Kagome nearly whimpered as she woke and tried to swallow. She opened her eyes and grabbed the two small pills on her bedside table. She gathered her courage as she sat up and took the glass of water in her hand. This was going to hurt. With a deep breath she put the pain reliever into her mouth and swallowed before she could think about it too much.
She closed her eyes and breathed through the pain, waiting for the medicine to kick in. She knew that her first order of business today was going to be to call Miroku and get him to come over and see what he could do about her throat. She could also ask him about what she had planned to ask yesterday before she had gone to the hospital.
After about fifteen minutes the pain was at a manageable level and she reached for the phone on her bedside table. Miroku answered on the third ring, but he seemed distracted and she wondered what was going on.
“Miroku,” she said her voice a croak that she didn’t recognize.
“Who is this?” he asked.
“It’s Kagome and I need you to come over,” she told him.
“I have the Police on the other line wanting to speak to you about an incident that happened last night at the University Hospital,” he told her. “Would this be related to why you sound so terrible?”
“Yes,” she managed as she closed her eyes and fought off the urge to cry. “Tell them to come to the shrine and I’ll speak to them.”
“Very well, I will be there soon,” he told her. “Though I will be expecting to hear why you didn’t call me last night.”
She hung up the phone and got out of bed. She didn’t really want to, but she wasn’t talking to the police in her pajamas without having taken a shower. Her shower was quicker than it would have been under normal circumstances, both because the police were coming over and because the pain in her neck was just enough to keep her from really enjoying it.
After a moment’s thought she decided that it would probably be for the best to wear her robes. She dressed quickly and headed downstairs to wait. She would worry about getting something to eat after the interview and after Miroku had healed her throat. She did however put some water on to make tea with. She had just enough time for it to boil before someone knocked. She set everything on a tray and brought it out to the living room before opening the door.
“Higurashi-sama, I am Detective Ito and this is my partner Detective Yamada, may we come in?” the older of the two officers asked.
She offered a polite bow and stepped back to allow them to enter. “Of course.”
Once they had removed their shoes she led them to the living room. She took a seat on one end of the sofa. Detective Ito sat at the other end and his partner sat in the old recliner that had belonged to her grandfather. She offered them some tea, but they both declined politely.
“Higurashi-sama, this is really just a formality,” Ito said. “I have spoken with the Inu no Taishou as well as Inoue-sama and they informed us what occurred, but for the record I need your version of events.”
Kagome nodded. “I went to the hospital to see if I could aid the victim of a rather brutal assault.” She took a sip of tea to soothe her throat. “When I finished I worked my way through the critical care ward, helping where I could, and as I was leaving I accidentally bumped into a man. I tried to apologize, but he cursed at me and backed me up into the wall when I tried to leave. He thinks youkai and humans with spiritual powers should just kill each other off and he planned to start with me. He gripped my throat and squeezed. I tried to free myself, but was unable. Thankfully Inoue-sama showed up and saved me. He pulled the man off me and tossed him away and then saw me safely home.”
“I see,” the detected said, making notes in the small notepad he held in his hands. “A lucky coincidence then, that Inoue-sama showed up at the hospital when he did.”
She took a few more sips of her tea. “Not really, since Inoue-sama is the one who captured the youkai who assaulted the young woman I went to see, and it was he who told me about her condition. We are working together on a project that we hope will ensure the lasting peace between our two peoples, and he was concerned that I would tire myself and be unable to continue our work. He was also concerned about the young woman and wanted to know how she was fairing.”
“Do you generally have so much contact with youkai?” Detective Yamada asked.
“Only recently,” she replied. “I am sure you are aware of the recent truce the Inu no Taishou and I declared. We are both very dedicated to finding a way to bring about a lasting peace and to do that we must work together.”
Kagome and the men looked towards the door as someone knocked. “Excuse me, that is probably my friend the Monk Miroku. He was coming by to heal my injuries.”
She went to the door and let Miroku in. He frowned at the dark ring around her neck, but said nothing as she led him back to the living room. He stood behind her as she returned to her place on the sofa. She hoped they would be finished soon. The pain relievers were not doing the job anymore.
“Just one more question Higurashi-sama and then we will photograph your injury and be on our way,” Detective Ito told her. “Do you have any reason to suspect that this might have been a set up either by the Inu no Taishou or Inoue-sama?”
“I don’t know what you mean,” Kagome replied. “Do you mean as an assassination attempt, but then why would have Inoue-sama come at all and saved me?”
“Perhaps Inoue-sama saved you against the Inu no Taishou’s wishes, or perhaps it was set up as a way to gain your trust,” Detective Ito explained. “Maybe they put your life in danger to save it so that you would feel like you owed them a debt.”
Kagome would have laughed if it wouldn’t have hurt too much to do so. “That’s ridiculous. First of all the Inu no Taishou and Inoue-sama already have my trust. Neither of them would do something so dishonorable. If the Inu no Taishou wished me dead then I would know it. He wouldn’t assassinate me. He would face me in open combat. Second, I may owe Inoue-sama a debt for saving me, but that is not something either of them would exploit, not when so much is at stake in regards to ending the war between our two peoples.”
“Very well, thank you, Higurashi-sama,” the detective said as he came to his feet. “Detective Yamada will take a few photographs now.”
Kagome lifted her head to allow then to get the pictures they needed and then Miroku showed them out. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes. The next thing she felt was warmth and light of Miroku’s power as he did what he could to heal her and soon her pain was gone. She lifted her head and looked at him as he sat down beside her. She could tell that he was waiting for her to explain to him what had happened so she launched into the story for the second time this morning.
“You should have called me,” he said with a frown, once she had finished. “Are you so certain that the police were not on the right track? The hanyou seems to have very convenient timing.”
Kagome rolled her eyes. “Trust me, Miroku, I am more worried about being stabbed in the back from someone on our side than I am about being betrayed by InuYasha.”
“InuYasha? Are you so familiar with the hanyou now?” Miroku questioned.
Kagome felt her face heat. “He doesn’t like to be addressed formally. I am respecting his wishes and you should try to have a little more faith, if not in him and his brother then in me.”
Now it was his turn to sigh. Of course he had faith in her, but it wasn’t as easy when it came to dealing with youkai, and often he wondered how she managed to be so open minded concerning them when she had grown up being taught the exact same lessons as he had. “I will try.”
She smiled at him briefly before her look turned serious. “I need you to be my eyes and ears. I need to know who I really have to worry about and if there are any others you suspect of having been working with Tsubaki or working for whoever she was. I am going to ask InuYasha if they have any other spies as well.”
“Do you think he will tell you?” Miroku asked.
“I don’t know, but I don’t think he’ll lie,” she replied. “He might be willing to tell me that they have spies, but not who they are. The worst he can do is refuse to answer, but that is why I need you to find out whatever you can.”
“I will do as you ask,” he told her.
“Thank you,” she said with a smile. “Now, I have to go call and see when InuYasha is available to get back to work on the scrolls.”
Miroku left and she went to the kitchen and made herself some breakfast, before heading to her office to call InuYasha. She didn’t know why she was always so nervous just to pick up the phone and call him. Maybe it was because in her heart sleeping with him felt less like a mistake and more like fate. She knew it was stupid let herself think that way, but she couldn’t help it. Since the first moment she had laid eyes on him she had felt something, a connection, and it had only grown stronger over time.
Being with him defied all logic, all reason, but the thought of not being with him made something inside her ache almost unbearably. It didn’t make sense, and she knew it was dangerous and stupid and that she was setting herself up for a fall, but maybe the alternative was worse.
She picked up the phone and dialed.
“Yo,” he answered.
“InuYasha, it’s Kagome,” she said. “I was just calling to see when you might be able to come over to work on the scrolls, and there is also something I need to ask you that would probably be best done in person.”
“You up for working this afternoon?” he asked. “I can probably be there around two if that works.”
“That would be great,” she told him. “Miroku came by so my throat is all but completely healed.”
“Then I’ll see you at two,” he said.
She hung up the phone with a smile, her body already humming with anticipation. She wondered if he felt even a little of what she did when it came to them seeing each other. She also wondered how they were ever going to get any work done if he did.
InuYasha arrived at the shrine about fifteen minutes late and not for the first time cursed his brother and his damn protocol. He didn’t understand why he couldn’t have taken his report over the phone or waited until tonight to hear that he hadn’t found any trace of Tsubaki at the location they had been tipped off to. He had checked every inch of that place and hadn’t picked up a single trace.Kagome opened the back door and waved to him. He growled at himself as his cock hardened at the sight of her once again in jeans. The short sleeved pink sweater she wore wasn’t revealing but he still admired the way it fit the curves of her body. He shook his head as he walked towards the house. He was here to work, not to jump her as soon as she was in arm’s reach.
“Sorry, I’m late,” he said as he stepped inside past her. “My bastard brother pulled me in to give him a report even though I told him I had found fuck all.”
She shook her head. “It’s okay. I just was just finishing up a call when I felt you arrive anyway.”
“So what did you need to ask me?” he questioned. “Was it the same thing you mentioned on the phone yesterday?”
She nodded and took a seat at the kitchen table. There was something about her manner that concerned him and he got the sense that she was nervous about whatever it was she wanted to talk about. He refused to let himself think about what he would do if it turned out that she was about to tell him that they couldn’t be together again. Just the thought had his youkai on edge and he also refused to think about what that might mean, because there was no way this thing between them could ever be more than it was right now, even if she was the most incredible woman he had ever met.
He sat down across from her. “So, what is it?”
“I’ll understand if you can’t answer me,” she told him. “All I ask is that you don’t lie.”
His brow furrowed. Well at least it didn’t seem like she was planning on telling him they had to stop fucking. “I haven’t lied to you yet.”
“I know,” she told him. “I didn’t mean that to sound like an accusation. It’s just I know you might not be able to tell me what I want to know and I didn’t want to put you in a difficult position, one where you might feel like your only option was to lie.”
“Keh, go ahead and ask then,” he said.
She nodded. “Do you have other spies among my people?”
He let out a long breath. He definitely understood why she had tried to prepare him and why she was so hesitant to ask. This wasn’t a decision he could make on his own. “Shit, okay, you were right to set that up like you did. I can’t answer you without calling Sesshomaru first. I’ll ask him and find out what I can tell you, but it’ll have to wait. He’s going to be unreachable this afternoon, except for emergencies.”
“I understand,” she told him. “Should we go upstairs and get to work then?”
He pushed away from the table and stood. “Lead the way.”
InuYasha couldn’t take his eyes off her perfect ass as she climbed the stairs in front of him. He remembered the way she looked on her knees in front of him and his youki surged forward. He grabbed her wound the waist and pulled her back against him. She shivered as he brushed his lips against the back of her neck.
“I want you,” he breathed as he cupped her breast with one hand, the other arm pulling her hard against his aching cock.
She whimpered and covered his hand with her own. “I want you too, but we really should get some work done first.”
He growled, knowing that she was right. He couldn’t keep coming over here and not having anything new to report to Sesshomaru. With a great effort of will he released her. “Shit, I know you’re right. Let’s get this done so we can both get what we want.”
She took a steadying breath and then nodded. The scroll from before was still there waiting for her to get it photographed and up loaded. She turned to him as he leaned casually against the wall. She could literally feel his desire for her in his youki.
“Two short ones or one long one, every time and then after we’ll take advantage of whatever time we have left,” she said.
He nodded and when he spoke his voice was low and rough. “Then let’s stop wasting time.”
Once she was satisfied with the scans and the light level she began to transcribe the scroll. InuYasha came up behind her and she tried not to notice how much she enjoyed feeling him so near. He reached around her and pointed out a small mistake. She corrected it with thanks and then began the process of translating any more archaic characters into more familiar ones. It was shorter scroll and she knew almost immediately that it wasn’t what they were looking for but it was still best to finish working on it before moving on.
“Okay, it’s done,” she said. “It’s a spell and an herbal mixture to cure impotence it would seem.”
He snorted. “Guess men haven’t changed much in the last five hundred years.”
She giggled a little and then rolled up the scroll, placing in the sir tight container where she planned to store them all once they were complete. She went to the chest and selected another, hoping it would be short. She got it all set up and went to sit down, only to find herself in InuYasha’s lap. Somehow he had slipped behind her. She squirmed and he groaned, grabbing her hips.
“You keep that up and we won’t get another one done,” he said, his breath hot against her ear. “Now, get to work.”
She forced herself to concentrate. He wasn’t doing anything but holding her, his hands innocently placed on her hips and yet it was still almost more than she could overcome. She took a calming breath and set about transcribing and translating the scroll. She shuddered as his hand slid up her arm.
“That last one is wrong,” he said quietly. “You having trouble concentrating, miko-sama?”
She took a shaky breath. “You’re a real jerk. You know that, right?”
He chuckled. “I get that a lot, but the person saying it isn’t usually so wet that I can feel it through her pants and mine. Hurry up Ka-go-me. I won’t let you make a mistake.”
She felt her face heat, but went back to work. It wasn’t another spell or herbal remedy and it wasn’t about the war, but it was interesting none the less. She double checked her work one last time. “This was written by Kikyou.”
Several days ago a large contingent of taijiya arrived. It seems word of my great power reached them and they bade me go with them. They had rediscovered a sacred artifact of great power they called the Shikon no Tama, born of the legendary priestess Midoriko. It was their wish that I help them retrieve it and take it with me so that I might protect it from any who might try to use corrupt its power and use it for evil.
I did not desire to take on yet another burden, another duty, but knew that I had no choice. It was almost as if Midoriko herself were speaking to me. I pray each day that I might find a way to purify the jewel completely so that I will not have to pass on such a heavy burden to Kaede who already carries the burden of my power as well as knowledge of my shame.
“It must have been so hard for her,” Kagome said quietly. “I’m over 50 years old and I had Mama for most of those years and I still get overwhelmed sometimes. She was so young and didn’t have anyone. Then on top of that she had to take care of the daughter she had to lie about after being raped. I can’t even imagine how she kept it together.”
“Guess you miko are made of some pretty strong stuff,” he told her as he held her just a little more tightly.
She let herself relax against him. He slipped his hands up under her sweater and she leaned forwards just enough to let him pull it off over her head. She gasped as he nipped at her back and shoulders. She pulled away from him and stood up reaching behind her to unhook her bra. The heat of his gaze spread through her as she slipped off her jeans and panties at the same time.
She watched as he tugged off his shirt and threw it on the floor. She bent down in front of him and unfastened his pants. He stood up just enough to allow her to get them off of him. Their eyes met as she leaned forward and pulled him into her mouth. He groaned, running his fingers through her hair.
InuYasha couldn’t take his eyes off of her as she sucked him hard and deep. He could feel himself slipping all the way back into her throat and then out again and it felt fucking amazing, but it wasn’t nearly enough. He grabbed her and pulled her up into his lap.
“Is something wrong?” she asked.
“Fuck no,” he replied as he wrapped his arms around her. “I’m just dying to be inside you already.”
She nibbled her lower lip and then smiled. She reached down between them and took his cock in her hand. He rested his hands on her hips as she lifted herself up and then lowered herself onto his lap. His head fell back and he groaned out her name as she rolled her hips.
Kagome breathed out his name as he nipped at her neck, his hands roaming her back, pulling her closer, urging her to move faster, harder against him. She cried out as he captured one of her nipples between his teeth and bit down gently. His claws felt wonderful against her skin and each prick of his fangs sent heat coursing through her body like wildfire. She rocked her hips, trying to pull him in deeper, to claim him body and soul.
“You’re so fucking beautiful,” he said as he tangled his hand in her hair.
He crushed his mouth against hers and kissed her hard. She was absolutely incredible. He didn’t think he would ever be able to get enough of her or of the way they fitted together. He squeezed her ass with both hands helping her move against him. She was so tight and hot and wet and already he was on the brink.
He pressed his lips against her ear. “Come for me, Kagome. I want to feel you.”
Her back arched and her nails bit into his shoulders as she tightened around him. He could feel her trembling against him as he pulled her down hard into his lap and exploded inside her, her name on his lips. He held her close as she rested her head on his shoulder while they both tried to catch their breath.
“Mmm, I needed that,” she said as she placed feather-light kisses against his neck.
“You weren’t the only one,” he told her turning his head so that he could claim her lips with his.
She nearly jumped out of his lap as his phone rang at their feet. He laughed and wrapped his arms around her to keep her from falling as he leaned down to snag his pants. He sat back up and pulled his phone out of his pocket.
He scowled at the number on the screen, but answered. “I’m not even late yet.”
Kagome knew it had to be his brother and could hear a masculine voice on the other end. She wondered if she should get out of his lap, but he kept one arm hooked around her waist. Since he would probably tell her at least some of what his brother was saying she laid her head on his chest and waited, tracing patterns against his skin with her finger.
“Yeah, I got it,” he said. “We’re finishing up the second scroll and then I’ll be on my way. Give me about half an hour.” He hung up. “Shit, I wish I could stay, but Sesshomaru needs me to come in and act a witness to something.”
“I understand,” she assured him. “I have to teach classes all day tomorrow, but the day after I don’t have anything, so if that works for you call me tomorrow night and let me know what time you’ll be here.”
“Sounds good,” he told her. “Now come take a shower with me so I can fuck you one more time before I have to wash the scent of you off me and head home.”
“How’s a girl to resist such a romantic offer,” she said with a laugh as she moved out of his lap and onto her feet. “Well, come on, then. We don’t have much time.”
He snorted, but came to his feet and followed her down the hall. She was a hell of a woman. He would definitely give her that.
