“No you listen to me Sesshomaru, the last time you had deigned enough interested to teach me combat we both realized the futility of that endeavour. I have the grace of a four day old kitten and about the same resilience, hence why I stay further back with my bow.”
“And you listen to me, eventually that bow will not be helpful and you will need to know how to defend yourself. Give yourself at list half credit little miko, you are capable, and you can learn.” The baritone voice of an irritated inu rumbled back, his arms crossed as his golden eyes bored into the cerulean ones of the onna before him. Stubborn girl, didn’t she understand that she might one day need his tutelage? He could remember her aforementioned gracelessness in an era long past, however with her current status she at least had a modicum of control over her limbs.
“Fine, you know what? If it gets you to shut up about it I’ll do lessons with you, however I fully expect you to give up shortly when you realize I’m just as klutzy as I used to be” Kagome huffed irritatedly. Couldn’t this walking wall understand that she had tried to learn, that all the tutelage of Inuyasha and Sesshomaru had done nothing to fix her two left feet? Shaking her head, she hitched her pack higher up onto her back and peered through the trees into the village of Itate, her eyes scanning for hanyous. For two weeks that had avoided civilization, sticking to the wilds of Japan rather than the most direct route.
Kagome sighed as she slowly sent out tendrils of reiki, finding only a handful of auras in the area, none of which pulsed with the mark of a hanyou. Frowning a bit, she found herself chewing her bottom lip in thought, the argument between her and Sesshomaru pushed to the back burner of her brain. Since the hot spring, the two of them had once more fallen into quiet companionship. Each night she would help comb his hair, and each night he would return the favor. The silence hadn’t even been broken until two days into the journey, with an offhand remark that lead to series of stories from her time in the feudal era. However now she stood debating on entering the village, her pack getting light with the lack of supplies she was able to find.
“Interesting,” the smooth voice of Sesshomaru interrupted her thoughts, his own eyes scanning the small village before them as he echoed her own thoughts.
“I need supplies” she muttered softly, looking at the white haired Inu, when he failed to respond, she quickly added “though I am not sure if we should enter the village, on the account of you being, well…”
“Not human” he finished for her, his own thoughts as troubled as hers. While she was correct in that her foodstuffs were getting low, and this town could have everything they needed, with it only having human inhabitants meant that potentially the both of them would be in danger if anyone found out his heritage. With a sigh, he stepped back from the treeline and began shedding his armor, hiding it within the low shrubbery.
“What are you doing Sesshomaru?” Kagome hissed, watching as he closed his eyes.
“Preparing to enter the village” he replied, his tone speaking as if it were the obvious reaction. Pulling his long silver hair into a tie at the nape of his neck, his youki pulsed around him as he focused his energies. Kagome watched as slowly the silver turned to black, the stripes and crescent moon on his forehead disappearing, his once golden eyes opening to gaze at her, now dark brown. Raising an eyebrow, she all but laughed as she looked at the now human looking Sesshomaru.
“Since when did you know that trick?” Her muttered words reached his now rounded ears, his lips twitching into an almost half smirk.
“Come now Miko, surely even you must know that always appearing as myself would lead to more questions than answers.”
“Could have fooled me” she groused, hitching the pack again on her back “are you ready to go? Because the faster this is over with, the faster we can get a move on.” At his nod she began to head towards the village, her eyes scanning the buildings for any signs of movement. Kagome had no idea why she was so on edge, though she theorized that her lack of human contact had left the idea of being surrounded by people an uncomfortable one. The thought was discerning, but ruthlessly shoved into the back of her head, the forethoughts now taking over as she noticed the condition of the village. High barricades were built between the buildings, the road leading into the village blocked off with what looked like a makeshift gate, and now that the two of them had left the treeline, she could hear the pounding footsteps of people running. ‘Great’ she thought to herself ‘now comes the fun part’. The two of them kept their pace steady however, Sesshomaru quiet by her side, however without even having to look she knew he had assessed their defenses, and how quickly they could make an escape if need be.
“Halt! Stop and name yourselves and what business you have here!” An authoritative male voice rang out over the wall, a head peering out over the top to gaze at her and Sesshomaru. Glancing at the inu, she was surprised to find his hands in the air and a neutral expression on his face. Adopting his stance, she gazed at him, wondering if he expected to speak or would leave that to her.
“My name is Sesshomaru Taisho, my companion is Kagome Higurachi, we are but travelers seeking supplies and perhaps shelter for the eve.” His voice was calm, his eyes and hands steady as he gazed back at the man on the barricade.
“Who the five hells is traveling now? Seems suspicious to me” he spat back, glaring at the two of them in turn.
“I have family in the north, Sesshomaru has graciously offered to travel with me while I make my way to see if they are alive” she called, surprised to find her own voice steady and the lie that fled so easily from her lips, “He speaks truth, we are in desperate need of supplies.”
“Miss, if you have family up north, I guarantee you they are dead” he shouted, his face relaxing only the tiniest of fractions.
“Then if they are dead, they deserve a proper burial, and closure” she spat back angrily, her ire building “if you do not have supplies to trade, then we will be but on our way.” His head vanished for a second, her eyebrows knitting together in frustration at his behaviour. A glance at Sesshomaru revealed a neutral face, though his eyes glanced at hers in what appeared to be an inquisitive glance. Kagome herself had no idea where the lie had spouted from, but something in her heart screamed not to give this man their real objective, should Sesshomaru’s identity come into question. In what seemed like an eternity later, though in all actuality was only a few minutes, the gate creaked open enough to allow the two of them through, two angry men with swords flanking the entrance.
“You have been granted one night to stay, supply and then move on, any funny business and you will be tossed out. If we so much as even suspect you of anything, you’re out.”
“What no threats upon our lives?” The jest that came from Sesshomaru surprised Kagome as much as it angered the villager, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as he puffed up his chest and marched to the larger Inu.
“There are very few humans left, Taisho, would be a shame to kill two just because one of you can’t learn to shut his mouth” he snapped, his eyes daring Sesshomaru to challenge him. Sesshomaru just shrugged however, a small smile gracing his features as he stared calmly back at the man.
“Seems fair, now, could you please guide us to a merchant or trader, so we can get out of your hair?” His voice held a note of amusement in it, and Kagome knew the exact reason why. Not many creatures could kill the aristocratic assassin, and the idea of this chubby, out of shape human thinking himself up to the task was an amusing thought at best, insulting at worst.
“Not so fast, both of you need to leave your weapons, we may be isolated but we aren’t stupid” the portly man said, gripping the sword at his side until his knuckles were white from the effort. Shrugging, Sesshomaru pulled the two swords off his hip, and proffed them to the man, looking at Kagome to do the same. Eyeing the demon lord, she followed his example, taking off her quiver and placing it and the bow into the other mans waiting hands.
“Be careful with that, I will know if it has been damaged” she snapped, her eyes glaring at the leader as he smirked hungrily at the two of them, turning on his heel and marching away. “Slimy toad” she muttered glaring at his backside as he marched away. Sesshomaru merely gave her a glance that stated play nice, clasping his hands behind his back as the other gaurd lead them to what appeared to be a converted house, showing them to the door.
“This is where you can re supply, once you are finished I will lead you to your quarters for the evening” he said softly, looking at each in turn. With a nod of her head, Kagome walked inside to what appeared to be a house sized store room, a single old woman sitting on an armchair near the entrance. The house itself was full of food, both perishable and non, as well as a few old looking katanas, some books, and first aid supplies. The random assortment left Kagome feeling in a bit better of a mood, and before she could even start browsing the supplies, the old woman spoke up from her chair.
“Either you’re new, or just passing through, what do you need children?” Her raspy voice left very little for argument, and kagome smiled remembering another old woman who brooked no nonsense.
“Passing through, we need food supplies if you have any to spare, though I am not sure what I could trade with you as I have only the supplies that are on my back” she replied, giving the older woman a small bow. The older woman sat and seemed to mull her answer over, her eyes looking over Kagome as if trying to see through her skin and into her soul.
“You seem like a smart girl, someone who knows when not is all as they seem. I will give you two days worth of dry supplies, on the condition that you will leave at first light, and keep yourselves to yourselves.”
“Oba San you have our word” came the reply of Sesshomaru, his eyes looking at the old woman as if deep in thought, “your sons made it very clear we were not welcome here for long.” A deep laugh followed his statement, giving Kagome time to glance at the inu. She was not sure what game he was playing, but if he got them caught she was going to kill him herself.
“Yes, my four sons can be, brash, if I am to be honest, but they do their best. Go on, get what you need, just tell me once you are done so I know.” With that statement she rocked back, closing her eyes in dismissal. Kagome made quick work of restocking, gathering ramen, some rice, and dried meat, though her eyes glanced longingly at the slightly wizened apples on the counter. Making her way back to the old woman, she let her know of what she had taken and made her exit. Sesshomaru matched her pace, taking a deep breath of the cool mountain air once they were outside. The guard that had escorted them the first time waiting for them on the street. With a nod of her head, he began walking once more to what looked to be a small inn near the center of the village, their footsteps the only sound in the cool air.
“How is it you have survived here so isolated from the world?” The deep voice of Sesshomaru broke the silence, his eyes surveying the nearly empty village.
“We hid, then we built. It has not been easy, but we have made due.” His short answer left many unanswered questions, however Kagome didn’t pressure the man for more information, something about him and his brother had made her skin crawl. “Your room is second floor, middle door, room number six. We have dinner in the common room at sundown, you are not permitted to explore. Once first light hits you are to leave immediately.”
Without another word, he turned and left in the same direction of his brother, presumably to join the others as well. With a shake of her head, Kagome entered the dirty in, bypassing the common room and heading straight for the stairs towards the back. Their room was small, but cozy, a single bed in the center that though dusty, neatly made. Once she had opened the window and shook the covers outside, Kagome sat on the edge of the bed deep in thought.
“Penny for your thoughts,” drawled Sesshomaru, who now lay on his side of the bed. Truth be told he was not looking forward to being so close to the onna, her scent had been making it harder for him to focus these last few days. She was a temptation he could not afford, and though his beast roared and fought against his iron control, Sesshomaru knew that his control was slipping. The urge to mate was strong, and if his nose did not betray him, he knew she would be in heat very soon, which would make his resistance all the more difficult.
“I am not sure, my instincts are telling me something is wrong with this place, something is wrong with those men, but I cannot place my finger on why. I’ve learned to trust my instincts, they have saved my life before, but now, now I am not sure.”
“Trust your instincts Miko, it would not surprise me if, at least one of them, intends to bed you tonight.”
“Tch, never going to happen” she muttered, a deep chuckle resonating from Sesshomaru.
“As much as I believe you, Kagome, you are outnumered four to one, and happen to have close combat experience. It would be wise if you were to stay close to me this eve, at least until we can leave the cesspool.” She nodded in response, looking out the window again to the mountains, the clear blue sky beginning to show signs of the sun setting.
“Sesshomaru-Sama?”
“Hn”
“What ever happened to the wolf clan?” Her question was innocent, though he knew that she hungered for knowledge of one specific member.
“The entire clan is gone, no living member lived past 50 years after your departure.” He stated it as fact, awaiting the whirlstorm of questions that he was sure to receive. Even after nearly a month, he sometimes found himself falling into old assumptions and habits, so when her single question made it past her lips he was left feeling surprised.
“How?” Kagome felt the bed shift as he sat up, her head turning to look as he gazed at her quietly.
“You will not like the answer little Miko” he rumbled, part of him regretting that he would have to tell her. He was not sure when he had grown a slight fondness for the little onna, whether it be when she took out her first hanyou, or when she showed an aptitude for caution opposite of her previous self, either way, that little spark of warmth was there.
“I would still like to know” she replied softly, turning to face him on the bed. There was not a lot of room on this bed, barely enough for the two of them, but the closeness seemed to be furthest from her mind.
“About 30 years after your disappearance, Kouga found that his clan was growing larger than his borders. Somewhere in that wolf’s mind thought that the best action was to sieze my lands, since the lord of the east had forged an alliance with him some centuries past. The two lords laid seige to my lands, and though they fought hard, and long, one does not attack my lands without retribution.”
The air was thick with smoke and blood, wounded and dead littered the once green clearing all around him. Sesshomaru felt nothing but disgust at the scene around him, his eyes taking in the loss on both sides, the little imp Jakken taking tally of those soldiers of his that he had lost. The rage that had earlier roared through him had subsided, leaving an ache for those he had lost in this wolf’s fruitless labors of conquest. Since the shards had been removed from Kouga’s legs, he had sought power elsewhere, and Sesshomaru’s people had paid the price. A small tap on his leg distracted him momentarily from his line of thought, Jakken holding out a scroll for him to read. The number of dead, and their names and ranks. Sesshomaru was no fool, and he realized that at the rate he was losing soldiers, he wouldn’t have a domain to call home much longer.
“Jakken, see to the arrangements for the dead, I need time to think” he muttered, cleaning his blade before sheathing it. Before he could make his exit, the little toad gently tapped to get his attention again.
“I’m sorry M’lord Sesshomaru, but Lord Raitingou is here, and he wishes to speak with you.” Much of Jakken had changed these last few years through battle, he was no longer the snivveling servant, but rather a messenger of death, the job had sobered him up greatly.
“Tell him I will see him in my tent,” sighed out Sessshomaru, shaking his head in exhaustion. He had no time for political maneuvers, though he could not afford a war on three fronts, as it was the war on two had cost him more than he thought he had to give. With a barely perceptible sigh, he turned and made his way to the encampment, figuring that he best get this over with as soon as possible.
“Sesshomaru Sama, it is good to see you alive and well” Lord Raitingou’s voice was soft, his sharp green eyes giving the younger Youkai a once over.
“Raitingou Sama, I neither have the time, or the resources for pleasantries, so either tell me what you want, or leave.” Sesshomaru’s patience was worn thin, very thin, and it reflected in his voice much akin to the whip from his fingertips.
“I can see that Sesshomaru, however I think I may have something you may desire. Come, sit and drink with me, we have much to discuss” the older youkai rebutted, seemingly unfazed by the harsh tone his younger comrade had used. With a sigh, Sesshomaru sent for tea, and sat down to make himself comfortable.
“Since we are avoiding the pleasentries, allow me to get right to the point. You need men. You need reinforcements, supplies, food, and to be blunt my lord, you need help. I have seen the toll of the dead, I have seen how the wolf mutt celebrates, I have seen the defeat in your people’s eyes, and I have come to help.” At this Sesshomaru leaned back, waiting until his servant had left after depositing the tea.
“And I am sure this comes out of the goodness of your heart Raitingou, what is it you want? I have told you once I have no desire to mate your daughter, and she has no desire of the same. Infatuated with that toy she calls her lover if I remember correctly.”
“Aye, infatuated she is, as disgraceful as it is. However I have a different solution, one that would benefit the both of us in the long term. I have my own problems in my own lands, my own, rebels as it were. My proposal is simple, deal with the wolf clan, take the lands to the north, and shove the undesirables from mine up and away from all. I do not have the resources to control the lands to the north, and if my sources are correct, neither do you.” Sesshomaru sat and thought carefully over the older youkai’s words, trying to find a hidden meaning that he knew was there.
“Who are your undesirables Lord Raitingou? Surely not rebel youkai,” he mused, his amber eyes gazing into Raitingou’s green ones. The old man wouldn’t give up information this willingly, so his situation must have been more dire than even he could handle. That begged the question of who would make this powerful youkai nervous.
“A band of monks and miko’s going by the name legacy of the Shikon, as if they knew anything about the Shikon Miko herself. They have declared freedom from my lands, and though normally I would not even bat an eye at such a preposterous notion, they seem to have gotten smart. They stay in groups, combine their abilities, destroy youkai so easily that I would fear for my own people.” Raitingou paused, as if gathering his breath, and his wits about him, his calwed fingers running through his hair. “They claim to want a land all their own, and if means giving them the far north, they are welcome to it, even if it means the wolves are moved out. I must protect my people, as you must protect yours Sesshomaru, this is the only way I can see that benefits the both of us.” Sesshomaru sat and thought carefully, mulling over the proposition that Raitingou had brought to him, the silence between them stretching uncomfortably.
“I accept your proposal Raitingou, we both have a need, we both need to fill that need. The only condition is that your men follow my orders, as this is my lands, and my people who are being hunted. After that, I’ll make sure to clear a path for your...rebels...through my lands to the north. Agreed?” Reaching out a clawed hand, Sesshomaru could see the relief clearly written on Raitingou’s face as he reached across and grabbed it. Something had the older youkai deeply pterbed, and though he was using him for his own means and had no love for the older youkai, it bothered him greatly to see him so afraid.
“Within six months we had pushed them back off my lands, and another two years had eradicated the wolf tribe completely.” Kagome sat in complete silence for a moment, staring out the window deep in thought as she processed Sesshomaru’s story. It had pained her deep into her heart to hear of an old friends death, but part of her knew that Kouga was always ambitious, always ready to pick a fight, always ready to put passion into everything; Inuyasha and he had fought on countless occasions because of it. Taking a moment of quiet thought, Kagome sent up a prayer to the forgotten friend, hoping that somehow he would hear her sadness at his departure, and a sadness as to what he had become.
“Kouga had always been ambitious, and though his passion had meant many great things for his tribe, this was not one of them.” Sesshomaru reached across and gently patted her shoulder with his hand, a knowing nod as he comforted the miko as best as he could. She had grown up, more so than he would have anticipated, and she had lost that youthful naivety that had perpetually irked him in the past.
“It is almost time for supper, shall we put our best foot forward and give the wretches a meal?” Sesshomaru surprised even himself, rarely did he joke, and even more so when it was for comfort. However the words slid easily from his lips, and before his brain could reach out and stop them she had turned her eyes to him in a modicum of surprise, a slight smile on her face.
“Thank you Sesshomaru, lets deal with the...boys...as it were.” The two stood together, each gathering themselves before facing the door. These four walls had provided a sanctuary they did not even know they needed, and both were loathe to leave it. With a resigned sigh, Kagome reached out a slender hand and turned the knob, the door swinging open to reveal a different brother, his eyes surprised as her own with his hand in the air to knock.
“Supper is ready, come along” he said gruffly, his eyes darting down the hall towards another door.
“I assumed, which is why we were on our way” she snapped, her patience growing thin as her nerves rattled again. The proverbial hairs stood up on the back of her neck as she recognized the feral gleam in his eyes, the hunger that plagued him from his soul.
“There will be no we miss, only you” came the gruff reply, his hand resting on his sword as he glared over her shoulder at the taller Daiyoukai.
“We go together” she ground out, reaching back and taking the hand of Sesshomaru. If Sesshomaru was surprised, he didn’t show it, instead grasping her hand deeply within his own. His hackles were on edge, and the tone of the man left much to be desired. His beast screamed to protect the bitch, protect the mate, and for once he found himself in agreement with the sentiment, if not the term.
“Oh no sweetie, you’ll go by yourself, and he can go. We only want you, and seein’ as there are four of us, and only two of you, that won’t be a problem.” His teeth were yellow when he smiled, his hand gripping the sword at his side. With a start Kagome realized he held Sesshomaru’s sword, the scabbard held at an awkward angle by a man who did not know how to wield it. The door to their left opened, and out filed the three other brothers, one with her bow, and two with what looked to be makeshift spears. They were at an impasse, Kagome could not fight them off, but backing up meant letting them into the little sanctuary she had come to appreciate. The decision was taken from her when Sesshomaru pushed in front of her, his fangs elongating and the human appearance dropped, his eyes bleeding red at the man who had dared wield his sword, his father’s fang.
“Move human, or your life is forfeit” he growled out, the stripes on his face growing jagged with each word. The man screamed in terror, his fumbling hands trying to pull the sword from its sheath in a full blown panic. “How dare you, filth, how dare you try to use my sword against me” the words were a growl, and before Kagome could react, his hand was around the mans neck, lifting him up into the air “HOW DARE YOU USE MY FATHERS FANG YOU FILTHY PIECE OF SCUM.” Sesshomaru’s words exited his mouth at a roar, easily lifting the man off the ground while his brothers yelled in the background. A single snap was heard, and a lifeless thud as the body hit the floor. Wordlessly the three other brothers rushed Sesshomaru, jabbing at him uselessly with spears, spears that soon were broken at the haft, spears that did nothing to save their lives. Kagome quickly snatched one of the spear heads, watching in horror as Sesshomaru disemboweled the second brother, his nostrils widening at the stench of blood as if it were the most pleasant smell he had ever had the pleasure of gracing his nose with.
His body turned towards the second brother with the spear, his eyes narrowed in contempt as he slowly stalked toward what could only be his prey, blood red eyes glowing in the fading light of the sun. Kagome however was distracted by the man with her bow, HER bow, being drawn at the daiyoukai’s back, and the flame inside her roared with the inferno of her rage. With a wordless scream, she charged the man, spearhead in hand, her body and mind uncaring of the arrow that was starting to level at her chest. With a sickening squelch, she felt the spearhead sink into the man’s throat, his gurgled gasps overpowering her blind rage as her bow clattered to the floor. Panting for air, she turned to see Sesshomaru now staring at her, his red eyes gazing hungrily at her now blood spattered form, his tongue licking his lips in an almost obscene gesture. Kagome only had a moment to wonder what would happen to her before she was pinned against a wall, the hard body of Sesshomaru looming over her as he slowly licked the blood from her face.
“You are mine, bitch, and tonight, I take you as mine” he growled out, slowly laving his tongue over her neck and face, cleaning her of the filthy man’s blood.
“Se...Sesshomaru...you know you don’t want that” she gasped, shuddering at the thought of what he actually meant.
“On the contrary miko, I do, your body calls to me, hungers for me, and I will give it what it wants.” Kagome gulped a bit at the last statement, her brain furiously working out how to get out of this alive, though another part, a darker, hungrier part whispered ‘Why?’.

I know it’s a cliffy, but I am already working on the next chapter and I promise, some very lemony goodness coming up!
