Chapter 9 At last
Kagome and Inuyasha finally headed to bed not long after midnight, Kagome had been absolutely exhausted. They got ready for bed Kagome smile down at the ring on her hand once more before snuggling into Inuyasha’s side. Inuyasha knew his fiancé was tired and started to rub her back in gentle circles. Kagome just about purred and snuggled herself as close as she could. “Tonight was perfect.” She murmured. Inuyasha smiled and ran his fingers through her hair. He could not believe that Kagome was going to be his mate and wife someday. One probably would be sooner than the other but that was fine with him. They needed the timing to be right for starters, they were both public figures and with that they would need to be careful. If they planned a human wedding too soon, it would be saw as a rebound or shot gun wedding. They would need to be seen dating for a few months before the engagement could be made public. The human world and demon world were still so different. In the demon world if he and Kagome had gone through with mating the night she left Koga it wouldn’t have been given a second thought. When a demon finds their mate they tended to mark their mate so the bond would allow them closeness no amount of dating and talking could. It was their way.
“Goodnight Inuyasha.”
“Goodnight my love.” Inuyasha whispered as he placed a soft kissed on top of her head.
Sesshomaru carried his little mate to their room as she giggled about something she had said. He smiled down as she cupped his cheek and pressed a kiss to it before trailing kisses down his neck and mark. She paid extra attention to his mark, eliciting a small growl from the demon as pleasure shot to his groin. He doubled the pace to their room, slamming the door behind them. She squealed as he tossed her on the bed before crawling over her petite frame. “My mate wants to play with fire does she?” He growled playfully before capturing her lips in a searing kiss.
She moaned arching her back to him, returning his kiss with the same passion. She trailed her hand over his shoulders, down the front of his shirt, unbuttoning it as she went. With his chest fully exposed to her she ran her hands over it. Taking in the feeling of his well define pecks and abs, moving her hands lower to unbuckle his belt and pushed her hand into his pants gripping his stiff rod. The last emotion surprised him, until he took a deep breath and notice for the first time his mate was fertile. “Do you think the baby will have ears like Inuyasha or elf like ears like their papa?” Rin wondered aloud, smiling as she traced small circles on his arm that was wrapped securely around her waist. Sesshomaru barked out a short laugh and shook his head burying his in her hair.
“I have no idea, I would suspect they will have ears like Inuyasha but it’s possible they will be more demon then half so we’ll have to wait and see.” He answered her honestly as he had no idea. His father was a powerful demon, a dai youkai like himself but Sesshomaru was more powerful than his father. There was a chance that their child would be almost full demon. He could speculate but they would not know till later in the pregnancy. Sesshomaru would know by her scent in a couple days if it was true.
“I hope they have Inu ears so cute and fuzzy.” She let out a cat like yawn. “I expect you to carry me tomorrow if I can’t walk.” She mumbled before drifting off to sleep. Sesshomaru smirked and covered them with a blanket he suspected she might be sore in the morning and would gladly carry his mate around. He hope the Kami would bless them this month he didn’t want to disappoint his mate any longer. He didn’t want to be disappointed either of them which was why he made sure to be home more. Sighing in contentment he slowly drifted off to sleep, pulling his mate as close to him as he could.
Koga exited his apartment building immediately he could feel something was off. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end, he was tempted to turn around and head back to his apartment but knew that wasn’t a wise idea. He was supposed to be watching Sota so he could ‘kidnap’ the kid. He knew that as the days passed Zenaku would become more impatient. Koga told him he needed more time as Sota was never left alone, but with Yura’s apparent disappearance Zenaku was becoming suspicious. Koga hadn’t even known that Yura was working for the evil bastard. Koga rounded the corner to head to the Higurashi shrine. The demon that was tailing him was back a far distance and slowly closing in on him. “Fuck.” Koga swore under his breath and picked up his pace slightly. The street he was currently on was deserted at this time of night his footsteps seemed to echo in the quiet night. He needed to get to a street that was more crowded, he knew they couldn’t risk confronting him in public place. That would draw unwanted attention, just as he was about to round another corner a demon stepped from the shadow’s. He knew the demon as Hiten was the one that had brought Koga the chunk of Ayame’s hair after she had been taken.
“What the fuck you want?” Koga growled, turning his back towards the wall behind him as the demon that had been following him closed in. Two against one was not very good odds in his opinion but he would fight to his dying breath.
“The boss isn’t happy with your progress and wanted me to come remind you of what’s at stake.” Hiten smirked as he handed his phone over to Koga. His face paled as a video of Zenaku beating his Ayame playout on the screen. Koga threw the phone back at Hiten. He growled and eyed the other demon as he tried to get behind him.
“You think you can do better against Taisho’s? Now that they are involved it has complicated this whole situation.” Koga bellowed. The rage that simmered in is veins threatened to be unleashed. Watching someone hurt your mate was beyond torture.
“And whose fault is that?” Koga almost spun around to face the new comer.
“Koga, meet my brother Manten.” Hiten smirked as Koga grimaced at the ugly looking demon. “We know that the Taisho’s have complicated things but that shouldn’t deter you from your mission. The boss is thinking about making Ayame one of his play things and if that happens what you saw on the tape is just the beginning of her pain. Then when he’s done with her, me and Manten will get our turn with her before he kills her and send her back to you in pieces.” Hiten chuckled darkly.
“You fucking bastard.” Koga swung, his fist connected with the demon’s jaw with a satisfying crunch. Hiten hissed and stumbled backwards surprised that the wolf came after him and even managed to break his jaw. Manten charged Koga pulling him off his brother and slamming him against a wall. Koga grunted but didn’t back down, these demons threatened his mate directly and that couldn’t go unpunished. Manten threw a punch of his own that was easily dodged by Koga, who round housed kicked the ugly ass demon in return. Manten flew back with a thud and groan falling into the street. Before he could turn on Hiten again Koga was blindsided with a sucker punch to the side of the head. He was able to block a kick that was headed towards his stomach and landed another hit to Hiten’s face. His vision blurred as a second punch landed at the back of his head. He dropped to his knee as he Hiten recovered and punched him in the gut. He took another kick to his back and fell forward.
“You think that you can beat us?” Hiten snarled and kicked him in the ribs. One cracked under the forced. Manten kicked the wolf in the head and was satisfied by the crack as his foot connected. Koga curled in on himself and the kicks kept coming over and over. He tried to protect his head as the abuse continued. “This is just a warning.” Hiten spat and started to walk away.
“Figure it out soon wolf or you and your woman will be dead.” Manten growled as he stepped over Koga’s body
Ayame was the last thing he mumbled before he fell unconscious.
Kagome was jolted awake as the sun crested the horizon. She watched in amazement as her hanyou once again returned to her. His change always amazed her, even as children she had always stayed with him during his human night. It was a tradition they started and continued until last year, only those closest knew of Inuyasha’s human night. When they were young they would stay up late watching movies, eating junk food and playing games. As they got older it just turned into a hangout night. They made sure that they planned two similar nights a month so no one ever suspected the reason for the overnight stay. Kikyo hadn’t even known when his human night was, she had asked once but he never told her. She had stormed off saying something about how he should trust her, but in his gut he knew he couldn’t tell her. That should have been a sign from the start that something had been off with her. Inuyasha gave Kagome a toothy grin as he picked up her hand. She was marked as his intended in both human and youkai tradition. The thought made his heart swell as he pulled her into a hug, and gave her mark a light kiss.
“How long did you have it?” She asked her voice barely above a whisper as she pulled away from him. He looked at her confused until she held up her hand. There was no way he could have had a ring this beautiful made so quickly.
“A couple years.” He answered vaguely, a blush tinted his cheeks.
“Inuyasha.” If he was being vague that meant there was more to the story and she wanted to know. Inuyasha’s cheeks flared red under her gaze. He sighed and pulled them down to the bed, her head rested on his chest. He was embarrassed by the answer, but if she really wanted to know then he would tell her.
“Remember the summer before you started dating Koga when Kikyo broke up with me the first time.” Inuyasha started and she nodded. That had been the best summer of her teenage years in her mind. They had spent the whole summer at the cottage but something had changed between them. The spent the summer acting more like a couple then friends and Kagome had honestly thought that Inuyasha was going to ask her to be his girlfriend but before they went back home they had a fight and Inuyasha shut her out again. “Do remember the night we went to lake to camp over night?” Inuyasha asked.
“Of course.” Kagome answered thinking back to that night.
They had hiked to the lake and set up a small camp, no tents just sleeping bags as the night was supposed to be rain free. There was a small one room cabin at the edge of the lake that could be used if it did rain, but the point was to be outdoors. It had been a great day of hiking and now they were enjoy some drinks by the fire. Miroku had swiped a bottle of vodka from the pantry before they left. Toga and Izzy didn’t seem to mind that they not so secretly got into the liquor cabinet. They figure that since they were here and not out downtown in the city clubs drinking that they were ok with it. Kagome giggle at Sango, Miroku and Shippo antics. They had indulged a little bit more in the liquor than her and Inuyasha. She suspected they would pass out soon. Shippo was doing tricks with his fox fire, while Miroku tried to feel Sango up for the third time that night. That had ended in another slap from Sango and Miroku giving her a goofy grin. Kagome noticed that Sango was not slapping Miroku nearly as hard as she used to so that must have meant that she was starting to have feelings for the monk.
“Kagome want to go for a walk?” Inuyasha smiled as he held out his hand to her. She wordlessly pulled herself up linking her hand with his following him into the woods. It was only a few minute walk to the lake side from their campsite but Kagome enjoyed the alone time with Inuyasha. They got to the lakes shore and sat by the edge of the water. The night was lit brightly by the full moon over head, there was a soft breeze but the lake barely rippled. Kagome took off her sandals and sank her toes into the sand of the manmade beach. They had sat on a log chatting, joking, throwing rocks into the water for a while. “Ha, as if you would go skinny dipping.” Inuyasha teased still slightly buzzed.
“Is that a challenge?” Kagome’s toned turned serious as she looked him straight in the eyes. He chuckled saying she didn’t have the nerve, not one to back down from one of Inuyasha’s challenges she stood taking a few steps ahead. Alcohol fuel bravery pushed her on ward and she started removing her clothing. She pulled her sweater and tank top above her head tossing them back on the log before removing her shorts. Her heart was pounding frantically as she unlatched her bra, she was about to take off her panties but decided she had removed enough to get her point across as she walked to the water. Inuyasha stared on in shock as she stripped down to nothing but her underwear and head for the water. She turned slightly and gave her a wink before taking off into the water.
Catching a glimpse of her breast as she turned Inuyasha broke out of the trance he had been in and immediately started stripping down before taking off into the water to join her. She waded out into the water till it covered her exposed breasts and turned to see a now naked Inuyasha entering the water. He walked out to her, giving her the smile he reserved just for her and she nearly swooned. She smiled and looped her arms around his neck capturing his lips in a searing kiss. Both pulled away with a blush on their cheeks, it wasn’t their first kiss but it was the most intense. “See told you I could do it.” She splashed Inuyasha with some water before swimming away.
“Doesn’t count, you still have your underwear on.” Inuyasha countered with a smirk and a wink before diving under the water. Kagome mutter but continued to swim. A little while later they were back on the shore getting dressed to head back to the campsite. “Kagome, promise me you will never leave me.” Inuyasha suddenly said pulling her into a tight hug, afraid to hear her answer. Kagome was taken back but not surprised by him. He had been so hurt by Kikyo’s leaving and soon they would be going back to the city. Who knows what their relationship would be like once they got back to reality.
“I will never leave you Inuyasha, no matter what.” She answered before pulling back giving his lips another peck and hugging him tightly. They walked back to the campsite with silly grins on their faces. Miroku cracked an eye open as his friends came back he grinned as he could see the calmness in both their auras. He hoped this would mean they would finally be together.
“When we got back to the city I bought a promise ring and was going to ask you to be my girlfriend but then Kikyo came back and we had that fight. You said the summer had been a mistake anyway and you just wanted to stay friends. I kept the ring till last year, I had it melted and it’s now a part of the ring currently on your finger. So part of your ring I have had for years but the rest since last year. I jumped the gun having it made but I am so glad that I did.” Inuyasha finished, he had known in his heart that Kagome was meant and fated to be his mate. Her happiness had to come first and he had given up on her when she turned him down. He thought she was happier with just being his friend.
“Oh Inuyasha, I was such stupid teenager.” She laughed but turned serious for a moment. “I want you to know that if all this shit hadn’t happened over the last year I would have said yes back then.” She pulled herself up and on top of him capturing his lips. She poured her emotion into the kiss, knowing he could feel how sorry she was but happy they were together now. Inuyasha kissed her back before rolling them over on the bed. He was about to show her how much he appreciated her when he heard his brother heading towards their room. Groaning he pulled away from Kagome placing a soft kiss on her lips before telling her to go back to sleep. He would come wake her after he was done talking to his brother. His ear twitched in the direction of the door as his brother stopped outside. Kagome giggled watching Inuyasha lazily got out of bed to go get dress. She grabbed his pillow, snuggled against it before letting herself drift back to sleep.
“Good Morning bother.” Sesshomaru greeted Inuyasha as he stepped out of the room.
“Morning bastard.” Inuyasha grumbled. “What was so important that it couldn’t wait till later?”
“We have a confirmed location of where Ayame is being held, and also that Zenaku is currently there. A team will be leaving in the next couple of days to extract Ayame and arrest him.” Sesshomaru stated calmly waiting for his brother’s reaction before continuing. “I will be accompanying the team, will you be joining me?”
“You damn well know I am. I’m not going to let that bastard get away with what he did to Kagome.” Inuyasha cracked his knuckles before looking to his bother. “I want to be the one to execute him, the council needs to know that. He came after my mate and that entitles me to his life.” Sesshomaru nodded, he could understand his brother’s need for blood. One does not threaten another’s mate and not pay the price for it.
“Let’s go over the details before everyone awakens.” Sesshomaru said as they walked down to the office on the main floor.
“Alright.”
“I really don’t see the council having a problem with your request but Koga might want to challenged you right as his future mate has also been hurt.” Sesshomaru said as they sat across from each other going over the plan.
“He can challenge me all he wants but we can figure out a resolution. Maybe you could offer him full exoneration of his crimes for my right to the bastard?” Inuyasha looked at his brother who sat thinking for a moment. He was playing out different scenarios and that could be the best option for all.
“Hmm, I will approach them with this information it is acceptable terms for me.” Sesshomaru grinned, they had already planned on not charging Koga as he would testify against Zenaku but this would also allow the demon community to feel better about it. It was a win, win as no one would want to see a challenge between two demons who had both been wronged.
Later that day Inuyasha and Kagome ventured out to go for a swim at the river. Kagome was sore from all the shooting and training she had been doing over the past couple of days. The cool water would sooth her achy body along with her ankle that throbbed a little but was just about healed. Her heart felt like it healing more everyday she spent with Inuyasha. The memories of her time with Koga under the spell seemed more like a bad nightmare than actual reality. She had taken some time that morning to talk to a counselor her mother had contacted. The phone call lasted well over two hours and she now felt a little lighter than ever. She planned to meet with her in person once back in the city for some one on one sessions. Kagome felt that talking to someone who wasn’t her family or friends was important. They felt guilty enough for not doing more, and Kagome knew it wasn’t anybody’s fault for what had happened. She knew that she shouldn’t feel guilty for wanting to be with Inuyasha and wanting to be happy now. She had loved him for over a decade and now they could actually be a couple.
They arrived at their favorite swimming spot at the river, Inuyasha set out a blanket for them dropping there towels and picnic on it while Kagome stripped down to her suit. She wore a blue bikini that she borrowed from Rin which meant it was a little small. Inuyasha sure didn’t mind as he watched her slip into the water. The top of the suit showed more then what he knew Kagome would have been comfortable with around the others. Since it was just the two of them, she didn’t care. Inuyasha pulled his shirt off and jump into the water after his woman. He swam up behind Kagome and grabbed her around the middle pulling her close to him. Kagome let out a yelp of surprise before relaxing and turning herself around in his arms. She wrapped her legs around his waist and placed a light kiss on his lips. “I have some news.” Inuyasha whispered his tone serious but calm.
“What about?” She sighed she knew that tone and it wasn’t something good. She was truly exhausted and completely over everything that had happened. She just wanted to move on and start her life with Inuyasha without some bat shit crazy demon trying to kill her or those she loved. She just wanted to be Inuyasha’s mate and move forward with their lives. They had plans damn it and a psycho was delaying said plans.
“They found the safe house and confirmed that Ayame is being held captive there. We are just waiting for confirmation that Zenaku is there and then we move in.” He explained all the while tracing his fingers up and down her spine. “Just what do you mean by we?” Kagome’s eyes narrowed as Inuyasha gulped and tried to break eye contact. He had obviously been hoping she wouldn’t ask. Wrapping his arms firmly around her so she couldn’t escape he answered her question.
“Sesshomaru, myself and Miroku will be going with the soldiers Sesshomaru has picked to go. Before you get in a huff, just know they will be in the entry team and we will be there just to observe and Miroku just maybe needed for his holy powers.” Inuyasha explained watching the emotions that played across her face and felt them down the bond. He knew she would be mad and want to go with him but he couldn’t let her come if they weren’t mated. It left her vulnerable to the dark magic that had been placed on her previously. The risk was too great in his opinion and fortunately Miroku had agreed to come along with them.
“Shouldn’t I be the one to come with you? You know I am stronger then Miroku and I can shoot arrows a lot farther then him.” Kagome argued, which she knew she wasn’t wrong when Inuyasha didn’t immediately shut her down. In his mind of course she was the first choice for a spiritualist partner, but Miroku was trained in combat, she was not. Plus Miroku wasn’t the one being stalked.
“Kagome you are still vulnerable to the spell, right now I protecting you from an object containing the spell from hurting you. But we have no idea what kind of effect if he was to directly use dark magic on you. Until our souls are bound you are still at risk.” Inuyasha said trying to reason with his stubborn mate. The soul being bound meant that the original spell would be completely in effective and they would need a new one that would work on him and her. From what they had figured out in a short period of time the spell used the persons own aura against them but to do that they needed the individuals blood to do it. That meant that with his aura wrapped around hers in protection it couldn’t be manipulated. For a new version of the spell to be made it would take time and almost impossible to do with Inuyasha and her hidden away right now.
“Well let’s do it. Let become mates.” Kagome smirked at the shocked looked on Inuyasha’s face. Everything was happening so fast but she knew that she didn’t want to wait for Inuyasha any longer. She loved him with all her heart and soul and she wanted to be connected to him.
“Kagome I don’t want you to rush yourself just so you can come. You have been through so much and I don’t want to do something you will regret later.” Inuyasha tucked a strand of wet hair behind her ear. He didn’t want their first time to be rushed he wanted to give her all the romance and love she deserved. He hoped she would understand that. “I need you to be sure you are ready.”
“Inuyasha there are people out there that know each other for a few weeks and then mate. We have known each other our whole lives and I have loved you for years. You know we would have been mated within the week last year but everything got messed up. I can’t take not being able to feel you, I feel like I am still missing something. I am done being a victim, what happened was horrifying and awful but I won’t be traumatized by it anymore knowing what I know now. I will not let it stop me from living my life and being happy. You know would have done the same as Koga if the roles were reversed.” She wrapped her arms back around his neck and pulled him in close to her. “I would have found another way Kagome. I would have found you before now.” Inuyasha growled, just the thought of her being a captive made his blood seethe.
“Well Koga didn’t have the resources you do until now. He couldn’t risk mine or Ayame’s life and now he has us on his side. I understand why he had to do what he did and I know it’s not his fault or mine. But you not making me your mate because you’re afraid is absolutely absurd.” Kagome dipped her head down and nipped at his throat. Inuyasha groaned and mumbled he wasn’t afraid.
“Kagome stop.” He hissed and he pushed her back. “I’m not afraid wench, I am trying to protect your heart. You are still having nightmares at night for Christ sake.” Inuyasha was getting upset. He was just trying to protect her.
“Fuck that.” Kagome just about scream as she pulled away from him completely and swam a little closer to the shore so she could stand. Inuyasha followed but stayed a couple feet away giving her the space she needed. “That’s an excuse Inuyasha I could have nightmares about what happened for the rest of my life. That has no bearing on how I feel about you and wanting to be your mate. I feel incomplete my soul feels like it missing part of itself. You must remember how that felt before making me your intended. I need this, I want this and I want to be one with you Inuyasha. Becoming your mate was always just in my dreams and now that it here and real I can’t wait another minute. I love you.” Kagome’s tears streaked down her face as she spoke. Inuyasha was taken back by how not completely the bond had taken it toll on her. He knew she hadn’t been ready at the time he had placed the mark but who knew that having the mark on her would amplify the need to finish the bond. He could feel her soul calling out to him, pulling on him. Her need for him came crashing down the bond. He couldn’t feel any fear or hesitation, just pure love and need.
“Ok.” Was all he said as closed the distance between them cupping her face and capturing her lips. She stood shocked for a moment before melting into his arms returned his kiss wrapping her legs around his middle grinding her core against him. Inuyasha wrapped his arms around her and sprung from the water landing just beside their blanket and towels. Letting her legs fall to the ground she slowly pulled away kissing her way down his body. She pulled his swim trunks down and watched as his erection sprang free, she giggled as the thought of cold water definitely had no effect on her hanyou.
