Chapter 9: Plans
~*~*~
The bright, scorching rays of the glaring summertime sun continued to beam down fiercely at the land below it, as the sun rested high in the cloudless, blue afternoon sky.
Kagome groaned in her sleep, yet again, as she gripped a fistful of soft silk in her small hands; Sesshoumaru watched intently and helplessly as his mate clung tightly to the opening of his yukata as she reacted from one of her numerous nightmares.
Sesshoumaru silently wished for a way to ease Kagome’s nightmares; he knew that those dreams involved him and that fateful night.
If only he could show her that he had truly meant no harm.
Sesshoumaru didn’t want to take her that way, but it meant that she would be by his side; away from harm and under his protection.
Sesshoumaru pulled her soft body closer against his firm chest before he leaned in closer to nuzzle his mark upon her neck; the crescent moon shaped mark glowed softly in response before it faded back to normal.
It seemed to have helped a little, as Sesshoumaru discovered earlier.
His youki appeared to have caused distress in Kagome’s aura; triggering even more onsets of her nightmares as she felt danger nearby.
However, Kagome was mated to him and it couldn’t do any real harm as it would with other youkai, but it did seem to strengthen the effects of her nightmares.
Touching his mark on her shoulder reminded Kagome’s aura that he was not her enemy, that they were mated for life and that she was bonded to him. Because of that, it temporarily eased her nightmare away.
Nevertheless, it was only temporary.
The only way of truly fixing it was to gain Kagome’s complete trust through emotional, mental and physical bonding.
As Sesshoumaru held Kagome in a close embrace, he allowed one of his clawed hands to travel down to the slight bump of her belly before gently rubbing it.
Pretty soon, she would be cradling their pups in her arms without a single care in the world.
While Kagome focused on caring for their infant children, Sesshoumaru would use the distraction to initiate another major part of his plan...
Tetsusaiga.
For a while, Sesshoumaru gave up on his quest for obtaining the fang sword, since he had Tokijin, an even powerful sword than that of Inuyasha’s.
However, during a recent visit to Totosai, Sesshoumaru discovered that he needed the Tetsusaiga to complete and perfect a secret technique that the Tenseiga held; Meido Zangetsuha.
Sesshoumaru growled; the deep vibrations of the sound caused Kagome to stir a little bit and furrow her brow, before she settled back into a peaceful slumber.
As much he was grateful for the Tenseiga, since it had spared his loved ones from an untimely death, Sesshoumaru still felt annoyed by his father’s constant interference; despite the fact that the Great Dog Demon himself had been dead for nearly a century.
It always seemed as though his father was constantly hindering his plans for supreme conquest from beyond the grave.
No matter.
If it meant prying the Tetsusaiga from that half-breed whelp’s cold, dead claws, then Sesshoumaru would.
It would be enjoyable to take away something else that Inuyasha held so dearly and possess it for his own.
Kagome belonged to him and now the Tetsusaiga would become his as well.
Sesshoumaru smirked against Kagome’s neck in satisfaction as his other clawed hand reached up to lovingly stroke the back of her long, silky ebony locks of hair.
Due to the fact that his mate was indeed human, Sesshoumaru could hold the Tetsusaiga with no problems at all, as his father once did; simply because he now possessed a small portion of a human’s aura.
Certainly, his father could have never expected him to find such a way around the Tetsusaiga’s protective barrier, even the Great Dog Demon would’ve never suspected that his eldest son would be mated to a human.
Sesshoumaru’s plan was quickly falling into place.
Eventually, Inuyasha would discover Kagome’s whereabouts and would come running straight to her…where Sesshoumaru would be waiting for him; fully prepared.
He could have easily killed Inuyasha many times, but because of Kagome’s loyalty to the disgraceful half-breed, he decided to let the whelp live for her sake.
Now that Kagome was his, Sesshoumaru had no further reason to keep the hanyou alive.
Of course, Sesshoumaru would allow his mate to see her former companion before he took his life; Inuyasha would get a chance to see and smell that Kagome belonged to a real Alpha.
Sesshoumaru blinked out of his reverie as he sensed someone on the other side of the large bedroom doors.
“I am sorry to disturb you, my Lord. But the young mistress and master has requested to see you and the Lady,” Atsuko’s muffled voice said reverently from the other side of the barrier.
“I am not accepting any visitors today,” Sesshoumaru said curtly as he pulled away from Kagome’s neck to rest his chin on top of her head.
Sesshoumaru could hear more muffled voices from the other side, before Atsuko’s voice returned.
“I’m sorry, my Lord, but the children insist on seeing their mother,” Atsuko pressed.
Sesshoumaru sighed irritably as he considered on whether to let his two wards in; protectively, he wrapped his large, fluffy tail around Kagome’s small form.
Sesshoumaru knew that the pair of children would be too stubborn to give up on seeing him and Kagome, but he could easily send them away.
However, if he did send them away, it would raise further suspicion in the kitsune…and unfortunately, that would mean he would have to silence the little fox.
The children wouldn’t have to stay long; just long enough to see that Kagome was fine and that he had returned home safely from his travel.
“As long as they remain quiet and keep the visit short, they are allowed to enter,” Sesshoumaru stated before he heard the large bedroom doors slide open.
Quickly, Rin and Shippo entered the large bedroom, trying to run as fast and silently as they can to reach the other side where the platform was.
Rin was so eager to see her new mother as well as Lord Sesshoumaru that she refused to do her afternoon lessons until she actually saw them.
Shippo, on the other hand, just wanted to make sure that Kagome was alright.
They had heard that Kagome had some sort of accident and that Lord Sesshoumaru returned home to make sure that she was alright. When Shippo pressed for more details, Atsuko simply stated that Kagome was alright and just needed to rest for a couple of days.
Shippo wouldn’t believe a word anyone said until he physically saw that Kagome was doing well.
It didn’t take them long to run up the few steps of the huge platform, before the sleeping room’s door slid open cautiously; Rin peered carefully into the room before a big smile spread across her face.
“Lord Sesshoumaru!” Rin whispered excitedly as she ran over to kneel by Sesshoumaru’s side of the futon before Shippo carefully entered into the bedroom.
“I trust that you have behaved well in my absence?” Sesshoumaru inquired softly; keeping his baritone voice low to prevent Kagome from stirring in her sleep.
Rin nodded happily, as she gestured for Shippo to come over by her side, before she began to give mundane details about her afternoon studies and her time spent with Shippo.
Tentatively, Shippo approached the futon from the door as he warily kept his eyes on the powerful inuyoukai holding a sleeping Kagome, before the small kitsune silently knelt beside a beaming Rin.
Shippo glanced over at Kagome’s sleeping form before he glanced back at Sesshoumaru.
Perhaps, Rin was right.
Kagome looked very peaceful as she slept in Sesshoumaru’s embrace, that maybe Rin was right about Kagome not loving Inuyasha.
That was until something shiny caught his eye.
Shippo glanced back at Kagome and noticed a sapphire rosary around her neck that was stylishly smaller than the large one around Inuyasha’s neck.
Is that a rosary of subjugation? Shippo wondered with worry as he continued to stare at the sapphire and silver necklace around his adopted mother’s neck.
Sesshoumaru followed Shippo’s line of sight and knew what the kitsune was staring at so intently.
The kit was more intelligent than he gave him credit for; it was obvious that the small fox demon was making the connection between Inuyasha’s rosary and that of Kagome’s.
Sesshoumaru would have to take great caution while around his mate’s ward. He wasn’t going to underestimate him as he did with the taijiya.
“That’s a pretty necklace,” Rin whispered in awe, drawing the two youkai’s attention as she also stared at the rosary.
“It is her wedding gift,” Sesshoumaru stated impassively; leaving no room for discussion as he narrowed his amber eyes in warning at the kitsune, who opened his mouth to question him.
“Lord Sesshoumaru, when will Lady Kagome have the babies?” Rin asked softly as she stared at her new mother’s tummy.
She looked only a little bit pregnant to Rin; which disappointed the small girl as she was already impatient about twin’s arrival.
“A few weeks,” Sesshoumaru answered quietly as he kept his intense gaze on the kitsune.
Rin’s expression brightened at Sesshoumaru’s words; her new siblings were going to arrive very soon and that excited her even more because she would get to have new playmates.
“A few weeks?!” Shippo almost squeaked loudly, as the Taiyoukai glared at him and Rin shushed him with a playful pat on the arm.
“Yes. Kagome is a miko and because of that, her pregnancy has been sped up significantly,” Sesshoumaru explained indifferently as he focused his attention back on his mate; wrapping his tail even closer around her small form, causing her to sigh contentedly in her sleep because of its softness.
Just then, Sesshoumaru sensed another individual outside of his bedchamber’s door.
“We need to talk, my Lord,” Katsutoshi’s voice said from behind the barrier protected door.
Sesshoumaru inwardly sighed as the muscle in his jaw tightened.
Couldn’t he at least have one entire day to himself and his mate?
“Tomorrow. I am not in the mood for more visitors,” Sesshoumaru growled back in youkai.
“It is a matter of importance,” Katsutoshi urged as he growled back in their inuyoukai language.
“Tomorrow,” Sesshoumaru emphasized as he watched the two children stare at him curiously.
Rin knew that Lord Sesshoumaru and the other youkai in the castle sometimes conversed in their own language, but when they did so, it was usually something important that was not meant for the young girl to hear.
However, Shippo could understand them clearly, yet he was suspicious as to why the messenger was being so vague despite speaking in the youkai language.
“It is a matter of GREAT importance,” Katsutoshi growled impatiently.
It wasn’t normal for Katsutoshi or any member of the guard to disturb him while he was in his private bedchambers, so whatever it was must have been deemed important and required his immediate attention.
Reluctantly, Sesshoumaru released his hold on his sleeping mate, and rose gracefully from the futon.
“Rin, you and the kitsune may stay here to keep her company. When I return, you must go back to your afternoon lessons immediately, understood?” Sesshoumaru ordered stoically as he crossed the room to open the sliding door that led to the platform’s steps.
Rin’s heart skipped a beat in delight as she could barely contain the large smile that had spread across her face.
This was so exciting for the young orphaned girl.
Even though Kagome was sleeping, Rin would get to cuddle with her new mother just as other children did with theirs.
She finally had the chance to do something that normal families did.
“Yes, my Lord!” Rin whispered cheerfully as she and Shippo scrambled onto the soft bed with Kagome before Sesshoumaru slid the door closed behind him.
Swiftly, Sesshoumaru crossed the larger part of the bedroom before he angrily pulled the door open; golden colored eyes clashed with piercing silver as Sesshoumaru glared at the dark haired inuyoukai as while he closed the door behind him.
“If this isn’t as significant as you claimed it is, I will kill you, regardless of the fact that you are my kin,” Sesshoumaru stated icily as he glared at Katsutoshi in contempt.
Instantly, Katsutoshi pulled out one of his elegantly curved swords.
Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes in agitation before he realized that the Captain was presenting his sword to him for inspection.
Other than a few light scratches on the blade, it was completely spotless; however the blade did reek of a familiar scent of human blood.
“The male is dead,” Katsutoshi said tersely.
Sesshoumaru raised a delicate eyebrow.
He could care less that the monk was dead, but then again, his mate would be upset if she ever found out.
Was Katsutoshi so incapable of carrying out orders that he needed Sesshoumaru to monitor his every move?
Useless.
“By your hand, I presume?” Sesshoumaru asked detachedly as he began to reach for the hilt of Tenseiga.
It was evident that Katsutoshi was behind the monk’s death, but the inuyoukai Captain wouldn’t kill unless he was provoked.
Sometimes, Katsutoshi was more hot-headed than Inuyasha and it often made Sesshoumaru feel fortunate that the trait somehow skipped him, but furious that their actions often affected him.
Katsutoshi placed his sword back in its sheath as he nodded; knowing full well that he was in deeper trouble for killing the monk than what Sesshoumaru’s outward emotions displayed.
Sesshoumaru drew the Tenseiga and proceeded to silently walk the corridor, however before the irritated Taiyoukai could leave, Katsutoshi’s voice stopped him.
“Also…there’s the matter of Masanori, my Lord. I have just received more information from one of our spies, which is another reason why I haven’t left the castle yet,” The Captain explained in a quiet, yet urgent manner.
Sesshoumaru didn’t bother to turn around as he narrowed his eyes at the mention of that name.
Even though they were safe within the walls of the Western Land’s castle, there was always a chance that Masanori had his own spies lingering about.
It wouldn’t be one of Sesshoumaru’s own servants; they were too loyal and too scared to betray him, not to mention they couldn’t leave the castle or the barrier that surrounded it.
However, a small animal, an insect or even a bird could simply be manipulated to be used as an infiltrator, since insignificant creatures like that weren’t affected by the castle’s barrier.
Two could play at that game, but it seemed that Masanori was just now catching up to him.
Still, anything that involved Masanori was never good and the fact that his name was even mentioned in Sesshoumaru’s presence increased the Taiyoukai’s urge to bury his razor sharp, poisonous claws into Masanori’s flesh before painfully ripping every single limb from his body.
Inwardly, Sesshoumaru growled furiously.
Although his plans had initiated sooner than expected, it was still too soon to start his plans with anything that dealt with Masanori, despite him being one of his top priorities.
Unfortunately, Sesshoumaru still needed him to carry out part of his plan and as much as Sesshoumaru wanted to, he couldn’t eliminate him…yet.
“We will discuss this in the library. This is not the place to speak of such things,” Sesshoumaru said curtly as he led them down the vast corridors to his private study.
He would deal with the matter of the dead monk later; however, there was a much more pressing issue that was currently at hand.
Masanori… Sesshoumaru thought darkly as his razor sharp claws dug into the palm of his closed hand.
~*~*~
For once in his life, Inuyasha felt true fear.
It sent an icy, cold chill down his spine, making the hairs on the back of his neck stand as he could feel the goose bumps on his skin rise.
Despite the summer sun glaring down on him, Inuyasha felt very cold and very terrified as he repeated the same, daunting question he had asked himself so many times before.
What the hell is going on around here?
Miroku, Sango, Shippo, and even Kirara were now missing along with Kagome.
Whatever happened to them, caught them all off guard and it scared the hell out of Inuyasha so much that he refused to let his guard down for even a split second, even though he desperately needed sleep.
Their scents were gone.
The rain seemed to have washed away any small traces of them; even Koga, now reunited with Ginta and Hakaku, couldn’t pick it up with their keener sense of smell.
Someone was after them, and for once Inuyasha wasn’t sure that it was Naraku behind it this time.
Somehow, no matter what way or how well planned out Naraku seemed to carry out his plots, it was done in a manner that was undoubtedly Naraku’s handiwork; his signature.
However this time, whoever it was behind this latest plot was very precise about picking them off, one by one.
Yet, that was what scared Inuyasha the most; the precision behind the executed plot.
What if this was what the person wanted?
What if they wanted Inuyasha to be so paranoid that he would deprive himself from sleep; ultimately weakening him so that they could get him too?
Kagome was the first to go missing and she was the most exhausted member at the time, before her disappearance.
Then the others went missing as well; most likely exhausted from the shard hunt and from relentlessly searching for Kagome.
The only other common factor that likely led to their disappearance was that they were without Inuyasha’s protection, because he was so sure that they would all be fine on their own for a brief period of time.
Someone waited until he had let his guard down to strike and it wouldn’t be long before they struck again.
What more could the person possibly want?
They had some of the jewel shards in their possession, because Kagome had them with her at the time.
If anything, this person would go after Naraku, since he had the vast majority of the jewel.
However, because of the fact that the person now possessed his group’s share of the shards…what did they plan on doing with the kidnapped?
Or did they already do something to them? Inuyasha grimaced.
Their significant absence and that lingering question haunted the inu hanyou as tried to push away the horrible thought that constantly rose in his mind.
Still, that same horrible thought was what kept Inuyasha going.
If they were all dead, then he would carry out his vengeance on the bastard that did this for his dear friends.
With a renewed sense of determination, Inuyasha shook his head to clear away his thoughts and focused back on the people around him.
“C’mon, we won’t find nothin’ here. We gotta track down Kagura before we completely lose her,” Inuyasha said.
~*~*~
Katsutoshi released a huge sigh as he continued to fly inconspicuously on his cloud over the vast forest that consumed most of the Western Lands.
The last couple of days were very tiring, even for him, but it was all for a much greater goal.
Everything Sesshoumaru did was for a greater purpose, even though most didn’t understand nor question his actions.
But Katsutoshi knew.
Sesshoumaru had always been that way, even when they were small children.
His studies, his training…everything had a larger purpose and now that purpose was going to be realized very soon.
The moment Sesshoumaru took an interest in the miko and had started his research about her kind in his private study, Katsutoshi knew that Kagome was going to be the one of the major keys to accomplishing Sesshoumaru’s goal.
The unbroken silence between them in the private study that day, spoke volumes; the silent understanding between them was as clear as the pure waters of Mount Fuji…
…She would be the one that they would both dedicate their whole lives to.
Roughly, Katsutoshi hopped off of his cloud and onto the dirt road before his cloud could even fully descend.
Orange, red and yellow hues lit up the sky as Katsutoshi had landed in the busy red light district of a youkai dominated village.
The village was littered with closely built houses and businesses that had their inhabitants coming out to light the red lanterns outside of their doors, while the streets were filled with various youkai donned in their best kimono, looking to spend their money for a good time.
“Welcome back, Master,” A beautiful young woman said seductively as she leaned against the wall next to a door that belong to the largest house in the district.
Her long, dark hair was done in a half-updo, with a simple bun on top of her head; adorned with a single gold ornament placed on the front of the bun.
She wore a beautiful silk, vibrant colored kimono that hung precariously from her shoulders, exposing the tops of her ample breasts as the rest of the fabric clung sensuously on her nicely shaped curves.
Her bottle-green catlike eyes were illuminated by the glowing red lantern that she stood under and they sparkled playfully at Katsutoshi before she closed them; taking a delicate sip of sakè from the small, flat clay cup in her tiny, clawed hand.
“Fumiko,” Katsutoshi greeted plainly as he strolled pass the neko youkai to head inside of the large house.
Just as reached the door, he paused for a moment, suspicious of the way she had greeted him, before he turned to look back at the neko demon named, Fumiko.
He narrowed his eyes suspiciously at the calm neko youkai next to him.
“You’re awfully quiet this evening,” Katsutoshi stated as he eyed the beautiful woman distrustfully.
Fumiko opened her bright green eyes and gave a sideway glance at her Master.
“Oh?” She smirked, before she closed her eyes again to take a sip of the sakè.
After a brief moment of silence that was filled with the sounds of the bustling village and the evening cicadas, the inuyoukai Captain decided to give in.
“What did you do, this time?” Katsutoshi sighed irritably.
“Hmm?” Fumiko inquired innocently as she paused with the edge of the cup against her red painted lips, before she took another ladylike sip.
“Which customer was it?” Katsutoshi clarified before Fumiko gave a light, airy laugh.
“Sorry Master, but I’ve been a good girl all week,” Fumiko smiled; showing off her small, pointy, white fangs.
Katsutoshi inwardly released a sigh of relief.
Fumiko was always a troublemaker, even when it came to entertaining her clients and it was always Katsutoshi who had to pay out of his pocket for the damages the beautiful cat demon caused.
The only reason he had kept her around was because she still earned a decent amount of money for his brothel, despite her short temper and mischievous ways.
Cats…
“By all means, carry on,” Katsutoshi dismissed, before he slid open the door to the large house.
However, he stopped himself from entering once again as Fumiko’s words reached his ears.
“Oh, by the way…I saw your new present. It’s a little damaged, don’t you think?” Fumiko purred with another smirk.
~*~*~
Evening fell across the lands once again, enveloping the cloudless skies in brilliant shades of navy blue, as it sparkled with dazzling, glittering stars; the nearly full moon shone brightly off in the distance.
Sesshoumaru held Kagome in his pair of strong arms as he watched Atsuko place a cool, damp towel onto his mate’s forehead.
By human standards, today was a very hot, summer day and even now, in the middle of the evening, it had yet to cool down outside.
The weather hardly affected youkai, as their bodies quickly adapted to changes in the climate, however humans took a little more time to adapt.
It was a small detail that Sesshoumaru had forgotten, but was quickly reminded of when he had returned back to his private chambers and found Kagome covered in a thin sheen of sweat.
Immediately, Sesshoumaru summoned Atsuko before he carried Kagome away into the bathing room for a quick, cooling bath.
As he gently bathed Kagome in the unheated waters of their hot spring, Atsuko and Sachiko came in to change the silk bedcovers of their futon.
When he had returned and placed Kagome back on their bed, the mother-daughter pair came in with his mate’s dinner, as well as a few medical supplies and a small bucket of cool water.
Although Kagome was unconscious, it didn’t mean she couldn’t eat.
She had been travelling with the hanyou, who had often forgotten the basic necessities of a human, despite being a half-human himself; humans regularly required food, water and most importantly, sleep.
Even the most human-despising Taiyoukai around knew that much about humans.
At this point, their pups were far healthier than that of their tiny, fragile mother.
As sat down gracefully on the futon and gently pulled Kagome’s body onto his lap with her head resting peacefully against his hard, muscled chest, Sesshoumaru inwardly smirked at the first memory he had of actually holding Kagome.
Kagome was just as helpless as she was now; unconscious from an attack by one of Masanori’s men, but instead of being too warm as she was now, she was shivering from the cold of the snow storm that raged heavily outside of the small cave that they took shelter in.
Sesshoumaru held her tiny body against his to keep her warm all night and after that night, he decided that he wouldn’t fight his feelings for the miko any longer.
Even later that morning, the Taiyoukai was very reluctant to return Kagome back to his disgraceful, worthless hanyou half-brother.
She needed him as much as he needed her and he silently vowed to protect her from harm from that day on; devoting the next few months of protecting her amongst the shadows whenever she travelled alone.
He had originally wanted her to be simply in his company, he even considered keeping her as one of his concubines; however, when he had later found out about her true capabilities…Sesshoumaru knew that they could finally be together, despite her being a human.
Kagome was going to become a very important key to accomplishing his goal, but she became so much more than a tool for him to simply use.
Sesshoumaru had grown attached to the fragile, clumsy, yet very intelligent and impeccably beautiful being that was Kagome.
Even now as he held her, the Taiyoukai couldn’t possibly imagine a life without her in it.
Once Atsuko gave Kagome a vial of medicine to help ease her pain and rest peacefully, she sent Sachiko back to the infirmary with the medical supplies and asked the young youkai to bring back more small towels so that the one on Kagome’s head could be changed as often as it was needed.
Without a second’s hesitation, Sachiko grabbed the supplies and left the chambers quickly to carry out her assignment.
The older hawk youkai was still very concerned about her Lady’s condition, even though the young miko seemed to be healing quite well, she was still very frail and even the slightest illness could easily make their Lady’s condition worse.
When Sachiko left the room, Atsuko turned her attention back to the tray of food she had brought for her Lady.
It was a very simple meal consisting of just warm broth.
Kagome needed to eat, but was unable to do so as she rested, so the only reasonable meal she could actually eat while unconscious was broth.
It wasn’t much, but it was a lot better than letting her starve.
As Atsuko reached for the clay bowl, Sesshoumaru moved silently to better adjust Kagome’s position; leaning her small body back against his hard, broad chest, so that she may swallow the broth comfortably.
Very gently and quietly, Atsuko fed the clear soup to the sleeping miko as her Lord carefully tilted back the younger girl’s head for better access.
Neither one of the youkai said a word to each other as they focus on taking care of the unconscious miko below them.
Atsuko was very grateful that she was alive, but was very cautious of her words and actions now, as she did not want to upset her Lord again.
Sesshoumaru simply focused on his mate’s beautifully, soft features and the tranquil auras of his two pups that were currently sleeping, undisturbed, in their mother’s womb.
As Atsuko began to give the last of the soup to her Lady, Kagome’s eyebrows started to knit together in confusion as the warm, clay bowl touched her lips, before she groaned sleepily.
Atsuko pulled away and set the bowl of soup down as Kagome unexpectedly began to stir from her slumber.
Naoki did mention to them that she had lessen the amount of pain medicine for their Lady, since she seemed to be healing fine on her own with help of her miko powers, but it still didn’t explain why the young miko was awakening now.
Instantly, Atsuko’s alarmed light brown eyes met with her Lord’s concerned amber gaze as the young miko stirred in his powerful arms.
Slowly Kagome’s eyes started to open; the pair of stormy blue orbs tinted with a hint of glowing red stared up at the people around her as her blurry vision began to focus in the dim, lantern lit room.
Immediately, her blue gaze connected with the figure above her.
“…I-Inuyasha?”
