in the world would InuYasha do in moments like this?' He questioned himself, wishing that his husband was here at the moment. He'd always been able to talk to the pups, 'damn it, how does Inu manage to make this look so easy!'
"Geez, man! You thinking about this wayyy too hard! Just talk to the kid! Damn!" The corners of Sesshomaru's mouth lifted in a small smile at his husband's scolding. His eyes softened as he gazed at his young son. "Shoji. Musuko, come sit with me", he invites the boy patting the space beside him. He watched as the boy slowly walked up and sat at a short distance from him. Watching the boy's actions, Sesshomaru felt a pang in his heart over the distance between him and his pup. He saw the boy's eyes shifting back to the book, and this gave him an idea.
"Pardon me, Musuko", he said running a hand over the smooth hard cover. "I happened to see your pad laying here, and was curious." He added as he watched his son's face. "I'm sorry. I should have asked your permission instead of taking liberties. Forgive me." He asked, as he handed the book back to his son.
Taking the book in both hands Sho's mind went blank, as he stared eyes wide in astonishment! Chichi- ue just apologized! To... HIM!
Sesshomaru felt his smile widen just a hair, as he gazed upon his youngest son. He reminded Sesshomaru of InuYasha so much it sometimes scared and delighted him. In his mind, Shoji was a perfect copy of his otouto. Although, he wasn't as brash and uncouth as InuYasha had been in his early years. The boy did inherit a lot of his birther's qualities. Qualities that Sesshomaru had, over the years, grown to love in his love. Now are even more endearing in his son. The way Shoji would scratch the back of his head and blush, when he was embarrassed. The way his pointed ears and upturned nose would wiggle and twitch, indicating that he was about to wake up. Even the way he ate. Although, he had better manners than InuYasha did at his age, the boy ate with the same enthusiasm!
Sesshomaru was so lost in his musings, that he almost missed his son's question. Looking in the boy's hesitant face, he tilted his head to the side. "What did you say?"
Gulping nervously, Shoji held the book up to him. "I- I asked if you would like to see what I did. I- I would r- really like to ha- have your opinion, sir."
Sesshomaru took the book and began flipping through it again. Few pages were just simple sketches. Outlines of shapes. Spheres, triangle, squares etc shown in dimensions, sizes and shading. The next were nature drawing. Trees, flowers, and birds. "Hn. These are quite good, Shoji." He remarked, taking in all the little details in the sketch. "You've definitely inherited your To- San's gift for the arts. There really very well done, my son."
Shoji's mind stopped for a moment. Surely his ears were deceiving him, he shook his head to clear it as he watched his father looking through his work. And, praising it. "It's not really all that great. They're just some simple doodles I did when I was bored." He said, trying to down play it. However on the inside, his mind was shouting with joy and his heart was doing flips! "To- San says that I still have a ways to go, but he and art teacher was impressed with my work."
Suddenly, Sesshomaru remembered that he heard them talking about the award Shoji had won. Turning to his son, he handed the book to him. "Shoji, show me the drawing your brother entered for you. The one in which you received the award."
The boy froze. Even though he was overjoyed at his sire's interest in anything he did. But, he was also extremely hesitant. He wasn't smart like Shoichi was. His aniki was the perfect heir apparent. A natural born leader and alpha. Sho admired his older brother. Though he'd rip his own tongue out before he'd ever admit it out loud. And, then there was Masumi. His beloved little sister. Not only was she the only girl, but was the sunshine in their home. Just seeing her smile or hearing her laugh, seemed to make everyone's day.
"O- okay", he said softly with a nervous sigh. Taking the book, he flipped to the end. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath holding the book to his chest. Opening his eyes, he looked his sire directly in the face before handing the book back. "It's just... Just a rough sketch, Sir." He sat quietly, as his father nodded and took the book.
Gazing at the 'rough sketch', Sesshomaru was taken back! To say what he was looking at was good was an understatement. To Sesshomaru, the sketch was breath- taking! Sesshomaru's fingers touched the drawing with reverent awe. His eyes bright with the tears that will remain unshed. "When did you? How did you?" He whispered, staring at the drawing in disbelief.
There have been only a handful of moments that have rendered the demon lord speechless. The first was when InuYasha caught him off guard, by kissing his first! The second was when Rin and Kohaku told him and InuYasha of their intentions to marry. There was also the day InuYasha told him that he was to be a father for the first time. But, this... This was something that almost brought the mighty demon warrior to tears!
In the drawing was of Sesshomaru standing victorious on a hill top, over looking a bloody battlefield. The mighty Bakusaiga raised in victory. At his side, InuYasha stood proudly, fully completed Tessaiga resting cockily on his shoulder. Above them both, a lone figure shone through a break in the clouds. As if giving his approval and blessings. "I called it 'Shori no'*."
Sesshomaru's head turned to his son, "what?"
The boy gulped licked his dry lips. "Um... I said I called it Shori no, Sir."
Sesshomaru nodded turning his gaze back to the picture. "How were you capable of this?" He asked in wonder, marveling at all the detail that was put into every line and curve of his father face. From the way his long hair was secured in that high tight top not. The single jagged stripe on each cheek. Even though, the sketch was devoid of color, the boy somehow managed to capture the mischievous little glint in the late Inu No Taisho' eyes. Something that no other artist had ever been close to capturing. The same little spark in his eye that InuYasha and Masume had inherited. "Shoji, how did you know what my father looked like?"
Sho smiled, relaxing a bit for the first time. "Oh well, that was very easy! I asked the old flea, Myoga- san to describe him to me. He said to imagine To- San with a more regal look. Give him a leaner face, with your height and demeanor. You know that 'don't start none, and there won't be none' look you get just before you have a big meeting."
"I see. But, his eyes, Shoji. His eyes are perfect." looking back at the portrait he placed his hand on his father's image. "How did you get his eyes exactly right?"
"That was the easiest of all", the boy explained with a bigger smile than before. "Old Myoga- san just told to me give him To- San's eyes. I think that was the key to it! To- San's eyes always looked like he's up to something or making fun of something!" The boy laughed, but his laughter turned to shock as he heard his Chichi- ue chuckle softly. "Sir?"
"Well, you are right about that. Father was always up to something", he stated with a fond smile. "He, like your To- San, where always able to find the lighter side of things. I seemed to be their favorite target!" Sesshomaru shook his head, remembering all the times that his father made him the butt of some practical joke! "You're grandsire used to tell me, 'Lighten up, my boy! You're going to be around for a long time, if your lucky. If you don't find something that makes you laugh, you'll be ancient before your time!' "
Shoji smiled, giving his father a curious look. "He sounds like he was a lot of fun, Chichi- ue."
"Hai, he was." Sesshomaru looked into his son's bright eyes. He noticed, for the first time, that Shoji also had the same twinkle in his eyes as his father. "Shoji, I'm not like your To- San. I'm not very good at... No, that's not right. I have NEVER been good at showing how I feel. Nor, am I the best at talking about my feelings." Putting the book down on the coffee table in front of them, Sesshomaru sighed trying to put his thoughts into words.
However, Shoji beat him to it. "I know that Chichi. You're a demon of actions, not of words. That is why we all look up to you so much!" Sesshomaru stared at his son in complete shock! Why was it that this 15 year old could say in just 8 little words, what he couldn't! Then his answer came. "To- San told us, that it's more your way to show us how much you love us, than to tell us. That is why he's the 'hands on' dad, and your the 'guidin' hands' dad." The boy said with a broad smile. And, once again Sesshomaru was gifted with yet another feature of his father. "I'm just sorry that the finished painting only got the merit award. Had it been better, the judges would have been forced to reconsider their decision." The boy said dejected.
Sesshomaru reached over, and placed his arm around the boy's shoulder pulling him close. Using his forefinger he raised the boy's startled gaze to meet his. "Listen to me, and listen well. You are young, yes. And, you are lacking the experience and skill of that of artists far older. But, your talent is undeniable. It's raw, yes, but it's there. Keep on your chosen path my son. And, know this", Sesshomaru pulled his son into a tight hug. "I am very proud of you, musuko. And, I always will be proud of you!"
After the initial shock, Shoji wrapped his arms around his father. Hugging him tightly while burying his nose in his father's strong chest, deeply inhaling the comforting scent of his sire. "Arigato, Chichi- ue! Arigato!"
The two of them stayed like that for a few minutes more, before... "Sesshomaru. Shoji." They both turned to see InuYasha standing in the large archway leading to the entrance. They ended their embrace, raising to their feet they turned and walked towards him.
Smiling at his son, InuYasha reached out riffling the boy's silver hair again. Only this time, the boy smiled and hugged his birthing father around his waist. "Make sure you bundle up, son. It's snowing again."
"Hai, To- San." The boy turned and left his parents to get dressed for the snow.
After the boy left, InuYasha looked up at his mate. Tilting his head back a little, he kissed his husband's cheek. Sesshomaru looked down at him. "What was that for, beloved
InuYasha smiled giving him a sweet kiss on his lips. "A reward for a job well done, my love."
